SUSIE BURRELL Susie is one of Australia’s leading dietitians. Currently. she has a weekly column in The Sunday Telegraph as well as a column in The Daily Telegraph’s Simply Food lift out. TERESA CUTTER ‘The Healthy Chef’ is a qualified chef, and personal trainer. She has combined her knowledge of diet and exercise to specialise in developing healthy recipes that taste great and are good for you. Teresa has published recipe books 80/20 Diet, Fit Food, The Anti-Ageing cookbook, and Bite Me. She also owns her own cafe on Sydney’s northern beaches called ‘The Healthy Chef cafe’.

SELASI BERDIE Selasi has a dual degree in a bachelor of Exercise Science and Business (Sports Management). He has worked with a host of Australia’s best athletes providing sports nutrition and exercise advice. Selasi is the in-house Sports Scientist at Body Science.

Richie ‘Vas’, as he’s known, is the epitome

of a hardcore athlete. Known for being one

of Australia’s best Mixed Martial Artists

(MMA) along with being one of the bravest

big wave surfers in the world, life is pretty

extreme for this multi-talented athlete.

Here we get an insight into how Richie uses

the BSc range of supplements and

compression to keep him at peak

performance in the physically gruelling

world of MMA.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF RICHIE VAS6am: Wake up and catch an early morning wave.

7:30am: Tuck into breakfast - usually some rolled

oats with fruit along with BSc Multi-Vitamin and

9am: Get into the tough stuff with an all out strength

and conditioning session. Drink BSc K-OS V-2 on the

way to the gym.

11am: Stretch down and recover with BSc WPI or

session at an extremely high intensity to simulate

Over the last five summers, Australian television audiences have been thrilled by the dramatic world of the Bondi lifeguards - the real life heroes who patrol one of the world’s busiest and most famous beaches. Lifeguard Andrew Reid or “Reidy” as he’s more commonly known has dealt with everything from shark scares to mass rescues, resuscitations and lost children. This real life hero gives us a brief look into his daily routine.

my meals to whatever I’m training for but most of the time my lunches contain a mix of fresh ingredients that are high in protein and good carbohydrates. Today for example was Cajun Lamb Back-straps with Four Bean Salad.

7pm: Finish up my lifeguard shift and ride my bike to the pool for swim squad. We swim about 3.5km and throughout the session I’m re hydrating with BSc Fuel 02 Advanced Endurance sports drink. I’m stoked on the lemon lime flavour, tastes delicious!

8:30pm: Finally get home and I’ll take down another BSc WPI Chocolate Protein Shake but with water this time. Normally my dinners are higher in protein and lower in carbohydrates than lunch as I don’t need so much. Today was: Grilled rosemary lemon turkey with steamed vegetables.

9:30pm: I’m face down in a book snoring my little head off.

4:30am: Head off to my first job as a recycle loader. On the way I’ll knock down a healthy smoothie in the car with a bottle of water and a BSc Multi-vitamin.

7am: The truck heads off to the tip for our first load and I rip into a BSc Protein bar.

10am: Head home after our second load where I semi - hard boil 4 eggs and just have them with some sea salt.

10:30am: Hit the gym for a weights session. While there I’m sipping on a shaker of water and BSc Aminobol.

11:45am: While I’m getting ready to run down for a Lifeguard shift at Bondi, I’ll throw down a BSc WPI Chocolate Protein Shake with half skim milk and half almond milk. If you haven’t tried it do your taste buds a favour!

B+S: The last 12 months must have gone

by pretty quickly. How has life changed for

you since the world championships?

JM: I have a much bigger workload outside

of the pool in terms of media and

sponsor commitments but I must say I am

really enjoying this aspect – it helps me

break up the grind of training. My coach

Brant Best and I are working really hard to

keep all aspects of my training and

development as a swimmer as normal

as possible.

B+S: Many people don’t know you’re also

quite the academic. Tell us what you

currently do at university?

JM: I’m currently studying a degree in

Sports Business at ACPE in Sydney. I am

really interested in the business of sport

and see this as an area I would like to have

some involvement in post my swimming

career.

B+S: Your coach Brant Best believes you

have only scratched the surface of your

potential and you can go much faster.

Is this a fair assessment?

JM: I definitely agree with Brant that I can

continue to improve in all areas of my

swimming. Being only 20 and quite a late

starter in terms of full time swim training,

I think there are still bigger things to come.

The key is for me to stay healthy and

focussed on all the little things that can

help me progress in the sport.

B+S: London is only around the corner and

will be your first Olympics. What has your

preparation been like so far in the lead up

to the games?

JM: My training since the World

Championships has been very strong and

we are pleased with my progress at this

point in time. I was really happy with my

performance at the Australian

Championships and am over the moon

about achieving a long time dream of

mine, to compete at the Olympic games.

I am confident that I can get faster by the

time the Olympics rolls around as I have

made sound progress in all areas including

nutrition and supplementation which I have

worked hard on with the team at BSc.

B+S: BSc supplements have become a

recovery. Give our readers a run down of

what you currently use from the BSc sports

JM: I have worked closely with the team at

world record holder to become the new

100m freestyle world champion.

BSc caught up with their newest nutrition

ambassador to talk about his whirlwind rise

to becoming Australia’s most exciting

swimmer.

Detox soup 6-8 serves2 tsp olive oil1 medium onion, finely chopped1 leek, white part only, finely sliced and washed1/2 head of celery, chopped2 cups (500 ml) salt-reduced vegetable stock 3 cups (750 ml) water420g tin chopped tomatoes1 medium carrot, peeled and cut into 1cm cubes500g pumpkin, peeled & cut into 1cm cubes1 head of broccoli, cut into florets and steamed Gently heat the oil in a large saucepan. Add the onion, leek and celery and sauté over low heat until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the stock, water, tomatoes, carrot and pumpkin. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Top with the steamed broccoli and serve.

Top Tips for a successful detox

1. Commit to a detox for a period of 3-5 days.

2. Eliminate all caffeine from tea, coffee and

cola drinks as well as alcohol.

3. Eliminate all processed biscuits, cakes, muf-

fins, cereals and snack food.

4. Eat at least 3 cups of vegetables or salad and

2 pieces of fruit each day.

5. Snack on fresh fruit, nuts or a Body for Wom-

en High Protein / Low Carb Shake, Bar or Bites

6. Stick to lean proteins such as chicken breast

and vegetables/salad for main meals.

7. Include ½ - 1 cup of wholegrain carbohy-

drates such as oats, beans, chick peas and

sweet potato as desired.

8. Expect to feel tired and headachy for the first

couple of days before feeling revitalised by Day

3.

9. Aim to drink 2-3 litres of water each day.

More than this is not necessarily better.

10. Do not over-train during your detox – a

30 -60 minute walk each day is more than ad-

equate when you are not eating many calories.

The good news is, an effective detox can easily involve your current lifestyle, without much effort. By simply cutting out the processed foods and stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol from your diet for a few days you will feel refreshed, re-energised and lighter as your body rids itself of excessive fluid it tends to accumulate when too much salt and fatty food is eaten on a daily basis.

To start your detox, stock up on plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and then base your main meals around fruit salad, salads and plain vegetables. Add some lean protein in the form of yogurt, grilled fish or chicken or beans to your lunch and dinner and drink plenty of water or herbal tea. Ditch the biscuits, instead choosing fresh fruit or a handful of nuts and seeds. If you like, wholegrain breads, oats and brown rice could also be included as sources of high nutritional quality carbohydrates.

Another option some people like to take at the beginning of a detox is to substitute their evening meal for a plain vegetable soup. Not only is a plain vegetable soup packed full of key vitamins and minerals, the high level of potassium that is found in many vegetables helps to clear the body of salt, which is what tends to make us feel lighter at the end of the detox period.

THE PROJECT

Our aim was to develop a dynamic specialised full body compression suit suitable to a host of physical applications that are predominantly power based activities undertaken by Bobsled athletes.

Of particular focus was to improve leg drive and power over 45m whilst maximising comfort and velocity during downhill Bobsled activity. The ability to control these variables and also external factors such as reducing drag coefficient, optimising comfort and improving exercise efficiency are just a few of the reasons the Bobsled suit has proven to be successful.

THE CHALLENGES

Scott Allaway approached BSc to get Great Britain one step closer to a gold medal. Although BSc has vast experience in producing performance garments, this was the first garment that required sublimation printing to allow greater freedom of suit design from an aesthetic point of view. Secondly, this was the first full Body Suit produced by BSc with the aim to replicate BSc targeted compression design across the whole body (extremely difficult due to the multi-directional manner we currently run our fabric in to ensure the ultimate recoil, support and yarn power). The final challenge was to apply our theoretical concepts into a full working garment. Scott and all the athletes from Great Britain were extremely helpful with their feedback to ensure we could design the perfect suit from a functional and comfort point of view.

WHY WE DID IT

As leaders of innovation and technology we saw a Bobsleigh Suit as an exciting new challenge that could open up opportunities into the winter sports arena.

Suits such as these are used extensively by European countries but never with the science and technology that BSc have implemented into the Great Britain Bobsleigh suit. With the sport of Bobsleigh often being determined by split seconds any legal physical and mental advantage can be the difference between first and second. Our suit provides Great Britain a legal and scientifically proven advantage over their competitors.

RESULTS

The performance benefits of the new bobsled Body Science Skin® are well documented.

In bobsledding, starts have been traditionally an area for improvement. The UK bobsled team starts are now up there with the best in the world, due in part to the race suits and targeted compression science.

As a young man from immigrant parents living in Australia, life was far from easy for Christian Marchegiani who constantly found himself in trouble with the law.

Things came to a head when a judge offered him the choice between jail, the army, and a boxing gym. Christian took up the boxing option, and so began his amazing journey.

He went on to lose 48kg, complete a University Degree in Exercise Science, and start a revolution that would change the face of boxing for fitness in Australia.

Looking for a fresh start, he headed out to New York and worked with the YMCA who impressed him with the quality of their training and knowledge. On returning to Australia, he decided to use this experience, and so THUMP boxing evolved as a boxing gym above a garage in Sydney’s Inner West.

Disappointingly though, although the gym was popular enough, it was not a profitable business and eventually the point came when the club accountant told Christian he had no money to pay the rent, and that he needed to make some decisions.

However, instead of this being the beginning of the end, a chance phone call turned Christian’s life around: a gym in Toowoomba QLD was looking for a trainer to run a boxing training course, and Christian’s name was one of the first that appeared in their search.His receptionist took the phone call and

told Christian that this was a way for him to pay the rent. So he drove the 10 hours north with no presenting experience, manuals or indeed expectations, and turned his life around!

The course was a storming success. Christian knew that this was the birth of something special and that THUMP boxing would become an internationally recognised leading name in Boxing for Fitness training.

THUMP boxing today has five certification courses for instructors, employs numerous staff globally, and is licensed in thousands of gyms around Australia, NZ, Asia, and the UK.

Christian is also the founder of the successful a anti-bullying organisation, Underdogs, and currently works as the boxing and conditioning coach for the Sydney Swans, Australian Cricket Team, and numerous Olympic Athletes.

In 2012, he became the coach on Channel 9’s weight loss series, ‘Excess Baggage’, working with celebrities looking to lose weight and change their lives.

The majority of athletes at some stage of their career have complained about shoulder pain. BSc ambassador Sam Burgess has had his fair share of shoulder injuries; however, with so many different types of injuries it is often hard to pin point the exact reason for shoulder pain. Here we educate you to the common reasons behind shoulder pain and how to treat these injuries.

DislocationShoulder dislocations are the most common complex joint dislocations in the body. They commonly occur on the sport-ing field when an athlete falls on an out-stretched arm or from a severe blow to the humerus during a tackle in football.

Complications that can arise from a dislocation include damage to the nerves, rotator cuff tears and fractures of the humeral head and glenoid.

Scapula Weakness and InstabilityWeakness and instability of the scapula stabilisers interfere with the normal functioning of the shoulder girdle. As the demand for endurance of these stabilisers increases, control decreases, leading to a greater chance of injury.

Scapula instability and weakness are due to a number of reasons. Treatment of this problem is focused around strengthening the rotator cuff and other assisting muscles and to increase the amount of control and stability to the shoulder joint. This may require correcting movement patterns and the order in which muscles are recruited.

Shoulder TendonitisShoulder tendonitis is considered to be an inflammation of the biceps tendon and / or rotator cuff muscles. It is com-mon amongst the general public with jobs such as sitting at a desk all day typing with incorrect posture or athletes involved in sports where the arm is repeatedly required to move overhead, such as free-style in swimming, cricket and tennis.

Treatment initially comprises rest from overhead activity and anti-inflammatory medicine. A rehabilitation program can then be attempted focusing on strengthening and stretching musculature.

Rotator Cuff TearsA rotator cuff tendon can be torn when you fall on an outstretched arm, which causes the rotator cuff to be impinged between the humeral head and acromion process or the acromial spur.

Patients with a rotator tear experience significant weakness in their symptomatic arm and may be unable to move their arm away from their side. A rotator cuff tear does not heal itself and an arthroscope may be used to view the shoulder and assist the removal of any bony spurs and calcium deposits. Strengthening of the rotator cuff may begin approximately eight weeks from surgery.

Q: I’ve been told that agility training should be a key component of my rugby league training. Why is agility training so important? A: Agility training is at the core of any athlete’s endurance level. If you want to last longer, jump higher or change direction more quickly, agility is the key. Unfortunately a lot of athletes have their careers cut short due to injury. Agility training will reduce your risk of injury and ensure greater flexibility.

Q: I recently had a shoulder operation and want to get back into Rugby training. Is there any advice you could give me to help

bounce back more quickly? A: One of the problems with injury is that athletes often have to stop training to allow time for healing to take place. Consequently, lost strength and muscle mass needs to be regained prior to the return to competition. To prevent injury re-occurrence research has reported standard creatine to facilitate the regaining of muscle strength after subjects have been immobilised for two weeks (Hespel and co-workers, 2001). Basically, the results of the study indicated that when combined with a rehabilitation programme, creatine allowed the subjects to regain their strength and muscle mass at a faster rate than when a placebo (inactive substance) was ingested.

Q: I want to drop a couple of kilos, should I be doing weights?A: Resistance and general exercise activity keep our metabolism ticking over. V8 drivers are amongst the most highly conditioned athletes on earth. The Vast loading that V8 cars are capable of creating means drivers have to be extremely strong to be able to last full race distances which can be upwards of 6 hours in duration.
