CV & SELECTED WORKS
April 2012
About Broomheads’ Homemade:
We are a creative practice with a background in design
and architecture. Over the years we have gained in-depth
knowledge of how public art is produced using workshops,
public opinion, research and good design. Our goal is to
bring something positive to peoples’ environment creating
public art that can be understood and embraced.
Our ethos:
‘Homemade’ symbolises what we feel is important: honesty;
keeping things simple; commissioning local and using the
fewest materials or ingredients; turning nothing into
something; bringing people together; and using our home
to make art that brings a smile.
Working with people:
For us understanding, listening and visualising is key to
working with people. Organising workshops and enthusing
groups to come up with ideas is a really enjoyable part
of the design process. This is where the simplest of
ideas can spark a fantastic piece of design.
Placemaking:
We work with unloved and unused spaces and produced good
design that enhanced and instilled pride. For us taking
time to understand the environment and the people who use
it is paramount.
Working to budget:
We’ve worked with a broad range of budgets and always
keep things transparent. A bit of creative thinking and
elbow grease gets the job done.
Thank you:
We are excited about this project and we would love to be
involved. The following pages give our initial thoughts
about the project and explain a little more about us and
our work.
All the best Tony & Aprille

Architecture & Design
Location: Bolton, Lancs
Cost: £2,500
Johnson Fold FM
As part of the Johnson Fold estate annual broadcast we were commission to
engage the community in the science of radio. We worked with a local youth
group to create three shows and to ensure everyone could tune in we devised a
simple cardboard radio.
Funded by Bolton at Home
Location: Blackburn, Lancs
Cost: £250,000
Pleckgate
Working as Lead Artists we have developed an arts strategy for a new BSF academy in
Blackburn. We engaged with the community through a number of events, including walks,
radio workshops, film-making and planting days.
The engagement process influenced the design of several public artworks that are
currently being realised in and around the school. The projects include constructing
a new retaining wall made from local stone and artworks in the school grounds which
integrate the landscape and building to create an overall piece.
The project is funded by Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Square routes
The Square Routes project involved working with pupils from 4 Lancaster schools
to develop ideas for improvements to public spaces in the town centre. The pupils
created a film and podcast which highlighted issues and suggested solutions.
The film was presented to the City Council and shown in the tourist information
centre. The work influenced the city’s planning policy and gave a voice to the
young people of Lancaster. We then worked with the Council to transform those
ideas into a cultural masterplan.
The project was funded by Lancaster City Council.

Dream it, Build it
This delightful workshop led project comprised a jigsaw of soft building
blocks, that created a 1:25 scale replica of the Royal Festival Hall,
Queen Elizabeth Hall and Hayward Gallery. Each block containing an
electronic tag that triggered film footage about the area.
Project funded by South Bank Centre and CABE
Location: Bishops Castle, Shropshire
Cost: £16,000
SpArC
Broomheads’ are currently working with a group of young people in rural
Shropshire to design a bold piece of public art for the outside of SpArC, the
local sports and arts centre.
The aim of the project is to bring the internal creative character of the
SpArC centre to the fore and to make it identifiable as a vibrant community
venue. The final design will celebrate the input of the local youth.
The project is funded by the Big Lottery Fund
Location: Holbeck, Leeds
Cost: £20,000
Wonderwood
This enchanting community space was commissioned by Holbeck Urban Village. The
installation was originally designed as a temporary summer project but it has
become so popular it is now a permanent feature.
Funded by Leeds City Council and Arts Council England

Cost: £150,000
Lightwave
Commissioned by Lambeth Borough Council and GLL, this interactive light sculpture
represents one of the largest public art projects undertaken in the area for over a
decade. The piece transforms the exterior of the leisure centre into a vibrant
artwork that is controlled directly by the local community.
The undulating piece is inspired by wave patterns and responds to movement in the
pool. The lights can be controlled by members of the public via text
messaging, allowing local people to change the colour of the building and trigger
light shows.

Broomheads’ Homemade is a creative practice
established by Tony & Aprille Broomhead.
Who is Tony?
I’m an architect interested in community focused
design. After working in several practices and
having established a successful London design
studio I became increasing involved with public
art. I have been lucky enough to have worked on
creative projects around the country and the
thing that makes each project exciting is
engaging with new communities. Our work is
fundamentally about people and helping them make
their environment fantastic. I feel if you can
understand people and how they live you have a
better chance of designing something useful,
inspiring and current.
Who is Aprille?
My design background is in television, film and
fashion. After training in surface pattern
design I found myself in London working with a
design team for a fashion brand buying and
sourcing fabric and hardware. I later went on to
study make up design, which introduced me to the
worlds of television and independent film, where
it’s imperative to roll up your sleeves and get
involved with everything from stage design to
calming nervous actors. For me enthusiasm,
sincerity, listening and a sense of humour are
imperative for work and for life.
Nice things people have said:
‘I have worked with Tony on three projects and love the
way his designs merge a contemporary urban vibe with
playfulness and humour. He always delivers on time and in
budget, and both understands, and is happy to resolve,
the more mundane, technical and practical issues as well
as the creative ones. He also provides lovely illustrated
presentations of ideas which is really helpful in getting
partners or clients on board.’
Nicola Stephenson, The Culture Company: Commissioning
agent [email protected]
‘I have no hesitation in recommending Tony and find his
artistic work to be a very creative fusion in the area
between art and architecture. As a bonus, Tony is also
great fun and is easy to work with. He is also always
reliable with budgets and timeframes.’
Ian Banks, ATOLL: Commissioning agent
‘I've worked with Aprille over a number of years in
several different roles. She is calm, focused and forward
-thinking and a valued member of the team. She is as
creative as she is organised and is always enthusiastic
and generous with ideas. On a more personal note Aprille
is lovely to have around, supportive, funny and always
smiling.’
