Bal$more City EV-‐ready Transit Hubs and Smart Street Light (B’Smart) Project NIST Global Ci$es Team Challenge 2016
22-‐23 March 2016 (Image courtesy Bal9more Parking)
B’Smart Project Focus
• EV-‐ready Smart Transit Hubs for Bal9more • Define Smart Transit Hub, transi9on current transit sta9ons to transit hubs, star9ng with West Bal9more pilot
• Hubs are more than transit. Hubs are community wi-‐fi enabled spaces to promote local ar9sts, entrepreneurs, and musicians
• Hubs as microgrids for energy independence and high-‐speed internet access; EV-‐ready, mul9-‐modal (car, bike and ride share)
• Safe greenway connec9ons from hub to hub using non-‐stop bus rapid transit (BRT) or overhead rail
• Smart Street Lights at and to/from Hubs = founda$on for intelligent city (IT + transporta$on + clean energy + engaged ci$zen)
Key B’Smart Performance Indicators for 2016-‐17 West Bal$more pilot
ü Purpose and Plan: Improve Bal$more transit with Smart Transit Hub plan ü Define pilot Smart Street Light system to operate within a Smart Community Transit
Hub plan to improve transporta9on, coordina9on of transporta9on amongst diverse stakeholders and expense, par9cularly for low-‐income riders
ü Iden9fy and develop coali9on of stakeholders ü Develop smart street light specifica9ons for pilot ü Install pilot smart street light assets ü Measure outcomes and impact of smart street light pilot
ü Impact and Performance Measures of B’Smart Project ü Rider percep9ons of transit experience ü Rider and non-‐rider percep9ons of City mobility ü Percep9ons and reality of crime and transit safety (detec9on, preven9on and
management) ü Last-‐mile connec9ons to-‐from pilot transit hub sites ü On-‐9me performance of transit opera9ng around pilot Hubs ü Ridership (up or down) ü Single-‐Occupancy Vehicle use and city traffic conges9on around Hubs ü Cycling and pedestrian experience to/from/around pilot transit Hubs
