EVENTS 2018 Visit to the River & Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames, RG9 1BF 2pm, Thursday 24 May 2018 Designed by the modernist architect Sir David Chipperfield, the Museum is located on a site at Mill Meadows by the River Thames. It has three main themes, the non-tidal River Thames, the international sport of rowing and the locality and history of Henley-on-Thames. Of special interest are two excellent exhibitions, on the work of John Piper: A Very British Artist & Barbara Hepworth: Finding Form. The plan is to meet at the Museum at 2pm when we will be welcomed and the layout of the Museum explained. If you would like to have lunch in the Museum Café beforehand, please could you be kind enough to contact the café direct to book a table: [email protected] Parking is free, right by the museum; do keep going past the paid parking area. It sits in a 33-acre estate with historic woodlands, walled gardens and an ice house. Humphry Repton drew up proposals for the Park c.1792 in one of his famous Red Books, some transcriptions from which Tim Kirk, Moggerhanger’s Head Gardener, will show us. Visit to Cedar House Garden, Bacombe Lane, Wendover, HP22 6EQ 2.15pm, Thursday 2 August 2018

A visit to a chalk garden in the Chiltern Hills. A steep sloping lawn leads to a natural swimming pond with aquatic plants. There are wild flowers with native orchids and the shaped borders hold a great variety of trees, shrubs and perennials. A large greenhouse contains a good collection of half-hardy plants in pots.

Please meet at Cedar House at 2.15pm; parking space sufficient for 10 cars. The cost of the visit is: £10 and: £12 for guests, to include tea and cake. The Russell Arms, Butlers Cross, HP17 0TS, is suggested for lunch.

Please arrive at Wotton House at 12noon for the Annual General Meeting. The AGM is to be followed by a picnic lunch and tour of the landscape led by Michael Harrison, the Estate Manager.

The AGM itself is, of course, free of charge, but the rest of the day will cost: £5 for members and: £7 for guests, to include tea.

Visit to Woburn Abbey, Woburn, Bedfordshire, MK17 9WA 11.30am, Wednesday 12 September 2018

Continuing in the footsteps of Humphry Repton with a visit to Woburn Abbey and Gardens. Please meet 11.30am at the main entrance from the car park (near to the shop). We will then be at liberty to tour the Abbey and view the Repton exhibition, new this year.

Woburn Abbey has been the family seat of the Dukes of Bedford since 1574, and contains many fine paintings, including a version of the famous Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I. The exhibition entitled, ‘Humphry Repton: Art & Nature for the Duke of Bedford’ explores the relationship between Repton and the 6th Duke of Bedford. In c.1802 the Duke commissioned Repton to create designs to enhance the gardens and parkland; it will be possible to view these in Repton’s elaborate and comprehensive Red Book, on display here for the first time.

Light lunches are available in The Duchess’ Tea Room. At 2.30pm please reassemble for a ‘Repton Tour’ of the garden. The cost of the visit is: £20 with: £22 for guests.

Visit to Milton’s Cottage, 21 Deanway, Chalfont St Giles, HP8 4JH 2pm, Tuesday 2 October 2018 Milton’s Cottage is the only surviving residence of the poet and parliamentarian John Milton. Although he lived here for less than 2 years after fleeing London during the Great Plague of 1665, Milton’s Cottage was a place of importance in the writer’s life. It was here he completed his epic masterpiece, Paradise Lost, and was inspired to write its sequel, Paradise Regained.

The garden at Milton’s Cottage has been planted with species of flowers and plants that are referenced in Milton’s writings; and is the only cottage garden in the Chilterns listed by Historic England as Grade II on its Register of Parks and Gardens.

Please meet at 2pm in the free car park adjoining Milton’s Cottage. The cost of the visit is: £10 for members and: £12 for guests. The Fox & Hounds, Chalfont St Giles, HP8 4PS, is suggested for lunch.
