We are coming up to the most important time of Year 11 and your school career to date. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the mature way in which you have approached this year and for the spirit of support and enthusiasm you have shown. I have spoken with many teachers, who have taken the time to speak to me about how much they have enjoyed working with their Year 11 groups. Suggestions are that you are going to be one of the most successful year groups we have had for a long time and I share this optimism. I have really enjoyed being your Head of Achievement and look forward to seeing a lot of you on the 28 th June for the Sixth Form Induction Day. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you all the very best of luck in your GCSE exams. For those of you joining us from other schools, I also extend very good wishes for the remainder of your examinations. I look forward to meeting you on Induction Day. The visit was to study social primate behaviour as part of the A level course. The day was a great conclusion to the A level course. We arrived at 10:00 am and spent the first hour visiting numerous primates including the gibbons, Woolley monkeys, orangutans, chimpanzees, spider monkeys, capuchin monkeys, macaque monkeys, marmosets and lemurs. We then met one of the animal behaviour experts who talked to us about aspects of primate behaviour including operant and classical conditioning as well as imprinting and social group behaviours. Later in the morning we conducted an ethogram studies (a psychological study of social primate behaviour) on selected primates. The focus was on the behaviours exhibited by the animals e.g. grooming in the chimp groups, mother-infant bonding in the Woolley monkey enclosure, pair bond- ing with gibbons and the gibbon’s vocal communication mechanisms. We renewed our adoption of Silvestre, a Sumatran orangutan. He will form part of a world breeding programme, when he grows up as part of the conservation work on this endangered species. We got to go behind the scenes where we saw people making set and costumes for shows to come in the near future which really does show that the theatre isn't just for the people on the stage! We pride ourselves in not only providing our young musicians with outstanding teaching, but in providing excellent

facilities and opportunities. Throughout the year, our students are able to perform to live audiences through our

Summer and Christmas Concerts, School Productions, KS5 Performance Evening, Wow Factor Talent Camp and

‘Live Lounge’ events. Furthermore, we encourage our students to participate in performances to the community and

offer the opportunity to attend workshops from visiting professional musicians. Trips are always valuable highlights

with opportunities to watch live performances at local venues such as The BIC & Pavilion and Poole Lighthouse,

and watching the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Personal development is also high on the agenda, with stu-

dents engaged in Subject Ambassador roles to support teaching and inspire our younger musicians throughout the

school and the opportunity to attend a wide variety of clubs: Instrumental clubs, KS5 Choir, Concert Band (Grade 4

and above), Cubase and Sibelius Composition Clubs and Theory Club.

Our Sixth Form Debate club organised a lunch-time Brexit debate. The session was lively, thoroughly researched and very well attended, with the result being overwhelmingly that we should remain in the EU. The winning side won by a land-slide - gaining 88% of the vote. It will be interesting to see whether our Sixth Former’s vote reflects the view of the Nation next month in the real referendum.

Physical Education There are many sporting enrichment opportunities in the Highcliffe Sixth Form. Students are able to develop their

rugby skills further by being part of the Rugby Academy with training sessions by an external coach and many

fixtures throughout the rugby season. Some students also have the chance to be part of the coaching team for the

lower school Europe Sports Tour. Additionally, other sports that students can participate and compete in include

netball and rounders, with a regular ski trip to Italy. Students are able to develop their leadership skills by achieving

a Sports Leadership Award whereby students regularly take part in leading local primary school sporting events as

well as large school events such as Sports Day. Students studying sports based courses are able to attend revision

courses led by examiners.

On Thursday 28th April the year 13 Music BTEC students organised a live lounge event. The evening was a fantastic success raising over £150 for the Light-house Youth and Community Centre. The students did an excellent job of organising and hosting the event as well as performing, along with the

year 12 BTEC music students Theo Meddleton, Anthony Bailey and Nathan Smith.

On April 4th Ed van Wingerden and his team, Wessex LeAF, won the U18 Volleyball National Final in Kettering and on the 6th of May, they also won the U18 Grand Prix, making them double national champions! If selected for the UKSG team, Ed will be playing for the Eng-land Juniors (U18) against the home nations at Loughborough Universi-ty. In October, if selected, Ed will complete in the Northern Europe-ans competition for U19s, having already played in the U17s twice in the last two years. We wish Ed the best of luck.

A company of 12 students took part in their performance of 'What are they like?' by Lucinda Coxon at the Light-house Theatre in Poole. After an in-tense rehearsal schedule the group of year 11, 12 and 13 students showcased their work to a live audience in a pro-fessional setting. During this process they had to develop their own interpre-tation of the script given to them. They worked alongside directors from the National Theatre and professional artists and developed their work from the feedback given. They performed a very challenging physical and choral piece of work with great success. Well done to all involved.

Good luck to Kathryn (Y13) and James Moses (Y9), Alberto Arevalo Delgado (Y13) and Jack Ogden (Y9) for the Routes into Languages MFL Pop Video Competition. Our final edition for the 2015/2016 academic year will be sent during the last week of term.

Due to the examination focus by students and staff alike, the enrichment programme has been reduced at this time. A full programme of activities will commence again in September.

Sixth Form Newsletter

On 11thMay, Year 12 and 13s showcased their final per-formance for this academic year at the incredible Highcliffe Castle. The Year 12s based there piece on the story of Anne Frank. They used her diary as a stimulus to develop their own script. The group focused on the key points in her life and all members of the group played the character of ‘Anne’. For the Year 13s, this was a sad occasion as it was to be their last performance as a group. However, the storyline was far from sad as they did their piece based on the storyline, Alice in Wonderland. This

entailed all the cast’s makeup and costumes to be BONK-ERS! And it really was.

Drama BTEC final year performance

Students had the opportunity to visit lots of stalls from many univer-sities and learn about different courses, UCAS and how to apply for university. Most students took the opportunity to visit a lecture to give them a feel of university life. The advantages of the day were that it helped some students make choices on the courses they wish to study in higher education or the university they may wish to apply to. An inspiring afternoon was had by all.

Music

After attending Highcliffe Sixth Form, I went on to study music at Surrey Uni-versity and this year, I have been suc-cessful in signing a major record deal

with Island Records. The school was a huge part of my development as a person and musician. I just wanted to show my appreciation to the teachers and school really. I think the years you spend at school are incredibly important - not only in terms of education, but in building self-confidence and ambi-tion - and I was lucky enough to have teachers who were genuinely interested in and excited by what they taught and by the work the students produced...(I'll never forget Mr. Bryden's absolute love for the English language! Those lessons inspired me im-measurably).

Highcliffe 6th form provided me with support, structure and challenges that enabled me to develop into the person I am today. The environ-

ment we studied in was relaxed, yet focused, ensuring we all worked hard to obtain our desired grades. I have many fond memories of my time there. I have built up, and now manage two business, both in the sports industry. I am currently Manager and Head Coach of Christchurch Tennis Ltd and Director of Ator-ro sports. Since leaving Highcliffe, I have been able to experience some fabulous moments, one of these was seeing the Davis Cup trophy close up (the largest trophy in the world) and meeting Leon Smith, our Davis Cup Tennis Captain, who was Andy Murray’s coach when he was young and is now one of his clos-est friends.
