CONCEPT

Devon 50, a Pennsylvania troop from Devon, PA, built a cabin on a plot of

land in the early 1900s that they rent out to visiting troops throughout the year – they have more recently built another cabin that is solely for their use. This has been a tradition with Troop 189 for well over 10 years. Much scouting history is on the walls of their cabin. They have a wood-burning stove for heat and a kitchenette to prep meals. There is electricity and in the past we have brought a projector and laptop for an evening movie. Go to this link for more information and pictures:

TRANSPORTATION This drive takes approx 3hrs and 25 min and approx $15 each way in tolls. This is not reimbursable via troop funds (but if you take more than your son, miles at least are tax deductible). Refer to appendix 2.

BASE CAMP AND HIKES Our base camp at Devon 50 is approx 30-40 min away from our hiking event at Valley Forge National Park. Valley Forge Hike All scouts going on this campout the first year will take part in a 10-mile hike through historic Valley Forge learning navigation skills along the way as well as immersion in the history of General George Washington’s Continental Army. With a question and answer booklet filled out, each scout can earn a cool medal to be worn on their scout sash. The normal method is to have a contingent of at least two adults drive the group down and back returning to the cabin by 6:00pm or so. This group is the one that the grubmaster (both adult and scout) is picked from - this ensures a timely meal. All scouts going on this campout for the second year will lead this 10-mile hike through the battlefield. This gives them practice with navigation, and exercises their leadership skills among their peers, as well – perhaps the most valuable of lessons this weekend. Philly Hike

Any scout who attends this campout for a 3rd time or more, will have the option of going on a 7-mile hike through the city of Philadelphia instead of the 10-mile hike through Valley Forge. This will entail immersion in historic sites and learning cultural history and pop history not to mention some great eats. The normal method is to have a contingent of at least two adults drive the group down and back returning to the cabin by 7:00pm or so. This trip does require the scout to bring funds for food and entry into select attractions as this is not provided by the troop.

The Eastern State Penitentiary This year we are repeating something special. The Eastern State Penitentiary has a haunted house that we are going to go through. The Valley Forge scouts will join the Philly crew for dinner as a group close to the Penitentiary and then attend the event at approx 1830 - 1900. Those who choose not to attend the Halloween event for any reason will relax back at Devon 50 cabin with two or more adults; play cards, watch a movie, etc. Dinner for the cabin group is provided as part of the grub plan.

****ATTENTION Scouts and Parents***** This haunted State Penitentiary is considered by some travel sites as one of the top 15 in the country for their scare factor. This is not recommended for those under 13. Scouts under 13 who wish to attend should have a parent along. All children under 18 need a signed waiver (by parent) before admittance is allowed (refer to appendix 4). There will a charge of $39/ person for entry to the event plus funds for dinner. A link for this site shows details and FAQ.

https://www.easternstate.org/halloween

Dinner at Bridgids Dinner, at Bridgids, will start at approx 1700. Refer to Appendix 3. All attending the dinner and haunted State Penitentiary, both Philly and Valley Forge hikers, need to have a ride secured back to Devon 50.

Appendix 4: Haunted State Penitentiary

Welcome to Terror Behind the Walls Eastern State Penitentiary is a ruin. It was abandoned in 1971. While historic ruins and haunted attractions are fun,

they can pose dangers to visitors. The City of Philadelphia therefore requires visitors, staff and volunteers to sign

this release. Your support is essential to save this National Historic Landmark. Thank you!

ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND RELEASE FROM LIABILITY

The City of Philadelphia (the “City”) is the owner of the Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site located on the north side of

Fairmount Avenue between Corinthian Avenue and 22nd Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (the “Property”). Eastern State

Penitentiary Historic Site, Inc. (“ESPHS”) is a Pennsylvania nonprofit corporation that conducts Terror Behind The Walls

(“Event”). The Event employs strobe lighting, fog machines, startling noises and props, and other special effects designed to

startle and disorient visitors.

In consideration for being permitted to enter the Property and to attend and participate in all aspects of the Event, and intending

to be legally bound by this Release under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I agree as follows:

1. Notice of Condition. I have been informed that: (A) the Property and all personal property used in or about the Property may

be in an unsafe or hazardous condition; (B) the City and ESPHS make no representation as to the condition of the Property and

related personal property and assume no responsibility therefor; and (C) attendance at and participation in the Event may cause

personal injury (including death, bodily harm, and property loss).

2. Assumption of Risk. I voluntarily assume all risk of loss, damage, or injury (including death) that may result from: (A) the

Property and related personal property; and (B) my attendance and participation in the Event, whether occurring before, during,

or after entrance to the Event.

3. Release and Indemnification. For myself and for my heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, I waive, release, and forever

discharge the City and its successors, assigns, officers, boards, employees, agents, commissions, and representatives (acting

officially or otherwise) (each a “City Indemnified Party”) and ESPHS and its successors, assigns, representatives, directors,

officers, agents, contractors, employees, attorneys, sponsors, advertisers, and volunteers (each an “ESPHS Indemnified Party”),

from and against any losses, costs (including, but not limited to, counsel fees and litigation costs), claims, suits, actions, damages,

liabilities, and expenses, of every kind and nature, whether known or unknown, in law or equity, (collectively “Claims”) arising

out of or by reason of any activities relating to the Property and related personal property or my attendance at and participation in

the Event including, without limitation, any illness or injury (including death), even if any such Claim is caused in whole or in

part by a City Indemnified Party or an ESPHS Indemnified Party.

I further agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless a City Indemnified Party and an ESPHS Indemnified Party from and

against any Claims by third parties arising out of my presence on the Property or my attendance at and participation in the Event.

4. Representations. I represent that I am at least 18 years of age and legally competent to enter into this Release. To the best of

my knowledge, there is no health-related impediment to my presence on the Property or my attendance at and participation in the

Event.

5. Photographs and Other Media. I authorize the City and ESPHS and their respective successors and assigns, to photograph,

audiotape, videotape, or otherwise record me as an attendant at or participant in the Event and grant the right to the City and

ESPHS and their respective successors and assigns, to use such photographs, audiotapes, films,

tapes, or other recordings, including reproductions thereof or likenesses based thereon, with or without my name or with a

fictitious name, in any legal manner, in all means or media now known or later invented, and the right to copyright same. I waive

all right of inspection and approval and release each City Indemnified Party and each ESPHS

Indemnified Party from all liability arising out of the exercise of these rights.

6. Admission Ticket. Any violation of law or any other inappropriate behavior by me while on the Property or during the Event

may result in revocation of my ticket to enter the Property and attend the Event, and I may be removed from the Property. In such

case, I am not entitled to a refund of the purchase price or any associated charges.

I understand the terms of this Release and I have willingly signed it as my own free act and intend to be legally bound.
