Research  Study  

!  Conducted  by  the  Center  for  the  Future  of  Arizona  in  partnership  with  the  Morrison  Ins2tute  and  published  in  2006  

!  U2lized  matched  pair  methodology  of    Jim  Collins,  author  of  Good  to  Great  

!  Iden2fied  331  elementary  and  middle  schools  in  Arizona    with  a  student  popula2on  of  at  least  50  %  La2no  and  50%  on  free  and  reduced  lunch    

Research  Study  

!  Of  the  331  schools  iden2fied,  found  12  schools  with  significantly  higher  test  scores  than  predicted  based  on  the  demographic  model  

!  Matched  the  12  high  performing  schools  with  mirror  image,  underperforming  schools  

!  Iden2fied  the  prac2ces  common  to  successful  schools  that  are  “bea2ng  the  odds”

!  Build  to  Suit  Beat  the  odds  schools  are  figuring  out  ways  to  customize  instruc2on  and  interven2on  so  they  suit  each  student’s  needs  exactly.  

The  Beat  the  Odds  InsEtute  

!  Founded  in  2007  by  Dr.  LaYe  Coor  under  the  umbrella  of  the  Center  for  the  Future  of  Arizona  

!  Focused  on  implemen2ng  the  results  of  the  research  study  

!  Developed  the  School  Partners  Program  

The  School  Partners  Program  

!  Began  with  27  schools  in  2007-­‐2008    !  Aimed  at  serving  low-­‐income,  La2no  and  minority  students  in  grades  K-­‐12    

!  Currently,  provide  services  to  an  average  of  70    schools  each  year  in  Maricopa,  Pima  and  Yuma  coun2es,  including  schools  in  the  Salt  River  Pima-­‐Maricopa  Indian  Community  and  in  the  Baboquivari  Unified  School  District.

!  To  significantly  improve  individual  student  achievement  in  Arizona  and  align  student  performance  with  na2onal  and  global  standards.
