Course in Depth

What will I study?

Year 1 provides you with an overview of the componentsof the body, such as the cardiovascular and endocrinesystems, and outlines the basics of cellular genetics andbiochemistry. A wider context is provided by studying theevolutionary processes that have led to the existence ofHomo sapiens. You will start to develop your scientificresearch skills too.

Year 2 examines the causes of disease and develops amore detailed understanding of molecular processes. This is underpinned with skills in biological researchmethods and data analysis, plus extensive practical workusing equipment such as scanning electron microscopes.

The practical experience and theoretical background inYears 1 and 2 allow you to develop your own areas ofinvestigation in Year 3 culminating in your own researchproject supported by a diverse team of researchers.Modules covering subjects such as epidemiology, application of genetics and pathology will augment yourspecialist knowledge.

How will I study?

You will study via a combination of lectures, practicalwork and tutorials which are generally taught in fourhour sessions. The programme has a strong practical baseand, in addition to the taught sessions, you will beexpected to hone your practical skills using the excellentdepartmental facilities in your own time. The degree alsoinvolves a residential field course in Cyprus plus theoption of other UK based field courses.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through a mixture of coursework andexaminations tailored to suit the knowledge and skillsrequired for each module. A wide range of coursework isemployed which may include practical portfolios, projectreports, individual and group presentations.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by research-active experts in human

biology who take pride in the quality of their teaching andacademic studies. The programme team are up-to-datewith current developments in their areas of interest andfrequently share this knowledge by directly engagingstudents in their research. Visiting speakers assist in thedelivery of the programme, often providing novelapproaches to particular subjects.

The Biology department is friendly and approachable andof a size that enables us to know our students personally.
