Reading Ketteler’s publications, sermons, and correspondence, I argue that Ketteler cannot be simplified as either a liberal Catholic or an old- fashioned “ultramontane” Catholic. He argued that Catholics should be considered both modern scholars and loyal Germans, while they remained devoted Catholics. Catholic community through time with the revealed Word of God as well as with all Catholic scholars since Jesus’ time provided the best modern scientific method. German history proved that only when Catholicism was preeminent in the German lands did the German peoples lead Europe. Ketteler argued that Catholics could be truly Catholic at the same time that they fulfilled the ideals of modern Germany — serious, scholarly, enlightened, and progressive.
