Facts About GBI Circuit Construction
In constructing GBI Circuit
4 million cubic ton of Earth was moved
325000 tons of asphalt was used
130000 metric cube of concrete was used
450 km of fiber optic cables was used
Site Specifications
A main Grand Stand
10 temporary stands to seat more than 100000 cheering enthusiasts
3 story cantilever building with 41 garages
A race control room
A state art of media center to cater more than 600 media person
18 fully furnished team buildings
In October 2009 Earthwork was
started to build the track.
Earth to a layer of 25cm was compacted to a degree of 97% to
make an embankment which will not sink
In July 2010 Project Came to Halt
Due to Nature’s Furry
In Oct 2010 Project Geared Up Asphalt Specialist Dr.Rainer Hart joined the project to construct the
race track
To construct the race track an aggregate with high resistance
against polishing by tires of race cars was required
The aggregate was exported from nearly 300km far from the
construction site
Construction of Race trackThe graders were rolled out and the compactors were brought in to
begin work of first two layers of track.
The race track was built in five layers:
1st Layer: 25cm Granular Sub Base
2nd Layer:20 cm wet mix macadam
3rd Layer:9cm asphalt base coarse (to Withstand with heavy
forces)
4th Layer:5cm binder coarse (to endure the shearing forces from
fast running cars)
5th layer :4cm wear-in coarse(asphalt paved over a bind coarse to
complete the track)
A mixing plant was set near 5km away to produce the asphalt mix.
Mix production temp.-165-170 degree Celsius
Temp. after reaching paver-150 degree Celsius
Temp.at which the asphalt mix was compacted-135 degree Celsius
To achieve evenness along the surface of track a special pavers and workers was brought from
Germany to India.
Construction of Main Grand Stand
Foundation of man grand stand was completely
water logged. So the first task in constructing it was to pump
that water.
After Pumping water the structure of man grand stand was build
from concrete and steelThe main grand stand has :
A height of 30mts
Length of 138mts=4 x Length of a football field
56 trusses weighing 40 metric ton each
40 mts cantilever roof with 50000 square meters of insulated aluminum
sheeting
Sheeting of RoofAluminum sheets was chosen for roofing the man grand stand due tro
its durability flexibly and light weight.
50000 square meter aluminum sheets of .9cm thickness and 55m length
was used for roofing the main grand stand.
Integrated Race control
management system
150km Of fiber optical cables and 450km of data and electric cables were spread beneath the track connecting various hi tech equipment to control room.
This includes:
Real Time video surveillance of race track
Digital signaling system
Electronic time keeping system
50 race track cameras
33 marshal post
32 digiflags
SafetyCrash barriers of latest technology are employed in circuit to ensure
safety of the race car drivers as well as other people present in the
circuit.
TecPro barriers replacing the tire barriers are employed n the circuit
Nearly 2000 barriers along with 10km guard rail 15km FIA fencing and
16km U-drain has been provided in the track.
About TecPro BarriersThe TECPRO barriers is made from the rotational moulding of flexible polyethylene as follows. Dimensions
(cm) : 150 L x 120 h x 60 w. Weighs :120kg 3 nylon straps of 15 cm with resistance of up to 20T/cm2. The
barrier is filled with injected 'bendy' foam of flexible density. A metallic sheet is placed at the centre
which reinforces the barrier.
The main advantages of using TECPRO Barrier are:
Maximum amount of energy absorption.
Does not collapse upon impact.
Cannot be over-ridden by F1 car (test 218 km/h).
Reduction of impact 'G' force.
Ease of installation
Cost effective maintenance.
On September 1,2011 the Gautam Buddha international circuit got the clearance from FIA under the inspection of Charlie Whitting to
host international motorsports events and hosted Indian Grand Pix
F1 Racing tournament in October 2011.
