BROOKFIELD – There are bigchanges going on at Brookfield VillageHall, as the project to remodel businessoffices and the customer service area

reaches beyond the halfway point. With the newly designed open work

environment comes the need for morefurniture, and to that end, the VillageBoard approved an expenditure of$44,124 when it met Jan. 28 to low bid-der Midwest Office Interiors.

The package includes furnishingsfor cubicles, a new staff conferenceroom, an additional office and the re-placement of the pew-like seating inthe Council Chambers with 100 stack-able chairs. Two bathrooms are beingremodeled and a separate informationtechnology room is all part of the plans.

Village Manager Kieth Sbirral ex-plained the building, built in 1974, wasdesigned with offices for a main framecomputer, and in many ways is out oftouchwith today’s needs. The improve-ments will reflect the needs of today.

“The [Brookfield] Village Hall willbe a one-stop shop,” Sbirral said. “Mosteverything is on track and we hope tohave a grand opening in March. We’rereally in a great place now.”

Finance Director Doug Coopersaid the original contract price was$157,200 for the improvements. How-ever, change orders in that contract, specifically for additional work withinthe Council Chambers, will result inadded costs.

3Riverside native shares local stories via podcastBy JOE SINOPOLI

[email protected]

RIVERSIDE – There’s nothing un-usual about a young man who wants tokick the dust off his boots and leave hiscrummy old town behind.

Kieran Brennan, then, may becalled unusual.

At age 23, Brennan decided to chron-icle his life in Riverside; a place he re-ally loves, and the things that he holdstruest in his heart.

Brennan has undertaken an effortto record a series of podcasts titled,“Riverside, Born and Raised,” eachfeaturing a place where good memo-ries were made. To date, Brennan hasmade a podcast on School District 96,St. Mary’s School, The Riverside SwimClub and has created a monologue aswell.

“It’s kind of a fun little idea I’vehad for a while,” he said. “I’ve got alot of cool stories that I think shouldbe shared. I’m not trying to profit fromthem, I’m just putting them out thereto exist.”

Brennan said he started putting to-gether the series and began taping inSeptember.

“I was a little more consistent in thefall,” he said. “There’s no rhyme norreason to releasing them, every oncein a while I’ll put an episode together. It’s pretty organic and pretty free-flow-ing,”

Each episode varies in length, any-where from 15 to 30 minutes long. Ba-sically, each is a one-man show, withBrennan being the man. There may bea special guest at times, but many arejust from Brennan’s point of view.

“I enjoy the episodes most when Ihave a special guest with me,” he said.

Brennan then edits the taping andputs it all together before publishingthe podcast on YouTube.

So far, he has gotten a pretty goodresponse, he said.

“A lot of my immediate friendscan really identify with the stories,”he said. “Some kids kind of joke that Ihave a super-human memory.”

When Brennan thinks about days

past, he said he thinks about all theopportunities he and his friends hadas kids, growing up in the classrooms, purposely kept small, with great teach-ers.

“I rode my bike to school and theball park,” Brennan said. “There wasalso Little League, basketball camps.

All the parents are super invested withthe kids here. Everyone kind of looksout for one another. Friends know howfortunate they are. I do have a numberof friends who are grateful for growingup here.”

Brennan is a graduate of the Uni-versity of Illinois Champaign with a

Bachelor of Science in supply chainmanagement and marketing and a mi-nor in Spanish.

He is enrolled in the Institute forIntegrative Nutrition’s health coach-ing certification program. He plans todevelop an accountability health prac-tice.

Dan and Brenna Velcich are transforming the former Toscanino space in Brookfield in the hope ofopening their Burger Antics restaurant by March.

Here’s hoping big things are in store for Burger Antics, the new

restaurant set to open in March at 3740 Grand Blvd., the former

Toscanino’s Italian Market. Owners Dan and Brenna Velcich

plan to offer artisanal burgers, beer and liquor and intend to in-

clude a display space for local artists. Best of luck!

SOUND OFFPensioners bewareIllinois public pensioners beware. Withthe increasingly massive amount of state ofIllinois dollars devoted to public pensions, soon nothing will be left to cover other es-sential services: social needs, public safetyneeds, highway needs, school needs, etc. Inorder for politicians to get re-elected, theyhave consistently granted funds they didnot have to pensions. They shouldn’t havedone it, but they did. The choice seemsto be for those on public pensions to halttheir obsession with “you promised us” andmake someminor modifications or facedrastic measures (like Detroit) and end upwith far less in the long run. Among thealternatives that will be far more costly toeveryone, including pensioners, are state ofIllinois income tax increases, reorganizationthrough bankruptcies or drastic cuts inessential services.

College of DuPage board burnAs if the COD board approving [Robert]Breuder’s buyout by a vote of 6-1 for thesecond time wasn’t enough, there at thebottom of the … page was an ad for theWaterleaf restaurant at COD, which isrunning in the red. Can we spell fiasco?

COD fails taxpayersAs a member of this community, taxpayer and concerned citizen, I am hor-rified at the way six [College of DuPage]trustees have conducted themselves. Itmakes me wonder … what “benefits” theywere granted (by President Breuder) toaward the outrageous payout to him. I’vespoken to some friends about the messand they seem to feel that they are help-less to “do anything to change it,” so whyget upset? In a way I can understand that;however, if we all sit back and do nothing, issues such as this will continue to go“unchecked” and our taxes will continueto increase because nobody is objecting.... There must be something that canbe done to stop the outrageous payoutto Breuder and also stop his name frombeing plastered across a building. That isa slap in the face to this community!

Blame Glen Ellyn for COD fiascoSo the Breuder buyout outrages the GlenEllyn community? How very interesting, particularly since our Board of Trusteesare elected by the same community. ... Weknew exactly what the great majority ofthese people were all about when we putthem in their board seats. And nowwe’reoutraged? ... The community has exactlythe COD Board of Trustees it wanted, andnow the community is getting exactly whatit deserves from it’s COD Board of Trustees.

Glen Ellyn residents need to end their knee-jerk conservatism and automatic dismissalof concerns of the faculty, pay attention towho is seeking board of trustee seats andwhomay be receiving their vote.

Name for COD buildingShould there be any other namesake tothe COD Homeland Security EducationCenter? Considering the less-than-hon-orable shenanigans of the COD trusteesand the controversy surrounding thelucrative buyout of Robert Breuder, I askthe COD trustees to please do somethinghonorable and name the COD HomelandSecurity Education Center after Sgt. Rob-ert Miller, a [Medal of Honor] recipientand native of Glen Ellyn who was killedwhile fighting for the very freedomsyou have as you make such importantseverance package decisions of yourless-than-honorable president!

Lemont parking problemI’m a resident of Lemont, just west ofState Street and the apartments in the 900block of State Street. It’s an older, narrowerstreet and we’ve had problems with park-ing the past two years, sometimes up to 10cars lining both sides, limiting access forschool buses, snowplows, fire trucks, etc. There’s not enough parking by the apart-ments. … and there’s two to three familiesin some of the buildings. … They could usePeiffer Street. It’s newer and wider, andthey could put up no parking signs within100 feet of the stop signs at Peiffer andSinger or parking for residents of Singeronly signs. Maybe that’s a solution. I hopethe village takes notice and action.

Lost opportunityAs a long-time registered voter in

Lemont, I again regret not having theopportunity to choose between old andnew candidates for our village board.Lemont needed candidates with fresh, new ideas to help shape its future. Whata lost opportunity.

Pay up, Elmhurst residentsI’d like to know why Elmhurst is not

enforcing the ordinance for peopleshoveling their sidewalks. I know othercommunities in the area, including Chi-cago, are enforcing this, and I know thatElmhurst enforces the maintaining yourparkway in the summer; when you don’tmow it, they issue tickets. If nothing else, this would be a revenue enhancementopportunity, so I would just like to seethat enforced, and if people don’t want tobe good citizens, then maybe they shouldhave to pay up.

Woodridge streetsWoodridge streets during this past

snowstorm and probably two to threedays after were the unsafest streets in

DuPage County. I travel quite a bit andsee a lot of streets, and the streets [inWoodridge] were just a mess and veryunsafe for pedestrians and vehicles.

Westmont board needs towake up and listen to residentsWestmont School District 201 – here

we go again. The taxpayers of Westmonthave spoken twice and voted down aproposed referendum, yet the boardkeeps bringing it to the people. Not surewhy this is coming to dead ears, but theboard needs to wake up and listen to thepeople of Westmont.

Voters have spokenMore than 3,000 [Downers Grove]

voters signed the petition to place thereferendum on the ballot to advise thecouncil that they are for or against thevillage hall [and] police department andrelocating the fire station to the Ogdenand Lee site for the election. The villagecould have put this referendum questionon the ballot with the stroke of the penbut did not want to sample the public orgovern by referendum, to quote some ofthe commissioners. I believe the votersof Downers Grove have sent the councila strong message that they want to beheard.

Rauner unveils broad agendain the State of State address

By KEVIN P. [email protected]

Republican Gov. BruceRauner in his first State of theState address laid out a broadagenda to revitalize Illinois’economy that focuses signifi-cantly on stripping the powerand influence of labor unions.

Rauner in his 40-minutespeech to state lawmakersFeb. 4 called his proposals“bold” and “aggressive” but“necessary and very doable”to repair the state’s deep fi-nancial troubles, and make Il-linois more competitive withother states.

“The time is now for allof us, Republicans and Dem-ocrats, to do big things – theright things – for the people ofour great state. Now is the timefor bold and decisive action. Itis make or break time for theLand of Lincoln,” Rauner said.

ButwhileRauner preachedthe need for bipartisan coop-eration to stop what he repeat-edly called on the campaigntrail the state’s downward spi-ral, he almost certainly willfind a number of his propos-als, especially those bluntingorganized labor, a very hardsell to Democratic lawmakerswhom hold House and Senatesupermajorities.

He outlined some of hisproposals in his address, and

others in an accompanyinglist of priorities he called “TheIllinois Turnaround.” He toldlawmakers they should con-sider the plan as a whole rath-er than a list of separate ini-tiatives, and that while theywould find things they don’tlike, they will find a numberof things they do.

Among his top prioritiesfor economic growth are im-plementing more significantworkers’compensationreform, tort reform, implementing truecompetitive bidding for publicworks projects while limitingprevailing wage requirements, and allowing local voters to de-cide by referendum whether ornot local government employ-ees should be forced to join aunion or pay dues as a condi-tion of employment – Raunerdubbed the localized right-to-work areas “employee empow-erment zones.”

“Employee empowermentzones will increase jobs forresidents, increase economicactivity for local businessesand generate more tax dollarsfor local governments. It’s awin-win-win proposal,” Raun-er said.

Rauner also seeks to limitorganized labor’s influenceby extending the existing banon political contributions forbusinesses with state con-tracts to all organizations

with a collective bargainingagreement with state govern-ment, and organizations fund-ed by entities receiving stateMedicaid funds.

In exchange for the busi-ness reforms, Rauner said hesupports a plan to increasethe state’s minimum wagefrom $8.25 to $10 an hour, butphased in over seven years.

While Rauner in his speechdid not address the state’s $111billion unfunded pension lia-bility – a 2013 reform bill isawaiting an Illinois SupremeCourt ruling regarding its con-stitutionality – his prioritieslist includedaproposal tomovestate employees into a new tierof benefits or into 401(k)s whileprotecting the pension benefitsthey have accumulated to date.Another proposal seeks to givestate government employeesmerit-based raises.

A number of Rauner’s pro-posals are aimed at the locallevel, such as lowering theproperty tax burden on Illi-nois homeowners. Besides theright-to-work and prevailingwage reforms that he said willdecrease local government’scosts, he wants a two-yearfreeze on property taxes andan increased emphasis on con-solidating local units of gov-ernment – Illinois at almost

7,000 has far more than any other state.“Our property taxes are out of con-

trol and are crushing middle-class fam-ilies. Illinois’ high property taxes haveskyrocketed because state and localgovernments have been unable or un-willing to control their own spending. We must empower taxpayers to takecontrol of their property tax bills by giv-ing them greater ability to control localgovernment spending,” Rauner said.

Rauner also echoed previous callsfor constitutional amendments forterm limits and merging the offices oftreasurer and comptroller.

Lawmakers will meet again in twoweeks when Rauner delivers his pro-posed 2016 budget, which will give amore complete picture as to how heplans to pay for initiatives such as in-creased funding for K-12 education, andat the same time what needs to be cut.Besides a multi-billion-dollar backlog ofunpaid bills, the state faces a $6 billionbudget shortfall for the next fiscal yearbeginning July 1.Amuch-criticized 2011increase in the state income tax was al-lowed to expire Jan. 1 as promised.

While Rauner said he wants to keepincome taxes “lowand competitivewithother states” and keep the state’s flattax over a progressive one based on in-come, he wants to extend the state salestax to include a number of services. Helikelywill find pushback frommembersof his own Republican caucus, some ofwhom oppose any attempt to find morerevenue over cutting spending.

Local lawmakers reactRauner’s speech earned high praise

from local Republican legislators andeven received positive words from theother side of the aisle.

Illinois Senate Republican LeaderChristine Radogno, R-Lemont, saidshe’s encouraged by Rauner’s earlysigns of bipartisan leadership.

“It’s exciting to have a governorwho wants to work with lawmakers onlong-term solutions to the state’s prob-lems,” she said.

Radogno is particularly intriguedby the governor’s plan to freeze prop-erty taxes.

“As a suburban resident, I knowmany property owners will share myinterest in his plan to provide propertytax relief. Gov. Rauner cited propertytax rates as ‘one of the biggest imped-iments to growth,’ explaining the av-erage property tax rate has increasednearly 33 percent over the past decade.”

State Sen. Michael Connelly,R-Lisle, believes Illinois is now on apath to re-emerging as the “economicengine of the Midwest.”

“Clearly Gov. Rauner was elected tomake bold moves and take swift actionto put Illinois back on the path to fiscalsolvency and get our state’s economygoing again,” Connelly said.

Rauner’s commitment to govern-ment consolidation tapped into amajortalking point for many local officials.State Rep. Ron Sandack, R-DownersGrove, hopes the state can mirror thesuccess witnessed in DuPage County.

“The DuPage County model hasachieved an estimated $100 million intaxpayer savings,” Sandack said, “andI hope to see that effort extended state-wide so that taxpayers everywhere canexperience tax relief.”

State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, said she was “especially encouraged”by the governor’s pledge to consolidateunits of government after shewaspart ofthe bipartisan effort in DuPage County.

Conroy also agreed with Rauner’sfocus on the state’s fiscal crisis. Shesaid she’s committed to working withRepublicans to pass a “fiscally respon-sible budget while preserving fundingfor education and other vital services.”

“I look forward to hearing the spe-cifics of Gov. Rauner’s plan and willcontinue to work with my colleaguesin the House and Gov. Rauner to findbalanced solutions to our state’s fiscalproblems,” Conroy said.

BROOKFIELD – Directlyacross from the Metra railcrossing, on the corner ofGrand Boulevard and Brook-field Avenue, sits 1-year-oldFuego, a quaint respite fromthe everyday. In a cleverlydesigned building, the tradi-tionally decorated Fuego is acantina in the truest sense, ahandy place to stop for a mar-garita or a cold beer and sometasty Mexican classics.

My friend and I grabbeda small table by one of theexpansive windows in the re-laxed space accented by stone.

We began our meal with abasket of light and salty chipsand salsa, and an order of theCeviche de Fuego, a chilledblend of chopped shrimp, tomatoes, onions, peppers, cilantro and lime – lots oflime. Elegantly served in a tallmartini glass, the seafood dishwas a refreshing and tastystart to our experience.

I opted for the carnitadinner, featuring slow-roastedpork sauteed with onions tocreate some oh-so-yummycaramelized edges. It’s like theMexican answer to a classicpulled pork, with complex sea-sonings and just enough bite.

My friend ordered the chilirelleno dinner, a fresh pobla-no pepper filled with Mexicancheeses. It was enclosed in aflaky crust, similar to a puffpastry, baked to a goldenbrown.

But the real star was thehomemade ranchero sauce.Smoky and rich, this blend oftomatoes, peppers and herbsis cooked a long time – until itturns thick, deep red and deli-cious. (The chef really shouldbottle the sauce and sell it atthe bar.)

And although we werestuffed, the dessert menu wascalling, so we ordered thechurro bites. They were deca-dent and sweet, fried crisp andcovered in a syrupy cinnamonsugar, with warm chocolatesauce for dipping.

A variety of classic Mex-ican favorites, from tacos toflautas, rounds out the menuat Fuego. Quench your thirst

with a margarita, house-madesangria or one of many greatlocal craft beers at the fullbar.

Letting Fuego live up to itsname – the Spanish word forfire – you can warm up thiswinter with homemade soupsor try the chili prepared with

both beef and chorizo. Theonline menu also highlightslunch specials.

The service was friend-ly and personable, and therestaurant’s location juststeps from the train shouldserve it well. When warmweather finally returns, patio

seating will beckon commut-ers and lovers of Mexicanfood to outdoor tables for arelaxing afternoon or eve-ning.

RB’s Bloom battles through injuriesBy DAN SANTAROMITA

[email protected]

RIVERSIDE – Playingthrough injuries is nevereasy, but for Samantha Bloom, the alternative of sitting outgames is even worse.

Bloom is piling up a list ofnagging injuries this season, which have bothered, but notstopped, Riverside Brook-field’s standout sophomoreguard.

Starting in the summer, shenoticed back pain, occasionalcramps and a lack of feeling inher toes. So far, Bloom doesn’tknow what’s wrong on thatfront.

“We don’t really knowwhat’s going on with myback,” Bloom said. “I can’treally move my toes or mylegs sometimes. After gamesor during games I cramp up.I’ve had a lot of MRIs, I’ve beento a lot of doctors and no oneknows what’s wrong.”

As if that wasn’t badenough, she broke her noseduring a Jan. 23 game at ICCatholic. She is wearing amask, a la Richard Hamilton,to protect her nose while it setsback into place.

“I really don’t like it at all,but I’m learning to play withit,” Bloom said. “It’s hard tosee my feet. It’s still crooked. It’s still not completely set so I[had] to wear it the rest of theconference games and I get todecide for regionals. I’m think-ing maybe.”

Have these injuries both-ered Bloom’s play? It’s pos-sible, but her stats remainstrong.

Bloom, armed with hermask, put up a game-high 13points in Thursday’s 56-35win against Aurora CentralCatholic and led RB againwith 21 points Saturday in a57-50 win against WheatonAcademy.

“I’ve been playing throughit,” Bloom said. “I have to. I’mused to it now.”

RB coach Dal las Ti l lwasn’t shy about compli-menting the toughness of hispoint guard.

“ S h e ’ s b e e n b a t t l i n gthrough some serious stuffthis year, it’s been rough,”Till said. “She broke her noseat IC two weeks ago in thefirst quarter and missed thatwhole game. She’s a battler,

she’s on the floor for her nextgame and got that thing bust-ed back into place. It can’t befun playing with that thingon. It’s been an adjustment, but that kid is gritty and gut-ty.”

The Bulldogs closed theregular season with a 26-4 re-cord and earned the No. 4 seedin the Whitney Young section-al.

Regional play starts Tues-day.

The road to the state finals for Class3A and 4A girls basketball teams startswith regional tournament games be-ginning Monday. Here’s the outlookfor Lyons Township, Morton, River-side Brookfield and other area teams:

FenwickClass: 4ARegional: Lyons TownshipSectional:Whitney YoungSeed: No. 10First game: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18, vs. No. 7Lyons TownshipOutlook: The Friars haven’t been up torecent standards this season but stillhave plenty of talent and remain a dan-gerous team after enduring a difficultschedule.

Seniors JessicaMackowiak and Jes-sica Moriarty and juniors Deja Cageand Kiki Sheard give the Friars plentyof scorers and outside threats, but theylack size in the interior. Fenwick’s firstplayoff opponent, Lyons Township, hasplenty of size. Earlier this season theFriars blew a double-digit lead in a 54-46 loss against LT.

Lyons TownshipClass: 4ARegional: Lyons TownshipSectional:Whitney YoungSeed: No. 7First game: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18, vs. No. 10FenwickOutlook: The Lions won the West Sub-urban Silver title outright with a 10-2conference record. LT is hoping to turnits conference success into some post-season success.

The Lions feature a deep and bal-anced team, which has provided trou-ble for a lot of teams this season. HopeMiller, Emily Pender, Erin Corriganand Claire Purcell provide the size in-

side, and guards Victoria Swift, NinaScaramella and Gaby Galassini pro-vide perimeter offense.

LT opens against Fenwick, a teamthe Lions beat 54-46 at Willowbrook’sMcDonald’s Shootout on Jan. 19. If theLions get past the rematch, a talentedTrinity team, which is the No. 2 seedin the sectional, likely awaits in a re-gional final.

MortonClass: 4ARegional:MortonSectional:Whitney YoungSeed:No. 11First game: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18, vs. No. 6Hinsdale CentralOutlook: Morton’s No. 11 seed is thebest the Mustangs have had since the2010-11 season and is also the first timesince that year that theMustangswon’thave to play in a regional quarterfinal.

Still, Morton has a tough draw in aregional semifinal. TheMustangs, whohost the regional at Morton West, takeon Hinsdale Central and prolific scorerGabrielle Rush, whom is a Princetonrecruit.

The Mustangs, who finished 6-6 inthe West Suburban Gold, are led byjunior guards Maryam Wilcher, whorecently committed to Indiana State, and Chloe Maietta.

NazarethClass: 3ARegional:NazarethSectional: OrrSeed: No. 11First game: 7:30 p.m. Monday vs. No. 22Golder College PrepOutlook: The Roadrunners are hopingbeing hardened by the rugged EastSuburban Catholic Conference willhelp them in the postseason. Naz hasjust one win in the ESCC and will playa regional quarterfinal to open theplayoffs.

If Naz wins its opener as regionalhost, it will take on No. 6 seed St. Fran-cis on Feb. 17.

Proviso WestClass: 4ARegional: St. IgnatiusSectional:Whitney YoungSeed:No. 9First game: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday vs. No. 8ReavisOutlook: The Panthers have finishedstronger in the West Suburban Sil-ver than they started, closing withwins against Downers Grove North,Oak Park River Forest and HinsdaleCentral to wrap up a 7-5 record in theleague. Coleanna Funches (18 points)and Myia Thomas (11) led seven play-ers whom scored in a balanced effortagainst Central.

To open the playoffs, West will takeon Reavis, which is known for its full-court pressure. If the Panthers get bythat game they likely face top sectionalseed Whitney Young.

Riverside BrookfieldClass: 4ARegional: SimeonSectional:Whitney YoungSeed:No. 4First game: 6 p.m. Tuesday vs. No. 14Oak Park-River Forest or No. 20 JuarezOutlook: The Bulldogs have for the

most part overcome the loss of seniorforward Janae Dabney, whom wasthe team’s leading rebounder whenshe tore her ACL in December. Sincethen, RB has gone 10-2, including a winagainst neighboring Lyons Township.

Sophomores Samantha Bloom,Lyndsey Hoyd and Dana Rettke havetakenupbiggerroles sinceDabneywentdown. Bloom runs the offense at pointguard, Hoyd is a deadly outside shooterand Rettke uses her 6-foot-7 frame to geteasy baskets inside and prevent oppo-nents from doing the same.

TheNo. 4 seed is the best RB has hadsince moving up to Class 4A. With awin in the regional semifinal, the Bull-dogs could play a possible rematch oflast year’s regional final against Ken-wood, which they lost 69-55.

St. JosephClass: 3ARegional: St. JosephSectional: OrrSeed:No. 5First game: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18, vs. No. 12Lemont or No. 21 Rauner PrepOutlook: The Chargers are likely to faceNo. 12 seed Lemont in a regional semi-final. If St. Joseph gets past that game,a meeting with No. 4 Glenbard Southfigures to be next. The Raiders won theMetro Suburban West with an unde-feated record.
