The Michigan Board of Nursing Scholarship Fund awarded Wayne County Community College District’s Nursing Program a $6,145.00 academic scholarship to help eligible nurses complete their education. Each year, the Scholarship funding is provided to colleges and universities that offer qualified Nursing programs. This year eight students were selected to receive $768.12, equal shares of the scholarship awarded to WCCCD Nursing Program. “We’re delighted to accept this award from the Michigan Board of Nursing,” said Northwestern Campus President Letitia Uduma. “We’re particularly excited that these are dollars that will help our students complete their education and put their valuable skills to practice in the real world.” The WCCCD Nursing Program focuses on providing real-world instruction with the latest training technologies and equipment. WCCCD nursing students have surpassed the average state and national passage rates for the Nursing National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for the past several years. Most WCCCD nursing program graduates stay in the state and work at area hospitals upon completion of their studies. INSIDE Where Learning Leads to a Better Life! Low Cost Dental Services offered at WCCCD Dental Clinic at Northwest Campus

A new lab renovated at the WCCCD Northwest Campus Health Science building provides nursing students with a

new interventional care unit that mirrors those in a hospital setting in the real world. Interventional care units are prep and recovery areas for patients undergoing a range of minimally invasive procedures, including cardio catheterization or pacemaker implantation. The use of minimally invasive procedures to treat heart, stroke, vascular and other conditions has greatly expanded in recent years as hospitals seek better outcomes for patients.

Shawna Forbes Appointed to Detroit Workforce Development Board

Development area, we feel that the appointment of Ms. Forbes aligns with the District’s mission,” said Chancellor Dr. Curtis L. Ivery. “Ms. Forbes’ years of experience in higher education and growth within the district make her the perfect candidate to represent the college. We are confident in her leadership in this position will enable us to provide even greater service to the Detroit Workforce Development Board. “

Ms. Forbes heads WCCCD’s Continuing Education and Workforce Development efforts, overseeing support of the District’s more than 125 workforce training programs and continuing education programs that help to connect organizations with highly trained workers for in-demand jobs across 32 townships and 500 square miles.

Shawna Forbes, Vice Chancellor, School of Continuing Education and Workforce Development for Wayne County Community College District, has been appointed to The Detroit Workforce Development Board by Mayor Mike Duggan.

The Board is responsible for delivering workforce programs across the City. It is comprised of a cross-section of Detroit-based professionals who work on the board on a volunteer basis.

“Given the growth and advancements in the Workforce

“Employers are seeking highly skilled workers with specific banks of knowledge before they will even look at their resumes,” said WCCCD Vice Chancellor, School of Continuing Education and Workforce Development Shawna Forbes. “That’s why we tailor our programs around the current and existing needs of employers. Oftentimes, we can help that student transition directly into the work environment and make sure that they’re prepared to hit the ground running.”

The programs are vital to the region. Approximately 95 percent of WCCCD students remain in the state. Their higher earnings and associated increases in property income generate nearly $12 million in added tax revenue each year, and save state and local governments nearly $747,000 in avoided social costs.

Wayne County Community College District has expanded its workforce development programs to keep pace with the needs of students and area employers.

The District in 2014 won a federal grant to train unemployed veterans for jobs in cyber security. Additional programs have focused training on high-demand fields such as computer and software programming, advanced manufacturing and health care.

The expanded programs have been vital to helping workers adjust to the rise of a knowledge-based economy in Michigan.

WCCCD Workforce Development Programs Help Workers Reboot for New Economy

The WCCCD Dental Clinic located at the Health Science Center at Northwest campus is open for services by appointment Monday thru Friday 9am-9pm, and 9am -5pm on Saturdays. Low cost primary services rendered to patients range from health screening, teeth cleaning, teeth whitening, and more. WCCCD students are the best trained dental hygienists and assistants in the region due to the numerous hands-on training opportunities and highly credentialed and experienced faculty. To date, our dental hygiene graduates maintain 100% pass rate on the National Dental Hygiene and Northeast Regional Board Examinations.

The Northwest campus offers the community numerous opportunities to be a part of the Healthcare workforce in the region. Each year, hundreds of graduates from our healthcare

programs go on to work directly in the industry of their choice. Our current healthcare students can be found providing services in over 60 clinical sites and care centers throughout the metro region.

Patients undergoing minimally invasive procedures typically experience less pain, fewer complications and faster recovery times compared to the more traditional open surgery.

This newly renovated lab is one of many renovations to come as part of Wayne County Community College Districts goal to continue to be a premier college for health science programs.

The New Interventional Care Unit at Wayne County Community College District will serve several Health Science programs:

The nursing students will be able to use the unit, and work alongside with certified nursing assistant students, pharmacy technology students, as well as surgical technology students.
