Bachelor of Science inBiomedical Laboratory& Clinical Sciences
The Bachelor o Science in Biomedical Laboratory &
Clinical Sciences (BLCS) combines general undergraduate
education with special technical preparation or thebiomedical feld in order to train students or positions
in biomedical research laboratories or clinical research
settings. The time required to earn the degree varies based
on individual schedules, transerable credits, and the pace
students establish or themselves to complete the program.
The BLCS curriculum consists o 128 credits, to be earned
in our distinct components:
1.Distribution/Specialization Requirements (74 credits)
Distribution requirements comprise the basic science and
liberal arts courses or all Metropolitan College degreecandidates, while specialization requirements are drawn
rom specifed courses in the biomedical sciences taught
at Boston Universitys School o Medicine. Students must
complete 48 distribution credits and 26 specialization
credits. Courses taken at other institutions may satisy
some o these requirements.
2. Specialization Electives (36 credits)
Specialization electives provide working knowledge in a
range o relevant felds, including cell culture, molecular
biology, immunology, and clinical laboratory genetics.
Students select their electives rom a wide range o
oerings, and may concentrate on an area o their
choosing. Students must complete 36 credits o
specialization electives, o which 10 additional credits
o externship may be chosen.
3. Free Electives (8 credits)
Free electives allow students to complement and broaden
their academic background. Students should consider their
career objectives and personal interests when selecting ree
elective courses. Eight credits o ree electives are required;
approved transer credits rom another accredited
institution may be applied toward this requirement.
4. Externship/Clinical Practicum (10 credits)
Students gain hands-on experience in their chosen feld
by working as interns in a laboratory environment.Externships are available in clinical, industrial, and
university settings, and assist students in meeting
individual goals while earning credit toward their
degree and adding valuable proessional experience
to their rsum.
Students must earn a minimum o 10 credits through the
externship program, and may earn up to 20 credits with
the directors approval. The total number o credits earned
in the externship will determine the number o specialization
elective course credits required o students.
Students must earn a grade o C or higher in specialization
courses. To graduate, students need a cumulative grade point
average o 2.0 or higher.
Course Listings and DescriptionsA comprehensive list o courses, course descriptions,
and requirements or the Bachelor o Science in Biomedical
Laboratory & Clinical Sciences can be ound online at
bu.edu/met/biomedical.
Course schedules or specifc semesters can be oundon the website or in the Metropolitan College Schedule
prior to the start o registration. See page 5 o this brochure

The ExternshipThe externship is an integral component o the
Bachelor o Science in Biomedical Laboratory &Clinical Sciences degree requirements, providing a
valuable opportunity or students to gain hands-on
experience in their chosen feld. Externships can take
place in biotechnology frms, clinical laboratories,
and biomedical research acilities. Students have
also been able to arrange externships at their
own workplace. A contract signed by the student,
laboratory supervisor, and program director is
required. Students must meet with the program
director and submit a rsum at least one semester
beore their externship is to start. Beore receiving
a grade, each student must present a PowerPoint
summary o his or her directed study.
A minimum o 10 externship credits is necessary
or the Bachelor o Science in Biomedical Laboratory
& Clinical Sciences degree. A minimum o 15 hours
o supervised laboratory work equals one credit.
Students pay regular tuition charges or externship
credits. Students completing their externship should
enroll in Directed Study Biomedical Externship
(GMS BT 591/592) or Clinical Research Practicum
(GMS BT 594/595).

So ar, my avorite aspect o the
program is the hands-on training.
The lab classes provide a good
opportunity to practice and learn

become more amiliar with the
ab instruments and research in
he Lab Animal Science Centert BUMC, where I work.
Getting to know proper medical
erminology also makes it
easier to communicate with the
Centers primary investigators.
can do a lot with the BLCS
degree, but Im ocusing on
genetics and molecular biology
because I want to go into
bioinormatics. This program is
giving me the oundation I need
o pursue this goal.
The biomedical feld oers a broad range o caree
opportunities. Below are two examples o job
descriptions or which Biomedical Laboratory

Associate Scientist I
This position is critical in the testing o
manuactured drugs to be released by a company
Knowledge o CGMP, Standard Operating
Procedures (SOPs), validation activities, specifc
sotware, and laboratory assays is critical to
successul perormance in this job. Excellent
communication skills are also important in training
and working across dierent departments within
the company.
Clinical Research Coordinator
Responsibilities include assisting with clinical
research studies; recruiting and evaluating
patients or studies; scheduling patients or study
visits; obtaining inormed consent; collecting and
