YEAR 6 POLO SHIRTS

Please ensure payment is made by this coming Friday 15th March. There are samples of some of the sizes at the office for students to try on if needed. NO LATE ORDERS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

SWIM SCHOOL

Please be advised that all swim school spots have been filled. An alert was sent out on the Skoolbag App on Tuesday 5th of March. It is therefore too late to make a payment. Swim School will start on Monday 25th of March (Week 9).

METHODS OF PAYMENT

Payment can be made at the office between the hours of 8.30am and 2.30pm. You may pay in cash (correct amount if possible, as we do not keep change). You may also pay via a Visa or Mastercard (debit or credit). The preferred method for payment for all school related expenses is online. You can pay using a Visa or Mastercard (debit or credit) via the Skoolbag App or the school’s website. Simply click on the “Make a Payment” tab. This is a very safe and secure way of making a school payment. A receipt will be sent to your chosen email account.

STUDENT EMERGENCY CONTACT DETAIL REPORT

If you haven’t as yet checked your child’s emergency contact details report, please do so at your earliest convenience. We ask that you make any necessary changes, sign and return to the office. The report is to ensure that the school has all of the current and up-to-date information for your child. This includes home address, phone numbers, Medicare Number, allergies and illness. Please sign and return the report, even if there are no changes to be made.

HARMONY DAY CELEBRATIONS

All students will take home a Harmony Day note this week. The note informs parents and carers why we celebrate Harmony Day. It is also to advise everyone that we will celebrate Harmony Week on Thursday 21st of March (Week 8) by wearing the colour orange and also holding a special whole school assembly. All are welcome to attend the assembly which will commence at 12pm.

STAGE 3 EXCURSION

As advised at the recent Information Session held at the school, Years 5 and 6 are off to Canberra this year. The dates of the trip are Tuesday 13th of August until Friday 16th of August. A information note and payment plan will be sent home in the near future.

WHOLE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY

This term we will hold another whole school assembly on the last day of term. All parent, carers and family members are welcome. Students will parade the Easter hats they will make at home. Also, the class with the best attendance for Term 1 will be presented with a trophy.

P & C NEWS

Canteen Helpers are needed

So that our Canteen can continue to run from Monday to Friday each week, we require the assistance of parents and grandparents to help our Canteen Co-Ordinator. If you can spare three hours once a month or once a fortnight, please contact the school. It would be most unfortunate if we were forced to close the Canteen on certain days, however this is a possibility if we do not have the support of our school community.

MEET THE STAFFTannon MullerHi, my name is Tannon Muller. I’m the newest member of staff on the West Wallsend team. I’m lucky enough to be teaching 3/4M this year!

I’ve been working with children now for over 10 years, in a variety of settings including outdoor recreation camps, OOSH, as well as being the nominated supervisor at a vacation care centre.

I grew up on the Central Coast, before moving to Newcastle for uni in 2011. I currently reside in Cooks Hill. My hobbies include snowboarding, motorbike riding, scuba diving and all sports.

What I love about this profession is not only teaching children, but also learning from children. I’m looking forward to the challenges and opportunities the year brings!

Dear parents

At our school we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone.

Sometimes, it can be difficult for parents or carers to know what to do when their child talks to them about bullying.

You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone.

If your child talks to you about bullying:

1. Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need to: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.

2. Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.

3. Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.

4. Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.

5. Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher and, if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety.

6. Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.

If you are looking for support for yourself to deal with a bullying situation, you will find ideas on the Bullying. No Way! website for parents. As well, please contact the school if you would like to discuss any aspect of our approach to preventing bullying.

Thanks for your support to make our school a great school for everyone.
