INT. SHARED HOUSE. JADE’S BEDROOM - DAY (07:00)1(JADE)

JADE is already awake, staring at the ceiling as her tinnitus hums continuously. Her alarm beeps, which JADE hears as being muted, and a strobe light flashes on her bedside table. JADE removes the vibrating pad from under her pillow and turns the alarm off with a sigh.

JADE has had a shower and is towel-drying her hair. She stops and looks at her face in the mirror.

INT. SHARED HOUSE. JADE’S BEDROOM - DAY (07:35)2A(JADE)

JADE finishes drying her hair with a hairdryer. She takes her hearing aids out of the case, before putting them in. As she turns them on we hear what JADE hears: ‘right ready’ and ‘left ready’. She notices the card her mother wrote for her (from Episode 11) tucked behind the mirror. She picks it up, looks at it and contemplates the day ahead.

INT/EXT. JADE’S CAR / ED. CAR PARK / MAIN ENTRANCE - 3DAY (07:55)(MARTY, JADE, MIKE)(NS PORTER, NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS, NS PASSERSBY)

JADE, wearing civilian clothing, looks like she’s in her own world as she drives into the ED car park with MARTY on his phone in the passenger seat.

MARTYIf you drove slower, I’d get a bit more social media time.

JADESorry, I forgot I was chauffeuring Holby’s leading influencer.

MARTY smiles. JADE parks.

MARTYYou okay?

JADEI’m on autopilot. Hardly slept.

They exchange a look. They both know what’s on her mind.

MARTYYou know, your mother’s probably as nervous as you are.

JADE wonders whether that’s possible. As she turns to reply to MARTY, through his window she sees cyclist MIKE RODRIGUEZ, 25, suddenly falling sideways from his bike, hitting his head.

JADEMarty!

JADE opens the door and runs towards MIKE, her footsteps creating an artificial sounding acoustic. NS PASSERSBY stand by, shocked, tentatively approaching him. JADE goes past them and attends to him. MIKE is still at first, but then lifts himself up slightly before vomiting on the pavement.

JADE (CONT'D)(to MARTY)

Get help, quick.

MARTY runs into the ED.

JADE (CONT'D)Please stay still. What’s your name?

MIKE wipes his mouth.

MIKEMike. Thanks but - my - work -





JADEYou might have a head injury -

MIKEJus’ bump, that’s all -

MIKE wipes his face and tries to get up, instantly in pain as he puts weight on his leg, before sitting back down.

JADEWe’re going to take you in and check you over, okay?

JADE touches his ankle and MIKE gasps with pain.

MIKEMy bike...

JADE looks at it. The front wheel is mangled.

JADEIt won’t be going anywhere fast, I’m afraid.

MIKE tries to get up again. This time JADE keeps him where he is with a hand on his shoulders.

JADE (CONT'D)(firmly)

Please stay where you are.

MARTY appears with an NS PORTER pushing a trolley. JADE looks at MIKE with concern. So much for a quiet morning.

INT. ED. RECEPTION / RESUS CORRIDOR - DAY (08:10)4(JADE)(MIKE, ETHAN, MARTY, NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE and MARTY push MIKE on a trolley toward Resus. We hear the confusion of sound through JADE’s P.O.V. The environmental noises are sharp, harsh. The background chatter is distorted. ETHAN appears.

JADEHe went head over heels just outside. Query concussion, he’s got a head injury and he’s vomited. He tried to get straight back on his bike. Possible left leg injury, he couldn’t put weight on it.

They continue towards Resus.

INT. ED. RESUS - DAY (CONTINUOUS)5(ETHAN, MIKE, JADE, MARTY)(NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE, MARTY and ETHAN push MIKE on a trolley through the doors of Resus. We hear the slam of the Resus doors echo in JADE’s hyperacusis, as though an ominous drum. JADE ignores it and attends to MIKE, applying gauze to his head wound as MARTY gets MIKE on monitors. MIKE breathes in a panicky way and JADE stays by him. ETHAN uses a stethoscope to listen to MIKE’s chest.

ETHANHi Mike, I’m Dr Hardy. I understand you had quite a fall outside. You chose the best place for it. I’m just going to run some basic tests, okay?

ETHAN feels for MIKE’s radial pulse, then feels MIKE’s abdomen.

MIKEI haven’t got time for this - got to -

JADETake it easy, there’s no rush.

MIKEGot the money -

MARTYWhat money?

MIKEMoney - dad.

ETHAN, MARTY and JADE wonder what he’s referring to, and how badly confused he is. MIKE makes a moaning sound.

MIKE (CONT'D)My - leg.

ETHAN Can we get some IV access and give him some morphine?

MARTY goes about getting IV access and morphine in place.

MARTY(to JADE)

Just when you needed a quiet morning.

JADE gives him a look as if to say ‘tell me about it.’

MARTY (CONT'D)At least you’re only doing a half day. Part timer.

JADE grins.





ETHAN All obs are okay. Jade, Marty, this might be a good moment for you to get into your scrubs?

JADE nods, overhearing ETHAN as she and MARTY walk out:

ETHAN (CONT'D)Mike, we’re going to do a neurological assessment to check for any significant head injury, before we check on your leg. Is that alright with you?

MIKE nods.

ETHAN (CONT'D)Could you tell me today’s date?

INT. ED. STAFF ROOM / ADMIN/CUBICLES - DAY (08:30)6(CHARLIE, JACOB, JADE, JAN, ROBYN, FAITH, DYLAN, NOEL, WILL)(NS SECURITY GUARDS, NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE comes out of the Staff Room dressed in her scrubs and sees CHARLIE approaching, a letter falling out of his pocket as he walks towards the Staff Room. JADE picks up the letter and walks towards CHARLIE just as CHARLIE gets JACOB’s attention.

CHARLIEJacob -

JACOB stops, a little wary.

CHARLIE (CONT'D)Thank you. For stepping up while I was gone.

JACOB(relaxes)

No problem.

CHARLIEAnd, when I said -

JACOBHey, forget about it. And take as long as you need, yeah?

CHARLIEThank you.

JACOB gives CHARLIE a conciliatory pat on the arm, and CHARLIE now regards JADE, who looks down at the letter and notices it has the letterhead: ‘NHS Organ Donation’.

JADEYou dropped this?

JADE hands it to CHARLIE, and he awkwardly puts it in his pocket.

CHARLIEThanks Jade.

JAN is crossing and approaches him warmly:

JANLovely to see you Charlie. Ffion sends her love too.

JAN smiles warmly as she walks past them and out. ROBYN joins them.

ROBYNI can’t believe how brave you were last week Charlie, with a gun pointing at you.

CHARLIE looks uncomfortable.





CHARLIEWell, psych training goes a long way.

DYLAN comes in, arm in a sling. FAITH looks surprised to see him.

FAITHDylan, how are you?

DYLANSpot on. Yeah.

DYLAN turns away from FAITH, who looks slightly put out. DYLAN looks up, and seeing most of the staff there, decides to address them:

DYLAN (CONT'D)Morning everyone. For obvious reasons, (looks at sling) I’ll be focusing on administrative duties today. Charlie’s back as well, on regular nursing shifts.

NOEL arrives.

NOELSorry, we’ve got a very unwell looking heart transplant patient, he’s short of breath and the triage nurse is tied up with a sick child.

DYLANWill, Charlie - can you deal with this?

WILLSure.

CHARLIE(with urgency)

Jade, with me.

JADE notices how CHARLIE immediately looks concerned. We follow WILL, JADE, CHARLIE and NOEL out of the Staff Room.

INT. ED. RECEPTION / RESUS CORRIDOR - DAY 8(CONTINUOUS)(NOEL, WILL, HAFIZ, JADE, CHARLIE)(NS NURSE, NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE walks with WILL, CHARLIE and NOEL past NS PATIENTS and NS STAFF towards the Waiting Area. She ‘tunes in’ to NOEL’s voice.

NOEL...told me he was power walking, got out of breath, and a cab driver stopped and brought him in. Name’s Hafiz Idrisi.

WILLWhich one is he?

But NOEL can’t see him where he left him. He looks around, scans the room.

NOELThere.

NOEL indicates towards HAFIZ IDRISI (30, quirky, insecure) slowly walking towards the door, sweating, flushed, breathless and faint. They walk over to him.

WILLHafiz. I’m -

HAFIZBusted.

HAFIZ turns round unsteadily.

HAFIZ (CONT'D)I appreciate you taking the trouble, yeah, but - I’ve caught my breath now and I’ve got somewhere to be -

JADEHafiz, could we sit down for a minute and have a chat?

HAFIZYou’d just be wasting your time -

CHARLIENot at all.

HAFIZ suddenly becomes faint and collapses, with JADE catching him. CHARLIE assists and WILL looks round for help.

WILLWe need a wheelchair.

An NS NURSE brings a chair. HAFIZ looks really drowsy.





CHARLIELet’s get you sat down, Mr Idrisi.

HAFIZ winces. He allows JADE and CHARLIE, assisted by WILL, to get him on a wheelchair.

HAFIZWhat about all these kind people? They were here before me.

WILLThey’ll be seen in good time, don’t you worry.

WILL and JADE walk beside as CHARLIE pushes a faint-looking HAFIZ toward Resus. HAFIZ looks back at CHARLIE.

HAFIZ(to CHARLIE)

I... I think I recognise your face from somewhere?

JADEYou’ve been plastered all over the local papers, haven’t you Charlie?

CHARLIE looks a bit uncomfortable.

HAFIZThat gun thing was you? What a dude.

HAFIZ wearily puts his hand up for CHARLIE to offer him a matey handshake, which CHARLIE complies with.

CHARLIESo you’ve had a heart transplant?

HAFIZ(pats his chest gently)

Yep. I got a brand new, second hand heart thanks to one careful lady owner.

CHARLIE(intrigued)

How long ago was that?

HAFIZFour months ago. There was a snowstorm? I woke up from the op and everything was white. I wasn’t sure I’d made it at first.

CHARLIE looks taken aback. That was when Duffy died, it couldn’t be her heart, could it? JADE spots CHARLIE’S expression and he covers. HAFIZ laughs gently then suddenly sits up and tries to get up from his wheelchair. JADE holds HAFIZ back gently.





JADEIt’s really important that we make sure your heart’s okay.

HAFIZFine, knock yourself out. Check my heart’s in the right place.

As JADE, WILL and CHARLIE go with a nervous HAFIZ toward Resus 2, they exchange a glance - we’ve got a bit of a character here.

INT. ED. RESUS 2 - DAY (09:30)9(WILL, HAFIZ, JADE, CHARLIE)(MIKE, ETHAN, MARTY, NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

HAFIZ is now hooked up to the monitor. WILL is going through a long list of questions. JADE pays close attention to what is being said.

WILLWhich immunosuppressant are you taking, Hafiz?

HAFIZ struggles to remember.

HAFIZTac. Tac...ro -

WILLTacrolimus?

HAFIZThat’s the one.

WILLWhen was your last blood test?

HAFIZ tries to think. He feels under pressure.

HAFIZLast month. A review at the transplant clinic. Why do you keep asking me so many questions?

As HAFIZ speaks, JADE focuses hard on his lips. We see this from her point of view, close up on his lip patterns. HAFIZ notices.

WILLEr, because we want to make sure -

HAFIZAnd why does she keep staring at my mouth?

This takes JADE aback. She touches her hair by her hearing aids.

JADEOh - I - I’m just - focusing on what you’re saying.

HAFIZ looks a bit puzzled. JADE smiles politely but looks unsettled, like she’d rather not address it. CHARLIE enters.

CHARLIEThe transplant team are in theatre but they’ll see you as soon as they can.

HAFIZ sighs.





JADEHis temperature’s up.

HAFIZI’m 100% sure it was the walking that did it.

WILLYour heart rate and your shortness of breath are cause for concern I’m afraid.

(to CHARLIE)Can I get a full set of bloods, including cultures? Actually, can you also get me 4.5 g IV piperacillin with tazobactam? Give it after the bloods and a urine sample have been taken. Plus an ECG.

JADEI’ll go and get the ECG machine.

We follow JADE as she leaves.

INT. ED. RESUS CORRIDOR - DAY (CONTINUOUS)10(JADE, NS MUM, NS CHILD, NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

AS JADE walks out of Resus 2, she pauses for a second and sees an NS MUM with NS CHILD, running near the vending machine, wearing a child’s toy stethoscope. NS MUM runs after NS CHILD and sweeps him up in her arms.

INT. ED. RESUS / RESUS CORRIDOR - DAY (CONTINUOUS)11(JADE, ETHAN, MARTY, MIKE, VOICEMAIL (O.O.V.))(NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE, feeling a bit uncertain, walks in to Resus to collect the ECG machine. ETHAN and MARTY are treating MIKE, who now seems mildly confused.

JADECan I take the ECG machine?

ETHANBe our guest.

JADEHow’s he getting on?

MARTYHe’s vomited and he’s had severe headaches.

JADEHow’s his GCS?

ETHANIt’s 14. The neuro exam was fine apart from some apparent confusion, so we’re getting a head CT.

JADE(worried)

Have we phoned next of kin?

ETHANThat’s a good idea.

JADE approaches MIKE.

JADEMike, would you like me to phone your next of kin?

MIKE(confused)

D- dad.

JADEOkay, I’ll get the number from your phone? Is he under ICE?

MIKEY-yeah.

JADE hesitates slightly, realising she has to make the call. She goes to the Resus phone then types in the number she finds on MIKE’s phone, under ‘ICE’ (In Case of Emergency).





VOICEMAIL (O.O.V.)You have reached the messaging service. Please leave your message after the tone.

The message is distorted and JADE can’t make it out at first, then realises it’s an answerphone message.

JADEHello? This is Nurse Lovall from Holby City Hospital Emergency Department. There is no cause for alarm but I’ve got Michael Rodriguez here. Could you please call us back as soon as possible? 0117 5600655.

ETHANThanks Jade.

JADE goes to get the ECG machine which is in the corner of the room and pulls it out. MARTY follows her into the corridor, and they walk slowly along.

MARTYYou okay?

JADENot sure I still want to know those answers.

MARTYIt’s different, but my dad, we’re working things out. It’s worth trying. Finding out what she’s like -

JADEWhat if I can’t even hear her properly? I mean, that’s why she let me go -

MARTYYou’re tougher than you think you are. You can handle it. Just like you handle everything.

JADEI’m not sure I can -

MARTYI can come with you?

JADESo you can hold my hand?

MARTYNo, it’s - support. Something friends give you... when they’re not being annoying.

JADEOkay.





MARTY12 o’clock, yeah?

JADE pauses, then accepts and MARTY walks off. As JADE turns back towards Resus 2, MIKE is wheeled past her towards CT. Pushing the ECG machine into Resus 2, JADE looks unsure about what’s ahead.

INT. ED. RESUS 2 - DAY (10:45)12(HAFIZ, WILL, JADE)(NS NURSE, NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE walks in pushing the ECG machine, and finds WILL holding papers, talking to a very fatigued-looking HAFIZ. WILL turns round to see JADE as they finish their conversation.

HAFIZThen we’d go to the ice bar, then a nightclub. Then we played urban golf in Shoreditch. That was a normal Friday night. Then we’d do it all again on Saturday.

WILL(ironic)

Sounds like a regular ED staff night out. I’ll leave you with Jade.

WILL smiles and walks out with the papers. JADE preps a needle and HAFIZ’s arm to draw blood, making conversation to relax him.

JADEI’m just going to take your bloods now, then we’ll do an ECG, is that alright?

HAFIZ nods. JADE locates a vein and starts to draw blood.

JADE (CONT'D)How’s it been, since the transplant?

JADE draws blood as HAFIZ talks, aware that she’s looking at his lips and a bit self conscious about it.

HAFIZDifferent. I used to be a trader, in the City. Long days. Longer nights. Suddenly it was game over.

JADEThen you got to go again.

HAFIZ(downcast)

Sort of. Got to know this place pretty well. I used to hang out on the fire escape over the garden bit, imagine I was somewhere else.

JADEWe all want that feeling sometimes.

HAFIZYeah. To be honest, it was harder when I got out.

JADEStarting again?





HAFIZ nods.

HAFIZYou can lipread me okay?

JADEYes. Just about.

HAFIZI should have realised. My uncle’s a bit deaf.

JADE smiles politely.

HAFIZ (CONT'D)Reckon I’ll be able to get off home soon? I’ve got some pills to catch up on.

JADEHave you been taking your tacrolimus regularly?

HAFIZI - I might have missed one here and there. I’ll check when I get back.

JADE(concerned)

I think we’ll need to keep you here a bit longer, okay?

(to NS NURSE)Can you give him 4.5g IV piperacillin with tazobactam?

JADE looks concerned. What’s HAFIZ been playing at?

INT. ED. ADMIN/CUBICLES - DAY (11:10)13(CHARLIE, JADE)(FAITH, DYLAN, ROBYN, NS PATIENT, NS STAFF, NS PORTER, NS PATIENTS)

A worried JADE finds CHARLIE on the phone and waits to speak to him.

CHARLIE(on phone, urgent)

We’re doing what we can but transplant patients require specialist help as you know.

JADE notices FAITH and DYLAN having an awkward interaction. FAITH expecting DYLAN to acknowledge her while DYLAN avoids making eye contact and resolutely continues typing on his keyboard. FAITH gives up and goes to check on an NS PATIENT being nursed by ROBYN.

CHARLIE (CONT'D)(on phone, urgent)

Okay, is there anything else you can suggest? Okay, okay, thank you, I suppose.

CHARLIE hangs up and sighs in frustration.

CHARLIE (CONT'D)The Transplant Team are still in theatre, they’ll free someone up to come down as soon as possible. Have you got Hafiz’s samples off?

JADEYes and he’s been given the piperacillin with tazobactam, but he’s just told me he’s not been taking his meds regularly.

CHARLIE(concerned)

Sorry?

JADESounds like it could be forgetfulness, but -

CHARLIEOkay.

CHARLIE walks back towards Resus. JADE follows him.

CUT TO:





INT. ED. RESUS 2 - DAY (11:15)14(HAFIZ, CHARLIE)(JADE, NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE follows CHARLIE, as he goes in. HAFIZ is topless, he has ECG tabs on his chest.

HAFIZThe man of the hour.

CHARLIEEr... how are you feeling Hafiz?

HAFIZNot too bad, considering.

HAFIZ’s casual tone jars with CHARLIE.

CHARLIEMy colleague mentioned you may have missed some of your immunosuppressants?

HAFIZYeah, I think so, I know it’s not good -

CHARLIE(intense)

Your heart could be rejected Hafiz. So you really, really need to tighten up on it.

HAFIZYeah I - things just got -

CHARLIE(abrupt)

Whatever else is happening. The tablets should be your number one priority. Do you understand?

HAFIZ(ashamed)

Yeah, yeah. I knew I was causing you bother - I should -

HAFIZ tries to take the ECG pads off his chest.

CHARLIE(condescending)

No, no. You need to stay here. So we can fix you. Again.

CHARLIE walks out and JADE follows him, leaving a downcast HAFIZ with NS STAFF.

INT. ED. RESUS CORRIDOR / RESUS - DAY (CONTINUOUS)15(ETHAN, MIKE, JADE, RASH)(CHARLIE, HAFIZ, ROBYN, NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

As JADE walks out to follow a fuming CHARLIE she sees a furious MIKE being wheeled back from CT into Resus, shouting at ETHAN. JADE follows them into Resus.

ETHANIt’s standard practice.

MIKE(angry, to JADE)

You - you had no right!

JADE gives ETHAN a look as if to say ‘what’s up?’

ETHANMike isn’t happy about the next of kin call.

(to MIKE)You were, and still are, very unwell.

JADEI checked with you, you said yes -

MIKENo I didn’t! Interfere w- people’s lives! I don’t want him here - I’ll make a complaint - confidential -

ETHANMike’s dad phoned back, and he’s on his way.

JADEI did ask.

ETHAN gives JADE a look, he knows she did too. MIKE recoils with head pains from his headache. JADE checks her watch for the time - which annoys MIKE.

JADE (CONT'D)We wouldn’t want you to be alone if your situation got worse -

ETHANAnd we still don’t know what’s wrong. By the looks of things, your CT has ruled out any trauma to your head, but we’ll wait for the formal report to confirm.

RASH comes in.

RASHWe’ve got the results of the venous blood gas test. It suggests a very low sodium level. We can get that doubled checked?





ETHAN looks puzzled.

ETHANWhen did you last eat Mike?

MIKE isn’t sure what to say.

RASHBreakfast?

MIKES- skipped it.

RASHYesterday?

MIKE blows air from his cheeks. ROBYN comes in.

MIKEWater.

RASHWhat about food?

MIKEA bit of toast.

ETHANAnd you’re a delivery cylist, riding around all day?

MIKE nods, though in pain from his headache.

ETHAN (CONT'D)I think we’re looking at hyponatraemia. That’d explain the drowsiness, the vomiting and the headaches. And the confusion over the next of kin call.

MIKEHypon-wh-?

RASHHyponatraemia is low sodium levels in the blood.

ETHANThanks Rash.

RASH leaves.

ETHAN (CONT'D)Jade, can you prepare some hypertonic saline?

JADE is unsure, looks down at her watch.

ETHAN (CONT'D)Unless you’ve got -





JADENo, that’s fine.





JADE gets on with it, but knows she’s cutting it fine.

EXT. ED. MAIN ENTRANCE - DAY (12:05)16(JADE, MARTY)(NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE walks out of the entrance alone, wearing her coat over her civilian clothes. She’s very much in her own world. She sees MARTY waiting for her, wearing his coat.

JADESorry Marty.

MARTYI wasn’t sure you were coming -

JADEI got a bit caught up with the cyclist.

JADE looks distracted.

MARTYSo... how are you feeling?

JADEI’m - I’m okay, I just feel a bit -

MARTYNervous?

JADE stops walking.

JADEYes. And I... think I need to do this on my own. Get my head clear. Sorry.

MARTY(understands)

Hey, what are you sorry for? It’s okay.

JADEJust a bit big. Proper life stuff.

He understands. He smiles supportively.

MARTYWhatever’s best for you. Come and find me when you get back, yeah? Good luck mate.

They both look emotional for a moment.

JADEThanks.

They hug. MARTY smiles at JADE and as she walks away, determined but also anxious about how this is going to go, we see how he watches after her, hopes she’s okay.

EXT. STREET - DAY (12:10)17(JADE, NS PASSERSBY)

JADE walks along the high street, her nervousness rising and the sounds around her distorting as vehicles go past. She hears snippets of distorted conversations as people pass by, the distortion rising. She crosses the road to the cafe.

EXT. CAFE - DAY (12:12)18(JADE, SUSIE)(NS PASSERSBY, NS BARISTA, NS CUSTOMERS)

JADE arrives outside the cafe. As she stands outside, looking both ways, she looks down at her hands and realises they are shaking. She puts them in her pockets. Several women in their 40s walk past, JADE’s hopes rising and falling as they pass by. Finally a woman with a prominent ‘deaf’ gaze arrives, SUSIE ASHBY (40s). She stands a few steps away from JADE. She is anxious and glances at JADE, then looks away. JADE looks at her. SUSIE turns and looks at JADE. In that moment, as they make eye contact, they each know who the other is.

JADESusie?

SUSIE lipreads and nods.

JADE (CONT'D)I’m Jade.

A beat. SUSIE nods as if to say ‘of course’. They look at one another, taking each other’s features in. Unsure what to say. SUSIE looks anxious to tell JADE something.

SUSIE(signing and deaf voice)

I’m deaf.

SUSIE looks at JADE, for her response. JADE processes two things at once - this is my mother? And she’s deaf? Then remembers her signs.

JADE(signing and speaking)

SUSIE looks shocked. JADE’s confused.

JADE (CONT'D)(signing and speaking)

You didn’t know?

SUSIE shakes her head. She didn’t know. JADE’s idea of why she was given up has suddenly altered, and she feels confused and angry.

SUSIE(signing)

You can - sign?

JADE’s almost reluctant to admit it:


A bit.

SUSIE looks at her features.





SUSIE(signing)

You look - the same.

JADE isn’t ready to compare family resemblances.

SUSIE (CONT'D)(signing)

Do you remember - me?

JADE shakes her head. Of course she doesn’t remember her, she was three. SUSIE looks sad at this. They’re each at a loss.

JADE(signing)

Coffee?

SUSIE nods and they walk inside.

JADE and SUSIE, both nervous, go to the counter. JADE hears the sound of people chatting, cups clinking on saucers. The overworked BARISTA turns around and greets them with a ‘Yeah?’.


I’ll have a tea please.

The BARISTA looks at SUSIE expectantly. She speaks, unclearly:

SUSIEBlack coffee.

SUSIE points at the board. The BARISTA looks behind him with raised eyebrows then turns to JADE for an answer. SUSIE looks mortified. JADE realises she has to interpret.

JADE(to BARISTA)

Americano?

The BARISTA writes down the order, and says something like ‘I’ll bring it over’.

INT. CAFE - DAY (12:15)20(JADE, SUSIE)(NS BARISTA, NS CUSTOMERS, NS PASSERSBY)

JADE and SUSIE walk across the cafe and sit by a window. SUSIE looks pensive, JADE’s trying to contain her underlying sense of anger and confusion about why she was given up. Both look nervous. A pause. The sound levels rise with the roar of the coffee machine as the BARISTA froths the milk. JADE struggles with the sounds and takes her hearing aids off. Suddenly all the chaotic sounds reduce. SUSIE looks at her questioningly.

JADE(speaking and signing)

Too loud.

SUSIE(signing)

Can you understand me?

JADE nods.

I didn’t -

SUSIE indicates to JADE to go first. JADE revises the question she was going to ask -


Did... you travel far?

SUSIE(signing)

Bus. Ten minutes. You?


You’re - you live nearby?

SUSIE nods. JADE’s taken aback. They might have passed each other in the street.

SUSIE(signing)

Do you have a job?


I - I work at the hospital. I’m a nurse.

SUSIE looks impressed. The BARISTA arrives with the drinks.

SUSIE(to BARISTA, signing)

Thank you.





The BARISTA gives a weak smile then walks off. It’s tense. JADE and SUSIE look at each other and don’t know what to say.


Do you -





SUSIE’s phone vibrates heavily and flashes on the table. She looks worried and turns it over without looking at the screen. Another awkward silence.


Erm... I read your card. What you wrote.

SUSIE(signing)

That was a long time ago.

SUSIE looks sad.


I didn’t have it until I bumped into Nigel. He gave me the file.

SUSIE nods.


I want... to ask what changed when I was three? Why did you give me up?

At this, SUSIE feels everything building up, the past, being here right now. JADE looks for a response. SUSIE looks down at her coffee.

SUSIE(signing)

Sugar. I need some sugar.

SUSIE gets up to get sugar. JADE can’t believe it. SUSIE’s phone vibrates and flashes again.

With SUSIE fetching sugar, JADE glances outside the window down the street, seeing a worried-looking older woman, THERESA ASHBY (60s) looking in shop windows along the street, with her phone held out in front of her.

SUSIE comes back to sit opposite JADE. JADE notices that SUSIE puts the sugar down by her coffee, doesn’t pour it into her drink.

SUSIE(signing)

When did you find out you were deaf?


I can’t remember. I feel like I’ve always known. I thought you knew, I thought that’s why -

SUSIE(upset, signing)

No, I never knew. You didn’t speak for a long time, but I didn’t think -

SUSIE’s phone vibrates and flashes again. She looks down at it and seems worried. She looks back at JADE.

SUSIE (CONT'D)(upset, signing)

I don’t want you to blame me.


No - that’s not - I’d like to -

SUSIE looks down, and JADE stops, knowing SUSIE can’t understand if she is not looking at her. A beat. SUSIE looks back up.


I don’t know about you, or my father, my family.

SUSIE(evasive, signing, looks away)

It’s... only me.

JADE takes this in. No wider family. She takes a deep breath and asks the question that’s been on her mind for years.


Why did you give me up?

JADE, determined, looks at SUSIE for her response. SUSIE is unsure how to answer. She looks down, then lifts her head as if she’s about to respond, but she sees something out of the window. She seems spooked.





SUSIE (signing)

Sorry. I’ve got to go -

JADE (signing)

What? I -

SUSIE anxiously gets up and walks out of the cafe, looking worried. JADE is stunned - what just happened? She puts her hearing aids back in and gets up to find out, walks towards the door. The Barista calls after her - what about the bill?

JADE’s torn. She goes to the counter to pay. Looking out of the window, she sees SUSIE in a heated conversation with the older woman, THERESA. She catches only snatches of conversation:

SUSIE(signing)

Sorry. I - I was just meeting my friend.

THERESAWhat friend?!

JADE leaves a £10 note on the counter, then rushes out of the cafe.

EXT. CAFE - DAY (CONTINUOUS)23(THERESA, SUSIE, JADE)(NS BARISTA, NS CUSTOMERS, NS CAR DRIVER, NS PASSERSBY)

As JADE leaves the cafe, determined to confront SUSIE, she walks towards SUSIE and THERESA (who has her back to JADE).

THERESAYou should have told me -

SUSIE(signs and speaks)

I wanted to do this on my own -

SUSIE has a fearful look and shakes her head, indicating to JADE not to come any closer. Feeling rejected, JADE crosses the road. As she does, SUSIE, afraid of losing her, tries to follow her, but THERESA holds her arm to keep her there (assuming SUSIE is trying to get away from her). From the other side of the road, JADE watches SUSIE and THERESA’s argument becoming more heated:

THERESAHow dare you. Going behind my back.

SUSIENot everything revolves around you.

SUSIE loses her temper, breaks free from THERESA, and walks between two parked stationary cars into the road. SUSIE sees a car coming towards her and steps back quickly, but falls backwards and hits her side hard on a parked car. A car screeches as it brakes, sending distorted sound into JADE’s hearing aids. JADE grimaces in pain, closing her eyes and putting her hands to her ears. As the screeching sound fades out, JADE opens her eyes to see SUSIE prone on the ground, THERESA distraught. Her mother. JADE runs towards them. As JADE approaches, she sees distraught THERESA moving towards SUSIE, crouching over her, about to turn her head.

JADE(shouts)

Don’t move her!

THERESA turns around and makes eye contact with JADE. SUSIE’s eyes open and she watches them. NS CAR DRIVER gets out and looks shocked at the scene.

JADE (CONT'D)Let me check her over first.

Cars are beeping their horns. JADE looks at NS CAR DRIVER.

JADE (CONT'D)Can you keep the traffic back?

A still-shocked NS CAR DRIVER goes to deal with the traffic.





THERESAWho are you?

JADEI’m a nurse.

THERESA(upset)

Please help her. She’s my daughter.

JADE’s family suddenly expands.

JADE(confused)

You’re her mother?

THERESAPlease.

JADE snaps back into focus.

JADE(to THERESA)

Can you call for an ambulance?

THERESA gets on her phone, turns her back to SUSIE and JADE. JADE crouches down to SUSIE, who is in pain.

JADE (CONT'D)Does your neck hurt?

SUSIE(signing)

No... Please don’t tell her... who you are.

JADE is stung, but knows she must focus on dealing with the situation in front of her.

JADE(signing)

Where does it hurt?

SUSIE (signing)

Here.

SUSIE points at the side of her chest. THERESA turns around.

THERESAThe ambulance is on its way.

SUSIE is in pain and starts coughing. JADE makes her more comfortable.

THERESA (CONT'D)She’s deaf, so she won’t be able to hear you. I can help to talk -

An ambulance is now at the scene. LEV and FENISHA are with SUSIE and THERESA. SUSIE is on a stretcher. JADE talks to FENISHA.

JADEThere’s no external wounds or bleeding but she seems to have hurt her chest.

FENISHAThanks Jade.

(to THERESA)Can you tell her we’re going to get her to hospital now?

THERESA(clearly)

Susie. You’re going. To hospital now.

JADE looks at SUSIE and feels overcome with emotion. FENISHA notices and wonders why JADE’s so affected.

FENISHADid you see it happen?

JADEYes... I was just passing.

FENISHA isn’t completely sure what’s going on, but gets back ready to take SUSIE into the ambulance. FENISHA and LEV carry SUSIE inside.

JADE (CONT'D)Okay if I come Lev?

LEVSurge pricing kicks in around now Jade, but we’ll do you a deal. Go on.

THERESAI can come, can’t I? I’m her mother.

LEVYes of course.

THERESA looks relieved. LEV smiles and JADE gets in. The ambulance doors shut.

INT. AMBULANCE - DAY (12:35)25(FENISHA, JADE, THERESA, SUSIE)

THERESA, who looks really worried, sits opposite JADE and FENISHA in the back of the ambulance, SUSIE sitting up on a stretcher between them. THERESA is processing everything that’s just happened. As the siren blares out, JADE grimaces as distorted sounds swirl all around.

FENISHAYou okay?

JADEI’m fine.

THERESA speaks ultra clearly, to SUSIE.

THERESA(clearly, silently)

Where were you?

SUSIE looks upset. JADE tries to hide her own feelings. FENISHA notices JADE looking concerned.

FENISHATheresa, could I ask Susie some questions?

JADEI can sign them -

THERESAIt’s fine, it’s better if I do it. She understands me easiest. Lifetime’s practice.

FENISHA and JADE exchange a look.

FENISHAOkay. How is her pain?

THERESA(clearly)

Are you. Still in pain?

SUSIE(mouthing)

What?

SUSIE goes to move her hands to sign, THERESA pats them back down.

THERESA(clearly)

Keep still. Don’t sign.

FENISHAShe can move her arms as long as she’s not in pain.





THERESAI can lip read her anyway.

(to SUSIE)Pain? Pain?

SUSIE(mouths)

Yes.

THERESA(clearly)

THERESA sits down. THERESA focuses on SUSIE, holding her hand and stroking her head. SUSIE makes eye contact with JADE.

LEV and FENISHA push SUSIE on a trolley, with worried JADE and THERESA following just behind. MARTY crosses, and does a double take as he realises JADE is with them and sees how worried she looks. He follows and walks alongside her and JADE hangs back from THERESA.

MARTYI thought you were taking a half day?

JADEYes, I went, I - I just thought I might as well come in for the afternoon -

MARTY(confused)

How did it go?

JADE(upset)

Just - it’s complicated.

MARTY looks really puzzled. What’s going on?

JADE (CONT'D)Talk later. Sorry.

JADE gives him a look as she walks on and MARTY looks worried.

JADE is changed into scrubs. She puts the last of her belongings into her locker. She shuts the locker door and composes herself.

JADE arrives just as RASH is just finishing conducting a primary survey, checking SUSIE’s heart rate and blood pressure.

RASHEverything looks good, your obs are normal and I can’t find anything on primary survey.

THERESA (clearly, to SUSIE)

You’re fine.

SUSIE doesn’t quite catch it.

SUSIE(mouthing)

What?

THERESA(impatient, clearly)

You’re fine.

SUSIE looks really emotional as she looks at JADE. RASH mutters something that JADE doesn’t hear:

RASHWe’ll just get a chest X-ray to make sure everything is okay. Susie can wait here for a few minutes.

JADESorry Rash?

But RASH walks out. The distortion in JADE’s hearing rises. SUSIE looks at JADE. She’s desperate to talk to her.

THERESA(clearly)

Who were you meeting?

JADE looks closely for the answer. SUSIE makes brief eye contact with her, then back at THERESA.

SUSIE(clearly)

Nobody.

This stings JADE. She feels she can hardly breathe. The distortion in her hearing ramps up. She just manages to contain it -

JADE(covering)

I’ll be - back in a minute.





JADE just manages to hold it together as she leaves.

JADE, upset and hurt, walks along the corridor and into a storeroom. Here she releases her anger and hurt at everything that’s just happened, and at the last twenty years. She kicks a box of supplies, then breaks down in tears.

An NS NURSE leaves SUSIE’s cubicle and goes to talk to THERESA in the background. The curtains are slightly drawn. We move closer to SUSIE, torn between her mother and wanting to become closer to the daughter she hasn’t known for so long.

JADE comes out of the storeroom, looking upset. MARTY sees her.

MARTYAre you okay? What happened with your mother?

It takes JADE a beat to compose herself.

JADESorry I couldn’t talk. It went fine, until she walked out, arguing with the grandmother she told me I didn’t have. Next thing, she’s lying in the road.

MARTYThat was her on the trolley?

JADE nods. MARTY looks gobsmacked.

MARTY (CONT'D)Is she going to be okay?

JADEI think so...

MARTYDid you find out -

JADEIt’s not what I thought. She’s deaf too. We signed to each other. She didn’t know I was deaf as well - that’s not why I was given up. I don’t know why.

MARTYWoah.

JADEYeah... it’s a bit... could we -

MARTYI was just taking this plaster trolley for Mike the cyclist’s ankle if you want to swap?

JADE nods.

JADE, looking like she has the world on her shoulders, enters Resus with the plaster trolley, her tinnitus more pronounced now. MIKE, now with saline drip, looks up.

JADEI’m going to plaster your ankle now, Mike.

JADE wraps MIKE’s leg in soft band, and he groans as it’s put over his ankle. MIKE is still really annoyed about the call.

JADE (CONT'D)Why weren’t you eating?

MIKEBusy.

JADE looks at him sympathetically.

ETHANWas there any discomfort, anything that stopped you eating?

MIKENo. I only missed a couple of meals.

MIKE stays quiet. JADE wonders what’s really going on here. CHARLIE hurries in looking panicked.

CHARLIEJade, have you got a few minutes?

JADE looks to ETHAN, who nods and an NS NURSE takes over. JADE goes outside with CHARLIE.

CHARLIEHe’s gone AWOL. His results came back and his tacrolimus levels are undetectable. If we don’t find him soon, his body could reject his heart. The way I spoke to him earlier... I got a letter about Duffy this morning. I was being - now look.

JADE gives CHARLIE a sympathetic expression.

CHARLIE (CONT'D)Can you help me find him? Could you look upstairs? I’ll check outside.

JADEYes.

CHARLIE nods. We follow JADE as she walks quickly to Reception. The chaos of the ED becoming a cacophony of chatter, banging doors, phones ringing, shouting patients. JADE scans the space; no HAFIZ.

JADE walks towards the stairs with urgency, NOEL looking after her - what was that about? JADE glances at FAITH looking in DYLAN’s direction. JADE carries on up the stairs.

MONTAGE: JADE looks for HAFIZ in different wards. Her footsteps clatter disproportionately, distant voices seem distorted. Then a thought occurs to her - she remembers what he said about the place he liked to escape earlier and turns around then goes out through a fire door.

EXT. ED. FIRE ESCAPE / PEACE GARDEN - DAY (13:45)33(HAFIZ, JADE)(CHARLIE, NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE goes up the fire escape. When she nears the top, she sees a weary-looking HAFIZ there, looking over the side, out at the view. She breathes a sigh of relief. HAFIZ looks round and sees her.

HAFIZBusted again.

JADE walks up next to him.

JADEHafiz, everyone’s looking for you, your levels are -

HAFIZLip reading really works, huh?

JADE isn’t sure what he means.

HAFIZ (CONT'D)When I said this was my go-to place.

JADEWe don’t have much -

HAFIZ looks into the distance.

HAFIZI never understood why I was the lucky one. On the heart ward, there were people doing great things, their whole lives ahead of them. How come my numbers came up?

JADEWhy not you?

HAFIZI didn’t deserve it.

HAFIZNo. My heart going bust - it wasn’t bad luck. It was - me.

HAFIZMistakes? I made quite a few of them.

He gives her a look and she understands.





JADEDrugs?

An ambulance siren sounds briefly, JADE’s hyperacusis distorts the soundscape. She tries to ignore it.

HAFIZ(ashamed)

Yeah. Wouldn’t be so bad if I’d kicked the bucket. It’s living with it that’s the hard bit. That’s why I’ve been bad with my pills. I just don’t feel - why - me?

HAFIZ sighs. JADE reflects. She sees CHARLIE looking around outside the ED entrance. CHARLIE looks up and sees them. JADE gives him a look, not wanting to alert HAFIZ, and CHARLIE walks urgently back towards the entrance. Seeing CHARLIE makes JADE think -

JADEThere was a nurse who worked here for years. She was a bit like the heart of everything. She died, and her husband, he’s really struggled. But she donated her organs. So she’s still out there. It’s special.

HAFIZ gives JADE a look as if to say he understands.

HAFIZBut that’s - I’m not special. The way I behaved -

JADEMaybe it’s not about the past. It’s about what you do next.

HAFIZ looks at her as if to say ‘what?’

JADE (CONT'D)It could be anything. For me it was being a nurse. That’s what’s been given to you. Choices.

HAFIZ looks out, emotional.

JADE (CONT'D)Why don’t you come downstairs, then you can think about it?

HAFIZ nods gently. He turns and they walk towards the steps. But HAFIZ starts to faint, JADE supporting him. CHARLIE is just coming up and runs to help.

JADE (CONT'D)Charlie!

HAFIZ is now in Resus and attached to monitors.

WILLHe’s in VT and he’s peri-arrest. We need to cardiovert.

CHARLIE immediately starters drawing up the drugs in preparation. HAFIZ comes round, looking incredibly weak.

JADEAre you ok? Your heart’s going too fast so we need to give you some medicine in your cannula which will make you slightly sleepy, then we have to give your heart a small shock through these pads to slow it down.

HAFIZ nods. He doesn’t really want to do this but he knows he has to.

HAFIZUrban golf coach

JADEWhat?

HAFIZI could be an urban golf coach. That could be my thing.

JADE smiles. HAFIZ grimaces.

JADEThat’s one idea.

HAFIZ smiles weakly.

WILLHafiz? I’m going to get you sedated now.

MARTY comes in and goes up to JADE.

MARTYCan I borrow you?

JADE walks out with MARTY into the corridor.

JADE walks out into the corridor with MARTY. In the background, RASH walks into Resus 2.

MARTYYes. She’s a lot better. We think it’s probably cracked ribs, so she’s in some discomfort but she’s okay. She’s going to be let out soon, so I wondered if you wanted to see her.

JADERight.

MARTYBefore she goes.

JADE sighs and rubs her eyes with her hands. She doesn’t know what she wants.

MARTY (CONT'D)You know where we are.

MARTY puts a hand on her shoulder then walks back towards Reception. JADE spends a moment standing by the vending machine, collecting herself, working out what to do.

JADE, working out whether to go and see her mother or not, enters Resus 2 to find RASH and WILL about to cardiovert. HAFIZ is sedated. CHARLIE is on the phone in the corner, looking tense.

WILLHe’s sedated. Let’s get ready to start.

RASH presses the sync button. JADE looks distracted. The sound distorts, becomes fuzzier. JADE’s here but her mind is elsewhere - thinking about whether to see SUSIE or not.

RASHCharging to 120... Charged, oxygen away, everyone clear. Shocking - shock. Shock delivered.

WILLStill in VT. Increase the energy level to 150 joules.

RASH delivers another shock. CHARLIE looks on, worried. JADE is looking beyond all this.

CHARLIE looks relieved and puts the phone down. JADE smiles realising HAFIZ is ok. She also has a look of determination - realising she needs to talk to SUSIE.

INT. ED. CUBICLES 3 - DAY (14:20)37(MARTY, THERESA, SUSIE, JADE)(NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE walks determinedly into SUSIE’s cubicle. MARTY is preparing SUSIE to leave, with THERESA looking on.

MARTYAnd these are your painkillers, okay?

THERESA(clearly)

Painkillers.

JADE and SUSIE make eye contact. Both know it’s time to talk. JADE’s about to speak when SUSIE taps THERESA’s arm.

SUSIE (mouthing silently)

I want to speak to the nurse on my own.

THERESA You don’t need -

SUSIE(firmly, signing and speaking)

Please.

THERESA looks taken aback. JADE gives MARTY a look.

MARTY(to THERESA)

You could do with a cup of tea couldn’t you Mrs Ashby?

At this moment, looking at JADE and SUSIE, THERESA feels suspicious. Something starts to twig. They leave. JADE is finally alone with SUSIE.

JADE(firmly, signing and speaking)

I want to know what happened. When I was given away.

SUSIE looks upset now. A beat.

SUSIE (signing and speaking)

I didn’t want to. But people said you weren’t developing normally.

JADE (signing and speaking)

Who?


My mother. And the doctor. (MORE)

You didn’t learn to speak quickly, you were in your own world.

JADE (signing and speaking)

Because... I was deaf too.


I didn’t know until today. I thought I was a bad mother.

JADE (angry, signing and speaking)

Because of that, I ended up in foster care?


It was for the best. Look at you now. A nurse.

JADE (signing and speaking, annoyed)

I didn’t have anyone. I used to go from home to home with just a black bag for all my things.

A beat.


I read a letter in my file, which said that one day, I went missing. I was found hours later at a bus stop. When I was found, I said “Mummy.” I thought if I got the bus, I’d find you.

SUSIE looks heartbroken to hear this.

SUSIE(upset, signing and speaking)

I used to think maybe one day I could live on my own, I could get you back...

This breaks JADE’s heart. SUSIE reaches out to hold JADE’s hand, but JADE pulls her hand away just as THERESA comes back in with two cups of tea.

JADE(signing and speaking, disappointed)

Enjoy your tea.

THERESA puts the tea down and looks in JADE’s direction as she walks out, holding back her tears.

JADE is walking out when THERESA follows her.

THERESANurse.

JADE doesn’t hear and carries on walking. THERESA catches up and touches her arm to get her attention.

THERESA (CONT'D)It’s you, isn’t it? Jade.

JADE is stunned. The look on her face tells THERESA that she’s right. THERESA processes it -

THERESA (CONT'D)That’s why Susie went out this morning. Are you - how have you been? We often -

JADEDid you tell Susie that she was a bad mother?

THERESA is about to reply -

JADE (CONT'D)I wasn’t progressing?

THERESAYou weren’t developing normally, no -

JADEI was three. And I was deaf too. Look.

JADE shows THERESA her hearing aids. Her eyes widen.

JADE (CONT'D)And for that, Susie got condemned as a bad mother, and I grew up in foster care?

THERESA It wasn’t just that, I tried my best -

JADEYou just didn’t think she could do it, did you? Because she was deaf. You stopped her believing in herself.

THERESANo. She - she relied on me. For everything. She could never speak clearly -

JADEShe signs! I could have signed -





THERESAThen there’d have been two of you.

JADEAnd what’s wrong with that?

THERESAYou don’t know what people used to say. It was a different time then -

JADEI know that it’s better for a child to be brought up by their mother. And I know it’s okay to be deaf. And to lip read, or sign, or whatever it takes.

As JADE turns around and walks away, we stay on THERESA, seeing her taking in what JADE’s just said. Long-hidden feelings of guilt resurfacing. Did she do the right thing?

INT. ED. RESUS CORRIDOR / RESUS - DAY (14:25)39(MIKE, JADE)(NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE gathers herself and enters Resus. There she sees MIKE, who is looking better but in very low spirits. She picks up and gathers some files, and is about to go out when MIKE stops her.

MIKEYou’ve got to help me leave.

JADE doesn’t quite hear him. She moves nearer to him.

JADESorry?

MIKEI can’t stay here, I can’t face him. I haven’t seen him for a year and a half.

JADEYour dad? What happened?

MIKENothing -

JADEYou were confused and you asked me to call your dad. That says something.

MIKEHe didn’t believe I could do it.

JADEDo what?

MIKEI said I’d repay every penny and I meant it.

JADEThat’s why you weren’t eating?

MIKEI was saving. I said the next time he saw me, I’d have the money.

JADEMoney - for what?

MIKE(guilty)

I was trying to be a proper little Del Boy, starting an app. Thought I’d make a million, turns out it cost all Dad’s savings just to get started. Then the money ran out.





JADEHe asked for it back?

MIKEHe said it was one of those things. He didn’t care. But I care. It was his life savings. I want to keep my word.

JADEHe must have believed in you -

MIKEThat’s why I want to repay him. So I can look him in the eye.

JADEOkay. That makes sense. But it sounds like seeing you is more important than the money?

This makes MIKE think. JADE leaves with the files.

INT. ED. ADMIN/CUBICLES - DAY (14:30)40(ROBYN, JADE, JACOB, FAITH, DYLAN, CHARLIE)(NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE walks to Admin with the files, finding everyone upbeat.

ROBYNOh Jade, fancy chipping in for a present? Max and Zoe worked here before your time and we’ve just heard they’ve adopted a baby boy.

JADEOf course.

JADE gives them a couple of pounds from her pocket and signs the card, passing it on to JACOB.

JACOBThat little boy’s landed on his feet hasn’t he?

This resonates with JADE. CHARLIE nods agreement. As JADE walks on, she notices that FAITH wants to talk to DYLAN. She lip reads them:

FAITHDylan, please. Can we talk?

DYLANWould you - would it be okay to have some space?

FAITH gets the message and walks away. CHARLIE crosses JADE.

CHARLIEJade. The Transplant Team are with Hafiz now.

JADEHow is he doing?

CHARLIE Steady, which is as good as we could have hoped for. You coming?

JADE follows CHARLIE toward Resus 2.

INT. ED. RESUS 2 / RESUS CORRIDOR - DAY (14:32)41(CHARLIE, HAFIZ, JADE, WILL)(MIKE, NS TRANSPLANT TEAM, NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE and CHARLIE enter. HAFIZ looks just a bit better now, more colour in his cheeks. He’s on a trolley, the transplant team prepping to take him away. WILL is beside him. They watch as CHARLIE and JADE walk in side by side towards them -

CHARLIE(to transplant team)

Hi.

HAFIZLaurel and Hardy.

JADEEh?

HAFIZBatman and Robin. Starsky and Hutch. Great partnerships.

WILLI was thinking these two are more like the Chuckle Brothers?

HAFIZ laughs. JADE and CHARLIE smile.

JADESounds like you’re feeling a bit better.

HAFIZA little bit, yeah. Sorry about all the Escape from Alcatraz stuff.

CHARLIEI was a bit blunt with you earlier - I -

HAFIZYou had a point.

(to JADE)That nurse you told me about, I hope her husband’s okay.

CHARLIE looks at JADE and her expression makes him realise what HAFIZ’s referring to, what JADE must have said to him.

CHARLIEAh. Him. Yeah... he’s getting there.

CHARLIE smiles gently and JADE smiles back. HAFIZ seems to pick up on what they’re getting at.

HAFIZCome and say hi, yeah?





CHARLIEWe will.

NS TRANSPLANT TEAM start to take HAFIZ away. WILL exits ahead.

HAFIZJust a sec!

They stop the trolley.

JADEWhat?

HAFIZI might think about teaching.

JADEThat sounds great.

JADE smiles and HAFIZ is wheeled away, leaving just CHARLIE and JADE.

CHARLIE Hope he gets back on track.

JADEI think he will.

CHARLIE reflects.

JADE (CONT'D)Sorry I told him about Duffy - I just wanted to make him see -

CHARLIEYou said what you had to say to get him back. Which was the right thing. You do a lot of the right things.

CHARLIE gathers files as JADE smiles and walks out into Resus Corridor.

INT. ED. RESUS CORRIDOR - DAY (CONTINUOUS)41A(JADE, MIKE, NS MIKE’S DAD, NS STAFF, NS PATIENTS)

JADE walks away towards Cubicles 3. As she walks past Resus, through the window, she sees an older man, MIKE’S DAD, with MIKE. They talk for a moment and then hug. Tears roll down MIKE’s cheeks. MIKE makes eye contact with JADE through the window and smiles at her gratefully.

JADE sees THERESA sitting in a chair, looking distraught.

JADETheresa?

THERESAI - I tried my best. I did.

JADE sits down beside THERESA and waits for her to explain.

THERESA (CONT'D)I followed - all the advice. The professionals... they said she should lip read. Have speech therapy. Her father didn’t, he didn’t have the patience. I kept going.

JADEShe didn’t sign?

THERESAShe didn’t - not then. They told me not to - that I shouldn’t sign with her, or - she wouldn’t speak. But she found it later - sign language - by herself. It didn’t matter what I told her.

JADEWhy didn’t you learn to sign?

THERESAI couldn’t.

JADEAnyone can -

THERESANo. It - it would have been like admitting failure. After all those years...

THERESA sadly reflects on this.

JADEWhy did Susie have to keep it a secret - meeting me?

THERESAWe do everything together. That way, I know she’s alright -





JADEShe’s a grown up -

THERESAShe’s vulnerable. She doesn’t know who to trust. Then I’m the one who has to pick up the pieces.

JADEBut if she can’t do things for herself... then she’s not free.

THERESAWell, if she’s not free, then I’m not either.

JADEWould you have let her meet me?

THERESA agonises over the answer to this question.

THERESAShe was perfectly happy before -

JADEShe wanted to.

THERESAShe goes along with things. Doesn’t think them through. That’s why I want... you to say. You’ll stop contacting her... leave her alone.

JADE is astonished. It takes her a beat to get her thoughts together.

JADEIs that... what Susie wants?

THERESA knows it’s not.

JADE (CONT'D)(angry)

You can’t speak for her.

SUSIE appears, walking steadily, MARTY just behind. THERESA gets up and supports her. JADE also stands. As SUSIE goes past JADE she touches her arm and gives her a warm look. JADE wants to hug her, and moves as if to do this, but SUSIE walks away with THERESA before she can. SUSIE turns towards JADE:

SUSIE(signing)

Bye.

JADE watches as SUSIE and THERESA walk away. MARTY stands beside her.





MARTYYou okay?

JADEI don’t talk much about what I hear. What I miss.





MARTY goes into reassuring mode -

MARTYHardly anyone ever notices you’re deaf -

JADEMaybe that’s part of the problem. Hiding it. Making everything seem okay. Like it doesn’t exist...

They watch SUSIE and THERESA going out of the door.

JADE (CONT'D) ...What it leads to.

MARTYTheresa - she interferes a bit -

JADE(frowns)

Yeah.

MARTYBut she means well.

A beat. JADE thinks. Is this true?

JADEI don’t think she does.

MARTY looks concerned by this. JADE watches as SUSIE and THERESA disappear from view, the doors closing.
