PRACTICE HOURS RECORD

Students must complete all required practice hours i.e. 225 hours for a 6 week placement and 450 hours for a 12 week placement regardless of whether Bank Holidays fall within that period. It is your responsibility to maintain a record of your practice experience hours in each placement. Ensure that your practice mentor/manager signs this record on a daily and weekly basis. Keep this record safe. You must be able to provide evidence of your practice hours in each placement. All absence time must be paid back and documented on the Pay Back form which is signed by your practice mentor/manager. Placement experience will usually be 5 days of 7.5 hours i.e. 37.5 hours per week or 150 hours per 4 week period, unless otherwise stated from the placement office. Students are expected to work am/pm/twilight and 9 to 5 shifts which reflect the work pattern of the placement area. A meal break of ½ hour per 7.5 hour shift is not included the practice hours. Therefore students are required to be on duty for a total of 8 hours per shift. Short tea/coffee breaks are included in the practice hours. Students opting to work long days in areas where the pattern of work is long days, are entitled to a 1 hour meal break per 11 ½ hour shift, this may be taken as two ½ hour breaks or a 1 hour break at the discretion of the placement area. Meal breaks are not included in the practice hours. Therefore, students working long days will be required on duty for a total of 12 ½ hours per shift. Short tea/coffee breaks are included in the practice hours. Hours recorded on the student’s Practice Record must not exceed 11 ½ hours for a long day or 7 ½ for a regular shift. Excess hours will not be accepted. It is a European Working Time Directive that students should not work more than 48 hours in any week. Students may need to negotiate to work additional weekends and/or Bank Holidays when making up practice time. In such cases no time in lieu will be given. In order that students experience the full 24/hour cycle of care 7 day week nature of nursing care, students (in areas where 24 hour, 7 day a week care is provided) should work a minimum of 1 weekend in every 4 where possible or, a maximum of 2 weekends out of every 4.

On practice areas that have been deemed suitable for night duty, students will usually be expected to work one or two weeks of nights per 8 week practice learning opportunity i.e. 3-4 nights per week. A minimum of 3 weeks night duty must have been worked by the end of the programme i.e. 9–12 nights and a maximum of 9 weeks i.e. 27 – 36 nights. It is the students’ responsibility to ensure that night duty is evenly spread throughout the programme.

A meal break of ½ hour per 7.5 shift is not included the practice hours.
