    Dear friends,

Wow! What a busy, hectic week last week. It was one of those weekswhen most everything that could go wrong, did.

Kimberly and I were to leave for our annual camping trip to Lake Lidaon Thursday, but that did not happen. We had decided that our tentingdays were over, and were borrowing a camper to use for the weekend. That sounded like a simple enough idea, but I was wrong. In order to beable to use the camper I had to have brackets installed on my truck tosecure it. Easy enough? No. The brackets were to be installed lastTuesday, which would have given us plenty of time to prepare to leave. But, after bringing the truck to Hart Trailer Sales in Long Prairie to havethem installed, it was discovered the wrong brackets had been delivered.

After nearly an hour of researching where the correct ones could beordered to get them in time for us to still go camping on time, I wenthome and waited for the call the next day to let me know they came in.They never did. Nor did they the next day. By now I was getting, lets sayunhappy. After Thursday came and went, still with no brackets, it wasbeginning to look like we were not going to be able to make the trip.

Finally, late Friday morning the call came saying the brackets hadfinally arrived. They told me to bring the truck over right away, and theywould get them installed ASAP! I can not say enough about how helpfulHart Trailer Sales was at resolving this situation for us and getting us onour way, even if we did leave a day late.

This is about the same time I had another horrible realization. Imsure many of you remember an earlier letter of mine where I talked aboutmy Chocolate Lab, Perro, having cancer. Well, Perro had stopped eatinga couple days earlier, and I knew he only had a matter of days before hewould pass away. Well, on that Friday morning I had left Perro lyingcomfortably in the sun in the yard and went to the office for a while. When I came home, he was nowhere to be found. I was shocked to thinkthat he had wandered off on his own, especially as weak as he was. Aftermuch searching of the area by Kimberly, Nicholas and I, we realized thatwe were probably never going to see him again.

Ive heard that dogs know when their time has come, and find an outof the way location where they feel secure to pass away. Evidently, this iswhat he did. It was not exactly the kind of ending to a many year rela-tionship we wanted, but it is what he wanted, and I am now ok with that.

I am also sure that many of you remember that about the same time Ifound out Perro had cancer, we got Benjamin, the white lab puppy.

Coming back Sunday afternoon to a home without Perro hit me a bithard, but Benjamin seemed to realize right away that he is now the dogof the house. And he has taken over with a vengeance.

Now, its Monday morning and time to begin another week. Hopefullythere are no big surprises.......

Im going to cut this short, lots to do. Enjoy what little bit of the sum-mer left.

    Aaron

    A letter fromthe country

We have been blessed withmore than our fair share of ain this year. Our lake isesigned to control floodingownstream, so its been easyo measure rainfall. An inch of ain will increase the level of he lake approximately oneoot. Im sure the farmersownstream appreciate theact their corn fields are not

ooding, but it does tend tomake my life more difficult.

Earlier this year, thetorms tore my Jon boat awayrom the dock and I had to goetrieve it from the middle of he pond. The next time wead predictions of severalnches of rain, I pulled myoat up on shore and removedhe drain plug. The water roseigh enough to float the boatff the lawn. Since the drainlug was removed, I wasnture wed ever find it. Ihought it would probablynk.

My wife and I took her pad-le boat out and finally found

it drifting at the far end of thelake, only half full of water. Iwas elated to see it still afloat, but it takes a long time and isa lot of work to tow a Jon boatfull of water for half of a milebehind a paddle boat.

The last rain storm we hadwas predicted to be the worstof the season. With memoriesstill fresh in my mind of soreknees from paddling and tow-ing, I pulled my Jon boat far-ther up the hill and took thepaddle boat all the way to thecabin and tied it to the foun-dation. My son, Damon, hap-pened to be over that eveningand asked if we should pullmy boat farther up the hill. Iassured him, the water hadnever before risen that high, and the lightening was get-ting too bad to risk going afterit.

The rain came down andthe lake came up. When wewoke in the morning, the rainwas still coming down and thesize of the lake had tripled. My boat was gone.

That was two weeks ago. Ittook several days for the laketo return to normal level. When we no longer had toswim to the dock, my wife andI launched the paddle boat inanother search for the way-ward, partially submergedJon boat. I must admit, a pad-dle boat is rather fun. Wespent several pleasantevenings paddling all over thelake. How hard could it be tofind a boat in a confined bodyof water. It obviously does not

sink or it would have beforenow. It could not get out of thelake without assistance, andIm sure nobody would bravethat storm to steal an old Jonboat.

The lake is small enoughwe could cover every inch in afew trips, even if we weretraveling by paddle boat. Wedrove the shoreline with thegator in places we could trav-el. I drove the truck to the farside and checked the backwa-ters. Almost convinced myboat had fallen into theBermuda Triangle of Southern Iowa, we gave upsearching with the paddleboat and started fishing fromit. It does not look too macho, but it still works.

Damon and my grandson,Zane stopped by yesterday togo fishing. When they stoppedby to report on their success, they had indeed caught sever-al nice fish, but better still, they had found my boat. Wehad gone past it numeroustimes but had not been look-ing in the right place at theright time.

It was on shore, severalyards from the water, behindsome willow trees. All I haveto do is attach a chain andlong rope from the boat to thetractor, cut down a few trees, and the boat will be safe athome again.

We could not believe a boatcould get that lost in a smalllake but are happy its foundagain.

    By Walter Scott

    The lost is found

Minnesota Departmentof Natural Resources AreaWildlife Supervisor KevinKotts said Friday, August5, that after examining theremains, of a mystery car-cass, found in ruralDouglas County on a ruralroad, there are no clearsigns of it not being a badg-er, however its longer tail isinconsistent with badgershe has seen.

Kotts said there areclear signs that the animalwas hit on the road, suffer-ing skull fractures, but anintact jaw could help deter-mine a positive identifica-tion.

He said he expects furtrappers who have moreexperience with local mam-

mals to examine the carcass in the near future. Kotts said the animal was taken to the Glenwood DNRffice and it has since been frozen.

Kotts said the DNR is considering burying the carcass to allow it to further decompose to aide thedentification process, but wants to avoid any possible interference with dogs and is concerned its pun-ent smell may linger nearby.

The dead white mammal has five claws, dark tufts of hair on its back and head and long toenails.Roadkill is nothing new for Minnesotans, but this curious creature got people talking.

Minnesota DNR attempting to identify strangeanimal found on rural Douglas County road

Lacey Ilse said she was driving near her home on County Road 86, south of Alexandria, when she spotted the mysterious mammal. "We saw something in themiddle of the road, and knew it wasn't a dog or a cat, because it didn't have hair.It had a clump of hair and all the rest was just white skin," Ilse said."it's ear wasall misshaped."

Noelle Jones sent the pictures to KSAX, and after posting them on the KSAXFacebook page that night, more than 175 comments have been posted about the

unusual animal, with guesses ranging from a skunk, badger, wolverine, wolf, oreven proof of the mythical chupacabra.

Jason Abraham, with the Department of Natural Resources, said he thinks itmay be a domestic dog, but he is still left with questions.

"The head suggests a canine, very likely a domestic dog," Abraham said."However, the right front foot appears to have five toes, which is not typical forcanines. Also, the long toenails are not typical for an active canine."

Ilse said some of her guinea hens and cats are missing and suspects the ani-mal or others in the area may be to blame. Several burrowed holes ranging fromfour to ten inches in size were also spotted near where the animal was found.

Parents urged to getchildren vaccinatedbefore school starts

A group of doctors issued astrong call to action to Minnesotaparents, asking them to make suretheir kids are immunized beforethe school year starts. Health careprofessionals are very passionateabout the issue because the num-ber of Minnesota kids getting vac-cines across all income and demo-graphic levels is going down, anddiseases that were once managedare now coming back. One doctorsaid the immunization drop isbecause many parents are moreafraid of the shots than the dis-eases they prevent. This is of grow-ing concern, especially afterMinnesotas measles outbreak thisspring.

Minnesota child wellnessexperts are encouraging parents toadd vaccinations to this yearsback-to-school checklist. The per-centage of Minnesota childrenreceiving vaccinations is declining, which concerns many in the med-ical community. The ChildrensPhysician Network, MinnesotaMedical Association, andMinnesota Head Start Associationare working to raise awareness aspart of Augusts NationalImmunization Awareness Month.

    Minnesota vaccination rates

rank poorly. Only 58.1 percent of Minnesota children ages 24-35months are up to date on all recom-mended vaccines.

The vaccination rate for tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping coughamong 11- to 12-year-olds is 52 per-cent, which is below the nationalaverage and ranks 35th amongstates.

Going unvaccinated puts peopleat an unnecessary risk of acquiringvaccine-preventable diseases. Thebiggest danger is to infants who arenot old enough to be vaccinated andget exposed to a variety of diseases.

Immunization is one of the best

decisions every parent can make toprotect their child, said Deborah

Moses, senior director of HeadStart and Early Head Start atCommunity Action Partnership of Ramsey and Washington Counties. Its like putting their child in a carseat.

Recent outbreaks show that vac-cine-preventable diseases have notbeen completely controlled. In2010, 1,000 cases of whoopingcough were reported in Minnesota. This spring, Hennepin Countyexperienced one of the biggestmeasles outbreaks in the U.S.More Minnesotans caught measlesduring this time than the past 13years combined. The outbreak, which originated from an unvacci-nated child, affected 20 people whohad not been vaccinated or weretoo young to be vaccinated.

Measles is highly contagious, and its complications can be seri-ous, said Michael Garvis, MD, apediatrician and member of Childrens Physician Network. The only way to prevent it is tomake sure you and your childrenare immunized. I strongly encour-age Minnesotans to check theirvaccination status to preventfuture outbreaks.

Immunization is commonlyregarded as one of the greatest suc-cess stories in public health.

Vaccines have eradicated smallpoxand significantly reduced the num-ber of cases of measles, polio, and

other dangerous diseases. Despitethese efforts, an increasing numberof Minnesotans are refusing ordelaying shots for their children. Many parents have never wit-nessed the damaging effects of vac-cine-preventable disease, whichhas led many to feel unconcernedabout the importance of gettingvaccinated. People refusing vac-cines come from all socioeconomicsituations, from the impoverishedto the highly educated.

There is no credible researchsupporting a link between autismand vaccines, said Amy Gilbert,M.D., a family physician and chair

of the Minnesota Medical Association Public Health

Committee. Many people continueto have this concern and refusevaccines for this reason. We arestill working hard to dispel thisrumor and reinforce the impor-tance of keeping childrens vaccinesup to date. Our goal is forMinnesota to surpass a 90% overallvaccination rate.MINNESOTAS RECOMMEND-ED IMMUNIZATION SCHED-ULE INCLUDES:

    For infants and young children:DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertus-sis), IPV (polio), MMR (measles,mumps, rubella), varicella (chickenpox), PCV (pneumococcal), hepati-tis A and hepatitis B, rotavirus,influenza, and Haemophilus (Hib)vaccinations;

    For children ages 7 to 18:Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertus-sis), MCV (meningococcal), influen-za, and HPV (human papillo-mavirus) vaccinations;

For adults: Td (tetanus, diph-theria) vaccinations every 10 yearsand influenza vaccination annual-ly.

Where to get vaccinated Doctors offices Medical clinics Hospitals Urgent care facilities (not all) Walk-in clinics (not all)Most Minnesota clinics are part

of a program called Minnesota Vaccines for Children (MnVFC),

which will cover the cost of the vac-cines. Many clinics ask for a fee ordonation to cover the cost of admin-istering the shot. MnVFC distrib-utes about $39 million worth of vaccines to public and private clin-ics in Minnesota each year.

Getting shots at the right ages isimportant, but it is never too late tocatch up. Please see the full sched-ule of vaccinations under state vac-cination law at:

    http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/immunize/laws/index.html

Blood donations nationally havebeen declining this summer and sup-plies are at seriously low levels.Though the American Red Crossissued a national appeal for blooddonors on July 11, blood products aregoing out to area hospitals just asquickly as donations are coming in.

All blood types are needed espe-cially type O negative, B negative and

A negative to ensure blood suppliesdo not drop to emergency levels.

Summer blood donors can meanthe difference between an adequateblood supply and a shortage, saidGeoff Kaufmann of the North CentralRed Cross Blood Services region. We are asking eligible donors tomake appointments in the comingdays to reverse the downward trendin donations that we have seen thissummer.

With many donors busy or travel-ing and school out of session, dona-tions have dropped dramatically. Infact, during May and June 2011, whilethe need for blood products remainedsteady, donations were at the lowestlevel during this time frame in 12years. More recently extreme heatexperienced throughout the region

may be contributing to fewer dona-tions.

The Red Cross needs blooddonors now more than ever to rollup a sleeve and give as soon as pos-sible.

To show appreciation to those whohelp save lives near the upcomingLabor Day holiday (August 29 toSeptember 7), all presenting donorsat Red Cross blood drives and blooddonation centers in the North Centralregion will automatically be enteredfor a chance to win a $500 gas card. This is a part of the Red Cross sum-mer-long Good to Give.
