Brushstroke Phrases
Absolute Phrase
Absolute phrases combine a noun and a participle with any modifiers or objects.
Not all absolute phrases contain a participle. Sometimes it’s only the noun and the modifiers.
Building an Absolute Phrase
Her work completed, Amanda went home.

Examples
His tail between his legs, the dog sulked out the door.
The dog, with his mind on that awful cat, sulked out the door.
Participial Phrase
A participial phrase begins with a past or present participle that DESCRIBES a noun or noun phrase.
A participle in a participial phrase now acts as an adjective!!!

Stuck in the closet, Maria began to panic.
