Maksim Chmerkovskiy createsbuzz at Aliano’s Ristorante

By ERIC [email protected]

BATAVIA – Tears streamed

down Kayla Taylor’s face

June 6 after meeting “Danc-

ing With The Stars” champi-

on Maksim Chmerkovskiy

during his appearance at Alia-

no’s Ristorante in downtown

Batavia.

“He touched my heart,”

said the 16-year-old Oswe-

go resident, who is a dancer

herself. “He kissed me on the

cheek, and he told me to save

a dance for him.”

Chmerkovskiy won this

season’s “Dancing With The

Stars” with his dancing part-

ner, Olympic ice dancer,

Meryl Davis. Aliano’s was

hosting a trunk showing of

designed himself.

Taylor and her mom, Deb-

bie, waited in line for more

than three hours for the

chance to meet Chmerkovs-

kiy. Even though he arrived

at the restaurant later than

scheduled after his limousine

got stuck in traffic, Taylor

was not deterred.

“I want to thank him for

being an inspiration to me,”

hours for chance to meet Ch-

merkovskiy.

“We’re big fans of the

show,” she said. “Our favorite

season was this season. I real-ly respect his talents. I thinkhe is very passionate.”

“This has been an amazingtrip,” he said to the crowd ofpeople lined up outside therestaurant. “I had no idea peo-ple would show up like this.”

That included ChristinaCarrasco of Oswego and hermom, Arina.

“He was as nice as couldbe,” Christina Carrascosaid after meeting him. “Hethanked us for waiting as longas we did.”

Aliano’s Ristorante ownerMario Aliano said he was gladthe event helped to create abuzz and bring more people todowntown Batavia.

“It is a great draw for thecommunity,” Aliano said.

He also shares a bond withChmerkovskiy, as he is a GIAcertified gemologist and mas-ter goldsmith and owns Ros-sario’s Fine Jewelry in WoodDale.

If you’re a middle-aged individual, you should

know that “age-related macular degeneration”

(AMD) is the most common cause of vision loss

among those in your age group. While the disease

does not cause complete blindness, it does cause

a gradual loss of central vision, which is needed to

read print, drive, identify faces, and perform other

important tasks. This happens as a result of the

central portion of the retina (macula) becoming

thin and degenerating over time, which is the case

with the most common type of AMD, “dry” AMD.

In one in ten cases, “wet” AMD leads to much

more sudden vision loss due to blood vessel

hemorrhaging. Regular comprehensive eye exams

can lead to early detection of AMD.

P.S. If you look at a special piece of paper with

horizontal and vertical lines (Amsler grid) and

see any missing or distorted lines, then AMD is a

possible cause of the visual problem.

Wheaton group tries to resurrect

proposal for Thomle buildingBy ERIC SCHELKOPF

BATAVIA – A plan to puta restaurant and apartmentsin the city-owned Thomlebuilding, as well as a private-ly owned adjacent building, might be resurrected.

St. Charles-based Corcor-an Commercial Real Estate inApril withdrew its proposal toacquire the Thomle building at2 E. Wilson St., Batavia, alongwith the privately owned 4-6 E.Wilson St. building. Corcoranhad plans to develop restau-rant space on the first floorand five apartments on the up-per levels.

In addition, Batavia busi-ness owner Michael Grudeckiin February pulled his propos-al to turn the Thomle buildinginto a martini lounge. In pull-ing his proposal, Grudecki, president of Vignette HomeDecor in Batavia, said he wastired of the city dragging outthe process.

Batavia Enterprises RealEstate has been marketingthe 4-6 E. Wilson St. buildingfor the past two years. AustinDempsey, the company’s vicepresident, said he recently wasapproached by a group out ofWheaton that had interest indeveloping the Thomle build-ing and 4-6 E. Wilson St. build-ing for a restaurant and apart-ment project.

“It’s very preliminary,”Dempsey said. “I believe inthe plan. I think downtownBatavia needs more residen-tial living. It fits in perfectlywith the downtown masterplan.”

Batavia Enterprises is mar-keting the 4-6 E. Wilson St.building, which is owned byan out-of-town couple. At onepoint, Batavia Enterprises hadsubmitted a proposal for devel-opment of the 10,470-square-foot building and the Thomlebuilding by a group of inves-tors.

Dempsey said he was “disap-pointed” the Corcoran proposaldidn’t happen. And he believesone hurdle that still needs to beaddressed is the lack of parkingin that corridor.

“Something has to happenfrom a parking standpoint fora restaurant to want to comein to that corridor,” he said.

Since 1997, the city hasowned the historical, 1876-built

City Administrator Bill Mc-Grath said city staff is recom-mending the Thomle buildingreturn to that use for the timebeing.

Organizers’ effort to breakgroup hug record is put on hold

By ERIC [email protected]

BATAVIA – Organizershave put on hold efforts to set aworld record for largest grouphug planned for Sept. 13 in Bat-avia.

“It’s too massive of an under-taking to do it by September,”said Batavia resident RandySimonian, who had been orga-nizing the Batavia Group Hug.“Basically, it’s a timing thing.”

Simonian had hoped to

surpass the current GuinnessWorld Record for largest grouphug of 10,554 people set in May2010 in Ontario. He said the

Batavia Group Hug might hap-pen at a later date.

“If not a group hug, we aregoing to break a world recordof some sort,” Simonian said.“The excitement of breaking aworld record is on everybody’smind right now.”

Simonian said he is usedto organizing large events be-cause he plans large-scale cor-porate events for a living.

In a post on Batavia GroupHug’s Facebook page, Simoni-an wrote “Due to multiple con-straints (time, sponsorship, volunteers, finances, time, time, time...), it would be nearimpossible to safely break therecord, with only three monthsof production time remaining.

“I’d truly need a small,full-time team to accomplishour goal,” he wrote. “With theworld watching, there’s noth-ing that would break my heartmore than a failed attempt forBatavia ... or worse yet, someunknown obstacle that putsour friends and neighbors in

harm’s way.”

BATAVIA – Officials fromthe Batavia VFW are askingBatavia aldermen to reconsiderthe city’s video gambling ban.

DaleRichard,pastcommand-er of the Batavia Overseas Post1197 VFW and incoming districtcommander, told aldermen atthe June 2 Batavia City Coun-cil meeting the organization iscompeting with organizationswho have video gambling, suchas the Aurora Turners Club andthe Aurora VFW.

“We are in competition forvolunteers,” Richard said.

The Batavia VFW has a

post at 645 S. River St.Batavia, along with Geneva

and St. Charles, doesn’t allowvideo gambling. Some commu-nities which originally bannedvideo gambling now allow it,including North Aurora, Sug-ar Grove and Elburn.

Bars, truck stops, socialclubs and veterans organiza-tions in those communitiesand counties with video gam-ing can have up to five gamingmachines each. The IllinoisSupreme Court in 2011 upheldthe constitutionality of the Illi-nois Video Gaming Act.

Video gambling terminalshave to be in an area restrict-ed to people older than 21, and

those under 21 cannot play ona video gambling terminal. An establishment’s liquor li-cense can be taken away if it iscaught breaking the rules.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schiel-ke suggested the issue be dis-cussed at a future Joint Com-mittee of the Whole meeting.Video gambling started in Illi-nois in October 2012.

“All the little kinks withvideo gambling have beenironed out at this point,” Rich-ard said June 3. “The rules areset, the enforcement is set andwhere the money goes is set.I feel very comfortable thatthe City Council will look at it

with an open mind.”

“It’s too massive of an

undertaking to do it by

September”

Parkway project gets funding boostBy ASHLEY SLOBODA

[email protected]

GENEVA – The Illinois De-partment of Transportationhas committed $45 million tothe Longmeadow ParkwayBridge, county officials an-nounced June 4.

News of the financial boostreceived a round of applauseduring the Executive Commit-tee meeting.

County Board memberMaggie Auger, R-Algonquin,said she was pleased to learnthe county was awarded thismoney and thanked all in-volved.

The Longmeadow projectwill add about 5.6 miles ofroad from Route 62 across theFox River to Huntley Road inthe Algonquin, Carpenters-ville and Lake in the Hillsarea.

Construction on the four-lane bridge could begin assoon as 2015, according toKane County. Costs are esti-mated at $120 million.

County Board Chairman

Chris Lauzen said he is “de-lighted” to have met and ex-ceeded his goal of securingan additional $10 million to$15 million of state or federalfunding.

“Timing was just right inthis case,” Lauzen said, notingteamwork also was key.

Kane County Transporta-tion Director Carl Schoedelsaid in a written statementthe Longmeadow project hasgotten “unprecedented sup-port” from local governmentbodies.

Kane and McHenry coun-ties have passed resolutionssupporting the project, ashave 10 municipalities, in-cluding Algonquin, Bar-rington Hills, Carpenters-ville, East Dundee, Gilberts,Hampshire, Huntley, Lake inthe Hills, Sleepy Hollow andWest Dundee, according toKane County.

The Kane/Kendall Councilof Mayors, of which BataviaMayor Jeff Schielke is chair, contributed $5 million of the$45 million, Lauzen said.

Tolls will contribute tofuture funding. Prices havenot yet been set for the tolls, which will be collected with anI-PASS-compatible system incooperation with the IllinoisTollway, according to KaneCounty.

Drew Frasz, who chairs theTransportation Committee, said the Longmeadow proj-ect is the largest active job inKane County and rivals theStearns Road project in SouthElgin.

The Stearns Road BridgeCorridor opened in December2010 and connected RandallRoad in eastern Kane Countyto James “Pate” Philip StatePark in far western DuPageCounty.

The Longmeadow proj-ect has completed the PhaseI engineering stage, and thecounty is continuing with landacquisition, said Frasz, R-El-burn.

“Things are moving alongvery well,” he said.

New AED bill, inspired by formerSt. Charles student, signed into law

By ASHLEY [email protected]

ST. CHARLES – Withtheir children and grand-children nearby, George andMary Laman of CamptonHills sat next to Gov. PatQuinn on June 5 as the gov-ernor signed a bill inspiredby the Lamans’ late daughterinto law.

George Laman said he hasno doubts his daughter issmiling down on the family, proud.

“This was something that, even though it was not easy, had to be done,” he said. “Weas a family did it.”

The Lauren Laman Bill re-quires all students in Illinoishigh schools to learn how touse an automatic externaldefibrillator and administerCPR.

Lauren Laman was 18when she suddenly went intocardiac arrest during drill

team practice at St. Charles

North High School in 2008.

Although an automatic ex-

ternal defibrillator, or AED,

was yards from where she

collapsed, it was not used,

and paramedics were unable

to resuscitate her when they

arrived.

The Lamans drafted the

bill with help from state Rep.

Dan Burke, D-Chicago, who

filed it in October 2013.

Despite people telling

George Laman the bill did not

have any chance of success, the right people believed init, he said, describing thesupport as “utterly tremen-dous.”

Quinn signed the bill, which amends the CriticalHealth Problems and Com-prehensive Health EducationAct, at the Associated FireFighters of Illinois Conven-tion in Bloomington.

George Laman said it wasan emotional moment. Keep-ing their promise to theirdaughter “means everythingto us,” he said, adding he alsoexperienced a feeling of emp-tiness knowing the price hisfamily paid.

“At least we know we willsave many lives in her name,”he said.

The law takes effect Tues-day, July 1.

“Lauren, we love you,”George Laman said. “We willlove you forever, from our

family.”

“This was something

that, even though it was

not easy, had

to be done. We as a

family did it.”

HOME AT THE RANGE

BATAVIA – Even though Open Range

in Batavia now has a new name, its new

management said that regular customers

should still expect great food and service.

Open Range American Grill, located at

35 N. Water St. in downtown Batavia, in

May changed its name to The Range Grill

& Tap to reflect a change in ownership.

The restaurant had previously been con-

nected to Open Range Southwest Grill,

which still operates a restaurant in Sugar

Grove.

“I wanted it to be mine,” said Jeremy

Bertrand of North Aurora, the restau-

rant’s new co-owner and manager. The

restaurant’s co-owner is Rob Piton, who

was involved in the restaurant when it

was known as Open Range and prior to

that, Lodge on the Fox.

This is Bertrand’s first venture into the

restaurant business.

“It’s a great opportunity to use what I

know,” he said.

Bertrand already has expanded the

restaurant’s menu, adding items such as a

New York strip filet mignon.

“I wanted to give people more options,”

he said.

Bertrand also has added live entertain-

ment at the restaurant.

“I want to have live entertainment ev-

ery once in a while to spice things up,” he

said.

The Range also has undergone some

physical changes, including the instal-

lation of garage doors that separate the

restaurant’s screened porch from its main

dining room, which will help the restau-

rant better accommodate private parties,

Bertrand said.

Those customers who dined at the

restaurant when it was known as Open

Range American Grill might be familiar

with the restaurant’s chef, who now works

at The Range.

“I got lucky and inherited him,” Ber-

trand said.

The restaurant’s popular fresh prime

burgers served with a variety of toppings

are a carry over from the previous menu.

“The chef does a phenomenal job with

the burgers,” Bertrand said. Bertrand’s

favorite burger is The Honky Tonk, which

is a fresh prime Angus beef patty topped

with a fried egg, cheese sauce, onion

strings, and Applewood smoked bacon on

a toasted brioche bun.

“It is definitely a meal,” Bertrand said.

“You should get your fill. Any of the burg-

ers are unbelievably great.”

The Range prides itself on its freshness.

“The burgers are never frozen,” Ber-

trand said. “They are always fresh. We

make sure we get new orders every week

so we don’t have to freeze anything.”

The restaurant also makes its own tor-

tilla chips and smokes its own meat for

such entrees as its smoked brisket tacos.

“It has a unique flavor,” he said.

Other items include ribs, Texas beef

brisket, Maryland crab cakes and stone

fired pizza. The Range also does catering.

Bertrand said he always is open to sug-

gestions from customers.

“I want them to feel comfortable in

here,” he said. “I love listening to my cus-

tomers. I want their experience to be the

best experience possible.”

The Range, 35 N. Water St., is open from

4 to 11 p.m. Mondays, 11:30 a.m. to mid-

night Tuesdays through Thursdays, 11:30

a.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays and

10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sundays.

ris could show up to workin shorts and a polo andleave wearing jeans and asweatshirt.

The Basel Cellars gener-al manager and winemakerwas introduced to the winethrough the restaurantindustry. As a sommelier,Morris sought out wineswith an acidic backbonethat could complementmeals. The desert of easternWashington is the ideallocation for Morris, who hasrelished the opportunity tomake balanced wines fromestate vineyards.

Winemaker spotlightJust like Morris, who

adds layers of clothes atnight in the fall, the vines atBasel Cellars also undergo atransformation.

While the cold mightforce Morris to add a sweat-shirt, the Basel Cellars’vines are busy losing layers. With daytime highs in the80s and nighttime lows inthe 40s, the vines undergo adramatic physical change.

In the sunshine they areable to ripen and add sugar. But as the temperaturesrapidly descend and nightfalls, the grapes develop acrisp acidic balance. It’s thebest of both worlds: wineswith New World-style fruitdevelopment and Old World-style acidity.

“Eastern Washingtonis so unique,” Morris said.“There is no place like it inthe world. The winemakershere have done a great jobof embracing our climateand terroir. The wines fromWalla Walla show a greatsense of place. Our climateis so northern it is on linewith Bordeaux. But we getmore sun and cooler nights, which is like the RhoneValley.”

Because of his experiencein the restaurant industry, where Morris sought tomarry food with the perfectwine, Basel Cellars has abalanced portfolio.

“The acidity we get fromour nighttime temperatures

makes our [wine] more

European in style,” Morris

said. “Wine should enhance

the experience of a meal.

My training as a sommelier

helps me focus on restraint

as a winemaker.”

What to buy• Basel Cellars, Merri-

ment, Walla Walla Valley

2007 ($36): Dark fruit, mocha

and espresso notes expertly

mingle in this wine. There’s

a big mouthfeel that’s held

together by a crisp acidi-

ty and rocky minerality.

This drinks like a special

occasion wine at an amazing

price.

“Merriment represents

the best of our vineyards,”

Morris said.

• Basel Cellars, Claret,

Pheasant Run Vineyard,

Walla Walla Valley 2009

($15): This entry-level wine

is perfect for a weeknight

dinner. A blend of cabernet

sauvignon, merlot, cab franc

and syrah has cassis and

dark chocolate notes, a vel-

vety mouth feel and a gamey

backbone from the syrah.

“We want our entry wine

to drink like a $40 wine,”

Morris said. “We want that

kind of value to translate to

our whole lineup. We want

to blow you away with our

quality for the value.”

Wine 101Basel Cellars is a certi-

fied sustainable estate that

also is salmon friendly. It’s

a certification that ensures

the sensitive salmon-breed-

ing grounds in the Pacific

Northwest won’t be harmed

through farming.

Local musician to offer summerlanguage-learning camps for kids

By KARA [email protected]

ST. CHARLES – After living in Europefor four years, Brianna Smith will returnto her native St. Charles to share a uniqueprogram that combines music and foreignlanguage-learning for children.

With a Bachelor of Music degree in violinperformance from the University of IllinoisChampaign-Urbana, the musically inclinedSmith will teach Music Lingua – German andSpanish foreign language-learning summercamps – in July and August.

Music Lingua is a program that uses musicmovement, storytelling and art to teach for-eign language to children ages 2 to 8 years old(ages up to 10 years old can be considered).

“I just think it will be something fun,”Smith said. “When kids are so young, theylearn really quickly. People think, ‘Oh it’s tooyoung to learn,’ but I started playing pianowhen I was 5 years old, and now I still play.”

Smith said she fully realized music’s abilityto connect to memory when she played pianoduring a previous summer at the Hunter ClubVillage apartment community for seniors inSt. Charles, where her grandma, who expe-rienced brain damage after having a cardiacarrest, resides.

“We were doing these Broadway hits that[my grandma] would have known when shewas younger, and right away without evenlooking at the words, she remembered thelyrics,” Smith said.

In addition to Smith’s love of music, she

discovered a passion for languages after livingin Vienna, Austria, and Madrid, Spain, whereshe learned German and Spanish.

“Music is one of the best ways to learnother things because it breaks down inhibitionand makes it fun to learn,” Smith said, addingthat – as a certified instructor – she taughtEnglish and music through the Helen Doronearly English learning schools in Austria andMadrid. “I did it myself in Austria … so whynot try it [in St. Charles] and see if it works, because it worked so well there.”

The camps will consist of learning a foreignlanguage through song, vocabulary, visuals, games and crafts. Depending on the level ofinterest in each language, children will be sep-arated by age, and classes will be coordinatedto best fit the schedules of interested partici-pants. The Spanish class theme will be “Underthe Sea,” and the German class theme will be“On the Farm.”

The location of the class still is being con-sidered.

“It depends on how many people sign up,”she said. “See how much interest we can drumup and then go from there if we’re going torent out a space or if we’re going to do it in mybasement or in my backyard [in St. Charles].”

If more children sign up, Smith said theMECA music school in South Elgin may be asuitable meeting space.

Participants will receive learning materi-als, books and a CD.

For information, camp dates, pricing or tosign up, email Smith at [email protected] call 630-377-2513.

Shead helps Saints win two relay state titlesBy KEVIN DRULEY

[email protected]

Jordan Shead anchored twochampionship relays at theClass 3A girls track and fieldstate meet this past month, win-ning each by fractions of a sec-ond yet hardly leaving doubt.

In what has become a riteof St. Charles East springs,Shead stormed down the frontstretch to help the Saints cap-ture the 4x800 meter and 4x400en route to the first team tro-phy in program history after athird-place finish.

A whirlwind season filledwith shuffling and lineuppermutations ended with theSaints climbing the podium atEastern Illinois, eager to ex-hale. All the better for Shead.Along with runners, the KaneCounty Chronicle Girls Trackand Field Athlete of the Yearbattles sinus troubles stride-for-stride, too.

“You are just really fuss-ing and tired and you want tosleep all the time,” Shead said.“You get headaches and a lot offacial pressure and really badsore throat, and yeah …”

Consider it the lone,cringe-worthy attribute ofShead’s performance as a se-nior. Also consider it history,as she is set to undergo sur-gery to clear her sinuses Fri-day, June 13.

With her upcoming recov-ery in mind, Shead recentlytook to occasional runningand biking while visiting fami-ly in North Carolina.

“Just trying to maintainwhat I have so it’s not totallyall gone,” Shead said.

Bed rest aside, Shead aimsto be as sharp as possible as sheprepares for a college career atNotre Dame. Shead commit-ted to the school in January –choosing the Irish over Dayton,Loyola and Wisconsin – on theheels of a breakthrough juniorseason in which she took fourthin the 3A 400 while helping theSaints’ 4x400 to a state title.

While she matched the

fourth-place finish in the 400

as a senior, her development

in the 800 diversified Shead’s

skill set while boosting the

Saints’ medal hopes.

Following coach Tim Wolf’s

philosophy to “train outside the

box,” she made her 4x800 debut

at the 2013 Kane County Meet as

the Saints finished in a county

record of 9:20.13. An encourag-

ing split and newfound adrena-

line in running middle distance

inspired Shead in the offseason.

“She’s obviously really tal-

ented and she’s really fast, so

once she started the 800, she

was really good at it,” said ju-

nior Torree Scull, the lead leg

of the 4x800.

Adding the 4x800 and/or

800 to her repertoire also built

Shead’s endurance for the 400

later in meets. An extra work-

load did not affect her wind or

sinuses much. Shead tried not

to think about them but also

knew staying active would

help keep any potential prob-

lems at bay.

The quartet of Scull, sopho-

more Anastasia Honea, senior

Corrin Adams and Shead com-

peted together for the first time

in the state prelims. The 4x400

was a different story, as junior

twin sisters Allison and Eliz-

abeth Chmelik returned with

Shead from the past season’s

winning relay. Freshman Ca-

sey McNichols filled the spot

left by Britney Williams’ grad-

uation.

Shead, a Saints captain,

gladly assumed Williams’ lead-

ership void, a role made more

difficult by the team’s nearly

season-long spate of illnesses

and injuries.

In the week ahead of the

county meet, Wolf said 26 ath-

letes missed at least one prac-

tice.

“I think I was ready to step

up and stuff,” Shead said. “As

a captain, I knew that comes

with a lot of responsibility. I at

least tried to make the younger

kids feel comfortable because

there’s always lot of nerves, so

I’d try to lead by example.”

Scull noticed the subtle

style in Shead, admittedly“not an extremely loud, echo-ing person,” upon entering theprogram.

“She wasn’t ever the run-ner that was so competi-tive that you came across asmean,” Scull said. “She wasalways lighthearted and reallyfriendly, so she was a lot of funto run with.”

Shead looks forward to keep-ing the momentum going atNotre Dame and is certain hertime at East will provide fuel.

“It was a really amazing ex-perience, the end of my senioryear,” Shead said. “I was justreally proud of the whole teamand how we were able to get a

trophy.”
