As we conclude the first semester of the 2018-19 school year, I extend a special thanks to our staff, students, parents, and community for making Buckeye Central an exemplary school community. Successful districts thrive based upon a common mission, goals, and teamwork. Here at Buckeye Central students are at the center of our daily endeavors. By working together, all of us have a direct impact on preparing them for success now and into their future. Recently, our District and the schools were identified as “Independent” based on Ohio’s accountability system. This is the highest ranking awarded to Ohio schools. Independent schools strive to continuously improve student outcomes by supporting the whole child, ensuring equitable services for all students, and creating a culture and climate that support learning. Our TEAM efforts to assure continuous improvement includes evidence-based strategies around: curriculum, instruction, and assessment; human capital management; school climate and student supports; and leadership, administration, and governance. We can proudly share that WeR_BC! Our holiday break runs from Friday, December 21 through Wednesday, January 2, 2019. Students return to school and begin their 3rd nine week session on Thursday January 3, 2019. Monday, January 21, 2019 is Martin Luther King Day with No School for students and staff. Our winter athletic season is in full swing and I encourage you to attend these activities as your calendar permits. Team schedules can be found on pages 10 and 11 and the District web page under the Athletics tab. The students always appreciate your support and attendance. In the spirit of the holiday season our students, staff members, and school organizations have been fully involved in community service activities that help others. The altruistic nature of our students is heartwarming as they work together to assist those in need. Examples of these activities are: FFA Hat & Glove Drive, Blessings Program, Salvation Army Canned Food Drive, and FFA making Christmas cards for local nursing homes. Also, in keeping with the Christmas season our music department presented their annual holiday concerts for the BC community. As usual, those in attendance left with the deepest spirit of XMAS in their hearts. MERRY CHRISTMAS

we wish you a

and a Happy New Year

This school year has been a busy one for the high school! Each year we celebrate our students and their accomplishments in a number of ways! The first is Fall Homecoming coupled with a week-long activity schedule. The Powder Puff football game was played under the lights again this year. The Student Council graciously donated hotdogs, chips and drinks to everyone in attendance. The Marching Band participated and provided entertainment during the game. The cheerleaders and band led the bonfire after the game. The cheerleaders and student body also collaborated for a successful whole school pep rally.

Our freshman participated in what we call “Empowerment Day.” It is a leadership and awareness day that the whole class participates in. There are multiple goals for such a day of which a few are: 1) individual and everyday leadership lessons, 2) class unity / anti-bullying and harassment, as well as 3) drug and alcohol awareness. It was a great day and the students learned and grew together as a class.

High school News and Updates

Our sophomores were also able to participate in a day of leadership training. The students traveled to Heartland Outdoor School. Here they worked as a team as students conquered the High Ropes course. They then set personal goals and conquered individual challenges as they participated in the Zip Line course. Lastly, they worked in small groups and learned collaboration, listening and leadership skills as they competed in the Construction Zone.

Our History department excels at providing our students with real civic opportunities. This year we were blessed to be able to participate in a Congressional Debate held in Monroeville. Our students came to the debate prepared with relevant and on-point questions that challenged both participants. They were able to see and interact in real world politics. It was eye opening as they were able to see first-hand a real protest as they stepped off the bus!

Each year we bring in a student speaker that we believe is engaging but has a powerful, positive, and relevant message. This year our speaker was David McCreary who is an amazing magician that has performed for years in Las Vegas. He also happens to be the host of Ohio’s Cash Explosion television show. His message was simple but powerful, “Learn more, laugh more, and love more.”

We Are BC! 3

Once again, Mr. Heydinger and our students worked very hard for two months to provide for our community the annual fall play. This year the Fall Play was, “The Trial of the Wicked Witch”, which was a great follow up the previous year’s Spring Musical, “The Wizard of Oz.” As expected to play was amazing and our students shined!

Also, each year Buckeye Central hosts the Veterans Day Assembly. This year Mr. Wiles and the Government class coupled with Student Council created the best assembly to date! Our elementary students entertained with a Readers Theater as well as a choir. The guest speaker this year was the Huron County Sheriff Todd Corbin. Todd is a distinguished veteran who personally carried six men safely off the field of battle and in the process earned the US Navy Cross!

The high school agriculture program worked with the elementary school to provide an Agriculture day for the elementary students. The high school students created a number of agriculture related activities for the students. It was a great learning experience for both the high school and elementary students.

One thing we are particularly proud of this year is our Thanksgiving meal. The entire district participated in a Thanksgiving meal. Our amazing cafeteria workers came early and worked hard to prepare a wonderful lunch centered around turkey. The entire staff at Buckeye Central all provided one desert as well. It truly was a humbling experience as we all have so much to thankful for.

Just recently, a number of coaches, Buckeye Central staff members, community members, and the Athletic Boosters met at BW3’s in Tiffin for a fundraiser. It was the first Battle of the Schools between Buckeye Central and Seneca East. Both schools were represented by the pep bands, athletes, coaches, and community members. The event centered around a wing eating competition comprised of both a coaching staff team and student athlete team from each school. Buckeye lost the wing eating competition 111 wings eaten by Seneca East to 106 by Buckeye Central. The competition was determined by a tiny margin but the profit for the night was not. A 50/50 raffle and 15% of all sales went to both schools!

Mrs. Amy Miller organized a guest speaker on Thursday, December 13th. Helga Long, a Buckeye Central graduate, has written a powerful memoir about her mother during WWII entitled “Helene: True Story of a German Girl’s Resilience Growing up during World War II.” She was a knowledgeable and passionate speaker who kept our students engaged.

Great things have occurred in the classroom as well. World History students, while studying World War II, designed a shanty that was similar to what soldiers lived in during the war. In Advanced Geometry and Calculus our students built an algorithm that would predict how many rubber bands it would take to force a pumpkin to explode. The number of unique learning experiences is too many to list here but can certain be evidenced by our outstanding school report card!

This time of year it is important to count your blessings. I can honestly say, that I am blessed to work with the best kids in Ohio, the best community in Ohio and the best staff in Ohio! On behalf of the High School staff we truly wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Wonderful New Year.

Go Bucks!

From the Middle School Principal’s DeskFrom laughing along with a motivational speaker to visiting places of interest to preparing presentations and performing holiday music, it has been a busy first semester for our Buckeye Central Middle School students. They have learned a lot and have given even more to each other in the way of assistance and good cheer.

We look forward to semester two and all that it brings!

Dave McCreary’s Simple MessageMotivational speaker and illusionist Dave McCreary visited Buckeye Central Schools. In between magical feats, students in grades 7-12 heard his positive message about making thoughtful choices.

Mr. McCreary walked us through the highs and lows of his life and challenged us to reflect on our own decisions. The students enjoyed his impressive magic tricks, self-deprecating humor, and simple but effective message to learn more, laugh more, and love more.

Fifth Grade Students Share Planet PresentationsMrs. Steiger’s 5th grade Science students researched, discussed, and collaborated on the artwork and the most important information to share about each of the planets.

They worked in groups to select reliable sources, decide on what should be included,

fulfill the requirements of the presentation, and set up who would present each part. All of the students spoke during the formal presentation and one of the fun facts that was shared was how old someone would be on another planet versus how old they are on planet earth.

JTI Students Host Red Ribbon Week ActivityMembers of the local Junior Teen Institute recently visited with BCMS 5th graders to discuss staying alcohol and drug free.

Using straws, the JTI members took students through simulations of working lungs and then weakened ones. They also had the 5th graders roleplay characters in “resisting peer pressure” skits and then discussed the good and bad decisions made during each of the vignettes.

In addition to fostering drug and alcohol awareness, these student partnerships help form bonds across buildings and plant the seed for growing future JTI members and caring citizens.

Sixth Grade Science Students Visit Mr. Pope’s ClassMrs. Caudill’s Science students recently visited Mr. Pope’s Vo Ag students where they ate “dirt” pudding while learning about bedrock bottoms, organic matter, subsoil, and topsoil. They also learned to recognize sand, silt, and clay, distinguish their properties, and observe their interaction with water.

They participated in additional interactive demonstrations where they discussed compact soil, tractors breaking up soil particles to help plants grow, and hilly soil causing erosion.

8th Graders Visit Seneca County CourthouseThe 8th grade students from BCMS recently toured the Seneca County Courthouse, learned firsthand how the judicial system works,

We Are BC! 5

sat in on a hearing in a working courtroom, and asked the judge and lawyers pertinent questions.

The trip coincided nicely with the class’s recent study of the U.S. Constitution including what happens when laws are broken and how to avoid ever having to appear in court in the first place.

The experience is also a test run for their upcoming trip to Washington, DC in May where they will tour the National Archives and see the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence in person.

BCMS Christmas ConcertThe 5th-8th grade students performed fifteen numbers at their recent concert. Seven of these were instrumental and eight were vocal. Each song helped put the audience in the holiday spirit.

Two students performed instrumental solos. Isaac Hiler performed a trombone solo during “A Christmas Canon” and part way through “Ding Dong! Merrily on High” Lexi Joseph played a solo on flute. The 7th and 8th grade choir’s rendition of “Jubilate, Servite” was especially crisp and moving.

Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Niese and the music boosters for all the planning, hard work, and personal touches that go into preparing each musical group for success!

Local Spelling BeeTeachers in grades 5-8 recently hosted the local spelling bee contest. Students studied words from provided lists and went head to head with their same-grade peers. Here are the winners in each of the grade levels: 5th grade--Angela Figueroa, Kyra Blackshear, and Olivia Bishop; 6th Grade--Isaac Parsons, Izaak Hickman, Matthew Heefner, and Trevor McGee; 7th Grade--Shelbie McClellan; 8th Grade--Zachary Flood and Faith Raines

We wish the BCMS ace spellers congratulations and best wishes at the next level, our district bee!

Middle School Teachers Decorate Their DoorsThe BCMS teachers have decorated their doors for the holidays and added to the festiveness of the season. The creations reflect either the subject taught or the teacher’s sense of humor or personality. With the addition of two stately trees and lights galore, the hallway is picture perfect for the holidays.

Thank you to everyone for their hard work in making the floor a warm and inviting place for students!

From the Principal’s Desk Elementary SchoolWe hope this newsletter finds you well and that the New Year is filled with happiness and success! The closing of the first semester is always a busy time of year for everyone it seems and that is, in fact, the case here at Buckeye Central Elementary. We have been participating in numerous events, field trips, and interesting projects that have benefited our students to broaden the scope of their education and provide outstanding opportunities to grow as future citizens. In the past several weeks, our students have been involved in agricultural education, children’s theater, and a dinosaur museum along with many other activities. Check out the following articles to see everything our students have been doing.

We look forward to a second semester filled with challenges and excitement for the students and staff alike as we continue together in our educational journey.

Yours in Education,Mr. Matt Millinger

Holiday Cuties! The Kindergarten classes took part in their holiday performance to a packed audience of friends and family. They sang several contemporary holiday songs and then asked for audience participation to do a classic holiday sing-along. They looked like Santa’s little helpers dressed in their holiday attire complete with hats and reindeer antlers. Everyone had a fantastic time!

Gingerbread Decorating! The Kindergarten classes invited family members to school to decorate gingerbread houses and enjoy some family fun time together. The classes read numerous variations of gingerbread stories building up to the activity. Through those stories, they explored characters, sequence, and rhyming. The family members greatly

enjoyed spending time with their young students and learning a little more about what our little ones are doing in the classrooms. Needless to say, a large amount of sugar was consumed during this endeavor but everyone had a wonderful time working together to create their sweet looking houses.

We Are BC! 7

Field TripThe First Grade traveled down memory lane to the historic Harvey One-Room School to learn about life in the past. Our students experienced first-hand, how the students from long ago learned the subjects of math, reading, and writing in a one-room schoolhouse. We also traveled by trolly to the original Harvey’s Homestead Barn to learn

more about the tools that were used for farming and how people cared for their animals during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

First Grade and Sixth Grade Collaborate for CommunityFirst graders were invited to collaborate with the 6th grade students to write a letter and make placemats for residents at the Willow’s Nursing Home. Students used old Christmas cards and wrapping paper to make a collage. A letter wishing them a wonderful holiday season was one of the highlights of the placemat.

Prehistoric animals and fossils! In November the 2nd graders embarked on a whole unit of prehistoric animals and fossils! During the unit, we learned how to extract fossils from the soil, what conditions were needed to have fossils form and then made our own fossil prints. We conducted research on an animal and created brochures on chromebooks & habitat boxes at home. Some students even created a Google Slide presentation. We were able to work across the curriculum as well. In math we figured out how long each animals was on Earth, & graphed height, weight, and length. In social studies we used world maps and located the places where fossils of our dinosaurs were found and constructed a timeline to show when our dinosaurs lived. The final (and best) moment though came when we had our families and other classes take tours when we opened our Prehistoric Animal Museums in each of the 2nd grade classrooms!

Spider MattersThe third grade students at Buckeye Central Elementary had a special visitor. Abby Ditomassi from the Crawford Park District presented a spider program to the students. Abby included cool videos of some amazing spider adaptations. The students were surprised at the wide variety of adaptations spiders have to catch their prey. Third graders were particularly impressed with the fishing spider and the diving bell spider! Then students had to create their own spider species and describe an environment where their spider could meet its needs. Abby also brought a special visitor - a tarantula! She described the adaptations of the tarantula and its behavior as each student got a chance to get to know the arachnid better by observing and touching it! We are looking forward to Abby’s next visit!

The Reluctant DragonThe Columbus Children’s Theater performed the Reluctant Dragon for the elementary students. The play was about a poetry loving dragon that just wanted to be friendly and conveyed the important message that there may be more to others than what they appear to be and we should not be too quick to judge someone. The students were highly engaged in the story and greatly enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions about the theater performance and acting in general. Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring this wonderful event!

Secret Santa ShopBefore winter break the PTO hosted their annual Secret Santa Shop for students in grades kindergarten through 4th. This program makes it possible for children to experience the joy of choosing their own special holiday gifts for family and friends. This event was set up during school hours and supervised by parent volunteers, who helped the children pick the perfect gifts for their loved ones. The students really enjoyed picking out their presents. Not only did the Secret Santa Shop help the children pick out their gifts, but it also taught them to budget their money and make their own decisions.

Learning About Livestock!Diane Sand from the Crawford County Soil and Water brought Livestock Live to the Buckeye Central Elementary students. The students were able to learn about different types of farm animals. Mrs. Sand brought a turkey, lamb, calf, chicken and piglets to the school. The students were allowed to hold or touch the animals.

Over Thanksgiving, Mrs. Sand taught our students about wild turkeys. The students were able to touch preserved turkey parts. They learned where we might see turkeys in this area and what types of things they like to eat. It was a very interesting presentation and the students loved it!

Agriculture Education DaySome of our BC high school students organized an agriculture education day by setting up stations and conducting activities to teach our children about the importance of agriculture in our community. Our elementary students were able to visit stations specifically designed to teach them about the types of products made from crops grown in our area. They also learned about the types of animals that are trapped and how the pelts are used. They even had the opportunity to pet some alpacas. Thank you to Mr. Pope and the high school students for this excellent and informative endeavor.

The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) recently announced that our schools and District received several awards recognizing student achievement. The Middle School earned the Momentum Award for the 3rd consecutive year with the District receiving the Momentum Award for the 2nd consecutive year. The Momentum Award is presented by the State Board of Education and recognizes schools for exceeding expectations in student growth for the year. Schools must earn straight A’s on all Value-Added measures on the report card. The school or district must have at least two Value-Added subgroups of students, which includes gifted, lowest 20% in achievement, and students with disabilities.

The Middle School was also designated as a 2017-2018 High Progress School of Honor! This recognition considers student performance on Ohio State Tests over a five-year period (2014 through 2018 school years)

being evaluated against statewide gains. As such, the middle school performance assured learning gains qualifying for this prestigious recognition. We were 1 of only 68 schools in the State of Ohio to earn the High Progress School of Honor. Additionally, BC Middle School earned the Overall-A-School Award for 2017-2018. Overall-A-Schools

must earn all ‘A’s on all applicable value-added measures on the Ohio School Report Card in 2018. The four possible measures are Overall (All Students), gifted students, students in the lowest 20 percent in achievement, and students with disabilities.

All of these accomplishments are a result of student-centered education, teamwork, and a dedication to being our BEST! A special thank you to the teachers, support staff, students, parents, and school community for making our schools super special. Together, we are making a difference!

We look forward to seeing you at a board meeting in this upcoming year. These monthly meetings are regularly held the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the school library. January’s meeting is rescheduled for Monday, January 7, 2019 due to an athletic event on January 10.

As you may have noted by the large sign in our front yard, the district continues to seek individuals who are interested in driving bus for our schools. If you or someone you know may be interested, please

contact Deb Briggs, Transportation Supervisor, at 419-492-2864 during the school day.
