That the words today were the same as yesterday did not interfere with her appreciation. As a matter of fact, for some, the dependable, familiar nature of the prayers is what they like most about them. Interestingly, for some people, the tune alone will bring a spiritual high. People who really know no Hebrew will chant Hebrew prayers with heartfelt ardor, and if you change the tune on them, they go bonkers. Just consider the uproar over “Sh’hu noteh shamayim” in our community. Some of the most vociferous proponents of the jaunty melody have no idea about the content of the prayer; it’s the melody that enters their heart. Another proof of this is the power of the Nigun, the Hasidic prayers in melody that have no words. I admit that I love certain prayer tunes. I know that Reb Shlomo Carlebach had some character flaws, but his melodies move me tremendously. BSBI’S CHAI LIGHTS

Rabbi’s Corner

I was visiting a man in a convalescent

home who said, “Rabbi, I really

admire you.” I thought something good was coming, but I was wrong.

“Day after day you can say the same

prayers and still get something out of it.” This man wasn’t praising me; he was

criticizing our liturgical system, a system that seems to prioritize Keva, the fixed

prayers, over Kavanah, spiritual depth in our worship.

opportunity will be early March to mid-April. We'll be sending a mailing in early

March with a congregational list and

directions, or you'll be able to go straight

online via the link we'll email you. We

look forward to your support for our

inaugural BSBI Pesach Project. If you'd be willing to help with the

mailings email Lisa Plavin

mailings at the very end of February and

the second week of April. Thank you.

that all donation checks are made out to

BSBI Sisterhood and marked "Knit and

Kvetch" on the memo line. They can be

left in the BSBI office for us. Would you be interested in knitting

something small? We received a request for children's mittens. And if you are pressed for time and just

want to do something really small, would

you like to make some squares? You can

knit or crochet squares, 6 inches square,

and once you have a few done, leave them

- marked ‘for Knit and Kvetch’ - at

BSBI. Once we have enough we will have

one of our members put them together and

make an afghan. Any questions, call me, Anne Fink, at

860-649-6551 or at [email protected]. Something New is Coming for Passover Sisterhood is embarking on a brand new

program through which you can send all

your friends in the congregation wishes

for a sweet and joyous Pesach. This "no

fuss, no muss" project will be replacing

our shalach manot box deliveries as the

major fundraiser for Sisterhood this year.

You'll be able to go online (don't worry,

we'll have a paper version for those who prefer it) and with a few clicks add your

name and personal wishes to a beautiful

letter which will then be sent to the

designated congregants. Your window of

Israel Study Night On Tuesday, February 9th, at 7:00 PM,

Sherry Shamash will lead us in a study

session on Israel. Sherry is Professor of

Hebrew at UCONN’s Center for Judaic Studies and Contemporary Jewish Life. She will be using information from Alan

Dershowitz’s books, The Case For Israel

and The Case For Peace. The books will

be available in Mary Cheney Library at

the reference desk, but Sherry will be

bringing handouts from the books that we

can use. All are invited, you are sure to learn

something about Israel that you did not

know. At this time, when there is so much criticism of our homeland, we all

need as much information as possible to

better answer the critics. Knit & Kvetch

Tuesday, February 9th

If you knit or crochet and would like to

help us out, please join us the second

Tuesday of the month in the library at the

Temple at 1:30 pm or feel free to work at

home. This month we will meet on

February 9th. We need everyone's help to

continue our good works. Remember we can always use yarn or monetary

donations to continue our mitzvah. It

doesn't have to be a huge amount: $5.00

goes a long way towards buying yarn. We

do appreciate all donations of yarn,

however please no wool. Our items need

to be machine washable so we can only

accept 100% acrylic. We wouldn’t want

to have to curtail the amount of items that

we donate to the various nursing homes,

shelters and schools. Please make sure

the Nazis. Chief among

those items is the Gustav

What’s Shabbat without bagels, lox

and the men of the BSBI

Brotherhood? Between family and travel, my wife and I

have had the pleasure of spending

Shabbat at dozens of synagogues. In

some ways, this variety has allowed us to

appreciate our spiritual home that much

more. One of the aspects of BSBI that

makes us particularly proud is the level

of congregant participation in nearly

every service. On February 6

th, the Brotherhood shows

off its talents leading Shabbat services. If you haven’t been to Shabbat services in a

while, this would be a great Saturday to

come. In addition to a spirited service,

we sponsor a nice kiddush luncheon. Get ready for the Super Bowl with the

World Wide Wrap. February 7

th marks Super Bowl 50! It

also marks an annual event called the

World Wide Wrap. BSBI Brotherhood

joins the Federation of Jewish Men’s

Clubs groups throughout the world for a

minyan that Sunday morning to observe the mitzvah of laying tefillin. All are

welcome to join us at 9:00 a.m. for this

service. Tefillin will be provided for

those who need them. If you’re like me

and haven’t regularly donned your

tefillin, don’t worry. We will have plenty

of help around to “refresh our memory.”

After the morning service, we’ll enjoy a

breakfast. Speaking About Islam Terrorism, the Syrian refuge crisis and comments by certain presidential

candidates, have kept Islam at the top of

the news. Discussion of the topic brings a

great deal of emotion, and unfortunately,

frequent misunderstanding. As Jews, we

are used to being a small religious

minority. We know what it is like to face

discrimination because of prejudice and

misinformation. We therefore should be

particularly sensitive to getting to know a

little more about Islam than what we see

in sensational headlines and about our

neighbors who practice it.

Brotherhood Corner Phil Margolis, Brotherhood President

Former South Windsor mayor and

local physician Saud

Anwar will join us as

our speaker at 10:30

a.m. on February

7th

(after our World

Wide Wrap and

breakfast) to discuss

Islam and current issues facing the

Islamic community. Those who attended

the Rabbi’s Interfaith program a few years ago can attest to Dr. Anwar’s

knowledge and genuine interest in

dialogue and understanding. Dr. Anwar has been involved in national

and international humanitarian and peace

initiatives. He is frequently invited to

consult for the FBI and Homeland

Security and has organized disaster relief

missions to Haiti and Pakistan. He has

also been a frequent guest in the local,

national and international media to

discuss Islamic relations and international affairs, and his efforts have

been recognized at the state and federal

levels and by multiple professional

organizations. Please help! Once a year, BSBI members receive a

small envelope asking for $10 to support a local breakfast. The breakfast is more

than an event sponsored by four local

men’s organizations, including the BSBI

Brotherhood. It serves as a fundraiser for

a local family facing the difficult reality

of a child with a life-threatening disease.

This year’s family is no different. Taylor

Bedini suffers from Tuberous Sclerosis

Complex (TSC), a rare genetic condition

that causes tumor grown on her organs,

and as a result, causes her to have

epileptic seizures. Unfortunately, she has needed to regularly travel to Boston for

treatment and surgeries. So, please

support the event with a contribution,

and by all means, join us for this

enjoyable meal. Volunteer servers are

also welcome. Please contact me if

design the day with wondrous skill,

set out the succession of seasons, and

arrange the stars in the sky according

to Your will.” What a magnificent

statement of the beauty of God’s

creation. The only thing better is the

original Hebrew, but if one cannot

appreciate that, surely this translation

is an outstanding second best. And if

you get somewhat bored with the

traditional version, our siddur has a

poem by Rabbi Harlow on the same

page that can be read as a substitute:

“Twilight, high noon, dusk and

dawn; Though we are mortal, we are

creation’s crown...Resplendent skies,

sunset, sunrise; The grandeur of

creation lifts our lives.” I am providing this little taste just to

whet your appetite. If you are a

Jewry Duty member, don’t miss your

night (or come another that is more

convenient that month). You can get

more out of it than the good feeling

of doing your duty. If you are not yet

on the list, give me call and I will

steer you to a night you are really

needed. It is already February, more

significantly, it is the Hebrew month

of Sh’vat. The winter is almost over

and spring is on the way. Hang in

there.

Rabbi Richard Plavin

But for me, having devoted so many

years of my life to Hebrew study, the

words of the prayers, the poetry of

the siddur, are even more moving. I

understand that it is not as easy to

appreciate these prayers in

translation, but my colleague Rabbi

Jules Harlow, whose translations fill

our Siddur Sim Shalom, is a master

of the art of translation. His

philosophy as a liturgist is to shy

away from literal translations and

instead craft a reading that reflects

the meaning, the message and the

feeling of a prayer. And he does this

so well. I am not obligated to do so, but I

often attend the weekday evening

(Jewry Duty) service. I do so for two

reasons. First, I know that we often

have trouble gathering a minyan and

there are folks serious about their

obligation to say Kaddish on a

Yahrzeit, or as mourners, and I want

to count in the quorum. (I feel so

badly when I see that someone has

gone out of his or her way to come to

shul to say Kaddish and then cannot

because someone else did not bother

to keep a pledge.) But secondly, I

appreciate the service. The very first

prayer is an excellent example of

Rabbi Harlow’s artistry. “You open

BSBI Community

“The Syrian Refugee Crisis: Realities and Responses”

Jewish Theological Seminary Live Stream @ BSBI

Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 7:30 PM

The conflict in Syria has produced the world’s largest refugee crisis, with four million people forced to flee the country

since the war began—becoming a major humanitarian and political issue. And across the globe, 60 million people are

currently displaced: the worst refugee catastrophe since the Second World War. What are the realities on the ground in Syria and other affected countries? What are our responsibilities as individuals, as a country, and as a Jewish community?

How do we fulfill the Jewish moral imperative of dealing compassionately with the stranger even as we ensure domestic

security? Join us at BSBI to watch a live stream of this very timely lecture. If you cannot make it to the shul that evening, you

can also watch the program on your own at www.jtsa.edu/live. SPEAKERS: Mark Hetfield is President and CEO of HIAS, a global organization, guided by Jewish values, which assists

refugees of all faiths and ethnicities. He is an expert in refugee and immigration law, policy, and programs. Dr. Georgette

F. Bennett is founder and president of the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding. In 2013, she founded the

Multifaith Alliance for Syrian Refugees as a faith-based response to the worst humanitarian crisis since World War

II. Shadi Martini, Senior Syria Advisor at the Multifaith Alliance for Syrian Refugees, was a businessman in Syria before

the war turned him into a refugee, activist, and advocate for greater cooperation across faiths and cultures. He fled Syria in 2012.

BSBI Security Update Our security committee recently met to review

what’s in place, where we can improve our systems, trainings and next steps. We had full attendance and

great input. We also want to thank Rick Berkman,

On January 5th, 26 students gathered at BSBI to learn about Israel Activism. The program was very well received and we are pleased by the

enthusiasm of our congregation on this topic.

This January, BSBI hosted Avinoam Patt for a three week lecture series co-sponsored by the Jewish Theological Seminary entitled The Jewish State, The Jewish Problem. Around 40 individuals

signed up for this fascinating program.

Buy Your Scrip @ BSBI!

Crown Market gift cards are once

again available for purchase in the

BSBI office! The Supermarket Gift

card program is sponsored by

Sisterhood, Hadassah, and the

Synagogue and the profits from the

sale of gift cards are returned to the

three organizations. The program

has a dedicated corps of volunteers

who print the labels for the

envelopes, pack the envelopes with

the monthly gift card orders, and deliver the filled envelopes.

We have gift cards for the following stores:

Stop & Shop, ShopRite, Big Y, Highland Park Market,

Crown Market, CVS

Not a participant yet? It's simple - Just come in and purchase the

cards with a check (preferred), or with a MasterCard, Visa, or

Discover Card. This is one way you can really help the

organizations you love and that are so meaningful to you! And

just think, you get to visit your temple, see friends, or stop in

and visit with the Rabbi or office staff. If you would like to commit to a monthly distribution call David

Alter at 860-872-9579 or Saundra Roethel at 860-643-9563, ext.

100. If you are not ready to commit to a monthly order, please

stop into the synagogue office. Saundra would be more than

happy to assist you in the purchase of gift cards. If it is not

convenient for you to pick up your gift card order, one of our

volunteers will be happy to deliver them to you.

Support BSBI While Shopping Online

Do you make purchases on Amazon.com? If so, make

sure to follow these easy steps to log in using AmazonSmile!

1. Go to this webpage to set BSBI as your charity of choice:

http://amzn.to/1HPEx61. This link should already have

BSBI selected. You can also get to this page by going to

the BSBI website, www.myshul.org and clicking on the

link on the homepage under “shopping”.

2. Sign in with your Amazon account. If you do not have one,

the page should prompt you to create one. There is no cost

to create a basic Amazon account.

3. When you shop, make sure that you go to

https://smile.amazon.com/ rather than the regular Amazon

site. If you do not do this step, your purchases won’t be

counted towards the percentage that BSBI receives.

4. Not all items are eligible for this program, especially those

sold by other sellers. When looking at the item you’d like

to purchase, look for a note like the one below. If that note

is there and you have logged in to the link above, 0.5% of

your purchase will be donated to BSBI by Amazon – there

is no additional cost to you!

Reminder:

Apply for BSBI Scholarships by

February 1st

Beth Sholom B’nai Israel is fortunate to have a

number of scholarships to support a broad range of

activities that enhance and support Jewish activities

of young people in our synagogue. These

scholarships provide our youngsters with

opportunities for exciting summer programs in a

Jewish setting. Any BSBI member in good standing may apply for

scholarship funding, but all applications must be

received no later than Friday, February 1st. The

Scholarship Committee meets once a year in April to

review all applications, and late applications cannot

be considered. You can get a scholarship application

from the synagogue office. You can also download

an application form from the synagogue’s web site

at this link:

http://www.myshul.org/resources/forms/.

Support BSBI’s Library!

There are many ways to support BSBI’s amazing library. Donate funds to the library to help us purchase new books

to expand our collection, keeping it new and up to date.

Volunteer a few hours of your time to help with upkeep and

day to day operations. Another great way to support the library is to come in and

use it! Members can check out books for 4 weeks – no

library card required! Simply stop in when BSBI is open (excluding Shabbat), fill out the card in the back of the

book and leave it in the box. This allows us to keep track of

our materials, and aids in loss prevention. Also, please

remember to close and lock the doors if you open them. Not sure what you’re looking for? We have a large

assortment of biographies, fiction, and non-fiction work,

including an extensive Holocaust collection. The library also has a range of children’s books, located in the

Silverstein Center. Stop in and search our catalog. We also

have a file on our website that can be searched by author or title (press the “ctrl” and “f” keys on your keyboard and

type into the field that pops up near the top or bottom of the

screen). Surely there is something here for everyone!

Community Seder on April 23rd

Dear BSBI friends,

What is the Yiddish word for ambiance? The answer at our community Seder is heymish*.

Rave reviews came in the last few years: the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, the food is

delicious, and the participation by children and adults adds to the warmth, fun, and shared

experience. (The fine wine selection contributes to the warmth.) Some attend solo and others

come with their families or friends. The well-organized and carefully orchestrated event keeps

to schedule. The Haggadot suit our congregation and the mix of formal ritual and entertaining

activities gives us an evening to remember.

And oh! Did we mention that the food is delicious? We hope to see you at the community

Seder on April 23rd.

Cordially,

Your 2016 Seder Committee

Steve Cohen (Chair), Lisa Plavin and Dawn Steigelfest (Co-chairs),

Dave Alter, Rick Berkman, Victor Bernstein, Bea Brodie, Elly Cohen, Ellie Flink,

Richard Plavin

Shabbat Across America

On Friday night, March 4, 2016, hundreds of synagogues across the continent will take part in a historic national

Jewish event to celebrate what unifies all Jews — Shabbat! Everyone is invited… singles, couples, families — all

ages. That’s the magic of Shabbat Across America and Shabbat Across Canada. By participating in this continent -

wide event, you will not only have the opportunity to experience Shabbat, but you will be sharing your experience

with tens of thousands of Jews across North America. Dinner costs only $8 for adults and $5 for children 5 and up. Children under 5 years of age are free. To sign up for

this dinner online, go the MyShul.org website, click on the calendar link, go to March 4th, click on Shabbat

Across America and fill out the form. You can also sign up by sending the payment to Dawn Steigelfest, 26

Tamarac Drive, Glastonbury, CT 06033. Deadline is Tuesday, March 2, 2016. Please see enclosed flyer for more

details.

This event is sponsored by the David Sherman Foster Fund
