School says goodbye to retiring teachersBy ERIC SCHELKOPF

[email protected]

BATAVIA – For as long asthere has been H.C. Storm El-ementary School, Kathy Hub-bard has been teaching there.

The second-grade teacherhas been at H.C. Storm Schoolsince the school opened in1978. As she has prepared toretire, the school May 28 rec-ognized Hubbard for her ef-forts.

“Her classroom really be-came a learning laboratory,”Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielkesaid, before unveiling a signthat has been installed in frontof the school in her name –Hubbard Circle. “She has madethe world a grander place.”

Hubbard was overcomewith emotion.

“I’ve never been speechlessbefore, but right now, I think Ialmost am,” Hubbard said. “Iwill miss Storm School. It willalways be in my heart.”

Her 36-year tenure withBatavia School District 101puts her in an “elite” group inthe district, Schielke said.

“There aren’t many othersthat have served as long,” hesaid. “Grace McWayne was aBatavia teacher for 59 years. Ithink that is a record that will

never be broken.”Hubbard said she wanted

to be a second-grade teachersince she was 7 years old.

“My second-grade teacherwas such a major role mod-el for me,” Hubbard said. “Iwanted to be just like her.You always hope that you willhave an impact in children’slives.”

One of the biggest thingsshe tried to do for her studentsis to instill in them a sense ofself worth.

“I want to make sure theycan be the best they can be,”Hubbard said.

Schielke also honored re-tiring music teacher RoxanneSemonchik, who is leavingH.C. Storm School after al-most 20 years of service.Schielke proclaimed the day“Roxanne Semonchik Day.”

Fittingly, the school’sfourth- and fifth-grade chorussang “Go With A Song In YourHeart” to Semonchik, who hassung the song every year tograduating fifth-graders.

“I’m emotionally drainedhere,” Semonchik said afterthe song. “It’s the sweetestrendition that I’ve ever heard. This place has been my homefor 20 years. It is a second fam-

ily to me.”

While cataracts (clouding of the eye lens)

are primarily associated with older adults, they

are also found, or soon develop, in about 0.4%

of newborns. “Congenital cataracts” do not

necessarily need to be surgically removed. Very

small cataracts and those that are positioned on

the periphery of the eye lens may not sufficiently

hamper vision to the point where immediate

treatment is required. If not, postponing treatment

until after normal growth and development

occur avoids potential complications such as

secondary glaucoma. However, if cataract surgery

is indicated, it is usually performed between six

weeks and three months of age. Surgery may

include implantation of a replacement lens or

to inherited tendencies, infection, metabolic

problems, diabetes, trauma, inflammation, or

drugs (such as tetracycline taken by pregnant

Storage tank accident damages electricgenerating capacity for Prairie State

By BRENDA [email protected]

A malfunctioning waterstorage tank at the Prairie StateEnergy Campus near Marissain downstate Illinois will notaffect power availability, thecompany said this past monthin a news release. It includesthe electric utilities of Bataviaand Geneva, which are among300 communities invested in thecoal-fired power plant.

According to a statementfrom the power plant, when oneof its two 800-megawatt unitswas taken offline for a sched-uled maintenance outage, awater storage tank overflowed. This caused “an unexpectedlyhigh release of steam and waterthat damaged the siding and as-sociated equipment.”

“There was no explosion,no fire and no injuries that oc-curred,” spokeswoman AshlieKuehn said.

The plant uses water tomake the steam which turnsits turbines to make electrici-ty, she said. The steam and wa-ter release damaged the sidingand equipment, she said.

“The power plant has somevery key components, and twocomponents that make powerare the boiler and turbine gen-erator, and they were not dam-aged,” Kuehn said. “The storagetank needs to be repaired andthe siding, and we expect thoseto be competed by mid to lateJune when the [second] unit isgoing to be returned to service.”

Once repairs are completed,Unit 2 is expected to be returnedto service, so it will producepower for most of the summer, according to the company’sstatement.

Geneva is a member of – andhas a contract with – NorthernIllinois Municipal Power Agen-cy for an entitlement share of 35megawatts in Prairie State Gen-erating Company which ownsPrairie State Energy Campus,a coal-fired downstate powerplant.

Batavia also is a member ofthe Northern Illinois MunicipalPower Agency and is in a long-term contract to purchase elec-tricity from Prairie State.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielkesaid he’s unaware of any im-pact the incident might have onsupply or costs to the city.

“There could be, but I’m notaware of any at the moment,”Schielke said. “I’ve seen somepictures online of siding blownoff some of the buildings therebut nothing that would a havemajor impact here.”

Geneva officials were un-available for comment.

The Institute for Energy Eco-nomics and Financial Analysisin Cleveland, which conductsresearch and analyses on finan-cial and economic energy andenvironment issues, called foran “exhaustive investigation.”

“There needs to be an ex-haustive investigation into thecause of the explosion and intosafety procedures at the plant,”

executive director Sandy Bu-chanan said in a statement.“That investigation should takeplace in a transparent mannerso that everyone concernedabout the plant can learn asmuch as possible as soon as pos-sible.”

Kuehn said officials still arein the process of assessing whatcaused the tank to overflow andrelease steam.

“There was no explosion,”Kuehn said, countering Buchan-an’s comments. “There was a re-lease of steam and water.”

The cities’ investments inPrairie State Energy Campushave come under fire by the Si-erra Club and local citizens.

Narcan program to address heroin overdosesBy ASHLEY SLOBODA

[email protected]

GENEVA – Municipal po-lice officers in Kane Countysoon could carry a medicationwhich would help save peoplefrom overdoses of heroin andother drugs.

Under a Kane CountyHealth Department program, police officers would betrained to administer Narcan,

a trade name for Naloxone –a medication used to reverseopioid overdoses.

Barb Jeffers, executive direc-tor of the Kane County HealthDepartment, told a CountyBoard committee this pastweek an orientation was held inApril, and she hopes to get offi-cers trained and equipped withdoses by this summer.

“If you look at the data, it’snot going away,” she said.

In a meeting earlier thisyear, Jeffers presented data onthe number of heroin-relateddeaths in Kane County since2009. At seven such deaths,2010 recorded the lowest num-ber. The peak was recorded in2012 with 26 deaths.

The deaths have occurredthroughout the county, in-cluding in St. Charles, NorthAurora, Geneva, Batavia andElburn.

Although emergency medi-cal technicians already admin-ister Narcan, Jeffers said, thenew program targets policebecause they typically arriveon the scene quicker. Medics, however, still would be called, she said.

Jeffers said Kane Countysheriff’s officers already ad-minister the medication.

The Illinois Department ofHuman Services Division of

Alcohol and Substance Abusecertifies the trainers, Jefferssaid. She said the countyhealth department will pro-vide the training and manage-ment of the Narcan program.

Officers will be allowed tocarry only two doses of the med-ication at a time, Jeffers said.

Because of the way the pro-gram is set up, she said, thehealth department will be able

to track the data.

Health department works to find county’s health issuesBy ERIC SCHELKOPF

[email protected]

GENEVA – The Kane Coun-ty Health Department met

May 29 with various agenciesand other stakeholders acrossKane County to begin the pro-cess of gauging the health ofcounty residents.

“We want this process tobe as representative as it canbe,” said Michael Isaacson, theKane County Health Depart-ment assistant director forcommunity health, in address-ing the more than 100 peoplewho attended the May 29 kick-off session at the Northern Illi-nois Food Bank in Geneva.

The previous Kane CountyCommunity Health Assess-ment was done in 2011. Thereport revealed the top sixthreats to community healthin Kane County were obesi-ty; chronic disease, includingdiabetes, heart disease andcancer; infant mortality, child-hood lead poisoning; commu-

nicable disease; and poor so-cial and emotional wellness.

Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesmanfor the Kane County Sheriff’sOffice, was at the session. Hepointed to the growing heroinuse in the area as a problem.

“It will take groups like this toget a grasp on it,” Gengler said.

Batavia Deputy Fire ChiefRandy Banker said he thought itwas good to get agencies togeth-er to talk about different issues.

“We probably share a lot ofthe same issues,” Banker said.

Laurie Call, director of theIllinois Public Health Insti-tute’s Center for CommunityCapacity Development, toldattendees public health is a

shared responsibility.“It is not just the responsi-

bility of health care providersto improve health,” Call said.“Everyone has a unique con-tribution.”

The IDPH is helping KaneCounty Health Department doa new health assessment of thecounty. As part of the process, there will be community focusgroups, as well as a phone sur-vey, Call said.

“We are trying to find out,how healthy are our resi-dents,” Call said.

Additional Democrat files

for Nov. 4 election ballotBy BRENDA SCHORY

[email protected]

GENEVA – One additionalDemocrat filed for the Nov. 4general election ballot by thedeadline, which was June 2,Kane County Clerk Jack Cun-ningham said.

Martha Hanna of the 200block of Evergreen Drive,Batavia, filed to run in theKane County Board race forthe 11th District. She will runagainst John Martin of Gene-va, who won the Republicannomination in the March 18primary.

Hanna lost to CountyBoard member Mike Dona-hue, R-Geneva, in 2012. Do-nahue said he would not seekre-election this year.

Because no Democrat orthird-party candidate filedto run for county clerk, Cun-ningham will seek a fourthterm unopposed.

Mark Guethle, chairmanof the Kane County Democrat-ic Central Committee, said hetried to slate a candidate torun against Cunningham, buthe could not find one who waswilling.

“I worked it, but nobody

wanted to run,” Guethle said.“It’s hard to get someone torun countywide. It’s hard toget people to run for office. They do not want to do it orthey do not have the time. ...I tried. It was not for lack ofeffort.”

Guethle said Democratswere represented in otherraces.

“We have Democrats forCounty Board up for re-elec-tion,” Guethle said. “We havea sheriff candidate, two con-gressional candidates andcandidates for statewide rac-

es.”

Charles Menchaca – [email protected]

More than 100 people participated in a walk-a-thon May 31 at Rotolo Middle School to benefit Mike Hubert

of Batavia and his family.

Walk-a-thon raises nearly$5K for Batavia family

By CHARLES [email protected]

BATAVIA – The May 31

turnout at a Batavia family

walk-a-thon benefit put a smile

on Danielle Burciaga’s face.

There were more than 100

people on or near the Rotolo

Middle School outdoor track

one hour into the event. Mem-

bers of the Batavia Fire De-

partment also showed up to

help cool down the runners

by setting up one of their fire

hoses.

The walk-a-thon raised

$4,878, which was within

range of Burciaga’s initial

$5,000 goal. She said there

were generous donors who far

surpassed the $10 a person en-

try fee.

“I was just trying to do

something nice for some-

body,” said Burciaga, a Cort-

land resident. “In the end, it

was all worth it for me.”

Burciaga, an Illinois Cen-

tral School Bus driver, orga-

nized the three-mile walk-

a-thon for Batavian Mike

Hubert and his family. Hubert

was diagnosed in 2010 with

non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,

which is a cancer of the lymph

tissue. He recently completedhis second stem cell trans-plant and was expected to pos-sibly come home soon fromNorthwestern Memorial Hos-pital in Chicago, his wife Kellisaid.

Burciaga has gotten toknow the Huberts throughdriving their three children –Jack, 12, and 6-year-old twinsLucas and Kasey – to school atdifferent times. She would seeMike Hubert at the bus stopevery morning and found outabout his diagnosis after shecommented about his appear-ance one day.

Kelli Hubert has been tak-ing care of her three sons andthe family expenses while herhusband recovers. Burciagatook it upon herself to helpwith efforts to support thefamily, including handing outfliers at the Batavia Fire De-partment and various otherlocations. Even so, she refusesto take all the credit.

The people who came onMay 31 made the event a suc-cess, Burciaga said. That in-cluded Kevin Patrick, one ofthe Huberts’ next-door neigh-bors.

Patrick’s son Brandon

mows the Huberts’ lawn, soit’s one less thing they haveto worry about. He said theHuberts are a compassionatefamily.

“They’re always willing tohelp, and it’s nice that we canreturn something,” Kevin Pat-rick said.

Scott Nelson of ArlingtonHeights reached out to a sup-plier of his employer to havesports apparel and other itemsdonated for the walk-a-thonraffle.

He and Mark Sullivan, alsoof Arlington Heights, wereat the May 31 event becausethey have known Mike Hu-bert since they were in thirdgrade.

Nelson was impressed byBurciaga’s efforts, especiallysince she sees the family foronly a few minutes each daybut cares so much.

Perhaps the most impressedand grateful person of all wasKelli Hubert, who fought backtears May 31 as she called Bur-ciaga an angel for helping herfamily.

“She’s not a close friend, but she saw a potential needand reached out,” Kelli Hubert

said.

STRUMMIN’ HOME

Avon Dale guitarist Matt McCarterhopes to see some friendly facesin the crowd when his band playsat Kiss The Sky record store in

Batavia later this month.McCarter, 24, who now lives in

Memphis, Tenn., was born and raised inBatavia and is a 2008 Batavia High Schoolgraduate. Avon Dale will perform at 7p.m. Sunday, June 29, at Kiss The Sky, 180W. First St., Batavia, as part of the store’s“Live From Kiss The Sky” music series.

More information is available byvisiting Kiss The Sky’s website, www.kissthesky.net.

Kane County Chronicle reporter EricSchelkopf had the chance to talk to Mc-Carter about the band and the upcomingshow.

Eric Schelkopf: Youmust be pretty excited

about the upcoming show.

Matt McCarter: We’re very excited toreturn to Batavia, not only to see friendsand family, but it will be great to comeback home and kind of take what wedeveloped down in Memphis and bring itback up to Batavia.

Schelkopf: You guys have a busy summer. Your

summer tour goes from Thursday, June 12, until

Thursday, July 24. Is that where you guys love to

be, on the road?

McCarter: Since I teach full time andour drummer also teaches full time, wereally haven’t had the opportunity to dothat long stretch on the road. So this willbe the first time that we really have thatgood chunk of time off.

We’re really excited. We haven’t reallydone anything like it, so it’s a big step forthe band.

Schelkopf: I understand Avon Dale formed

while you were attending the University of Illinois

at Urbana-Champaign.

McCarter: It started as a collaborationbetween Conrad Polz and I, the otherguitarist in the band.

I spent some time at my lake housefor a summer, and I recorded an acousticdemo and brought it back to school. AlecHeist (our drummer), was in the teachingprogram with me and he had heard it, andthat’s what kind of got him to bring downhis drums.

Schelkopf: And I understand that none of

you actually read music.

McCarter: It’s all through our own.Conrad and I kind of helped each other

learn guitar and songwriting.I was an athlete all through high

school and at the University of Illinois,I was on the wrestling team, and that’swhere I met Conrad.

Schelkopf: I understand the band is named

after the street where you and Conrad first

started writing songs.

McCarter: Conrad’s parents hadowned a house on Avondale Avenue, just off campus. That’s where we firststarted writing songs, on Conrad’sroof.

Schelkopf: You guys kind of dip into differ-

ent genres – rock, blues, soul. Who are some

of your musical inspirations?

McCarter: We draw from severaldifferent inspirations. I know Alec isa big Dave Matthews fan. Conrad andmyself draw from various influences, people like Van Morrison and maybe alittle bit of Kings of Leon, as well.

Schelkopf: You have added a fourth member,

Andrew Allen, on bass.

McCarter: That was a component we

thought we were always missing. Hehopped right in, and has really enjoyed it.

Schelkopf: You’ve recorded at Ardent Studios

in Memphis, where many famous bands have cut

records over the years, including Led Zeppelin

and The White Stripes. Did you feel a vibe when

you were there?

McCarter: When you walk in there, everything just looks very retro. Whenwe were in that studio, yeah, you couldfeel it.

When you are walking to the studio, you are walking by all the platinumrecords on the walls. You can really feelthe history in the place. It was a surrealfeeling being in there.

Once we come back from the tour, weplan to record some new material withMike Wilson of Ardent Studios. We planto do an EP of some of our songs, andthen plan to do a full-length album.

Schelkopf: What is the chemistry like in the

band?

McCarter: Everyone is determined. There’s a lot of determination and hardwork in the band.

GENEVA – You may have recognized itby the lengthy single-file line often sprout-ing from its understated entrance, or theyouthful, margarita-induced buzz emanat-ing from its intimate patio area. Soldieringpassed other Mexican eateries as one of thefinest – according to some critics – not onlyin the Kane County area but Chicago, aswell, is Bien Trucha.

Bien Trucha, which aptly means to beon top of your game, is ranked No. 1 on alist of Zagat’s top 50 Mexican restaurants inthe Chicago area; recently made Thrillist.com’s list of 12 Best Illinois RestaurantsNot in Chicago; received rave reviews fromTV’s “Check Please!” roundtable; and itsPescadillas – shredded swordfish hard-shell tacos with avocado-habanero pico degallo and epazote – landed on Chicago foodcritics Phil Vettel and Kevin Pang’s list offavorite dishes of 2013.

And, perhaps most importantly, it wasvoted the No. 1 Mexican Restaurant in the2014 Kane County Chronicle “Best of theFox” Readers Choice Awards.

If those aren’t enough well-respectedopinions to get you through the door, thenI don’t think anything I have to say willmake you go either.

The line may be a deterrent (the restau-rant does not take reservations) but A TodaMadre, which is conveniently situatedright next door, serves food off of the samemenu, and takes limited reservations, pro-viding ample opportunity for more peopleto sample the various creations coming outof Bien Trucha’s kitchen.

My dining companion and I visited on aweekday night around 5 p.m. (no line, butbusy) and took seats at a communal tableon the outdoor patio right away.

My dining companion commentedafterward that “the al fresco dining onsuch a beautiful day was only enhanced bythe friendly staff ... and the festive musicwafting over us.”

The menu is tapas-style, and diners areencouraged to share plates to be able tosample more fare. Chips and bean dip wereset upon the table, so we could nibble whilemaking mutual menu selections.

To start, we opted for the Ceviche DelMes ($10), the restaurant’s monthly cevi-che special. The colorful dish came withshrimp, strawberries and cucumbers ina zesty lime sauce. The lime was slightlyoverpowering, but all of the ingredientstasted fresh and blended nicely.

The vast array of tacos lining the menuwill make the decision-making processvery difficult. Literally, every taco dishsounded delectable: The a la Diabla comeswith sautéed shrimp, butter-mojo de ajo, chipotle lime and an avocado slice; theBarriga de Puerco with slow-roasted pork

belly, adobo, salsa verde cruda, cucumber

and queso fresco; and the Pescado with

crispy-beer-battered tilapia, red cabbage,

onion, tomato, lime and chipotle-morita

aioli. (None of which we had the pleasure

of ordering.)

Instead, we ordered Bien Trucha’s

namesake tacos ($11), the Pastor tacos

($10) and Pollo tacos ($10). To accompany

the tacos, the Mexican enclave also serve

Cazuelitas and Tortas (lunch only), soup

and salad, Brochetas (dinner only) and side

dishes, such as Esquites ($5).

The Bien Trucha tacos (a table favor-

ite) were served on a wood plank with a

healthy layer of grilled skirt steak, chorizo,

an oozing topping of melted chihuahua

cheese and a smattering of roasted tomatil-

lo salsa to set everything off.

The Pastor tacos were served with a

healthy amount of ancho-guajillo mar-

inated pork, cilantro, onion, a sliver of

pineapple and morita salsa. The sweet acid-

ity from the pineapple balanced the savory,

marinated pork.

The Pollo provided a slightly different

take on the taco. The tortillas were crispy,

and rolled with shredded chicken breast

and potato hash with layers of crema, que-

so and a generous smattering of morita-ser-

rano salsa poured over the top.

I’ve tried Esquites in many Mexican

restaurants and I think Bien Trucha does it

best. The grilled corn with melted epa-

zote-butter, lemon-aioli, queso cotija and

chile piquin create a semblance of flavors

and textures that sing on the palate.

All of the drinks being shaken, poured

and stirred behind the bar are equally as

inventive and fresh as the food. A plethora

of margarita options line the menu and all

are created using fresh fruit and juices.

For a special treat, try the Ahuacatl ($11)

– an avocado margarita made with agave

nectar, lime, exotico blanco, orange liquor

and mezcal mist.

Bien Trucha has created a well-respect-

ed name for itself; its reputation stretching

across Kane County borders and standing

strong among the best in Chicago’s fickle

foodie scene.

SPORTS&RECSaints success leads to state berth

By JAY [email protected]

ROSELLE – It doesn’t take ahistory buff to know FightingSaints soccer is drenched intradition.

England native Paul Jenni-son – who coaches East’s girlsand boys programs – was farremoved from Norris Stadiumas the Saints’ girls programruled the state shortly beforeSt. Charles High split, winningfive successive state champi-onships under former coachJoe Moreau between 1996 and2000.

Consider those echoes of-ficially awakened after theSaints plowed past Huntley 2-0in the June 3 IHSA Class 3ALake Park supersectional. TheSaints are headed for the statesemifinals for the first time asSt. Charles East. They’ll playLincoln-Way North at 5 p.m.Friday, June 6, at North Cen-tral College in Naperville.

“You can’t help but know, working in this school, howthis program used to be,” Jen-nison said. “It was an extremehonor for me when I got theopportunity to take both [theboys and girls programs],and there was no doubt in mymind that my goal was to getthe program back to where itwas.

“I’m not saying that just bygetting to the final four thatwe’re there, but I think we’reon the right track. It also helpsthat this group of girls is ashardworking, motivated, self-less and driven as they are be-cause you can’t do it alone.”

East (18-4-5) and Huntley(19-7) were scoreless at half-time despite the Saints mostlycontrolling possession.

Senior Rion Gaffney gaveEast a 1-0 lead with 28:08 to playin the second half, and fromthere, the odds swung might-ily in the Saints’ favor. All 19of Huntley’s wins this seasoncame via shutouts.

“We heard that all theirwins were unscored on,” Eastjunior defender Mallory Mol-lenhauer said. “We knew thatthe second we would get a goalthat we would win this game. That’s what we tried to do. Thefirst half, I think we had a lotof nerves, but the second half,we came in there and we knewthat we needed to get a goal, and the second that we did. We

could control the game, andthat’s what we did.”

Huntley goalkeeper Jessi-ca Galason made a stop beforeGaffney closed in moments lat-er for a second opportunity.

“Amanda (Hilton) had theinitial shot, and then I thinkit bounced off the keeper orSophie (Jendrzeczyk), I don’tknow who,” Gaffney said. “Islotted it upper left, and it was

a beautiful strike. … We felt itcoming. We worked our hard-est to get that goal.”

Jennison delivered an im-passioned speech to the Saintsas the match stood scorelessat halftime, imploring themto show just the persistencewhich allowed Gaffney to suc-cessfully cap East’s freneticpush in the box.

“We talk about moments

that you get to show what youcan do, moments that you getto really just prove you havethe heart and desire to besuccessful,” Jennison said.“When that ball is scramblingaround there in a supersec-tional game, somebody’s got tothrow themselves on the endof it. Rion was the first one todo that. That can be the differ-ence between a career beingover and continuing.”

East midfielder Kelli San-to Paulo hit the crossbar lessthan two minutes after Eastwent ahead, but her frustra-tion didn’t linger long.

Santo Paulo’s picturesquecross set up junior forwardDarcy Cunningham for a head-er score, making it 2-0 Saintswith 13:10 to play, allow-ing East goalkeeper KendraSheehan (four saves) and theSaints’ defense to relax a bit.

Huntley coach Kris Grand-er cited East’s midfield domi-nance as the biggest differencebetween the teams, saying theRed Raiders changed forma-tions as a concession to theplay of Saints midfielders suchas Hilton, Santo Paulo andAnna Corirosi.

“Their defense is good, buttheir defense comes from themidfield,” Grabner said. “That[Hilton], man, she’s a specialplayer, and she’s surround-ed by good players. That wastough.”

East was solid throughoutthe season, but the Saints seemto have found another gearcome the postseason.

While Lincoln-Way North– the Saints’ state semifinal op-ponent Friday, June 6, – need-ed a late, tying goal en route toa penalty kick victory June 3against Lyons, the Saints havenot required overtime in anyof their five postseason tri-umphs.

“All these postseasongames, we’ve been just dom-inating,” Jendrzeczyk said.

“There’s no stopping us now.”

Sarah Nader – [email protected]

There are many ways to have fun in the great outdoors this summer, and they don’t allhave to be organized sports. Sure, it’s fun to play a game of soccer or baseball withyour friends, but if you don’t have enough people to ield a team, don’t let it stopyou from enjoying the summer sunshine and fresh air. Here are ive classicways to get outdoors this summer.

Getmoving!

1) Climb a tree,or the monkey barsYour parents most likely climbed

trees when they were kids, and yourgrandparents probably did, too. There’sa good reason – it’s fun, and just a littlebit dangerous. OK, don’t climb a reallybig tree that will scare your neighborswhen they see you up there, but climbone that looks relatively safe and checkwith your parents before you scamperup there. Or go climb the monkey barsat the park instead!

2) Go swimmingWhat better way to cool of

from the scorching summer sunthan a quick dip in the pool? Goto a public pool, beach or parkwith a lifeguard, and jump on in!If you don’t know how to swim, sign up for lessons with yourlocal park district – and don’tforget the sunscreen.

4) Draw with chalkYou can play games like

hopscotch. You can sendsecret, coded messagesto your neighbors. Youcan practice your drawingand art skills. Or, you cansimply write your name. However you choose to useit, sidewalk chalk is a goodway to graiti your drivewayand not have it be permanent.

Award-winning “Drawing with mark”DVD episodes are on sale at Michael’s.Drawing lessons, fun facts and animation. Visit us atwww.Drawingwithmark.com.

3) make a tire swingIf you don’t have a playground nearby,

don’t fret – just use your imagination.Get an adult to help you attach an oldtire to a sturdy tree branch with a ropeand make a swing. Or recycle somewood to build a treehouse. Whatever itis, be safe while you’re doing these kindsof projects, and let the sky be the limit.

5) play a classicgame in the yardTag, hide and go seek, capture the

flag – when all else fails in the sum-mer, grab some pals and pull out oneof these classics.
