no general course or credit requirement for the doctorate. A

part of the work consists of regularly scheduled graduate

courses of instruction in the chosen field and in related subject

areas outside the department called cognate subjects. In most

areas, a student must pass a comprehensive examination in a

major field of specialization and be recommended for

candidacy for the doctorate. In addition, the student must

pursue independent investigation in a subdivision of the

selected field and must present the results of the investigation

in the form of a dissertation. A special doctoral committee is

appointed for each applicant to supervise the work of the

student for both selection of courses and preparation of the

    dissertation.

Candidacy is achieved when the student demonstratescompetence in his/her broad field of knowledge through

completion of a prescribed set of courses and passing a

    comprehensive exam. Requirements regarding foreign

language and non-technical courses are left to individual

departments or programmes. A prospective doctoral student

should consult the program advisor for specific details.

    STUDENT CAFE

The Student Cafeteria are a natural meeting place for students.

The University runs two on-campus cafeterias with a varied

selection of menus including vegetarian and non-vegetarian

food. Menus are composed bearing in mind that most students

    live on a tight budget.

    SOCIAL COUNSELLING

Life as a student is not always simple and stress-free. Often a

student needs someone to talk to. Social Counselling Service

consists of a team of professional counsellors to whom

students can turn for help. Here students can discuss their

problems, whether they are of an academic, financial or

personal nature. The counsellors also have experience in

dealing with the concerns of international students.

SPORTS AND RECREATIONSports Department caters to all interests ranging from

competitive sports to basic fitness programmes. There are

facilities for indoor training under the supervision of fully

qualified instructors and plenty of opportunities for enjoying

outdoor life. These include football, cricket, basketball, tennis

and table tennis. An amphitheatre and three state of the art

fully equipped auditoriums also provide ample opportunities

    to conduct intellectually stimulating activities.

    STUDENT HOUSING

PDPU runs seven student halls of residence in the campus,

and these can house about 1000 students. Most of the

accommodation consists of single rooms with attached

bathrooms. The students live on a twin-sharing basis. A

common recreation lounge allows the students to relax and

    de-stress themselves.

    37

    37

    Student Governance

At PDPU, students are given numerous opportunities to

shape their experiences and contribute to important decisions

facing the University. Whether you choose to run for an

elected office, seek an appointed position or establish a new

organization, you have the opportunity to engage in the

important work of shaping your experience and contributing

to the experiences of your peers. Take this opportunity to

sharpen your leadership skills, learn about yourself and others,

    and broaden your own horizons.

Dedicated to the philosophy that students should be directly

involved in the decisions that affect them, the Student

Government (SG) serves as the primary representative and

liaison of PDPU students to the faculty, administration,

trustees and broader community. The SG provides a range of

services to the student body like funding individual student

organization events, sponsoring campus wide social events

    and offering leadership training opportunities.

Programmes and activities at PDPU are shaped primarily by

students who assume leadership and volunteer positions in the

schools across the campus. Its members represent student

interests on committees and projects addressing a wide range

of issues facing the community and help shape the quality of

life for students. Student Governing Board oversees the

    student organizations, including cultural organizations,

performance-based and theatrical groups, media and

publications groups, competition and special interest groups

    and pre-professional organizations and societies.

Students are the architects of campus life at PDPU. They

govern themselves; they start new organizations, publications

and performing groups; they sit with faculty and

administrators on policy committees; they bring in speakers

and entertainers; they plan scholarly conferences and plan

events; collect funds for the events; they point out

institutional problems and come up with solutions. They havean unusual amount of power to shape not only their own

experience at PDPU, but also policies that will influence the

future direction of t he University. Great things happen when

intelligent people are empowered to build their dreams.

PDPU students rise to the challenge, time and again.

On the University campus you will find an extensive range of

cultural and social activities and there is guaranteed to be

something for you, whether you are interested in sports or

politics, arts or alternative culture. All PDPU students are

welcome to take part in all extra-curricular activities.

There are more than 20 active student associations, societies

and clubs. Among the associations are theatre groups, choirs,

political societies, student publications, sports clubs, and

special interest groups. The social and cultural activities on

campus are there to provide one with a rewarding experience

as a student at the University. Taking part in one or several of

these student activities is an easy way to get into student life

    and to make new friends.
