Connect the dots, connect with others.
Your assessment rides or runs are probably the most
important 30 minutes you’ll spend on a treadmill or trainer
all season, because they’re going to improve all your future
miles. Starting off easy, you’ll be prompted by BSXinsight’s
mobile app to increase intensity at three minute intervals,
continuing until you can’t go any longer. Then simply
stop the workout, and dock BSXinsight in its charging
station. Your data automatically uploads to the web
for analysis.
Beyond measuring lactate threshold and training zones,

The insight behind lactate
training.Lactate threshold refers to the maximum sustained effort
your body can maintain for an extended period of time –
usually around 45-60 minutes. It’s essentially your body’s
redline, and it’s more than 95% accurate at predicting
race finish order. Training (or racing) over the redline can
only last for so long, due to the anaerobic contribution to
your muscles, which increases based upon intensity and
duration of your workout. Eventually your body is forced to
slow down or bonk altogether.
But always training under the redline results in never
learning to rev the engine high enough, sacrificing speed
and limiting endurance. Ideally, during training and many
racing events, you want to spend much of your time right
on or even well under the redline to prevent premature
fatigue, while saving enough kick for a strong finish or
mid-course advancement.
So how does lactate work? When your body produces
energy, it also produces lactic acid as a by-product. Contrary
to past belief, lactate isn’t entirely bad. In fact, it isn’t even
the cause of muscle soreness and fatigue. Lactate actually

serves two important purposes. It’s a secondary source of
fuel for working muscles, which, trained properly, allows
you to keep going longer and harder. And more importantly,
increasing lactate levels are what let you know that fatigue-
related muscle acidity is also increasing. Essentially, it’s
the warning marker of excessive redlining and premature
shutdown, a measurable substitute for fatigue.
Lactate threshold training is the practice of adjusting
performance to spend the appropriate amount of time
on, above, and even below the redline so you’re always
training at purposeful intervals for your planned race.
This is accomplished using pace, heart rate, or power-
based training zones that are determined by your lactate
threshold. With every threshold-based training session,
you’re pushing that redline just a little bit higher so that your
overall threshold increases. Which means that not only is
every session optimized, but that you’re actually training
yourself to feel better, race better and be better. It’s the
most effective way to beat your personal best, and keep
on doing it.

generate your unique profile. Analyzing the signal features
in action generates a real-time lactate threshold curve that’s
as accurate as previous blood-based methods.

Combine two athletes with an MD, a BA in Computational
Mathematics and two MBAs. Add adrenaline. Now add
a fervent desire to discover the ultimate performance

Dustin Freckleton received his MD/MBA degree from the
University of Texas Medical School at Houston and has
an extensive research background in health and human
performance. He has served as an instructor at the
USATF National Podium Education Project and is a USATF
level 1 certified coach.
Nithin Rajan graduated from Rice University in 2006 with
a BA in Computational and Applied Mathematics, and from
The University of Houston in 2010 with an MBA. Previously,
he served as COO of Blue Box Health, Inc., has been
named as inventor on two patents, and was awarded
the American Gastroenterological Association Student
Research Fellowship Award.
