Brought to you by the Providence Senior High School’s Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) December 2017 Volume 30, Issue 2 Dear PHS Parents and Families: We are PROVIDENCE… This is our motto for the year. The first semester has gone very smoothly at school; we are only a few weeks away from mid-term or final exams. I’m so proud of the progress our students continue to make. They are working hard and I’m sure you would be very proud to see what I can see as I visit the classrooms each day. At school, we are continuing to focus on teaching literacy skills in every content area. We are working on reading closely, annotations, writing, being able to make a sound argument, finding evidence in the text, etc. These are the college and career-ready skills that students need to have before they graduate. We are embedding these learning experiences and working on literacy skills in English, science, social studies, and elective classes also. I’m excited to see how the students have grown in just one semester. As we have visits or receive emails from our recent graduates who are now in college, I have been eager to hear what skills were taught at Providence which are expected in college. Responsibility, organization, being able to read the text and discern the important details, as well as research and writing skills are the top ones. The junior paper (even though those words might strike anxiety in most 11th graders) has been a process we have heard was very helpful to our graduates in their first year in college. One student said she has written 5 junior papers her first semester in college. We know that there is always room for growth with our students and within our school. We will continue to work hard so the results continue to be noteworthy and the students reap the benefits of a strong, comprehensive high school education. There is no school quite like Providence High School. We are the best school in CMS and among the top in NC and the country. But, I want to highlight something else that makes our school special. The athletic, fine arts, and extra-curricular opportunities in which our students are involved create a full, comprehensive environment for students to develop leadership, teamwork, and other skills. This edition of the Paw Prints is full of recent honors, awards, and activities featuring our students. I hope you enjoy reading all about them. Thank you for sharing your children with us and thank you for helping us make our first semester a huge success. Go Panthers! Sincerely, Dr. Harrill

Dear PHS Parents and Families:

We are PROVIDENCE… This is our motto for the year.

Harrill

You Make a Difference!

You Make a Difference!

The PTSO is hard at work!

The PTSO has been busy funding a number of different initiatives for the 2017-2018 school year and working with some of our community partners to help raise funds. A purchase of two (2) Promethean Boards was made and installed in the school. The Staff Support Team provided all PHS staff members with a fun Bojangles’ Tailgate event in September, some spooky treats in October and a Harvest Breakfast in November. On October 16, the PTSO partnered with Panera Bread in the Arboretum to have a fundraising lunch after early dismissal. Response to the event was strong and approximately $143 was raised during the lunch. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported PHS that afternoon! Once again, PTSO has funded TurnItIn, the anti-plagiarism software used by students and staff at the school.

THANK YOU! YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Jana Emerick, PTSO President

Roars and Whispers is one of ten finalists for the National Scholastic Press Association's Cover Design of the Year. Winners were announced at the National Journalism Convention in Dallas in November and the Cover Design won first place in the country!

Designers are Emma Carter, senior, and Remy Lucien, 2017 graduate.

For the fourth year in a row, and the fifth time overall, Columbia Scholastic Press Association has named Roars and Whispers a Crown Finalist.

The Crown Awards honor top student publications chosen from CSPA’s members. Crowns are selected for overall excellence in a head-to-head comparison. During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing. A total of 1,100 publications were eligible for judging.

Crown Finalists are actual winners, not nominees. Some will be announced as Gold Crowns; the rest are Silver Crowns. Final results will be announced and presented at the CSPA ceremonies in March 2018.

This year has gotten off to a great start for German Club! We would like to start by giving a big thank you to all that have joined and donated to the club!

We began the year by giving the German I students Schultüten, which are goodie bags given to first graders in Germany. The bags were filled with candy, bubbles, and pencils for the students.

We then had our ice cream social at Sardis Park, which was our first event of the year. Dogs and students alike attended to eat ice cream, hang out, and play soccer and frisbee.

After the ice cream social, we had a very successful fundraising event at Qdoba in the Arboretum. Another big thank you to Qdoba, as well as all of you that came out and supported the club!

Soon after our Qdoba fundraiser, we had our first German Hour during National German Week. Most recently we celebrated Oktoberfest, which was two hours filled with fun, friends, and food. We would like to thank our gracious hosts for hosting these great events!

GERMAN CLUB UPDATE

On Wednesday, October 16 all 9th grade students participated in an Ice Breakers and Team Building event and attended a powerful High School Culture presentation put on by the Student Council. These events are designed to assist 9th graders in the transition to high school and help them meet other students and connect with some upperclassmen. The students enjoyed the activities and were treated to ice cream sandwiches during the ice breaker sessions by the PTSO! Thank you to the Student Council for organizing these important activities for the newest members of the PHS student body!

The choral department started the year strong with a joint concert with the orchestra department on Tuesday, October 17. The students enjoyed collaborating and creating music together! Nine choir students were selected to represent Providence at the CMS High School Honor Choir the weekend of October 20. They learned five extra pieces of music and worked with a wonderful conductor and students from all over the district to put together a great concert at East Mecklenburg High School. Congratulations to Caleb Babin, Eli Squier, David Scott, Tyler Weller, Leigh Millinder, Abbey Manley, Rachel Wilder, Erin Holtzapple and Megan Wrisley!

At PHS we are privileged to have Eagle Scout candidates search for potential projects on campus. During the summer one scout was busy improving the Theater Department.

Connor Ager of Troop 118 built a series of wooden, lockable, fire resistant cubbies that will be used by students of the Theater Department. The cubbies run along the hallway behind the stage. Along with family, friends and fellow scouts, many of whom attend Providence, the group built the cubbies off site over two work days in July. In August they installed the new cubbies and bolted them to the cement wall. They added rubber lining to protect the bottoms from mopping.

Connor is a dedicated scout and true friend of Providence. The project took months for CMS approval, but he persevered and satisfied every requirement. He said, “I would like the school to know that Scouts is a great organization [that is] active and useful in our community.” Thanks Connor for creating such a useful and aesthetically pleasing addition to the Theater Department!

If you attended a football game or soccer game this fall and entered the stadium through the Pass Holders Gate, you walked past the new brick columns at the entrance gate as well as the 100+ engraved bricks in the ground.

After 25 years, the stadium entrance is getting a fresh look. In addition to the columns, the revitalization includes a brick walkway and planting area. The 100+ engraved bricks flank this walkway as well as the concrete entrance to the stadium. The engraved bricks are part of an ongoing fundraiser for Providence Athletics. For more information on ordering a brick visit www.bricksrus.com/order/phsabc or use the link on the PHS Booster Club page at www.phsboosterclub.com.
