Service Unit News November 2012
Area 3, Service Unit 700, Council Code 578
From you SU Director…
As we are winding down the Year of the Girl, I wanted to reflect just a moment of some of the ways that our Service Unit
celebrated the Girl Scout Centennial. In January, several girls and adults from our service unit had made their way to the
west coast to participate in the opening event of the anniversary year, the 2012 Rose Parade. It was the first time that Girl
Scout presented a float in the famed parade. Having been lucky enough to go on that trip, I can say without a doubt that a
fabulous time was had by all. In March, both our city mayors proclaimed 2012 the Year of the Girl during their respective
City Council meetings. It was an honor to watch the girls that could attend participate in the ceremony. On March 12, the
official Girl Scout birthday, many troops celebrated by joining the Council sing-along on the steps of the State Capitol. We
made the biggest friendship circle I've ever seen! In April, we had the Camporee. I'm proud to say that our service unit had
the largest representation of the entire council and everyone did a wonderful job working the activity booths. We made
quite an impression. Over the summer, at least one troop made a trek to Savannah, GA, the birthplace of Girl Scouts. I can
only imagine the memories those girls brought back with them. Just a couple of weeks ago, many girls and adults from our
SU bussed our way to the Texas State Fair. Sadly, it was the day after Big Tex "died". Despite that one sour note, the trip was
a success, meaning everyone made it back. The Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas did a brilliant job with the exhibit in the
State Hall. I can report that I've had a deep fried Samoa and that one is quite enough. I'm sure there are many stories of
celebration throughout our SU. I hope that you will share those stories.
In addition to these fun events and travel, several troops have been working diligently each month to do the activities
required to earn the 100th Anniversary Patch. The activities for October seemed especially challenging. I hope that many
girls have been documenting their volunteer hours so that they can earn the special 100 hours of service pin. Please make
sure to read the GSCTX 100th Anniversary Activity Booklet for specific instructions on receiving these recognitions.
I hope to have one last event to wrap up the Year of the Girl, Lighting the Way! Girl Scouts will never stop lighting the way
for all others to follow. Each one of our girls has a bright future ahead of her. Remember that you are one of her many
lights, guiding her up the leadership path where she will make a difference in the world.

Rallyhood:
Please be patient with Rallyhood. We are in the process of making some huge changes that are going to make it so much better for our service unit. We should be ready to unveil the new community-hub by the December SU meeting and we plan to have a Rallyhood representative at the SU meeting to give a presentation and answer questions.
Service Project Opportunity - Stocking a Library
Troop 9044 is asking for your help in a service project. San Joaquin, Caaguazu (Paraguay) has never had a public library
and their public school system has very few books for students to read. We are working with a Peace Corps volunteer, Keith Pitstick, to increase literacy in their
community. He is currently building the first public library and starting the first reading club. He needs our help
collecting books! We need all types of books in Spanish - kids, teens, fiction, educational. We will also be accepting
donations to help with shipping costs. To learn more about this exciting project, attend the November evening service unit meeting. We will play a brief video introduction and
then have a Q&A session with Keith (assuming no internet service issues in Paraguay)!

Watch for revisions to Volunteer Essentials (Chapter 7) on the GSCTX website. It is being updated with GSUSA updates and GSCTX Council Money Earning Standards.
1. Sponsorship for troops will only include gifts-in-kind. Gifts-in-kind are material donations such as meeting space, craft supplies, snacks, etc. Sponsorship will not include monetary donations of any type.
2. Troop Bank Accounts will remain at the $1,000 year end limit. Documentation with the intent of how the monies will be spent for girl leadership experiences must be provided to your Pathways Coordinator when the troop financial report is due. There is an assumption that there are older girl troops that are setting monies aside for troop travel.
3. Service Unit Bank Accounts will remain at the $5,000 year end limit. Documentation with the intent of how the monies will be spent for girl and adult leadership experiences must be provided to your Pathways Coordinator when the service unit financial report is due.

BCS Marathon Needs Girl Scouts
On Sunday, December 9, 2012, Bryan/College Station will be the site of
Year Two of the BCS Marathon. The race this year will be larger and
more exciting last year as they’ve added a much larger expo event for
packet pick up, there’s a kids marathon on Saturday morning, and we’re
hosting a pasta dinner the evening before the race. I am serving on the
marathon planning committee. I can’t tell you how much thought,
planning and preparation is going into this event to make it one of the
best races in Texas. All of the committee members are volunteers and
100% of the proceeds goes to three local charities that serve children.
We still need lots of volunteers in general, but in particular, we need
older Girl Scouts (Cadettes – Ambassadors)! On Saturday, December 8,
we are holding a pasta party at Central Baptist Church where 500 racers
and their families will meet to “carb up” before the race. We need
about 20 youth volunteers to be the “servers” for the evening. It will
be a buffet style service, but to control portions, we want to have youth
dishing out the yummy goodies. Please email Michelle
([email protected] SUBJECT: BCS Marathon) if you are
interested and available.
Howdy Daycamp
Daycamp is months away, 8 of them to be exact. However, it is never to early to start planning. In fact, it is a must. As Amanda Nuernberg and Kathy Williams, our assistant co-directors from last year, slide right into their co-director roles, we need to fill the vacuum behind them. That means we need two volunteers to be assistant co-directors. Don't be shy. The sooner we get the new assistants in place, the sooner planning can begin.
