Want a clean place to eat? Look no further! Lunch patrons of the BRSI lunch program can be comforted to know that they are eating in one of the cleanest, most sanitary eating
establishments in Brunswick County. Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. (BSRI) “cleaned up”---pun intended---at the recent Golden “A” Awards
presentations given by the Environmental Health Section of the Brunswick County Health Services.
Golden “A” Awards are presented to food establishments in the
county that score a 95% or better on every inspection made by the
Brunswick County Health Department during the year. They also give
the Platinum Golden “A” Awards to facilities that receive the Golden
“A” Award for 5 or more consecutive years. Within the two levels of
awards---Golden “A” and Platinum “A” Awards---eight of the nine
BSRI facilities won an award for the year 2014. Shallotte was not
eligible for a Golden “A” Award in 2014 because they changed
facilities during the year, even though they would have won an
award based on their scores, which were all over the 95% mark. So,
technically, BSRI had a “clean sweep” (another pun) with ALL 9
facilities meeting the minimum grade requirements of the award. In
fact, Shallotte would have been in line for the Platinum—5
consecutive years of Golden “A” Awards—had they not changed
facilities in mid year.
President/CEO Jim Fish said, “BSRI is honored by the receipt of 8 Golden “A” Awards for 2014 from the Brunswick County Health Department. I am
extremely proud of our nutrition staff for making our facilities some of the cleanest most sanitary eateries in the county and the state. To be able
to consistently be that good, we have to have dedicated, conscientious, dependable, skilled people able to provide a high standard of quality at
our eating facilities. We have demonstrated through receiving these awards that we have what it takes. We are especially proud that four of our
facilities received the Platinum Golden “A” Award signifying that they have received a Golden “A” Award for five consecutive years or more. This
is a major achievement for our organization and for any organization.”
For 2014, The following BSRI sites received the Platinum “A” Award: Boiling Spring Lakes Senior Nutrition Site, Calabash Senior Nutrition Site,
Leland Senior Center, and the Southport Senior Center.
Receiving Golden “A” Awards for 2014 were: Ash Senior Nutrition Site, Oak Island Senior Nutrition Site, Sunset Harbor Senior Nutrition Site, and
Supply Senior Nutrition Site.

May 2015
I would like to begin this month’s newsletter with a special thanks to the seniors at the
Supply Senior Site. County Commissioners voted last fall to divest management of the
Lockwood Folly Community Building effective January 1, 2015 to Brunswick Senior
Resources Inc. Since the announcement that the Lockwood Folly Community Building
would become a location for a future full service senior center; the participants have
actively taken ownership over the many tasks necessary to prepare a site for growth. In addition to recruiting
new participants, they have given of their personal time to clean up the grounds and interior of the building
and create lists of things that the center will need to be successful. Recently the seniors organized a yard sale
and have donated the proceeds to the building fund for the future center. Through their hard work they were
able to raise over $850.00! We are thankful for their efforts and appreciate the spirit of teamwork and
collaboration as we all work to bring a new center to that location.
As of the April 9th, 2015 County Commissioner held county budget and planning meetings. The expansion of
the Supply Senior Site is not included in the 2016 Fiscal Year. A county capital improvement plan (CIP)
anticipates allocating funding
for expansion between the
Fiscal Years of 2017 to 2020.
The current location has two
structures which comprise
roughly 4,000 square feet of
space. An additional 6,000
square feet would need to be
added to provide the space
necessary for programs and
services. BSRI intends to
proceed with getting estimates
for construction and site
planning in an effort be
prepared when funding
becomes available.
May also represents the two year anniversary of the opening of the Sunset Harbor Senior Site. If you have not
had the chance to visit that location, I would encourage you to do so and enjoy lunch on the exterior deck and
watch the boats cruise up and down the inter-coastal waterway.
NEWS & ANNOUCEMENTS from the Organization
The pre-qualification process for selecting a builder for the New Leland Senior Center closed at the conclusion
of the month of April. Several builders met pre-qualification criteria and county officials are expecting multiple
bids for the construction contract. The robust interest is a good sign that the project will remain on schedule
with a possible ground breaking scheduled for fall. A special thanks to county Director of Engineering, William
Pinnix, who has been so diligent keeping this important project moving on the right course. The next step will
be a series of approval meetings with Town of Leland and County officials for clarifications on building plans.

BSRI Provides Estate Planning
Assistance Have you considered including BSRI in your Estate Plan???
There are assets you own that will automatically transfer to your
heirs. And… you can also designate a portion of your assets to
keep on giving for years to come by naming Brunswick Senior
Resources, Inc. (BSRI) in your Estate Planning.
Have you designated beneficiaries for your accounts? How is
your property held? Even if you don’t have a will, it’s important
to be able to answer these questions. It is easy to designate
beneficiaries for retirement assets, investments and life
insurance. You can also add a beneficiary to a deed for land or a
home that you own.
You can take some small steps today to ensure a gift goes to help
seniors who wish to remain healthy in their own homes for as
long as possible:
• Name BSRI as a beneficiary for your retirement plan assets
and life insurance.
• Designate Pay on Death or Transfer on Death to BSRI for
your investments, checking or savings accounts.
• Review and update your real estate and vehicle titles to
include BSRI.
• You can also designate multiple beneficiaries, taking care
of your family & the causes most important to you.
Contact BSRI today! (910) 754-2300 to learn more about this
charitable gift and estate planning strategy and how you could
personally benefit.

Older adults are a vital part of our society. Since 1963, communities across
the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans
Month each May. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Get into the
Act,” to focus on how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting
engaged in their
communities, and making a
positive impact in the lives
of others.
The theme also reflects on
the 50th anniversary of the
Older Americans Act.
President Lyndon B.
Johnson signed the Older
Americans Act into law in
July 1965. Since that time,
the Act has provided a
nationwide aging services
network and funding that
helps older adults live with
dignity in the communities
of their choice for as long
as possible. These services
include home-delivered
and congregate meals, caregiver support, community-based assistance,
preventive health services, elder abuse prevention, and much more.
By promoting and engaging in activity, wellness, and inclusivity, more
Americans than ever before can “Get into the Act.” While BSRI provides
services to promote the well being & enhance the quality of life of older
adults year-round, Older Americans Month offers an opportunity to
emphasize how older adults can access the home- and community-based
services they need to live independently in their communities. It is also an
occasion to highlight how older adults are engaging with and making a
difference in those communities.
Discover Older Americans Month, visit:

Get Into the Act Here at BSRI…
...by supporting the re authorization of the Older Americans Act. This Act pro-vides funding to BSRI for its services, pro-grams, and senior center operations.
Drop by one of the three senior centers' computer labs, Wednesday, May 13. There you can complete an electronic letter to congress urging their support for the Act.
Don't have time to drop by our center? You can complete the form at:
https://secure3.convio.net/ncoa/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=301 or visit the National Council on Aging's Web-site: www.ncoa.org and click "Take Action" under "Get In-volved."
BSRI's Senior Centers are in the process of becoming certified senior centers of excellence so we cordially request you forward a copy of the letter to your local directors email address so the center re-ceives credit:

Can it! If you’re thinking about “putting food
up” this summer by canning, this is a
great time to learn or get a “refresher”
on your skills. The key is to make sure
that you do it safely. There is no sense
in spending the time, money, energy and
good produce and then lose the product
or make someone sick.
The NC Cooperative Extension in Bruns-
wick County is offering a basic Can It!
Class, taught by Cheryle Jones Syracuse,
Thursday June 25 from 12:45 p.m. until
2: 15 p.m. This class will update poten-
tial canners with the latest safe meth-
ods. The class will also discuss myths
and misconceptions of canning and the
basics of boiling water bath canning as
well as pressure canning. The important
question of when is a pressure canner
needed will be answered.
The registration fee is $5 per person,
payable at class. This will include all in-
struction and up-to-date recipes. Space
is limited, please RSVP

Medicare has 5 things you can do to help you become an informed Medicare consumer:
1. Know your rights. As a person with Medicare, you have certain rights and protections designed to help protect you and make sure you get
the health care services the law says you can get.
2. Protect your identity. Identity theft happens when someone uses your personal information without your consent to commit fraud or other
crimes. Keep the following personal information safe:
Your name
Your Social Security Number (SSN)
Your Medicare number (or your membership card if you’re in a Medicare Advantage or other Medicare health plan)
Your credit card and bank account numbers
Get more information on how to protect yourself from identity theft.
3. Help fight Medicare fraud. Medicare fraud takes money from the Medicare program each year, which means higher health care costs for
you. Learn how to report fraud.
4. Get involved with other seniors with the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP). The SMP educates and empowers people with Medicare to take an
active role in detecting and preventing health care fraud and abuse.
5. Make informed Medicare choices. Each year during the fall Open Enrollment Period (October 15–December 7), review your plan to make
sure it’s going to meet your needs for the following year. If you’re not satisfied with your current plan, you can switch during the Open Enroll-
ment Period. ***Above information obtained from the Medicare Blog; www.medicare.gov.
Also, check out videos for tips on preventing Medicare fraud and see how seniors are learning tostop, spot, and report fraud.

1980s as a way to generate more interest and tourism to the Cape Fear River waterfront regions of Wilmington's historic Downtown, to-
day the Riverwalk encompasses a full mile of scenic boardwalk, hugging the borders of the riverfront, and providing visitors with endless
views and easy access to some of the Downtown's most beloved attractions. Wilmington staples like The Cotton Exchange, theUSS
North Carolina Battleship, and the 1914 Murchison Building are all located along the route, although visitors may be hard pressed to

MAY 2015 25 BSRI SENIOR BUZZ IN MEMORIAM
By Syndi Ward
Two of our most dedicated volunteers serving in our Leland community are
Beverly Reed and Jan Nance. Beverly has been volunteering with BSRI for 4+ years
and Jan came to join her 2+ years ago. They work as a team in our MOW program
that delivers meals to our homebound recipients. They volunteer two days a week,
but they also let us know and encourage us to call on them in the event that we need
an extra hand. These two ladies go above and beyond their call of duty to lend a helping hand
where there may be a need.
Beverly has been the wife of Don Reed, who also takes part as a volunteer in the event that
Jan can’t make it or when weather is not suitable, for nearly 45 years. They had two children
but raised seven, as they took in pregnant girls that were facing tough situations. They also
have four grandchildren. Beverly has taken various jobs throughout her adult life, always
where there was an immediate need, and it never mattered to her how traumatic these
positions could be. If she could be of any help to someone that needed it, that’s what she
did… including homeschooling and putting together support groups.
Jan is the mother of three and the grandmother of five. She has a degree in horticulture,
which she earned from Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Jan still
puts this talent to work today by helping people in their yards and dedicating time in
beautifying the community. Jan volunteers a lot of her time wherever there may be a need. She is currently a volunteer with the WARM program
that helps to repair or rebuild homes for those that could not otherwise get the work done due to financial burden.
These two women are amazing with the amount of heart they put into helping those around the community. Their hearts are sincere and they
have a genuine love for all people that they come into contact with. Beverly and Jan are both active members of the North Brunswick Fellowship
church, where they also dedicate a lot of their time to various jobs in the church, as well as outside with different projects that of course benefit
others in the community. I could never put into words how much we appreciate you two and your generosity. We thank you so much, for all that
you do and for being who you are.
