Lean Six Sigma Standards

• ISO13053 Part 1 Quantitative methods in process improvement – Six Sigma – DMAIC Methodology

• ISO13053 Part 2 Quantitative methods in process improvement – Six Sigma – Tools and Techniques

• ISO17258 Statistical methods – Six Sigma – Basic criteria underlying benchmarking for Six Sigma in organisations

• ISO18404 Quantitative methods in process improvement – Six Sigma – Competencies for key personnel and their organizations in relation to Six Sigma and Lean implementation

ISO18404 was released in late 2015 and BSI’s courses are currently being refined in order

to ensure that all individuals who attend can develop competences to allow them to

become certified in accordance with this standard.

Typical Lean Six Sigma Programme Objectives (1)

• Engage the Leadership Team in having a clear understanding of what Lean Six Sigma is and how they can support and use the programme to deliver the organisations business needs, strategy and goals

• Engage Middle Management in having an understanding of Lean Six Sigma (incl. project selection, DMAIC and design roadmaps & tools) and how they can act as Project Sponsors and support improvement work in their own areas as Process Owners

• Develop Project Managers (Green Belts, Black Belts) across any required business area, e.g., (Manufacturing, Design and Transactional) in order to deliver improvement projects and such that the individuals become qualified and competent as Lean Six Sigma professionals

Lean Six Sigma Roles• Lean Six Sigma Leader – senior strategic level oversight, leadership and advocacy, programme

steering group (senior level part time role).• Lean Six Sigma Champion / Sponsor / Process Owner – middle management tactical level

oversight, project and belt selection and sponsorship, support and review, process ownership and change management (senior to mid-level part time role).

• Master Black Belt – programme and scorecard management, technical innovation, coaching and teaching across the organization, leadership of macro-projects (senior to mid-level full time role).

• Black Belt – project leadership, delivery of improvements and ROI, coaching and teaching of Green/Yellow Belts (mid-level predominantly full time role).

• Green Belt – project leadership, delivery of improvements and ROI, coaching and teaching of Yellow Belts (junior to mid-level part time role).

• Yellow Belt – project team member or leader of small improvement activities, support of Black/Green Belt projects, use of tools in daily work (junior level part time role).

• White Belt – project team member or interested stakeholder, contribute to programme where necessary (junior level part time role).

The levels in some cases refer to seniority within the organisation, but with exceptions. For example, a manager could undertake Green or Yellow Belt training becoming certified at that level. Levels also

illustrate seniority within the Lean Six Sigma structure.

Development of Competence

• Instructor Led Training: Scheduled on site group training sessions facilitated by an expert instructor for up to 12 people. Hard copy manuals and electronic templates provided as applicable. Remote telephone, e-mail and on-site support available post training (see below).

• e-Learning Options: Potential licensing opportunity to provide on-going availability of more basic level courses via an organisations own e-learning portal.

• Executive Coaching: Programme, change and leadership coaching of Senior and Middle Managers including Master Black Belts.

• Individual Contributor Coaching: Technical reviews, coaching and support for Black Belt and Green Belt Project Leaders. Black Belt (5 x 4 hour sessions), Green Belt (3 x 4 hour sessions) recommended.

• Telephone and e-Mail Support: Available to all Master, Black and Green Belt Project Leaders for 6 months post their training waves.

Assessment of Competence

• Certification: Based on the demonstration of appropriate knowledge and competencies associated with the level being applied for. Note this may become available with respect to ISO18404 – sector scheme currently being developed • Master Black Belt: Body of knowledge, programme management and delivery, training

and coaching at all levels• Black Belt: Body of knowledge, project management and delivery, training and

coaching at Green belt level• Green Belt: Body of knowledge, project management and delivery• Yellow Belt: Body of Knowledge, project contribution and /or team problem solving

Master Black Belt (10 Days) Plus Company Specific Development DaysSuitable for Certified Black Belts who have been selected to become Managers, Mentors, Trainers and Technical Champions of the Lean Six Sigma Programme. 

Train the Trainer (3 Days) Plus Company Specific Development DaysSuitable for Certified Black Belts who are required to teach and train others to a Green Belt standard of knowledge and skillset in Lean Six Sigma (course includes delivery practice sessions). Note attendance at Green Belt Training is required before undertaking this course (DMAIC or Design).

Notes:• Bespoke course content and materials can be developed that are specific to the organisation for any

BSI Lean Six Sigma course. • Specific content will be developed for any MBB course to ensure the course encompasses a mature

local organisational strategy. • Design GB courses are usually bespoke in order to fit with local NPI/NPD procedures and product

testing regimes.• Train the Trainer courses will be designed to fit around the delivery of an organisations own training

material where required.
