LOCATION | Porto, PortugalPROGRAM | Collective Housing

This exercise consisted on reorganizing a specific part of the city: two urban blocks in contact with a structural axis of the city, the Boavista Avenue, and a residencial neighborhood designed by a well-known portuguese architect, Agostinho Ricca. These two scales and realities define this site and my main purpose was to respect them. Therefore, the buildings closer to the big avenue are taller and offer different kinds of use - commercial, offices and housing - while the buildings placed inside the block are shorter and try to extend the atmosphere felt on the rest of the neighborhood throught their design. After finishing the urban plan a building was chosen to develop on a bigger scale. The interior organization is formed by three modules composed by different appartments with independent accesses. The facade is structural and also very dynamic due to the wooden sliding panels that run along it. These panels have an active role in the thermal performance of the building and at the same time interfere in its external appearance, creating a random pattern that is both surprising and flexible.

LOCATION | Matosinhos, Portugal PROGRAM | Dance Academy

This proposal wants to be sensitive to the site, respecting all its features such as elevation, accesses, surrounding buildings, materials and landscape view. The existing granit wall was used as part of the project and helped determinate the position of the volumes, create a diversity of spaces and accentuate the connection/allignment to the surroundings. The use of platforms to mold the public space permited not only the creation of two complementary plazas at different levels but also the smooth and gradual work of the strong inclination of the ground. The small boxes placed on top of the main platform try to establish a relation with the fragmented scale of the surrounding context. This strategy permited to reach an aesthetic concept that is both visualy interesting and practical, because it facilitates the distribution of spaces in a hierarchical way. The main platform, that supports and connects those boxes, includes the most public-oriented spaces like the auditorium, library store or cafeteria.

LOCATION | Morro da Conceição, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil COLLABORATION | João Pedro Fonseca, Mariana Fernandes

This project’s main goal is to bring Morro da Conceição and its surroundings back to life. The strategy consisted on creating a complex system, composed by three distinct parts, connected by a pedestrian path, that together would create a whole new spatial and social dynamic and help rehabilitate the area. By spreading the attention to these three spaces and its connections, it would be possible to create a stronger context and increase the quality of live of all the inhabitants. After listening to the requirements of the population (interviews) it was concluded that the priority should be to create spaces dedicated to children, youth and elderly - the most neglected ones on the area. Therefore, three different points were carefully chosen, and on each one of then was developed a sort of center dedicated to each generation, having in mind what kind of equipment they need.

LOCATION | Madureira, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil COLLABORATION | Juliana AcarPROGRAM | Public Library

The strategy is to design a building that takes on a critical position in the urban context in order to establish itself as a cultural monument. The volume occupies the whole site and defends a certain interiority, promoted through the central patio. It choses to face back to its surroundings, caracterized by its poverty, disintegration and noise, due to the will of promoting a calm and inspiring environment that any library requires. The entrance of the patio is facing the train station in order to seduce the people that arrive in that transportation, while the other one, located in the corner, wants to attract the walkers coming from the Shopping and the Park. The solar orientation is a big concern in a tropical country and because of that a big facade facing north was planned and equiped with brise-soleil to control the incidence inside. The interior spaces are organized by sections: administrative, social and didactics. The last one is a very calm place, equipped with diffuse lightning, light colours and materials, and intense visual contact with the patio and the park. The ramp that leads to the mezzanine is a very sculptural object that marks the whole space. The mezzanine is dedicated to the use of the private library collection and that’s why it’s entrance is controlled.

LOCATION | Alentejo, PortugalPROGRAM | Housing

This project wants to create a pure volume, perfectly integrated in its envolving context that proposes a clear internal organization and transmits an innovative aesthetics sense based on the expression of the dominant material - wood. The program is spread in only one floor and organizes itself hierarchically, placing the bedrooms in a more private area and the social spaces in a more public and transparente zone. The independence of private and social areas allows them to function autonomously. The transition between these spaces is made in the entrance lobby, enriched by the presence of a green patio that iluminates and embellishes the whole ambience. The exterior appearance of the house wishes to coordenate three main materials: concrete - marking the slabs; wood - adorning the walls, floors and ceillings, and glass - giving the transparency and permeability to the building, and strenghtening its connection to nature. The horizontal tension of the volume is contradicted by the vertical cut of the wooden slats and by the visual presence of the structural pilars and chimney, culminating in perfectly balanced composition.

PROJ 6rehabilitation project_2015

LOCATION | Porto, PortugalPROGRAM | Housing

This project consists in the adaptation of an abandoned office, located in the basement of a building, into a functional and confortable studio apartment. The purpose was to create an openspace flat that promotes the living space in an sociable and communicative way. These spaces were developed in intense continuity in order to make the most of all the area and natural light available. The bedroom works like a small alcove (only to sleep) isolated from the rest by sliding panels. The reduced area of the property is compensated by its optimization, achieved through an efficient and functional spatial organization. The dissolution of limits between compartiments together with the exhaustive built-in storage room and the carefully placed lightning, contributes to the proper functioning of this studio. The mostly soft and white materials help to difuse the light - scarce resource - and to create a clean and wide atmosphere.

INTERNSHIP DURATION | DEC ‘13 - DEC ‘14ENTITY | João Paulo Loureiro Arquitecto Lda

During the one-year long internship at JPL Arquitecto, it was possible to play different professional roles and participate in several architectural projects. This internship not only boosted the self-growing process but also allowed the perception of the reality of the job through the direct contact with clients, engineers and legislation. It was essential in terms of taking individual responsibility and at the same time assimilating team work dynamics. Some of the works on wich I have participated actively are presented below.
