Foreword

This British Standard, which was first published in 1958, covers a basic range of sections formed by cold rolling from steel strip. The sizes in this revision include equivalents of previously used imperial sizes and also metric sizes adopted by the European Study Group for Cold Rolled Sections (comprised of members from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and the United Kingdom).Although sections may not always be available ex-stock the sizes given in this standard are those most commonly in production. The purchaser would find it advantageous to use these sizes where possible, but size variations can readily be accommodated and in such cases requirements should be discussed with the manufacturer of the section.Attention is drawn to Addendum no. 1(1975) to BS 449-2 for design and construction details.A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.

Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations.

Summary of pagesThis document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages 1 to 32, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.

1 ScopeThis British Standard specifies the dimensions, mass and geometrical properties of the basic ranges of eight simple and three compound types of cold rolled steel section.

2 ReferenceThe title of the standards publication referred to in this standard is given on the inside back cover.

3 Basis of calculationWhen steel strip is cold roll formed slight thinning occurs at the corners. The actual strip width necessary to form a section is therefore smaller than its theoretical width measured along the centre line of its cross section. For strip widths to be used in practice, experience has evolved reduction factors from which the thinning effect at the corners can be determined. In view of this the properties of the sections given in the tables have been computed using the reduction factors as briefly outlined in Appendix A.

4 Dimensions and tolerances4.1 Dimensions. The dimensions and profiles of the sections shall be in accordance with Table 1 toTable 14.The profile dimensions and angular accuracy shall be measured at a point not less than 150 mm from the end of the section.4.2 Tolerances for simple sections (Table 1 to Table 11). The straightness of any length shall be such that the offset does not exceed 1/600 of that length. The deviation of the profile dimensions shall not exceed ± 0.4 mm. The deviation from the angle of 90° shall not exceed ± 1°. The sections shall be reasonably free from twist and in particular cases the acceptable degree of twist shall be the subject of agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer. The proportions of the sections may be such that the stated tolerance on the angle could lead to a variation on the overall profile dimensions exceeding the specified tolerance of ± 0.4 mm. In such cases the acceptable tolerance on the angle shall be the subject of agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

The ± 0.4 mm profile tolerance shall not apply to elements having a free edge, e.g. lengths of the legs of angles, channels, tees and zed sections and the lips of lipped channels and lipped zed sections, etc. In these cases the tolerances shall be as follows.

The foregoing tolerances apply to all sections within the ranges included in Table 1 to Table 11 (i.e. sections of the same shape but of intermediate sizes and thicknesses); tolerances on cold rolled sections outside the basic ranges tabulated should be the subject of agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer. The tolerances on ordered lengths shall be as follows.

For manufacturing reasons the corner radii may vary slightly from those shown in the tables. This, however, has a negligible effect on the properties of the section.4.3 Tolerances for compound sections(Table 12, Table 13 and Table 14). For compound sections, the tolerances shall be the subject of agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

Appendix A Basis of calculation for reduction factors

As described in clause 3, slight thinning at the corners occurs when steel strip is cold roll formed. The actual geometrical properties are therefore different from the theoretical properties that would be calculated if no allowance were made for this thinning effect. The properties shown in the tables in this standard are the more accurate values, an allowance for the thinning at the corners having been made in accordance with the following formula:

wheretred is the reduced corner thickness (see diagram)

r is the internal radius (= t for sections up to and including 4 mm thick and = 1"t for sections over 4 mm up to and including 6 mm thick)t is the unreduced thickness# is the reduction factor

The reduction factor, #, is taken as 0.30 for and 0.35 for

The mean radius of curvature, rm, as used in the calculations is given by:

rm = r + 0.5tThere is a somewhat similar thinning effect in the case of the radii at the top of tee sections. This has been allowed for in the calculations of the properties tabulated in this standard, although the effect in this case is, in fact, very small indeed.

BSI — British Standards InstitutionBSI is the independent national body responsible for preparing British Standards. It presents the UK view on standards in Europe and at the international level. It is incorporated by Royal Charter.

Revisions

British Standards are updated by amendment or revision. Users of British Standards should make sure that they possess the latest amendments or editions.

It is the constant aim of BSI to improve the quality of our products and services. We would be grateful if anyone finding an inaccuracy or ambiguity while using this British Standard would inform the Secretary of the technical committee responsible, the identity of which can be found on the inside front cover. Tel: 020 8996 9000. Fax: 020 8996 7400.

BSI offers members an individual updating service called PLUS which ensures that subscribers automatically receive the latest editions of standards.

Buying standards

Orders for all BSI, international and foreign standards publications should be addressed to Customer Services. Tel: 020 8996 9001. Fax: 020 8996 7001.

In response to orders for international standards, it is BSI policy to supply the BSI implementation of those that have been published as British Standards, unless otherwise requested.

Information on standards

BSI provides a wide range of information on national, European and international standards through its Library and its Technical Help to Exporters Service. Various BSI electronic information services are also available which give details on all its products and services. Contact the Information Centre. Tel: 020 8996 7111. Fax: 020 8996 7048.

Subscribing members of BSI are kept up to date with standards developments and receive substantial discounts on the purchase price of standards. For details of these and other benefits contact Membership Administration. Tel: 020 8996 7002. Fax: 020 8996 7001.
