With more than 64,000 emergency room visits logged last year, Akron Children’s Hospital is one of the busiest facilities of its kind in the country. The 2,727 employees of Akron Children’s and its subsidiaries are responsible for its designation by Child magazine as one of the top hospitals in the country. In fact, Akron Children’s Hospital is one of three children’s hospitals nationwide to be selected by the March of Dimes to conduct research on families who need neonatal intensive care. And Akron Children’s is one of a handful nationwide to be verified three times in a row as a “Burn Trauma Center” by the American College of Surgeons.

More than 500,000 residents of Greater Akron use the hospitals of Summa Health System each year. As the city’s largest employer, with 6,036 employees, Summa has achieved the coveted ranking as “One of America’s Best Hospitals,” by U.S. News and World Report magazine six years in a row. Summa ranked in the top 50 in 11 medical specialties, 17th in the nation in “heart.” Its home grown insurance provider, Summa Care, consistently earns the highest rankings from national rating companies.

It is remarkable that of 6,000 hospitals nation wide, U.S. News rates only 168 as superior—and Akron has two of them. This year, U.S. News ranked Akron General Medical Center among the top 50 in five medical specialties. Cited as one of the “100 Most Wired Hospitals in the Country,” it is a national leader in its use of computer technology.Adding in the 4,959 employees at Akron General, our local health systems account for almost 14,000 jobs in the city. Among American cities, Akron is also fortunate in one other way: Each of our hospitals is still run by local boards of trustees.

Akron Thermal Saves Akron $20,000,000 per Year in Fuel CostsFifty three percent of Akron Thermal’s sales are to the University of Akron’s 24,304 student Main Campus and Akron’s three hospitals all located in the Central

Business District. These hospitals are among some of America’s Best Rated Hospitals as outlined below. Each of these institutions are investment grade and provide security to the district heating system whose steam rates are among the lowest in the nation. Our low steam rates provide an economic incentive for the Central Business District. It would cost $20,000,000 more per year to serve these steam customers in the suburbs because we would need to use natural gas as primary fuel instead of wood and coal. In effect, the City’s investment in the Resource Energy System is finally paying dividends to the City and Central Business District Community. The entire community benefits by reduced operating costs for the hospitals and the university.
