PRESIDENT’S REPORT It is with a sense of satisfaction that I provide on behalf of the Board and management, this Annual Report sharing with you our activities and successes in 2018. Our many achievements have been made possible by our selfless and hardworking players, volunteers, Board and staff, and the ongoing and generous support and goodwill of our members, sponsors, business partners and our local community.

It has now been three years since the merger of the Junior and Senior Clubs and we have continued to take on the challenges that continue to present themselves across a myriad of areas.

One of the first tasks of the 2018 Board was to review our Club Five Year Strategic Plan to ensure that our recent achievements were consolidated and built on and ensure that the plan for 2018-2022 remained relevant and achievable given the inevitable changes that come with time.

Your Board is keenly focused on our ‘Vision’ to make our club Australia’s leading community rugby club. With our revised Strategic Plan containing the Three Pillars for Success; Community, Sporting and Economic - we have focused on building a business plan which will enable our team to implement all of the various elements that have been identified under the Three Pillars, while continuing to follow sound operational and governance practices, that we are confident will deliver our Club’s long-term sustainability.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to extend a special thanks to our outstanding staff lead by CEO Matt Kaye. The team consistently goes ‘above and beyond’ in order to deliver the many facets of the Brothers Rugby and Touch programs both on and off the field. I would also like to thank Rugby Manager Ryan Schultz in his first year in this very challenging and multi-faceted role. Ryan also was the Head Coach of our Grand Final winning Colt 1 Team. The Board would also like to thank our Operations Manager Jason Neylon, Club Registrar Karen Nicholls, Administrator Leta Dempsey, Groundsman Al Anderson, Commercial Manager Giulia Coorey, and Bookkeepers Nicole Elder and Life Member Des Hogan. I’m sure you will all agree that this hardworking and cohesive team continue to deliver and go the extra mile for our players, members & supporters.

Thank you to Board Members Sean Hardman and Peter Bayo for their leadership of our Game Development Committee (Sporting Pillar). Their time and effort in driving our exhaustive end of year review of our Coaching and Rugby programs and assisting with the selection of our new Head Coach Rob Seib has placed us in a strong position to achieve even greater success in 2019.

I am grateful to Board Members Andrew Brodie and Helen Negri for their efforts working with our CEO Matt Kaye and his team on our Business Plan. These ‘where, what & how’ plans that sit under the Three Pillars provide us all with a clear and measurable aims and objectives that can be easily finessed as required in order to ensure we get to where we need to be.

I would also like to thank Andrew and Matt for their efforts in maintaining our QUT relationship. Our exclusive rugby partnership with QUT signed in late 2017 continues. However, QUT have undergone a recent review of their sports funding priorities and have made changes that have removed the funding support but will see a continuation of the agreed student sporting activities and cross functional student studies experiences and placement at Brothers. The agreement will be adjusted in order to enable our partnership to continue in 2019.

Thank you to our hardworking Club Treasurer Brenden Yantsch and the Audit and Risk Committee (Economic Pillar). The Club has reported an operating loss of $15,072. Unfortunately, due to the unexpected expenditure on building repairs ($16,000 Sponsors Deck) and the raising of provisions for staff long service leave has resulted in a downgrading after our forecasted budgeted surplus of $70,000 to a loss of $155,000. The Strategic Plan process has identified efficiencies and cost saving measures that will be implemented in the 2019 year. The club will also continue to review all day-to-day operating budgets in order to achieve improved cost efficiencies across the whole club.

As you may be aware, we commenced the design and planning for the proposed upgrade of our aging Crosby Park facilities in 2017 and these works have seen significant progress during 2018. I would like to thank our Upgrade & Infrastructure Development Committee Russell McCart, Dan Liddy and Matt Kaye for their tireless efforts over the past year. They have been ably assisted by Gallus Partners (John Shepherd) and Rowland’s

(Geoff Rodgers OAM) who have contributed their expertise and experience so that we are able to satisfy the requirements of related government grants applications (currently totalling more than $600,000) and proceed with the initial steps in our Brothers’ Masterplan Concept for Crosby Park.

We are now in a position to commence this exciting journey with the publication of our Community Engagement Communications. This communiqué outlines the various stages of the Club’s Masterplan Concept for Crosby Park, which we envisage will take approximately 24 months and will provide long-term benefit and sustainable outcomes for our players, members, supporters and local community. We value your input and I would encourage you all to ask questions and let us know what you think by going to our Project webpage which you will find on our new revamped Brothers Website. Please be assured, no member funds will be committed without wide consultation and a robust financial plan, which will be approved by the Board (based on recommendations from our Audit and Risk Sub-Committee).

We thank our many sponsors for their continued loyalty and generous support. Without this support we would not be able to provide the numerous programs that make our club a leader within the Brisbane competition. In particular I would like to thank Dwight Ferguson (Ray White Ascot), Faran Gouldson (Gouldson Legal), Glen Rohrig (Rohrig Builders), Chubb, FIIG, BBC Digital, and Audi Centre Brisbane, all who have made significant contributions throughout the year. We have over 30 sponsors and although there are too many to name individually, we thank you all and look forward to working with you all again in 2019. You’ll be pleased to learn that we have recently developed and distributed our Partnership/Value document, which highlights the increased offerings that are now available to our current and potential sponsors and business partners.

Thank you to Graeme Linklater, Helen Negri, who have helped lead our community involvement, charity engagement and communication strategy (Community Pillar). This has involved our Home Game Day offerings, major functions & events, and all of our communications touch points with members and supporters.

We continue to improve our communications with our website content achieving 1.8 million views since January 2018. We have seen encouraging 35% growth in on-line followers from 3,353 in 2017 to 5000 in 2018. With the introduction of our revamped website we intend to improve on all these engagement results by delivering content targeted at those interested in Men’s, Women’s and Junior Rugby, Girls and Boys Touch and our MRP Program.

Our Home Game Day offerings this year, which included our traditional Ladies Day, Old Boys Day and the introduction of a Family Fun Day and our very popular Kids Corner helped enhance the game day experience for all. We have recently conducted a Member Survey that provided us with valuable feedback on all aspects of our club game and community activities. This valuable feedback has been considered along with a thorough in-house review of our Home Game Day offering and our major events schedule in order to ensure we can better meet, not only critical financial goals, but also the expectations of our sponsors, players, members, and families. I am confident that we have locked in a great program of major events and Home Game Day offerings, that will deliver improved financial outcomes and increased support and attendances at all events.

Special thanks must go to; Tony Lalor and his team for putting together another successful and enjoyable Pre-Test Luncheon; to Matt and the Junior Age Coordinators for organising another a wonderful Junior Trophy Day; and to Dwight Ferguson, Paul McLean and Mark Stanton who continue to raise the bar in every respect at our Corporate Golf Day.

Hobbits Can Bar & Grill was again another major gathering and viewing enclave for our members and supporters to share old stories and renew long-time friendships on Home Game Day. I thank Monty Grainger and his hardworking team for making this all possible.

A special thanks to Stephen (Stumpy) Twist and Club Historian and Archivist Anthony (Macca) McDermott for their continued work on Stage 2 of the ongoing development of the Green Shed Upgrade Project by framing and displaying the jerseys and associated memorabilia graciously donated by our Members, in our Clubrooms.

Thanks to our Touch Coordinator Jodie Clarke for her outstanding work with the Touch Program, which has grown from 446 players in 2016 to 1281 players in 2018. The aim is to have as many young people playing touch in the ‘Butcher’s Stripes’ and with the Girls Touch Program now considered to be Australia’s largest all-girls touch competition after only just three years, the Boys Touch Program seeing amazing growth over the last

12 months, and the successful introduction of a Senior Elite Metro Program in 2018, which provides a clear pathway for our junior players to aspire to.

Thanks to Hamish Baird and all of our Junior Rugby Age Coordinators who by example, once again lead the junior rugby volunteer support base. Thanks, must also go to all the many parents and friends who willingly contributed their time and effort to fulfil the important roles as managers, coaches, field marshals, club officials, and a myriad of other roles throughout what was a very successful year.

The Brothers touring tradition continues and we are grateful to Randall Corless and his U12 Tour organising team for their very successful defense of the John Eales Shield in Mosman Rugby Club in Sydney earlier this year. This is now the fourth year we have conducted this tour. I would also like to thank David Clark and his organising team for a very successful U13 September NZ Tour.

We now can proudly espouse that Brothers is the largest community rugby club in Australia. We continue to enjoy overall growth in player numbers of 25+% to reach a quite remarkable 2,795 players. This amazing total is shared across Colts, Senior Grades and Women (309), Junior Grades (670), MRP (28), Little Bros (84), Girls and Boys Touch (1281), Junior Rugby 7’s (320), Senior Men’s and Women’s Metro Touch (103). Other numbers of interest include; 34 Life Members, 783 Volunteer Members and 298 Financial Members. It is our intention with your help to increase the number of Financial Members by implementing a membership drive in 2019

It is so pleasing to see that over the past several years this overall increase in our player numbers has resulted in record appearances in Brisbane Finals and Grand Finals. You can be assured that we will continue to focus our efforts on retaining and growing our rugby player base, and in particular, our female participation via our development and participation programs.

“Eight Grand Finals, One Club” - what a great tag line! Our fantastic achievements in 2018 were definitely built on the back of our very solid 2017 season. I congratulate outgoing Head Coach Carl Marshall and our Grades & Colts Coaching and Support staff for their unselfish and professional efforts during the year. Our most significant achievement was winning the Brisbane Club Championship for the first time since 1996. The ‘Doughty Shield” is now proudly displayed in the Club Foyer and I know it is everyone’s intention to retain this shield in 2019 and keep “Hector” at home. Our on-field achievements across the Colts and Grades were historic, winning four Grand Finals. The margin of our Second Grade’s win was truly memorable. We again had all Colt teams represented in the Finals with three teams progressing through to the Grand Finals. Our Colts 3 narrowly lost with Colts 1 and 2 winning their respective Grand Finals, which meant that we narrowly missed out on winning the Colts Division ‘Triple Crown’. We are in admiration of our all our grade players, coaches, managers, volunteers and families, without your dedication, hard work and support our successes would not have be realised In 2018.

What I was most impressed with over that wonderful weekend of ‘grassroots rugby’ in late August at the hallowed turf of Ballymore was the behaviour and efforts of all nine teams, their support staff and our many loyal and enthusiastic supporters. Their efforts and behaviour exemplified our very tangible and combined commitment to the ‘Brothers Way’, regardless of the result.

I would like to make a special mention of the Player Leadership Group led by our outgoing Club Captain Dan Liddy. It has been a great pleasure to work with Dan both in his role as Club Captain and as our resident architect involved in our Crosby Park Masterplan Concept. Dan has provided the Board with a very valuable ‘thermometer read’ on how our senior players are coping with what is a very long and demanding season. Dan has consistently displayed a strength and common sense approach to his role and he has lead his player leadership team with grace and integrity. I’m sure he will continue along with our other leading players to protect our Club’s culture and values.

I congratulate all 40+ club representative players across both our rugby and touch programs: These players represented at regional, state, national and international levels with distinction. In particular I would like to recognise our Australian Rugby representatives Taniela Tupou (Wallaby), Jeral Skelton (Australian Sevens), Lawson Creighton, Fraser McReight (Australian U20 Player of the Year), Michael Wood, Matt Faessler & Harry Hoopert (Junior Wallabies). Touch players, Maikki Watego, Kim Sue See, Tamika Upton (Australian Women’s Open), Kat Stevens (Australian Mixed Open), Tim Glazebrook (Australian Men’s Open) and Mel Wilks, Hagiga

Mosby, Kobe Nona & Darnell Bennett (Australian Youth Team). Most recently we have had 10 rugby players named in the Australian U20’s. What fantastic achievements by all!

We congratulate three new Centurions Dallan Murphy, Luke Beauchamp and Jennifer Gillett (our first female centurion) for reaching the significant player ‘milestone ‘of 100 Premier Grade games for the Club.

Congratulations to U14 Silver Team who made it to the Brisbane Junior Rugby Competition Grand Final. The under-age divisions enjoyed another strong and enjoyable year. Thanks to all coaches, managers, volunteers, players and families for their support throughout the year. Our coaching program is reaching across all ages and will continue to be enhanced next year. We pride ourselves on being a truly “grass roots” club that has clear pathway from Little Bros (4-5years) through Junior Grades, Colts and Senior Grades up to Premier Grade.

I would like to personally thank Mark Stanton who coordinated the Past Presidents’ Group meetings. The cultural guidance and counsel provided throughout this year by Paul McLean MBE (Rugby Australia Board Member), Tony Shaw (ARU President), Dennis Croft, Dick McGruther OBE and Hans Pearson has been invaluable to the Board, Matt and in particular me.

I would like to add a special thanks to Hans and Dimity Pearson for their most recent endeavours that involve the production of video material that capture our club’s past ten years to the present. This video resource will be of great value for use in government grant applications, club promotions and as another great piece of visual record of our Club’s long and proud history.

Our Brothers’ Family continue to hold Alex Clarke and his family in our thoughts. I would like to take opportunity to thank all that gave so generously to Alex - one of our own – a student at Nudgee College and a Brothers Junior player who sustained a serious spinal injury in early August this year. I’m sure I speak for all when I wish Alex and his family every encouragement as Alex continues his journey of recovery. Brothers continues to raise funds for Alex and we ask if you haven’t as yet had an opportunity to contribute to Alex’s recovery please go to the “Be Strong Alex” site and make a donation, big or small it will be gratefully received by the Clarke family.

Finally, I thank all Life Members, Perpetual and Foundation Members, members, volunteers, players, friends and family for yet another wonderful year and I can assure all members that the Board and staff take our roles and responsibilities seriously and are all fully committed to the ethical and moral stewardship of our great and historic “Family Club”.

TREASURER’S REPORT I am pleased to present the audited financial statements and Treasurer’s Report of the club for the year ended

31 October 2018. It has been a mixed year for the club with on field success and expansion of the clubs

programs producing an increase in the scale of both incomes and expenditures.

Financial summary - The key financial information in relation to the 2018 financial year are as follows:

• Net loss after depreciation and abnormal items $88,905 (2017 profit $1,768)

• Operating loss before depreciation and abnormal items $15,072 (2017 profit $71,311)

• Based on the club’s Strategic Plan, the club has identified three pillars for success, upon which the

club’s performance will be measured. These pillars have been incorporated into the 2018 accounts with

the presentation of incomes and expenditures categorised as Sporting, Community and Economic.

• Total income 10% $1,980,473 [2017 $1,788,099]

- Player registrations – decreased mainly from a decline in junior player numbers

- Little Bros, Holiday Clinics, Touch and 7’s all increased with greater participation and player

numbers across all these programs

- Events – was substantially less than 2017 due to the absence of the Australian Rugby

Championships, the Corporate Test Lunch being fewer numbers than the prior year, and the

absence of one major event with the Long Lunch in October being postponed.

- Function centre and Rent, increased as greater focus was applied to function operations

- Investment Income & Southside Bingo – decrease in passive income streams influenced

primarily by a decrease in SSB income as they were disrupted by their major redevelopment

• Total expenses 16% $1,995,544, [2017 $1,716,787]

- Expenditures were impacted by both budgeted and unbudgeted items

- Budgeted items included - $65k

▪ additional Administration wage to support Sponsorships and Grant applications

▪ director of Rugby role increasing from part time in 2017 to full time in 2018

- Unbudgeted items included $55k

▪ Addition of Long Service Leave provisions for 2 employees attaining 7 years of

service, for which no previous accrual had been raised

▪ repairs to sponsors deck

• The focus for the 2018 year was the identification of administration efficiencies and establishment of

economies of scale with the expansion of the 7’s and touch programs. These efficiencies were

identified and implemented as part of the club’s review of its strategic plan and planning for 2019.

These were identified too late to have an impact on the 2018 trading results.

• The focus for 2019 is the continued identification of cost savings and efficiencies and providing support

to the upgrade and infrastructure subcommittee to fund any preliminary costs.

Conclusion

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Matt Kaye and all BRC staff for their efforts. In particular I would like

to thank Nicole Elder and Des Hogan who have worked tirelessly in assisting the club. I would also like to thank

the Management Committee, club sponsors, club volunteers, players, coaches, members and supporters for

their contributions to the club during 2018.

Dave Dunworth, as president of the rugby club and licensed club in the mid-90s, Bill Andrews, John Diamond, Roger Herring, Peter Lavin and Ron Ure went to extra lengths. They put in additional thousands, well aware the money would not be repaid and would be eventually written off. The assistance was on all fronts in those tough years.

The licensed club had gone from benefactor to burden. There was considerable anguish over whether to close or not. No one wanted to be the man to shut the doors. One-time flyhalf Andrews, a lawyer, was the licensed club chairman through the late ‘90s when that tough decision was forced on the club. A provisional administrator was appointed in September 1999 and on November 19, 2000, the licensed club ceased operation. Bill Andrews, Des Hogan and a few others shared a final beer. They served themselves.” The Club’s Management Committee unanimously supported Bill’s nomination and referred it to a representative group of current Life Members for ratification and approval. Brothers would like to congratulate a truly deserving Clubman on his nomination and acceptance of Life Membership of the Club, well done Bill.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT 2018 has certainly been a year of many highs & lows as we continue to grow, we face more and more challenges to ensure we stay at the forefront of the rugby landscape. While our on field success is one, we can be very proud of, off field we are constantly challenged to provide an improved experience for our players, parents, members and the community. We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to provide a ‘Community Social Hub’ where people feel safe and can enjoy an all the benefits of being involved in your local community club.

With the election of a new President & Board at the 2017 Annual General Meeting the club has gone through a significant review of its strategic direction and subsequent development of a detailed business plan. The development of a sound business plan has been a priority to ensure our direction is consistent with the boards vision for the future of the club. We have aligned all aspects of our operations with the three pillars; Sporting, Economic and Community.

I believe a sound business plan model will provide the organisation with a structured direction and accountability to ensure we stay at the forefront of the Australian Rugby landscape. The business plan is a fluid and evolving document allowing slight adjustments to the staffs focus.

SPORTING

The senior clubs on field performances in winning the Doughty Shield (Club Championship) has been many years in the making. A strong recruitment strategy, high quality coaching staff, a determined leadership group and a successful culture that is the envy of all other clubs is the framework behind this success. A huge congratulations to all players, coaches/managers and volunteers to have contributed to this throughout 2018 and previous years. It is often difficult to manage a program of this size and ensure that all players are playing adequate game time, however it is one that netted the club 6 minor premierships and 4 Premierships.

A thorough review of the junior program in 2018 will see a number of small adjustments heading into the new year. Despite a drop in XV a side rugby, our boys and girls Sevens programs continue to grow. Greater emphasis on resourcing the junior club in 2019 will see better coaching standards across the board, greater integration between the junior & senior players and improved communication channels from the club to coaches, managers and parents.

Our Women’s team continues to improve and are quickly becoming a team that will challenge the competitions best in the very near future. Special mention to stalwart Jenny Gillett who this year become the clubs first female centurion some 22 years after her club debut. Its exciting times ahead for the Women’s program with many of our young players being selected in junior representative programs and growth of our Sevens programs.

I would like to congratulate all Brothers players who gained selection at Super Rugby franchises, Brisbane City and Queensland Country NRC & URC players, Australian Schoolboys, Queensland Schoolboys and Junior Representative teams. This continues to prove that the Brothers Rugby program is one of the best in Australia.

Our Brothers Touch program continues to grow at a rapid rate. With now over 1200 players each year the challenge of providing suitable competition structures is becoming a difficult one. Our Junior competitions for both boys and girls provide a competitive but fun environment for players to enjoy the game. We are working hard to provide a pathway for our junior players through entry into Junior State Cup and supporting school programs and the Met North region.

The formation of the Senior Metro Cup program is a significant milestone for such a new association. Brothers entered six teams in the Queensland Premier Touch Competition (Metro Cup) which now provides a pathway for our hundreds of juniors to continue playing open age touch football. Our Premier Women’s team progressed through to the finals which was an outstanding achievement in their first year playing as Brothers.

I would like to congratulate all Brothers players who gained selection in Australian teams, Elite 8 Premiership teams, Queensland State of Origin, Brisbane Cobras, Met North and Junior State Cup. Also, a big thank you to all the volunteer coaches, managers and referees who support the Brothers Touch Association program.

CLUB FACILITIES & OPERATIONS

2018 season began with Brothers successful in securing a small federal government grant to assist installation of new unisex shower/ change room. With the increase in female involvement within the club (Women’s teams, Sevens and Girls touch), this now allows a specific shower and change room amenities for females that can be locked off from the main change rooms.

A large unexpected expense this year, was the repair of the framework and supports for the sponsor deck outside of the gym. Damage caused by white ants (termites) deemed the deck unsafe and immediate works were required. The deck has now been inspected by structural engineers and deemed safe for use by sponsors and spectators. Special thanks to Tony Davis from Anchor Building Services for undertaking both upgrades for the club.

Also, as a request from members additional aluminium bench seating were added to the concrete pad up at the can bar. This now gives an excellent seated viewing platform to which to watch the games from for all our members and guests.

All bar and canteen sales maintained a sound trade throughout the 2018 season, with the continuation of junior clubhouse and BBQ operation during senior home matches. A big thanks goes out to the Hobbits, the New Crew and our junior club canteen supervisors and staff (Windsor Park and Crosby Park) who once again operated and run the bars and canteens seamlessly throughout the season. The club’s popularity of craft beer has continued to grow at Brothers, with large spikes in sales for the Green Beacon product at functions, events and home games. Brothers will continue the relationship with Green Beacon Brewery into 2019 and beyond and have added the annual running of the Green Beacon Cup against Norths each year to the calendar of events.

We will continue to listen to our members feedback to ensure we are providing a high quality experience at both training and games. We still face a number of challenges including merchandise, point of sales, volunteers and greater engagement from the wider Brothers community. We hope to slightly refine our offering for 2019 to ensure we continue to stay ahead of the game.

I would like to thank the Club Sponsors for their support throughout the year, your investment in the club has assisted in the improved culture and environment at Brothers. We will continue to work hard in 2019 to provide a good offering to Sponsors where they can see brand exposure and business support from our members. Special thanks to Co Major Partners Faran Gouldson and Dwight & Tonja Ferguson for your on-going support.

COMMUNITY

The club continues to invest considerable funding into the facility to provide a place that the community, sponsors, supporters, players and parents can be proud of. We are excited about the Club’s Master Plan for Crosby Park which will come to life over the coming years.

Thanks to the Clubs staff whom have all worked above and beyond their duties this year. Full time staff Ryan Schultz, Jason Neylon, Karen Nichols, Alan Anderson and part time staff Leta Dempsey, Nicole Elder, Jodie Clarke, Giulia Coorey and Kelevi Tuicolo have tirelessly worked to provide the best possible program for the Brothers community. Also, our volunteers across the club, thank you for your continued support of the club. Special thank you to Des Hogan, Michael Spork, Hamish Baird, Age Group Coordinators, Hobbits, Coaches, Team Managers and Crosby Park set up crews.

Finally, to the Brothers Rugby Club Board led by David Hine thank you for providing the direction and guidance throughout the year. You should be proud of your achievements in creating what is Australia’s largest community rugby club.

RUGBY MANAGER’S REPORT 2018 was another very successful year for Brothers Rugby Club both on and off the field. The overall rugby program that includes senior rugby, junior rugby, women’s rugby and sevens continues to grow from strength to strength and the results of 2018 is a credit to the hard work of the loyal servants the continue to serve the club. Junior Rugby The participation within the junior program was again a strength of the club with over forty teams competing in the Brisbane Junior Rugby Union competitions. The season began with skill development sessions for each group that were conducted from both the premier grade squad and elite development program players. These commitments are very beneficial for all involved as it gives a chance for both junior and senior players to integrate. Continuing on from previous years’ work a skill development plan and program frameworks/philosophies were provided to coaches to assist them throughout the year. Our U12’s to U14’s all competed well throughout the year which resulted in three of the team making finals, with U14 Silver making the Grand Final. A significant review process was conducted at the end of the season to ensure the program continues to develop in 2019. There are many new initiatives looking to be implemented in 2019 that will benefit both coach and player development. Senior Rugby The senior rugby program had a hugely successful year that included huge participation and also outstanding on field results. Brothers were the only club in the Brisbane competition to field sevens senior teams and four colts’ teams. The depth in playing talent and consistency in program delivery resulted in Brothers winning the Doughty Shield (club championship) for the first time in 22 years, six minor premierships, eight of out nine grades competing in grand finals and four premierships. These results ensured that many players were honoured with representative duties that included five Australian U20 representatives, five NRC representatives and ten URC U19 representatives. Brothers Rugby Club also now has eleven players in the 2019 Australian 20’s squad and Reds Academy, making up 20% of the total number of players. These outstanding results could not have happened without the tireless work of our coaches and support staff who worked professionally throughout the year. Our Premier Grade had a disappointing season and finished in seventh place. As a result, a thorough review process was conducted, and both strengths and weaknesses of the program highlighted. Even though results were not what was expected there were many positives outcomes from the season including the blooding of a number of younger players and great character shown from the playing group towards the end of the season which saw them win against top four teams including Souths. The Colts Program continues to be a strength of the senior program and for the second year in a row all three teams made grand finals. These outcomes were a result of the great work done in previous years and the philosophy the club applies to its Colts program. We had ninety-seven registered Colts players which allowed us to be able to field four teams into the three colts’ competitions. With fifty-one of those players eligible to return next year the 2019 also looks promising. Women’s Rugby 2018 saw the second year of the women’s program after a significant break from club. A lot more effort was put into the recruitment of players and ensuring the game was available to a large group of players. There was a significant improvement in results from last years season which resulted in the girls earning a finals spot after finishing in 4th place. Unfortunately, due injuries and other sporting commitments, we were not able to field a team for this game.

Page 20: BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2018...BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2018 4 2017 AGM Minutes & Attendee Register ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – MINUTES WEDNESDAY 6TH DECEMBER 2017

The highlight of the season was a return of Jen Gillett to the playing field which resulted her in getting her 100th game. This was a huge achievement for not only her but the club, as the game was promoted through FoxSports. Other outstanding achievements included Toa Filimoehala being selected into the Wallaroo’s squad and Natahlia Moors (2017 player) being selected into the All Black Ferns team to player France. There was also significant effort in creating a pathway for junior girls into our women’s XV’s program. This included assisting schools with the development of both their coaches and programs. Throughout the year Brothers had involvement with both Mt Alvernia College and All Hallows School. We were also able to field two teams into the BJRU sevens competition. Elite Development Program The EDP has been the backbone of Brothers Rugby with both the recruitment and development of players over the last few years. There was a renewed focus to better the EDP Program and 2018 which resulted in the implementation of a Performance Camp and many other initiatives. The EDP gave the opportunity to nineteen players to develop themselves both on and off the field which resulted in four of the players making their premier grade debut and eight others earning selection into URC U19’s representative squads. There has been a lot of on field highlights throughout the year, but these have been solidified by the great work done off the field with our leadership group and social planning. Dan Liddy as club captain again was a loyal servant and a key influencer of the playing group. His work in ensuring the players can have an enjoyable but behaved time away the field has been instrumental in developing our strong culture. The integration of seniors and juniors is something that can continually be developed but there were some great highlights throughout the year of this, including coaching development sessions and also the junior trophy day. 2018 was a great year for the rugby program and I look forward to building and bettering it in 2019. These results could not have occurred without the support of Matt Kaye, David Hine, Board Members, BRC Staff and all the devoted volunteers that gives so much to our great club.

MODIFIED RUGBY PROGRAM (MRP)

2018 was another fantastic year for the MRP at Brothers. The MRP is a world first, modified form of touch only rugby where each girls, boy or young adult with a learning and perceptual disability (MRP Players) has their own club PlayerMentor on the field supporting them. The MRP aims to move girls, boys and young adults with learning and perceptual disabilities off the sidelines and into the main game. Through the GingerCloud Leadership Program, PlayerMentors are nurtured and supported as they develop into a generation of young people for whom disability is normalised. The MRP was created by GingerCloud Foundation (whose co-founders are a family from Brothers Megan and Anthony Elliott) with the support of the QRU and the ARU and was piloted at Brothers in 2014 with 16 participants. In 2018, there are now more than 250 participants across 9 Clubs and 3 divisions across Qld and in 2019 the first interstate team will be launched in Canberra. In 2018, Brothers hosted 7 teams across the 3 MRP divisions – the original form of the MRP where each MRP Player aged between 7 and 13 years is matched with their own teenage PlayerMentor, MRP 7s which is a development pathway for MRP participants and the expansion of the MRP Colts program. The MRP Colts division was specifically designed to engage young adults with learning and perceptual disabilities aged 14-18 years of age to get involved in rugby. These young adults are matched with university aged PlayerMentors 18 – 24 who will support them both on and off the field. The inaugural Brothers MRP Colts team was a great success with plans to expand the number of participants in 2019. A highlight of the 2018 MRP season at Brothers was hosting the Brisbane PlayerMentor Leadership Evening which attracted more 75 PlayerMentors and their families to Crosby Road. The evening featured a panel of leaders from the MRP Community speaking about the importance of resilience. The panel was rounded out by MRP Ambassador Nathan Sharpe who then also conducted an on the field coaching experience for the PlayerMentors. In an acknowledgement of the MRP’s positive impact in driving social inclusion in September GingerCloud’s MRP was awarded the 2018 Play by the Rules Award which recognises organisations that help make sport more fair, safe and inclusive. Brothers will also be hosting the inaugural Modified Rugby Showcase powered by Classic Wallabies on Saturday 9 February at Crosby Road. This event will feature a junior coaching clinic hosted by Classic Wallabies, MRP, MRP 7s and MRP Colts Exhibition matches, the Classic Wallaroos and the Classic Wallabies. What will make this event unique is the amazing chance for women and men passionate about rugby to bid for a spot to play as a Classic Wallaroo or Classic Wallaby for the day.

VALE EPI BOLAWAGATABU, QRU NO. 802 The Queensland Rugby community is mourning the passing of legendary Reds and Fijian Flanker Epi Bola who passed away last week. Epi attended Lelean Fiji Memorial School, before making the move to Brisbane in the early 1960s. One early report read: “The new Flanker was very tough Fijian Epi Bolawagatabu, a 27-year-old dentistry student, known locally simply as Epi Bola, who started out with University but was happier playing for Brothers. He had many fierce club duels with Jules Guerassimoff and became a popular figure with local supporters”. He was part of the 1966 A Grade Premiership winning Brothers team, captained by Dallas O’Neill, in his second year with the Club, before receiving his call-up to Ballymore and would also play in the 1968 A Grade Premiership winning Brothers team, captained by Barry Honan. Epi debuted for Queensland against Ireland at Lang Park, 1967 and played in the first interstate game at Ballymore the same year. He played 8 representative matches for Queensland including caps against New South Wales, Victoria and New Zealand, between 1967 and 1968. Once he graduated from Dentistry studies, Epi relocated to Rockhampton and connected with Rocky Brothers where he “… brought the crowds through his running style of rugby … he was a wonderful ambassador and player who led by example” (Rocky Brothers History, 2015). Epi Bola played for Army in Townsville but, on principle, did not play against Brothers. He played for Queensland Country in 1972 in Townsville and went on to be selected for Queensland Barbarians. Epi continued his involvement as the Patron of the Cairns Brothers up until he passed away. He also captained and coached Fiji, played for Australian Army and Australian Services, played for Queensland and Queensland Country. A beloved and influential name in Queensland Rugby, particularly in the North, Epi Bola will be sadly missed.

NEW PERPETUAL TROPHY The Brigid Felsman Trophy For outstanding service and/or achievement by a female Administrator, team Official, player or team for the benefit of the Club (2018) This trophy was named in honour of Brigid Felsman (Life Member, Administrator and team Official) for her service to Brothers Junior Rugby Union Club and its preceding entities. Brigid began her association with the Ascot Clayfield Junior Rugby Union Club in 1984 when her youngest son Sean began playing for the Junior Club and from 1985 her involvement began to increase. From 1985 to 1990, Brigid served as the Club’s Hon. Secretary, Delegate to the QJRU and Editor of the Club Newsletter as well as being active with the Ladies Auxiliary and managing teams. CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT The 2018 season has come to a close and it’s safe to say it has been an outstanding one. 2017 saw us set the bar high, and this year we welcomed the opportunity to not only meet it but raise it again. The list of broken records & memorable achievements is extensive to say the least. For the first time in 22 years - the club has claimed the Doughty Shield – an incredible feat achieved in part through: • 6 minor premierships - a first in the clubs extensive 113 year history • 10 finals series - another first for the club • And of course, for the second year in a row; 8 grand final teams. Special congratulations to 2nd Grade, 5th Grade, Colts 1 and Colts 2. Well done boys, you’ve achieved the ultimate through hard fought campaigns and impressive seasons overall, a well-deserved notch on the belt. Clearly, 2018 has seen us solidify our title as the greatest club in the country, both on and off the field. Our culture and values are the strongest they’ve ever been, and we exemplify it in every aspect of the game. We are a united Rugby Club – where a player of any age, size, gender or ability can experience their whole rugby journey all at one place, all for the same glorious reasons, and all while wearing the blue and white stripes. Put simply - whilst we are many things; the family club, the butcher boys, and the Brethren. Above all, we are the club that all others want to be, and the club that all others hate because they aren’t. And that’s something that always has and will always continue to make me very proud. As a senior grades group, I feel this has been the year of enjoyment. People have been asking me recently why we have done so well and achieved what we have - my reply is always that we are a winning club, because we are a happy one. We have become a single entity where the grade you are in means nothing more than the time slot you play on a weekend. The year has been spent training together, winning together and celebrating together - we all play the game for the same reasons and it’s in recognizing that that we have become as strong as we are. Of course - the depth this year has formed, and the healthy competition it has sparked has been so important – it will continue to push the club to even greater heights – from seventh grade through to prems. Particular mention must go to the Colts group, who this year have not only consistently fielded 4 teams - but have asserted a dominance over the competition that this club has not seen in a long time. Week in week out you have proven yourself to be a talented, passionate, and enthusiastic bunch whose involvement and love for the club puts a smile on the face of us old fellas - we look forward to seeing this develop over the years to come. For the second year running, the blue and white has been privileged with a senior women’s team full of hard working, passionate players. The commitment you all have shown to your teammates, your performance and your club is incredible, and is a great sign for the success we will continue to see. Of course, our junior and touch programs - the ever-growing lifeblood of the club - is as strong as ever. Every day we see more and more young and enthusiastic players join our ranks; all ready to start their brother / sister’s journeys and quickly develop their passion for the game we all love. Special mention must be given to the parents, family members, volunteers and supporters for these aspiring young players - their enthusiasm is only matched by your dedication and constant efforts. Congratulations must go to our newest club centurions - Beachy, Dal and Jen. 100 games in the blue and white is an achievement in itself, but the fact that they have all been for the 1st XV Grade is nothing short of legendary. You have reached a point most of us will only dream about, and it’s just a testament to you all as true club players - something you should all be incredibly proud of. This year and all the achievements it’s brought would not have been possible without the tireless work of so many people. Thank you to the Coaches and Managers who have done the hard yards and the extras all year - you have all been influential in the dominant season we celebrate tonight. Thank you to the medical Staff for your efforts in keeping us on the field and in one piece.

To our hundreds of Volunteers, as always you have gone above and beyond for this club and it’s something, we all greatly appreciate. There are so many who deserve special mention; John Sayer, Stokesy, Macca, the hobbits, Des, Michael Spork, Hamish Baird, JD & Sandy to name a few. You all exemplify the culture of this great club in your tireless efforts and selfless actions - and for that we thank you. Thank you for the financial supports and investments put in generously from our sponsors. It is vital and something that cannot be more appreciated. Thank you to Dave, Matt, Schultzy, the board and the rest of the club staff for all you have sacrificed and achieved this year. The tireless work you do is always behind the scenes, but it is the foundation which keeps the club stable. I want to quickly thank our three stalwart retirees - Gendy, AB & Dal. On behalf of the club and those who have had the chance to train, play, and drink beside you - it’s been an honour and a privilege. You have given your all for this club and have all achieved incredible things within it. The rest is truly well deserved - Cheers fellas. And of course, thank you to the leadership group: Sword, Beachy, Reubs, Gus, Webby, Bailey, Harves, Oosh, Isaac, Dora and Pat. Your support this year has been endless, and I can thank you enough for all the sacrifices and efforts you’ve made. I consider myself very lucky to have Brothers; a second home, an extended family and a place that allows me to play the game I love with my mates. So finally, I want to say thank you to you all as its members - your commitment and enthusiasm to this club is second to none. Put simply we are a vast and diverse community united by blue and white – a force that will see this era of on and off field success last long into the future. This is my last club captain Report as I step down from the role and allow the next in line to make their mark. It’s been an honour and a privilege to represent you all these past two years - I couldn't be prouder of everything this club and its members have achieved in that time, and I just count myself lucky for having been able to be along for the ride. Thanks to you all, and as always - up the Brethren.

What a season! With a group of 62 players taking the field including an astounding 44 starters, this group demonstrated resilience & determination to achieve the team goal. A brilliant blend of seasoned campaigners & next generational players, these men were able to complete the regular season with a 15/1 win-loss record & finish 15 points clear of 2nd place. Whilst in his first official year as a grade’s player, Reuben Wall admirably lead as Captain & with the support of Nathanuel Gendle, Dan Liddy, & Dallan Murphy, approached the finals series with a relaxed yet focused approach to ‘finish the job’. After comfortably accounting for Wests 36-17 in the Major Semi & earning a Grand Final berth, they certainly saved their best for last! A first half clinic of running rugby & skilful interchange play saw the team go into halftime 49-0 yet far from finished with the toothless Tigers. Closing out the game 68-7, the close mateship amongst the group was evident, none more so than the celebrations of seeing ‘AB’ convert a late try. Grand Final Day also saw the decorated playing careers of club stalwarts Nathanuel Gendle, Dallan Murphy, & Adam Bennie come to a close. Whilst the club will be poorer with the collective experience of 449 A Grade games being lost, their contributions will be fondly remembered for generations. Congratulations must also go to the recipients of the team awards, very well deserved! Reuben Wall (Best Player), Jake Lyon (Best Forward), Nathanuel Gendle (Best Back), & Michael Gilbert (Brothers Medal). Finally, I’d like to thank coaches Manny Cole-Manolis & Drew Vautin, along with Team Manager Gavin Hosking for their collaborative efforts & support throughout the year. Thank you for another enjoyable season.

Season 2018 started with a real sense of purpose to continue to improve on the skill base and game plans of the group to produce a really attractive and disciplined brand of footy with a young group of players Round 1 again was highly successful for us as we were undefeated and sitting on top of the table and where clear front runners, during this we had some tremendous wins and a real test of character to get a tight win at Sunny bank against a

With some real leadership form within the group to keep them focused on the prize moving into round 2 from the likes of Giles Beveridge, Blaise Hartley, Noah Nielsen, Will Wilson and Aiden Cairns, we also lost Bon Maui early in the season to a serious knee injury that untimely forced Bon and his family to move temporality back to New Zealand Round 2 as always is a real test of character as we are hit by injuries and have to call on our depth at the club to get us home in the back end. We set the task for the players to try and achieve a perfect season and we knew that our real test would come against Sunny bank at home and boy did they turn up it was a tight clash between 2 really good footy sides and as it pains me to say they got the chocolate 14-12. We finished the season right with only the1 loss and we were the dominated side during the season with most win and best point’s difference. With a few weeks to go we lost Giles Beveridge to an overseas adventure Finals footy is without a doubt the most exciting time of the year with all the hard work completed during the season ready to bare fruit. We had a mixed campaign we lost the Major Semi to Sunny bank in week 1 and put in a polished performance to beat East in the Preliminary Final. As always you need to perform at your beast and have a lot of luck to win a grand final and ultimately, we fell close to a very strong and committed Sunny bank team on the day. As coaches we are really proud of the effort from the group this year, we did not get the ultimate reward for the season as we continue to develop the young guys out of colts into the grade we will continue to have a success grade program at Brothers again this year we unearthed some talent for the years ahead as well a few old heads have returned to offer the knowledge and skill to the younger group as reflected in the grades. Want to thank a group of special young men that played 3rd grade this year and helped us achieve something special this year as a group whilst setting the highest standards of self-discipline on and off the field that I have seen in a long time Really proud of the performance of all grades this year and the efforts put in by all Coaches, managers and the players. We continued to build and develop the skills base of all players within the grades and it showed in our results for all grades. The commitment from all the coaching staff to improve skill of all players was especially pleasing to see. A special thanks to the group of coaches and staff that have allowed us all to improve during the year John Gabbett, Andrew Clough, James O’Connell and club stalwart John Diamond whose commitment and support have been invaluable also to club S&C Jonno Roussetos for his assistance in helping maintain the fitness of the group As we look forward to another off season, we will start to plan for what will be another successful season in 2019 for the Grades.

If preseason was anything to go by at the start of 2018, it was obvious how hungry 4th grade was to go one better than the year previous, after a tough Grand Final loss. As fellow coach Pete Williams and I put the boys through their paces before the regular season kicked, you could tell how hard everyone had been working in the offseason to hit the ground running. With the start of the season under way, 4th Grade recorded three satisfying wins in the first three games against GPS, University and Easts. Against three teams that have a history of good performance in 4th Grade, it was with a lot of momentum that we came up against a Souths team that had a stranglehold on the competition the previous seasons.

It was clear against Souths that they were going to be the team to beat all year. Losing 43 to 12, the game felt a lot closer than the scoreline showed. Two five-minute periods either side of halftime allowed Souths to score 5 tries, most of them from their own half. The rest of the game was a lot more even, but it came to show that we weren’t playing out the 70 minutes as required. The next three weeks included two byes, which gave us a chance to focus on what needed to be fixed. In between the two bye, we travelled to Sunnybank and recorded a resounding 52 to 12 win, where we showed that the hard work was starting to pay off, even against a team below our standard. A week later had us going up against a strong Norths team who had us against the ropes at 14 to 12 with 15 minutes to go. From this point, the boys showed the ticker we’d been waiting for to score three tries to end the game and finish with a bonus point. Two more weeks of strong showings provided victories against Wests and GPS but a very flat performance against University showed we still didn’t have the consistency required to challenge for the premiership. A quick bounce-back against Easts led to our best victory of the regular season against Souths. After the loss in the first round, this time we showed that we could play for 70 minutes and held Souths out for the last 5 minutes in our 22 to win 24 to 19. The end of the season came with two victories and a loss, but all three games showed that we had the heart leading into the finals but just needed to fine tune our game. The Major Semi against Souths again showed that we were still lacking the poise to challenge, but with another chance in the Preliminary Final against Norths, we knew what had to be done the following week. What followed was our strongest game of the year. Taking Norths to the cleaners and winning 40 to nil. Every aspect of our game was on song, running in tries from set piece and counter attack but finishing the game without letting Norths score was the highlight. Grand Final week was soon upon us with Pete and myself just as excited and nervous as the boys. It came to game day and again, Souths showed why they were such a tough team to beat. Not giving an inch, we took it to them all game but couldn’t break them down enough to get within striking distance. They scored tries either side of halftime again, which proved to be the difference as we went down 19 to 5. After having so many boys come through our team this year and perform so strongly, it was very hard to decide on our awards. After many discussions, Pete and I awarded Best Forward to Luke Johnston, Best Back to Oliver Fison, Best Player to Sam Russel and the Brothers Medal to Robin Kok. Pete and I would like to send a big thank you to Sandy for her help as manger throughout the year. We had a couple of captains throughout the year, but they all played a big part so another thank you to Ben Boquest, Luke Johnston, Jordan Swepson, James Colwell and Robin Kok. Greg Beaver and John Gabbett were also influential during the season as training partners. Lastly, I can’t say a big enough thank you to every player who pulled on a jersey for us. There were a number of you throughout the year, but you all made me proud and you helped me develop a lot as a coach. Thanks boys. See you next season and up the Filth.

The 2018 Season was obviously a successful one for 5th grade as we finished by taking out the Premiership. In what was a tight, tense grand final we prevailed after the siren by kicking our first penalty goal of season to take the game 20-18 over a stubborn Souths outfit.

The season began with an intense pre-season program with lots of player movement up and down grades during the trial games and continuing into the season proper. This led to some inconsistent results to start the season, losing two out of our first four games, but once a core group of players was established the results were very pleasing. Statistically, there are a few key numbers worthy of mention. The team finished second on the ladder but with equal points to the first placed Souths. This was thanks to the massive 10 bonus points accrued through the season. Finishing with eight wins and four losses we were able to secure a bonus point in every loss, which demonstrates the narrow margins between victory and defeat. This will be a priority to perfect for next year. Our biggest win was a 71-19 thumping of UQ and our biggest loss was a 20-15 nail-biter against GPS which we very nearly stole at the end. In terms of attack, we finished with six, four try bonus points from our eight wins which provided for some entertaining rugby. We scored 70 tries for the season which was the most in the competition and ended up with a massive +230 points differential. There was a pleasing mix of well-constructed team tries and some freakish individual efforts, none more so than Manuel Cole-Manolis’ 75m cracker to steal the win against Souths and book a spot in the Grand Final. One more number to note was the more than 60 players used in 5th grade for the season, it highlights how adaptable the team was, with new combinations virtually each week. This is a credit to the coaching program at the club, with players able to seamlessly move up and down grades with minimal impact as they all knew the basic patterns of play in attack and defence. As for the players themselves, whilst every player contributed to the success of the team there were many standout players. It’s difficult not to mention everyone that pulled on the jersey this year by name but, the consistent efforts all year in the forwards from Brad Ollson and Matt Hopper were outstanding. Later in the season, players such as Mike Browne, Alex Bewsey (who was cruelly denied a run in the grand final by breaking his leg during the last training session) and Liam Blake added to what became a dominant forward pack. Michael Lord, Jack Parker and Curtis Atkins also provided stability in a constantly changing backline. As 5th grade was one of the only teams to go with a fresh bench, special mention must also go to players who started mostly from the bench. It speaks volumes of the culture of our team that there were players who chose to remain with the team, regardless of whether they started or not. We never felt like we were losing anything when a player was replaced, and Braden Graham and Nicholas Craig exemplified this. Selection headaches were a constant issue, albeit a pleasant one to have, with fierce competition in all positions but especially at halfback and in the centres. This was somewhat exacerbated by player movement up and down grades and dropping players remains the most difficult part of team selection. Overall, winning the premiership is the obvious key indicator of a successful season but does not fully describe the culture that exists within the team. They play for each other and their never-say-die attitude is not to be underestimated, as demonstrated by the last-minute wins in the Semi Final and Grand Final. Finally, a massive thank you to Stumpy for keeping the team running smoothly with his managerial and ‘event-planning’ skills and Graham Silvester and Navi Fonoti for their huge efforts with the forward pack. The team’s success wouldn’t have been where it is without them.

The 2018 season started very similarly to previous years, with many players making their way down for preseason training. What became clear straight away to me and fellow coach, George Rafter, was the calibre of players and the hunger that they had to go back to back after winning the final in 2017. We had the core players from 2017 providing experience and the hunger of new players for the year to come.

Due to the sheer numbers and depth of brothers in 2018, Brothers were able to field two teams in the 6th Grade competition. The boys had a very strong start to the year, through the first round of games, with wins over GPS, University, Easts and Souths. Through the second round, the competition definitely got stronger with a hard-fought victory over GPS. But more convincing wins over the rest of the competition, bar a Brothers vs Brothers draw, allowed us to wrap up the competition undefeated with a points differential of +410. Lack of match fitness on the back of 3 straight weeks off of byes saw our first loss in the Major Semi Final against GPS. A convincing win against souths in the Preliminary Final, going up 56 - 7, saw us book a berth in the Grand Final. Grand Final day rolled around, we were as prepared as we could be but unfortunately a strong GPS team took the final 40-10. The boys made it very hard to pick the awards this year, after having many of them perform at such a high and consistent level throughout the year. After much deliberation, we decided our best forward was Paddy O'Connor, best back was Conor Harvey, Best and Fairest was Joe Kerins and the Brothers Medal was awarded to Tim Collyer.

I had the pleasure of coaching the seventh grade boys this season. We made it to the semi-finals. We went down in a close game to south’s in the Semi-Final, they got the better of us in a few games through the year. We had to call on the Colts boys to assist us with numbers through the finals. We played our games away from the rest of the club, which was challenging on the game days where we were struggling for numbers. One of our best games of the year against souths, where we played with 12 and managed to only lose by 4 in the dying minutes. I would like to thank the sixth grade boys who we trained with and their coaches for assistance throughout the year.

Colts 1 CLUB CHAMPIONS; PREMIERS, Minor Premiers, Winner of the Hector R. Doughty Challenge Shield, Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield & GreenBeacon Cup

The 2018 BRC Colts season began with the formation of both the coaching staff and playing group. Recruitment was performed through talent identification of both school/club rugby and by conducting numerous individual player meetings, Colts information night and advertising through club communication channels. The coaching staff for 2018 was confirmed by utilising existing colts’ coaches and by identifying key coaches from other programs.

Once the coaching staff was finalised an initial meeting was conducted to create the 2018 Colts Coaching philosophy that would set both the framework and methodology for the year. The main focus of the Colts program was to be athlete centred to try and develop the player both on and off the field.

Pre-Season began in the second week of January and was open to all Colts players. The main focus of the preseason was to develop the core skills of the playing group and to implement the key principles in both attack and defence. After four weeks of open sessions the Colts group was the selected into a top squad (Colts 1 and 2) and bottom squad (Colts 3 and 4). These two programs lead by team coaches then began implementing key technical and tactical strategies relevant to each team and competition. Preseason concluded with the planned club trials against GPS/UQ and Sunnybank.

The in-season performances of all teams were a credit to not only the recruitment of players but by the way teams were developed/prepared on a weekly basis. Teams were able to perform consistently throughout the season due to consistent standards, competition for spots and style of play. Throughout the season the top squad supported the bottom squad by sharing ideas, feedback from games and assisting with coaching at their sess ions. The culture of the colt’s group was also a main focus and solidified through social commitments, parent commitments and including them into the senior grades program as much as possible. Colts 1, Colts 2 and Colts 3 all finished minor premiers and only lost one game throughout the regular season.

The final series become successful with all three teams winning their major semis and earning a spot in the Grand Final. Colts 3 would play Wynnum, Colts 2 Bond University and Colts 1 Sunnybank. All three teams performed valiantly and can be proud of their efforts. Colts 1 and Colts 2 secured premierships with easy wins and Colts 3 went down in a thrilling contest 19-17.

All coaches, support staff and players can be extremely proud of their commitment and effort to the 2018 Colts Program. The success of the year should enhance the depth and talent of the 2019 program.

Colts 2 CLUB CHAMPIONS; PREMIERS, Minor Premiers, Winner of the Hector R. Doughty Challenge Shield & Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield

Our team was ably lead by our leadership group, captain Nick Cross, vice captains George Crossan and Hoani Ford-Stevens, plus ‘vice vice captain’ Levi White. Was a great season – 15 wins, one draw, one loss. An excellent ‘for and against’ points differential – if not a record, then very close. Undefeated Finals campaign, with excellent major semi win 71-5, and an outstanding Grand Final Win 41 to 14. A great bunch of young men, mature and inclusive, with great rapport. We were an effective and united squad. We regularly had a full bench, and everyone was always relied upon to do their job. Awards for the year were: Best Player Levi White; Best Back Nick Cross; Best Forward George Crossan. The Brothers medal went to Matt ‘LG’ Lo Grande but I'd like to also make a mention to Isaac Brosnan who is his no fuss way played Wing, 12, 13 and 6 for us throughout the year. Everyone played a huge part in our GF game, with mention to H who was very crook, but kept us pressing to victory. I'd like to thank the coaches this year Matt Ingram, Jonathan Clough, Jackson Darby, Yudai Fujisaki, manager David Cox and of course Alex ‘The Iceman’ Brown who was a great help to us on game days throughout the season. Thanks also extend to Colts 3 coaches, Liam & Jon, for their input, and solid support all year. My thanks also extend to our physios with Ian, Kat and the team; and, to the S&C guys headed up by Jono and Isaac. So many positives throughout the year including: a feeling of ‘team’, ‘buy in’ to what we were aiming to achieve & how we were going to achieve it, a willingness to improve, our embracing of success, our manly and mature conduct in victory and defeat, and the enjoyment the players got in playing footy. Of all the great things, including our results, 2 highlights stand out to me: Mid-season in a game versus Bond at Bond. As is the tradition, the team before us tunnelled us on – I still see Gendy, a 200+ gamer, tunnelling our boys on, with the widest smile you'll ever see - to me that embodies what being a Brothers player is about, and what being within the family means. A second highlight for me was on Grand Final day, the second half try that went down the western side, almost the full length of the field. Great catch/pass, with inside & outside passing, excellent support. ‘Champagne Rugby’. I am happy to admit I got a bit emotional with that, for to me, it typified what we were about, & secured the Grand Final Trophy. A terrific season, a great bunch of lads and I look forward to watching them develop and prosper in their rugby playing, and their lives, in the future. Thanks men – well done.

Colts 3 (B) CLUB CHAMPIONS; 7th; Winner of the Hector R. Doughty Challenge Shield & Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield

A bittersweet year for the Colts 3 & 4 was had this year with a stumble at the last hurdle costing us a premiership due to a couple of refereeing blunders that put a huge amount of pressure on the team in the last 15 minutes of the Grand Final. The season commenced at the start of the year with nearly 50 kids from all different schools and backgrounds. Liam & I made the decision that everyone gets a run no matter what and whilst it may have cost a couple of games, it had the benefit of guys playing rugby and improving every week as well having some fun. This was particularly important later in the season when we needed players to fill spots in games towards the end of the season and they played very well

because they put in at training and took their opportunities when they came. The 2 teams trained, played and parties as a squad. The squad had the full range of players and abilities and although the Colts 4 teams results weren’t as impressive as the Colts 3, they played a great style of footy and with many guys playing out of position certainly gave us some cracking games culminating with a come from behind win at Wynnum which was as good a game as I have ever seen and proved the point that we had a very special group of blokes that will work hard for each other and the team and put in 100%. This game also saw the coming of age / emergence of 2 players in Max Stevens and Angus Chapman & who had worked very hard at training, took their opportunities as they came and had improved out of sight. With so many boys and people being available / not available or having something on as well as trying to manage players back from injury or coming down or going up from Colts 2, it was hard to settle on a Colts 3 & 4 team every week especially when players were having great games in Colts 4 yet the guys in Colts 3 were doing the same. The boys came together as a group and impressed me how much they gelled as a group and so easily. The ability of these blokes to slot into different positions or even play 2 or 3 positions in one game as well as forwards playing in the backs and vice versa, was outstanding and it basically laid the platform for the Colts 3 team to finish Minor Premiers undefeated and looking very good for the finals. Some guys were playing 2 games in one day as well. Whilst the 4’s didn’t qualify for the finals, it was a great team effort by the Colts 3 to claim the undefeated minor premiership and move into the semis finals. We played against a Wynnum side in the first Semi-Final who we had come up against only a couple of weeks before when we had a 30-point deficit at half time to storm home in the second half win in the last minute with a basically Colts 4 side playing. With that ringing in their ears and their Colts team back to full strength with players, they turned up and were ready to play rugby. They had us on the rack with strong attacking raids down our right side and eventually they got their noses in front and had every intention of staying there. In true Brothers Colts 3 never say die style we pushed hard towards their line and with the hooter gone in the background and the Wynnum boys no breathing fire on their own line determined to hold us out and go straight through to the GF, Jack Greentree, Bredd and Joe O’Brien combined with a little raid down the short side catching the Wynnum boys with their pants down and go over in the last play of the game – we are off to the Big Dance. The week off did us well good and although training was not ideal with people not being available to help out while Liam was away, we trained OK and got ourselves into a good mindset for the GF. We were up against Wynnum again after they dispatched a Uni team that had lost its way in the last few weeks of the season. With our heads in the right space we were ready for the opportunity to take an undefeated premiership – so rare these days in any form of sport. Wynnum were always going to come out firing and they did, but our defence held strong and we cleared the ball well and kept the pressure on them and got ourselves out to a good lead – and although they started to claw back a little – we were in control and kept our defence strong as the charged at us time & time again…. Then, the unthinkable happened. A red card to Will Reid under dubious circumstances as well as more than a few absolute howlers from the referee gave Wynnum the sniff they needed. They started to get under the skin of the Brothers boys, whooping and cheering the ref’s decisions, and letting us know about it. Although I don’t think that the Wynnum boys with 20 mins to go thought they were going to win, they were lifting and starting to break tackles, get up really quick on our line and get in our face. Our boys lost a bit of composure, coupled with us not playing to the whistle on occasion although it looked like certain offside or forward pass etc. Wynnum broke through some tackles and scored a try right up the middle – the one area we swore that we would never let a try be scored there. With their tail up the y started to go down our right side and eventually, under another dubious call, went in for a try that locked up the scoreboard with a kick to come, a kick which they got and went on to win the Grand Final. Although we were shattered, they won, and it was a lesson we only want to learn once. A lot of the credit for the success of the Colts 3 & 4 group needs to be given to Liam. He has shown his dedication to both teams and maintained a style of play that was simple and effective. He has the respect of all of the boys and in return he gives 100% to the teams on the field and always makes himself available to the boys and although he couldn’t be there on Grand Final day, he was there in spirit. He may have been the difference on the day. The Colts 3 & 4 had a great season and I’m sure that players had as much fun as the coaches did. It was a privilege to be involved with such a great group of guys. The majority of guys will be back next year where I’m confident we will go a step further.

I haven’t gone into individual players as we could be here all day, but it would be remiss of me not to remind all of the people who were involved in the Colts 3 & 4 group this about how much fun we had. There were a lot of laughs (usually at someone’s expense) and I’m sure that there will be lifelong friendships that come from this group. Big thanks to Schultzy, Trav, Tony, Matty, Jackson Cloughy for keeping us on the straight and narrow as best they could. Our Manager Damien Janbroers who did a great job under tough circumstances trying to keep tabs on 2 teams in 2 locations every week and sometimes with no coached there to help out. Thanks Damo, you’re a legend. Our merry band od supporters including parents, players etc. Thanks for being a part of the year. Finally, to Liam “Bonkers” McKeown. Not only is he a great bloke and coach, he genuinely has the best interest of the players at heart at all times. He puts in a huge amount of work to make sure that it runs well which is not easy with almost 50 kids at one stage, and picked the best teams possible but most importantly, was able to spot the guys that were working hard and reward them accordingly. Looking forward to next year.

It is at this age we start to see our playing numbers challenged, and it was encouraging that we almost reached the fielding of three teams. We welcomed a number of new players from some north-side clubs which provided some fresh players to balance those boys whom continued on from the prior year. It is always encouraging to see both new players and their families, join our club to participate in Rugby, and the fellowship it provides. Our two teams after the grading trials thence embarked upon the year ahead. The U14 playing group fielded two teams, one in Division 2 and the other in the Division 3 competition. Eddie Ryan led the Division 2 Navy team this year from the front, and the boys embarked upon an objective to reach the finals and enjoy their rugby. This was achieved with Brothers finishing second on the ladder with 29 points, behind Springfield Hawks. Overall the team achieved 6 wins and registered 3 losses from 9 competition games in 2018 Navy The Navy side played a very competitive Semi–Final just going to down to Springfield Hawks 10 – 7. This game was acknowledged as the best of the year for the Navy team. The Navy team always improved against Springfield throughout the year. From having a 29 points deficit in Round 3 to just 12 in Round 9, to then just 3 points in a final. This was a great reflection of how the team learnt from prior games and applied that knowledge to almost win against the eventual competition winners. Having then to go through a preliminary final the Navy side unfortunately went down to WDCR at Sunnybank. Silver Our Division 3 team had a mixed year during the regular season. At times they showed signs of great promise and ability, but other times lapsed in concentration and discipline. Winning 2 regular season games the team looked like they would not make the finals, after a final round loss to Caboolture. Luckily the boys would be provided an opportunity to play finals rugby and finished fourth on the ladder. The after match review of the Caboolture match had the boys

reflecting, and soul searching on how playing to a game plan and sticking to controlling the ball could provide them with the outcome they were seeking. It was now semi-final time and Brothers had to win every game to stay in the competition. Our team had definitely saved their best for last, and a strong & spirited performance in the semi-finals against Everton Park at home saw the boys victorious by winning 38 – 17. It was an amazing game with a very parochial home crowd from the Roosters there to encourage their own team. The boys played like a team and demonstrated what the coaches know they were capable of. The next week would see our side line up against Wynnum, whom Brothers had not beaten throughout the year. Again, in another amazing but tight game the Brothers boys rallied to defeat Wynnum 20-15. It was a nail biter at times and was again a culmination of executing a game plan and getting the basics right, supported by some great defence. The Grand Final was now on the horizon and the boy’s spirits were high, and their belief was even h igher. Brothers DIV 3 was now the only team representing the club in a junior grand-final. The boys felt they had something to prove and felt as the last team standing that they wanted to bring a win home to Crosby. An amazing Grand Final was witnessed. Our team whom has not beaten Riverside were down 21 – 0 at half time. This was not a reflection of the way the game was unfolding – it was tight and tough. The second half commenced and our boys with nothing to lose threw everything at Riverside. At times they were camped in the opposition half constantly and showed a spirit and desire to overcome the first half deficit. At full-time the score was 21-12, with Brothers holding Riverside to nil in the second half. It was an outstanding second half turnaround, and with a few extra minutes in the game who knows maybe the result could have favoured Brothers. However, Riverside earned the win and our boys were gracious in defeat, but no doubt proud of how well they had improved and performed during the final’s series. This year was also the first year that a number of boys could be recognised for playing 10 years at Brothers. It is worth congratulating all of the following boys whom achieved this significant milestone; Ashton Bond, Darcy Heath, Ethan Innes, Eddie Ryan and Tom Sinnamon I am sure all of the boys and parents extend to our Navy coaches - James Vincent & Gary Smith, and Manager Toby Innes; our White coaches Karl Innes, Anthony Walker & Mick Caruana and Manager Anthony Smith, our thanks and gratitude for the time; effort and encouragement that they provided. In addition to all of the parents whom helped with the field set and break up; bar duty; washing of jerseys and other tasks it was pleasing to see so many chip in when required. 2019 will no doubt come around quickly, and on the back of the strength of our two teams it is not hard to believe that our boys may just go one step further in 2019.

Under 13 The 2018 cohort of U13’s players fielded 2 teams, Navy & White and welcomed some new families into the Brothers community. After trials, Navy were pitched against a very competitive Division 1 whilst White played Division 4 before changing to a more comparable Division 5 in the second half. The players all experienced a heightened level of physicality of the game, with injuries not uncommon however with that came a resolve by coaches to prepare the boys well for the season. The Rankings at the end of the season saw U13 Navy contest the semi-finals and took out 4th position on the ladder; whilst White who were undefeated in the 2nd half of the season, were pipped in the Preliminary Finals as we fielded a weakened side due to injury. Players across both teams experienced tremendous skills and confidence improvement which translated into some fantastic footy in the second half of the season. This would not have been possible without the dedication of the coaches, so a special thanks to our volunteer coaches: Steven Briggs, Brendan Power, Jay Jayasiriwardena, Shane O’Neil and Chris Caruana. Again, this season Steve Briggs went above and beyond to arrange specialist skills clinics in

the first half of the season to accelerate skills development which was well supported and thoroughly appreciated. The team Managers ensured players and parents knew where to go when, so thank you to fellow Manager Damon Haines (Navy) for your coordination efforts this season. The season closed out with the boys having the opportunity to participate in an U13 NZ Touring Team of the South Island for 6 days of footy and fun organised by David Clark and Damon Haines. The 21 boys who attended represented the Club in the Brothers spirit with respect and courage. They won 4 of their 7 games on tour, including games against Hornby RC, Ohoka RC, Waihora RC, Whakatipu RC, Lennox Head RC and Timaru RC. Only days after their return home, we had some NZ teams from Northcote Rugby Club and Takapuna Rugby Club play at Crosby Park, with all U13 players invited to experience playing against international competition on our home soil. A great way to finish the season!

Under 12 Our U12’s for 2018 saw a lot of returning faces but also some new recruits joining the ranks. Families and the boys were introduced to grading for the first time and as a result we saw three teams established to compete for Brothers. Navy, Silver and White were established, and the team grading process started in earnest to determine which division each team would play in. While grading continued, the U12s also got the opportunity to participate in their first Brothers Tour to Sydney to compete for the John Eales Shield against Mosman. Forty-four flew down with the support of a lot of family members where they were billeted with Mosman families for the weekend. Two teams were formed and there were strong results achieved across the rugby field with Brothers retaining the Shield again and some great friendships formed among the Mosman and Brothers boys. Thanks, must go to Randall Corless for his organisational efforts and for those that took on responsibilities across the weekend. A great weekend away for all. In another first for the age group, our lads were able to nominate for BJRU rep carnival selection with a number of boys called up for representative duties. Navy Under 12 Navy were a relatively small side but there was no lack of talent or heart. One of Dennis’s key coaching objectives was to ensure that the boys would finish the season better rugby players than when they started. Players were given the opportunity to play in numerous positions and were given the skills to do so. Confidence built each week and the boys played at 100% to the final whistle, week in and week out. There were mixed results on the scoreboard but the it was certainly a successful season if measured by player growth, commitment and enjoyment. Special thanks go to Dennis, Damian and Bernie for their coaching and to all the Mums and Dads who volunteered throughout the season. Silver After a slow start to the year in a challenging Division, the U12 Silver team fought back to have a 50% win record. The boys had an enjoyable season where new friendships were made and opportunities to play in a variety of positions were provided through injuries. Regardless of the result, it was great to see the sportsmanship of the team maintained through the season and their upbeat attitude to taking on the challenges afforded by Coach Peter Bayo. Peter was assisted greatly throughout the season by Brent, Rohan and Rupert. Thanks to all of the parents for their support through the year in not only fulfilling the volunteer responsibilities around the team but also ensuring the boys were on time for training and games.

White Under 12 White started the season with a clear objective communicated to players and families that “Participation is the Key”. The players regularly reminded themselves that they could lift when they were put under pressure, such as playing with limited numbers and attaining pleasing results. Ultimately, they won the majority of their games, and reflected constructively on what they let slip when the score line did not finish in their favour. We were thankful to parents who assisted with a range of duties, especially those who were always there to take on the regular tasks. The boys are now at an age where they would start to realise a correlation between when they trained well, they played well. An area which did develop though still has some room for enhancement is encouraging each other when all did not work out. Thanks also to Steve Briggs who arranged specialist skills clinics in the first half of the season to support skills development which was well supported and thoroughly appreciated. In all a successful year for U12 and thanks to all club staff, coaches, managers and parents that participated in the various roles and responsibilities required to be fulfilled that made the year the success that it was. I look forward to seeing you all back in 2019.

Under 10 Another year is done and dusted for the mighty Under 10’s Most of our boys are now 5 years into their rugby careers and from what I saw through the season the skills level and overall performance has increased significantly. I still remember watching my youngest playing with the butterflies in back play and now he’s getting the Tackelator Award for his team. It just shows that each boy or girl finds their grove in their own time. Let them enjoy the game and the rest will follow. On a personal note I would like to thank the entire Brothers community for the last 10 years active playing in the MRP and standard game and for all the great memories. As my family moves to a new city, I do hope to be back and might evens organise a touring team, so I can have another beer on the hill or in the Juniors bar with some old mates. Red Another great year for the boys learning the techniques of competitive line outs and scrummaging which added complexity to each game. The team approached the year with good energy and kept their heads & spirits high regardless of the score line. With an increase in bodies on the filed along with debutants joining from varied sporting backgrounds it was a year of bonding and team work. Special mention to our Brothers Medal recipient Ben Sciacca in provided some highlights in defence and a young man who wears his heart on his sleeve. Our best back Hamish King who is always full of running and our best forward Oscar Crowther who adds some Brothers mongrel to his forward duties.

Every team member at one point through the year could have easily been awarded these places which proves again rugby is a great team sport. Navy It was a very successful season for U10 Blue that saw 5 new players join the team in 2018. The boys finished 2nd in their Blue Division with some very close matches across the entire season. Benji Brandt was the well-deserved winner of the Brothers Medal. All the boys showed significant improvement in both skills and positional play, thanks to the dedication of coaches Lloyd Penrose and Jim Campbell. Thanks also to all the families that supported the team throughout the year at training and on weekends. Green This year saw the addition of a number of new players to our Green Machine Team. There was a huge improvement in the players skills throughout the season, being very competitive against some much larger teams. We were down on players in a number of games throughout the year, but the team showed plenty of tenacity to work together as a team and come out on top. A credit to all boys stepping up to the mark. Congratulations to all our players and Brothers Medal recipient Oliver Sutton. Thanks to the team for a great season. Gold We had a slow start this year but came home strong. There were huge improvements in all the players and the games were great to watch. The move to full length field really opened the game up for the players and gave them a better understanding of positional play and set pieces. Our Best Back this year went to Harrison Beirne, whose defence and attitude was so good he was practically a forward, as all backs wish they were. Looking forward to seeing him again next year. Raefe Swindle was our Best Forward. His speed out of the scrum and from a lineout earnt him the nickname “The Bogeyman” last year, as he chased enough backs down this year, he has kept the title. Best and Fairest went to Luke Shepherd. Luke gave his all and was always there to help teammates and opposition players alike. No matter how hard we trained or played he would have a smile on his face. The recipient of the Brothers Medal this year was one of our best improved players, Rupert Kazlauskas. He truly displayed the values of “Brothers In Arms” and was a valued member of the team. Many thanks should go to Matt Duane for his commitment & dedication to training the Under 10 Gold team. White I think it’s pretty safe to say that all the under 10 White boys had a great season in 2018, developing their rugby skills and even more importantly genuinely enjoying the game and being part of a team. Their skill development over the season, coupled with their general positive attitude to playing each week, is something each parent can be very proud of. Congratulations to our Brothers’ Medal winner Ryder McFarlane for his consistent display of the Club Values, in particular respect and selflessness; and a special shout out to our ‘Best Back’ recipient for the year Archie Boorer who scored an amazing 13 tries for the team this season. To our parents, a big thank you for always being enthusiastic volunteers, and in particular to our coach John Gough, thank you for another fantastic year.

Under 9

In 2018, there were 5 Under 9 Teams representing Brothers Junior Rugby. This is less than previous years. Team volunteers were easy to get, with parents in this age group aware of the roles that need to be filled and prepared at the Information Session. This was fortunate, as soon after, the carnival needed planning and volunteers. As a new AGC, this was challenging for me, as I was also travelling interstate for work in the key planning week. Luckily, Hamish provided significant assistance to make sure things ran smoothly on the day. A longer lead time to prepare for this would be advantageous for future years. It would allow the AGC to plan for success, and balance all of their commitments as well. It would also be helpful if a “run sheet” or task list was prepared and provided to the AGC to smooth the planning. Feedback on the carnival was generally positive; kids had fun, well run, easy to attend etc… However, the absence of senior Brothers players & Queensland Reds presence was obvious from years past. There also was discussion that the Brothers’ professional coaching staff could have been present to guide and support. If the purpose of the Carnival is to reacquaint the children to the game and to learn, understand and practice the new skills for their age group, perhaps more commitment from the senior players and coaching staff to assist parent volunteer coaches would be appropriate. Building consistency in the skills learnt, expectations of kids, and coaching techniques before the season begins sets teams up for success. Games are a great way to apply skills that have been coached and communicated; with only 1 training session held prior to the Carnival, the ability to drive this by parent coaches is limited. The season ran smoothly, with minimal challenges presented from games, or Clubs we played. Game results seemed to indicate definite strength in some teams, and opportunity to improve in others. Most teams had a really enjoyable season, irrespective of the win/loss result which is pleasing to see – it means coaches and managers are imparting the right ethos with players and defining losses as opportunities to learn and grow. There was some confusion throughout the season on when coaches should no longer be on the field with the players – some Clubs had already started this on advice from BJRU (according to them) and some weren’t. There were also discrepancies on some of the on-field rules – when I requested this be clarified for all Under 9 teams from the Club, it took longer than I expected to receive a response. The Trophy Day was a great success, and everyone really enjoyed the festivities. Under 9 parents turned out in large numbers to help set up, which was really pleasing to see. The day ran smoothly, and involvement of Coaches and Team Managers was again appreciated. It was a great way to wrap up the 2018 Season. Overall, parents indicated to me that they enjoyed the season and the kids had fun learning new skills and applying them on the field. Feedback on opportunities to improve the season, and make it easier for volunteers and players can be grouped into a few key categories:

1. Greater contribution to the Junior Club from senior Brothers’ and Queensland Reds players as well as coaching staff. Presence at Carnival Day, Coaching Sessions, even games against Brothers’ traditional “rival” clubs. Allow the kids to look up to the senior players and want to be just like them.

2. Timeliness – volunteers are managing their life and balancing a lot of priorities already. Asking them to

immediately action requests is unreasonable and reduces the chance of success. The season has much the same run sheet of events, requests for additional volunteers, charity and fundraising each year – provide this to AGC’s at the beginning of the season to engage their volunteers with more than a day or two’s notice.

3. Opportunity for skills sessions either the week or two prior to “official” season start or delivered through first

couple of training sessions. The changes to play for each age group are known – prepare coaches for this ahead of the season and set the team up for greatest success embedding these. Mid-season, senior coaching staff to spend time physically at the Junior training sessions checking in on player skills, and opportunities for coaches to improve. This is about setting our junior players up for success as they grow older – and building engagement with them and their parents providing a future funnel for Brothers’ Senior Club.

4. Organisation & clear communication. The volume of emails sent to AGC’s to then forward to Team Managers

seemed to be huge, with some being sent one after the other on the same day, and even the same message

from different Brothers’ staff. A communication plan should be pretty easy to deliver that prevents this. For example – a weekly wrap up from the Club to AGC’s with all updates in the one email. This could include technical information (Managers off the field from XXX), fundraising / event notices (McDonalds socks), directions for upcoming needs (team photos on X date – save the date).

Under 8 The year has seen some players that really take to the change of tackle, rucks and mauls more than others. This part of the game I feel should be introduced on a training level at earlier ages to prepare the younger ones and not be as much of a step up from U7. This year saw seven teams playing so numbers were good and didn’t seem to slip away with the tackle part introduced. It would be my recommendation for a extra training sessions over the year with grade players to help with technique and aid in injury prevention with tackling. Training sessions at Windsor Park have been successful with the AGC’s running the club officials’ job. The only issues that I have come across this year and have spoken to the other AGC’s is the gear shed and eating area left in a state after training. Every time I was on the gear shed had to pulled back out and stacked back in position and the eatery area cleaned up by myself and my children. Although bins are located everywhere people leave their rubbish and walk out. Some signs may help in solving this problem. The Under 8 Day at the Premier Grade game was a great success with the boy’s forming the tunnel and playing at half time. All involved had a great day. At current players involved in the sevens comp are having a great time with U8 players playing against U9 players learning so much as the older ones show more skills from the extra year. This will aid in following year to the skill level.

Under 7 2018 was our boys second season and they took upon the challenge with great enthusiasm with faster running, better co-ordination, better passing of the ball and practicing their tackling skills for 2019. As the AGC for Under 7 I got to see most of our teams play and by all accounts there has been substantial improvement throughout the year with most of the players showing great enthusiasm and talent. Kick off was carnival day which ran smoothly a special thanks to Hamish Baird for your role in co-ordinating the Junior age group, as always things were organised and well run. Now we are looking toward the 2019 season and i know from a parent’s perspective we are all looking forward to seeing our kids progress on their Brothers Rugby journey. I would like to also give a huge thank you to all the Under 7 Manager, Coaches, Trainers, Referees and also all the other parents that volunteered for canteen duty, field Marshalling duties without your help the club wouldn’t run. Looking forward to seeing you all again next year.

Under 6 Our Under 6 participants got to experience their fast taste of rugby in a 14 game season with a pre-season carnival day. We had 59 players across 6 teams at Brothers including one girl. Approximately 45% of players had been part of Little Brothers. The Club depends entirely upon volunteer parents for the Under 6 Rugby programme so the common thread on registration night was parents found themselves with roles they never thought they would do. Congratulations to the coaches who were universally Dad’s and the managers who were Mum’s and Dad’s. The Role of Hamish Baird as the overall co-ordinator was invaluable. Whilst the season appeared long, when it was over there was an obvious void in Saturday routines. We hope for a strong showing in Under 7. Participation in the Brothers seniors home games with half time matches was supported and for some family’s time at Brothers on Saturday afternoon looked very comfortable. Things we did well included trying to mould our young charges in the way of enjoying sport and learning to compete. Our players improved and by the end of the season most had a grasp of the direction to run, how to tag and learning to be part of a team. Areas we might look to improve for next year would be the involvement of Brothers senior players in training, visits to Thursday night training by Red’s players (thank you to George Smith for his attendance) and perhaps an improvement on the catering quality (enthusiasm wasn’t the issue) on Thursday nights. There were mixed views about proposals to introduce intra Brothers rugby in the future. However once explained to parents it found support. If it is to happen explaining it to parents will be critical. I look forward to next year and seeing our young players return for another season.

CLUB TOUR REPORTS

Under 13 New Zealand Tour 2018 Report

At the end of the 2018 season, Brothers under 13 toured New Zealand on the third annual journey to the South Island. The tour party included 21 boys as part of an ungraded team and 5 tour leaders. The team and managers had an extremely successful week with a good mix of rugby and tour activities. The boys represented the club in the Brothers spirit with respect and courage and won 4 of their 7 games on tour. Brothers was hosted in Christchurch by the Hornby RC and Ohoka RC, whilst again boarding at the Christchurch Football Club. The team then went south to Queenstown to compete in the Queenstown Rugby Festival, including games against Waihora RC, Whakatipu RC, Lennox Head RC and Timaru RC. Brothers were the Plate winners in this competition and a Brothers boy won the player of the tournament, which includes an all-expenses paid scholarship to the IRANZ rugby academy. The tour was a great mix of rugby and tour activities including jet boating, rafting and lugeing. Many friendships forged, relationships made with NZ clubs, great memories for all involved and plenty of stories to tell. Unfortunately, we had to send Angus Hamilton (who was a late call up to tour) home with a broken collar bone. The Brothers touring tradition continues!

SYDNEY NEW ZEALAND

Under 12 Mosman Tour 2018 Report

Forty-Four Under 12 Brothers boys and their supporters headed to Sydney to take part in the Mosman tour and compete for the John Eales Shield. The tour in its fourth year, combines some Sydney Harbour activities and social gatherings with rugby games on Saturday and the main event against Mosman on Sunday. The Shield, which is decided by cumulative points scored over all Sunday games, was won by Brothers (71 points to 36) for the third consecutive year and was presented by John himself who quoted while addressing the boys “Brothers is still the best club in Australia”.

The Mosman tour is the epitome of what rugby should stand for … looking after your mates, establishing lifelong friendships and being part of a Club tradition. Let’s hope the 12’s tour continues for many years to come as part of the junior clubman’s journey. Brothers Rugby thank the Mosman Junior Rugby Club for their continued support and the warm welcome they give our Under 12 boys and families.

Tour leader Randall Corless in his recent tour wrap, acknowledged a number of groups of people, who contributed to making this weekend simply fantastic for our Under 12 cohort.

Chris Parkers, Pete Bayo and Jamie Washington, never did I doubt there would be any problems in returning 44 boys safely with these gentlemen in charge. Thank you, gents, outstanding job.

Coaches Pete Bayo and Matt Duane and Assistants Mark Connors, Jamie Washington, Brent Fiedler, Damian Mason, Rupert McCall, Michael Kasprowicz and managers Andrew McMaster and Jason Enders, the coaching/managing team, who ensured our boys did our club proud on the field. Surely the hardest job of the tour. You very capably pulled together a group of boys thrown into two teams and came out with the chocolates. Well done.

Our boys conducted themselves in a manner that should make their parents very proud. On the rugby field, in transit, at billets homes and in public they displayed that youthful, cheeky enthusiasm we would all like back, but did it with respect and courtesy. Mark Goddard’s comments on Sunday said it all. I could not be prouder of each and every one of you.

Before the weekend, the coaches and management were told ... the weekend will be measured as a success in terms of: “All boys getting a fair go, the boys play with a different group of boys, each team supports the other with conviction, the parent group says how great it was without complaint about their boy’s treatment and the boys rave about how fun it was. And if we win, loud and clear, that is a bonus. I want to build culture, give the boys an experience they will talk about for a long time.”

And the Tour Leaders were told the overall weekend would be measured in terms of: “I would think we would want to ensure the culture amongst the age group at Brothers Rugby is enhanced; new friendships are facilitated both at a player and supporter level; the entire group reports a fabulous weekend and become enthused about their future as a Brothers Player/Supporter.”

With every good wish to you all for your future as a Brothers Rugby Club Player and Supporter.

With humbleness and sincerity

BROTHERS TOUCH ASSOCIATION

2018 has been a huge year of growth, development and expansion for Brothers Touch Association. Our numbers continue to grow, despite our lack of green space and the Brothers Touch brand is becoming a powerhouse on the touch scene. Our playing numbers have grown considerably each year with the figures below showing constant growth. 2016 – 446 players 2017 – 870 players (including the introduction of boy’s program) 2018 – 1281 players (including boys and metro program - season 2) Our vision is to have as many young people playing touch in the Butchers Stripes and part of the Brothers Community as we can. We need to be able to provide for our member base and growth. The above numbers are difficult to sustain with two playing fields and the condition of the bottom field often means that we regularly have wash outs after heavy rain. In Season 1 we moved the girl’s program across two playing nights to allow for greater growth, whilst also running the boys program on a Monday night. It is difficult for the programs to continue to grow when using a shared facility with rugby and have to vacate by a certain time. Our Junior Representative program is always a work in progress. We saw the introduction of an under 10 boys’ team this season attending Junior State Cup. We hope to take two boy’s teams in 2019 being U10s and U12s and three girls’ teams in U10s, U12s and U14s. The introduction of the Senior Elite Metro Program in 2018 saw the elite pathway for Brothers players strengthen and grow. The Metro Cup played out of Whites Hill is the Premier Elite competition in Brisbane. Brothers entered 6 senior teams in the Metro Cup in 2018, including four women’s teams and two men’s teams. Brothers were able to field both Men and Women’s Premier teams featuring current Australian and QLD players such as Marikki Watego, Kimberley Sue See, Kat Stevens and Tim Glazebrook. Our Premier women’s team made the Semi-Finals in their first year of playing for Brothers. The benefits of introducing the Metro Cup to our playing roster has already been seen four current Brothers Juniors making their Metro Cup debut and one player making their debut in the division 1. We have also been able to strengthen our junior coaching ranks with three of the six metro coaches taking on junior rep teams for 2019. We have many representative players wearing the Butcher Stripes with pride. Australian Women’s Open – Marikki Watego, Kim Sue See, Tamika Upton Australian Men’s Open – Tim Glazebrook Australian Mixed Open – Kat Stevens Australian Youth – Mel Wilks, Hagiga Mosby, Kobe Nona, Darnell Bennet Queensland “State of Origin” – Kim Sue See, Marikki Watego, Mel Wilks, Kat Stevens, Tamika Upton, Kat Woodger, Clare Johnson, Mai Peregrina

Elite 8 Premiership – Kim Sue See, Marikki Watego, Kat Stevens, Mel Wilks, Hagiga Mosby, Tamika Upton Queensland 40’s Coaching Staff – Shane Crotty, Lisa Basiden Hagiga Mosby also played Aon 7s this year and was named in the AON Dream Team and recently played for Australia in the Oceanic Cup. We have also had many of our junior players make the Met North teams and senior players make Brisbane Cobras. We are yet to have any of our junior players make Cobras representative teams. We continue to try to develop and upskill our players, coaches and referees. We have over 30 level 1 referees with many being recently upgraded to level 2. We encourage all social coaches to complete their level 1 coaching accreditation so to keep our players up with the latest trends and skills of our games. With limited assistance from our regional body, it is difficult for us to hold skill clinics and development sessions with the few volunteers that we have. We are continually trying to organise and move forward. Cobras have had three development officers in the past 18 months, so it is hard to find continuity and help in this area. Volunteers is the one area that we struggle with. We have a handful that are invaluable to the success of our program. One in particular Carla Clayton was named as Brothers Volunteer of the year for 2018. It is great to have our people acknowledged not only within the touch community but by the wider Brothers Club. Without these volunteers we wouldn’t be able to bring our touch program to over 600 girls, 200 boys and 100 senior metro players this season alone. Funding and sponsorship see that we are able to keep our program going and growing. Functions like the Women in Sport lunch is a great opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the great work that women within our sport do. These events are a chance to raise money and awareness for what we do and the importance of our programs. Our sponsors are incredible in the backing and the support that they offer us. A huge thank you to our major sponsor BOQ Albany Creek who has a daughter in both our touch and 7s program and to FIIG and MIDAS for believing in our vision and passion for the game. We look to continue this growth and success in 2019. Items that we will be working on over the next 12 months are:

• We need to overcome the challenges of limited field space to be able to accommodate all our players and to be able to welcome more into our community.

• we would like to develop links with local schools to form relationships where we can share our knowledge and promote the game on the north side of Brisbane.

• Continue to build our relationships with other north side affiliates to promote our game and provide opportunities for our players.

• Access more sponsorship and businesses to come on board.

• More Brothers junior players having the opportunity to represent the region.

• Strengthen our Metro Cup program

• Increase our amount of qualified and accredited coaches and referees

• Increase our number of volunteers

• Upskill players

• Improve and develop our club while still maintaining the social feel and community vibe of our club and competition

2019 will be another huge year for Brothers Touch and we look forward to what waits for our players, coaches and supporters.
