Thank You

Thank you to the entire delegation that attended the Washington, D.C. trip to help the Chamber advocate for the needs of the Brooklyn business community.

We applaud all of the companies that provided food products for a very successful Brooklyn Night in Washington, D.C.: Alad-din Bakers, Aunt Butchies, Brooklyn Bangers, Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn Brine, Brook-lyn Cupcake, Brooklyn Roasting Company, Brooklyn Seltzer Boys, Brooklyn Winery, Bruce Cost Ginger Ale, Coney Island Brewing Company, Cracked Candy, Damascus Bak-ery, Foxes U-Bet, Gillies Coffee, Grady’s Cold Brew, Jacques Torres, JoMart Chocolates, Joyva, Junior’s Cheesecake, Kings County Distillery, Li-Lac Chocolates, Michael’s of Brooklyn, Morris Kitchen, Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, New York Pretzel, Red Hook Win-ery, Sfoglini, Spoonable, Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pie, Steve’s Ice Cream, TMI Trad-ing, Tower Isles Frozen Foods, Tumbador Chocolate and Villabate Alba.

Special thanks to the entire Davidoff Hutcher & Citron LLP team, our federal gov-ernment relations representatives, for their guidance; our Board Chair Denise Arbesu for her leadership; and our Government Affairs Committee and co-chairs Toni Yuille Wil-liams and Gil Cygler for working closely with us on the agenda. Bravo to the dedicated staff of the Chamber. Their hard work was the foundation of the success of this trip.

Finally, without our sponsors, this trip would not have been possible: Delta (Pre-senting Sponsor), Big Bus Tours and Inves-tors Bank (Lunch Sponsors), Airbnb, NYU Tandon School of Engineering, NYU Lan-gone Medical Center, Time Warner Cable and New York Methodist Center.

The Chamber is now inspired more than ever to continue our mission of being a strong and effective advocate for job creation and overall improved economic conditions in Brooklyn.

TOGETHER WE’RE

Hunger is closer than you think. Reach out to your local food bank for ways to do your

part. Visit FeedingAmerica.org today.

HUNGER KEEPS UP ON CURRENT EVENTS, TOO.1 IN 6 AMERICANS STRUGGLES WITH HUNGER.

There are rare moments in life when the right email or phone call comes at exact-ly the right time. In fact, that’s precisely

how I found myself in my role as a chair for Vistage International in Brooklyn.

Ever since I started as a consultant with the German strategy consulting firm Roland Berger in 1991, I’ve had a knack for helping business leaders solve real problems. I have a mind for data, analytics and strategy and a true passion for applying those skills to help people develop innovative solutions. With these skills, I worked as an external consul-tant and then as an internal executive running strategy groups for Sony Corp. and Discovery International. I eventually became the presi-dent and CEO of the Association of Manage-ment Consulting Firms (AMCF).

However, I realized I still wanted more. I wanted to coach leaders in a more intimate, impactful way. I wanted to have a direct influ-ence on people’s lives and work collaboratively with leaders who desired to make real changes in both their professional and personal envi-ronments. Ultimately, I went off on my own to become an independent consultant in or-der to be on the front lines with CEOs and leaders making tough business decisions.

That’s when I received a life-changing email from Vistage asking me to accept a position as a chair for the organization. I accepted with-out hesitation.

As consultants, we tend to dwell on data, strategies and facts. Vistage is different, how-ever. It’s an opportunity to work with a con-sultant and a coach who really listens to and helps you work through your struggles. As a chair for Vistage, I’ve had to challenge myself to get out of my left brain and recognize that succeeding at the human element of business is most important. That level of empathy cou-pled with a willingness to discuss important issues spanning the purely business-oriented to the deeply personal, is what makes Vistage

chairs successful. As a chair for Vistage, my primary respon-

sibility is to build groups of business leaders with diverse skills, backgrounds and experi-ences. I look for people who are inherently extroverted and collaborative – team play-ers who are eager to learn. Once the group is formed, I facilitate monthly peer think tank sessions that use Vistage methodologies to process issues in each participant’s personal and professional life. We then agree to ac-tions and solutions they can utilize to solve their problems, and hold them accountable the next time we meet. In addition to these peer coaching sessions, I do one-to-one busi-ness coaching each month with members of the group.

If you’re a business owner or CEO of a company that is either established or rapidly growing, and have a strong desire to work with a group of peers to improve your perfor-mance and grow your firm quicker and more profitably than your peers and competitors, Vistage membership could be extremely valu-able and I’d love to hear from you.

“Part of making good decisions in business is rec-ognizing the poor decisions you’ve made and why they were poor. I’ve made lots of mistakes. I’m go-ing to make more. It’s the name of the game. You don’t want to expect perfection in yourself. You

want to strive to do your best. It’s too demanding to expect perfection in yourself.”

8 Brooklyn’s Progress • DecemBer 2015/January 2016

Small businesses are typically lean op-erations with tight budgets, particularly those that are just starting out. While

hiring a marketing and PR expert will yield results, many businesses simply don’t have the extra time or capital available to bring in the right person for the job. Luckily, there are some tricks of the trade that small busi-ness owners can implement in order to help increase brand awareness, attract new clients and grow revenue.

Plan, Plan, PlanBegin by developing a well-thought-out,

strategic plan that accurately describes your company, its products/services and key mes-sages. This will help focus your efforts and serve as a benchmark to measure success down the line.

In the plan, include publications that are widely read by your target audience (i.e. tra-ditional “major media” outlets, regional pub-lications, vertical outlets and relevant blogs) as well as social media influencers who dis-cuss emerging trends that are impacting your industry. Then, hone in on the key journalists within these outlets with whom

you want to develop a relationship. Having this strategy in place as a jumping off point will serve as the foundation from which you are able to activate your marketing and PR campaign.

Know Your Area of Expertise Before talking to journalists, make sure

you know the topics that fall within your area of expertise in order to position yourself as a thought leader in your industry. Nar-rowing down what you are able to discuss with the media will not only help you grow your client base, but it will give you credibil-ity amongst key journalists that cover your industry and region.

Next, find the best way to communicate your expertise to the public in a way that meets your company’s growth objectives. You can pitch yourself to reporters as an ex-pert on a specific topic in order to be quoted in a story they are writing, or you can write a contributed article on a specific topic and place it in one of the key publications listed in your strategic plan. Both options are great ways to get your name out there and pen-etrate your core market in order to position

your company for growth.

Communicating Effectively with Reporters

Journalists are looking for story ideas about broad market trends rather than de-tails on specific companies, products or of-ferings. To pinpoint larger trends, you can use information gleaned from client interac-tions, look at specific activity in your mar-ketplace and share any statistical data you might have on hand to help elucidate over-arching themes.

When reaching out to a reporter, either by phone or email, keep the content short and sweet, and don’t be afraid to follow-up if you don’t receive an answer right away. If you don’t feel comfortable proactively reaching out to reporters, there are tools available that can help. One such resource is Help A Re-porter Out (HARO), which connects jour-nalists with sources on specific focus areas, including business and finance, high tech, general interest and travel, among others. It is free to participate and is an easy way to secure coverage in targeted media outlets on topics that fall within your expertise.

Defining Successful Marketing and PR

Successful marketing and PR means that you have spread your message to your target audience, engaged key influencers and dif-ferentiated yourself from competitors. While hiring an outside marketing and PR firm can be expensive, especially large and mid-sized agencies, you can easily activate the above tips to get your company’s name out there in order to stand out in this increasingly crowded marketplace.

To celebrate their 50th year as own-ers of Gargiulo’s Restaurant in Coney Island, the Russo family recently oversaw a complete renovation and facelift of the famous eatery. After being devastated by Superstorm Sandy, Gargiulo’s now has a modern and updated look that appeals to all patrons.

“The Russo Family is happy to celebrate 50 years in business embracing all that is going on in Coney Island,” said Nino Rus-

so, co-owner of Gargiulo’s. “We are more excited today than we were in 1965.”

Gargiulo’s Restaurant was established in 1907 by the Gargiulo family. In April 1965, the Russo brothers – Michael, Vic-tor and Nino – embraced Coney Island as their new home and acquired the restau-rant from the Gargiulo family. The Russo family kept the name and implemented their Neopolitan hospitality and cuisine, making it the landmark that exists today.

On October 28th, the Brooklyn Cham-ber of Commerce hosted its Annual Membership Meeting and Trade

Show, featuring NYC & Company President and CEO Fred Dixon as keynote speaker. The event was held at Gargiulo’s Restaurant in Coney Island.

“Our partnership with the Brooklyn Cham-ber of Commerce strengthens our global pro-motion of New York City as the world’s most exciting destination,” said Fred Dixon, Presi-dent and CEO of NYC & Company. “Visitors want to experience the ‘authentic’ New York City, and that growing interest in borough neighborhoods and culture means the op-portunity for visitor exploration and spending throughout Brooklyn is greater than ever.”

The event — which saw over 500 attend-ees — also featured a presentation of the Brooklyn Chamber’s top 10 accomplish-ments of the year, including the first-ever Brooklyn Night in Washington, D.C., the CHEERS NY craft beverage festival and in-novative partnerships with both Google and Airbnb.

The Brooklyn Chamber’s leading achieve-ment was the creation of its Economic Assess-ment — a snapshot of the borough’s economy that provides insightful details on the real estate market, job growth, population, and flourishing and threatened industries, among other topics.

“Brooklyn is always one step ahead, and I’m proud that the Chamber continues to find innovative ways to keep up with this in-credible borough,” said Brooklyn Chamber President & CEO Carlo A. Scissura. “We cer-tainly made quite on impact in 2015, whether it was through fantastic events like CHEERS NY, BKLYN DESIGNS or Brooklyn Night,

incredible partnerships with Airbnb and Google, or the release of our Brooklyn Eco-nomic Report. I think it’s pretty clear, we’re not your grandparents’ Chamber.”

“I couldn’t be prouder of the monumen-

tal achievements made by the Brooklyn Chamber over the past year,” said Brooklyn Chamber Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “The Chamber is an amazing resource for the borough’s small business community — en-

suring proper healthcare, providing on-site service, and offering recruitment services, among others — which secure that Brooklyn businesses and our Members receive the sup-port they deserve!”

newsmakers

On December 1st, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce held the eighth edition of its popular Newsmakers series, headlined

by Meera Joshi, Commissioner & Chair of the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission.

The Commissioner & Chair discussed vari-ous topics during the event, such as the every-day role of the TLC, the impact of green taxis in Brooklyn, and the technological changes in the industry.

“As a longtime Brooklynite,” said TLC Com-missioner/Chair Meera Joshi, “it’s a privilege and a pleasure to share with these distinguished leaders how TLC initiatives help to move Brook-lynites, support Brooklyn’s vibrant economy and its drive for greater development.”

“The Brooklyn Chamber is honored to have had Commissioner Joshi speak at our News-makers event,” said Brooklyn Chamber Presi-dent & CEO Carlo A. Scissura. “As Brooklyn grows, so do its transportation needs, and there is no one better than Meera Joshi to provide in-sight into the role of taxis and for-hire vehicles in the borough.”

“Commissioner Joshi’s overview of the TLC and insight into the industry were both fascinat-ing and critical,” said Brooklyn Chamber Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “With so many individu-als who depend on these transportation options on a daily basis, it’s reassuring to know that the agency has a strong leader like Meera Joshi. The medallion taxis and other livery services are an integral and essential part of New York’s overall transportation network and economic engine.”

Newsmakers is sponsored exclusively by In-vestors Bank, and is held in conjunction with

NYU and the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership.“We are pleased to support the Brooklyn

Chamber’s Newsmakers series, which provides the business community with an opportunity to listen to and speak with New York City’s top government leaders,” said Investors Bank Chief Operating Officer, Domenick Cama. “Our Bank looks to build alliances between the public and private sectors, and we are eager to meet with Commissioner Meera Joshi and find out more about how companies can work together to help NYC meet its transportation objectives.”

“Transportation is one of the keys to the de-velopment of smart sustainable cities and is an area of focus for us,” said NYU Tandon School of Engineering’s Dean Katepalli Sreenivasan. “We are excited to have Commissioner Meera Joshi on campus to talk about New York’s City’s ve-hicular transportation needs and concerns mov-ing forward.”

“The Newsmakers series is a great opportu-nity to engage with our City’s leaders on some the most important issues facing Brooklyn,” said Tucker Reed, President of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. “We look forward to working with Commissioner Joshi as she seeks to enhance our City’s taxi system and improve transportation options that continue to make our neighborhood a great place to live, work, and visit.”

Previous Newsmakers keynote speakers in-clude Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, NYPD Com-missioner Bill Bratton, New York State Comp-troller Tom DiNapoli, and Public Advocate Leti-tia James, among others.

investors Bank and Brooklyn Chamber get Dyker Heights in the Holiday Spirit

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that Investors Bank has made a donation to fully fund this year’s

holiday lights on 13th Avenue in Dyker Heights. The avenue will be decorated with holiday sky-line lighting fixtures between 86th and 65th streets. The Brooklyn Chamber, with the help of local business owners and community stake-holders, is also in the process of forming a Busi-ness Improvement District on 13th Avenue.

“I would like to thank Investors Bank for their generous donation and for giving this wonder-ful holiday gift to Dyker Heights,” said Brooklyn Chamber President & CEO Carlo A. Scissura. “These holiday lights will beautify the 13th Av-enue commercial corridor, leading to greater foot traffic, a more pleasant shopping experi-ence for patrons and increased business for local merchants. The Brooklyn Chamber is proud to have facilitated this donation. Investors Bank is a terrific Chamber Member that is committed to improving every community they join.”

Investors Bank will be opening a new branch on 13th Avenue in the spring of 2016.

“We are pleased to support the Chamber’s activities by donating funds for the holiday light-ing display,” said Investors Bank Chief Operating Officer Domenick Cama. “During this season of

giving, the Bank and its employees are also as-sisting local nonprofits that help many families in Brooklyn and across New York City. As a community bank, we are focused on making a positive difference for the people and local busi-nesses in the many neighborhoods we serve.”

“I was pleased to allocate more than $20,000 via a neighborhood development grant to the Brooklyn Chamber so that the 13th Avenue BID effort could get a significant push forward. That’s why I am so happy to learn of Investors Bank’s co-sponsorship with the Chamber for the Holiday Lights decoration on 13th Avenue this year,” said Council Member Vincent Gentile.

“I would like to thank Investors Bank and the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce for teaming up to provide holiday lights along the 13th Ave-

nue business corridor in Brooklyn,” said Assem-blyman Peter Abbate. “The residents of Dyker Heights are known for decorating their houses in elaborate lighting displays, so it is great to see the commercial district festive and bright for the holiday season as well.”

“As the President of the 13th Avenue Mer-chants Association, I am always happy to see one of our merchants come forward with such intense support of our avenue and community, especially from a big company such as Investors Bank. Thirteenth Avenue is known as one of the few ‘mom & pop’ shopping strips left, so it is nice to see them give back to our small and friendly community. I think I can speak on behalf of all the Merchants of 13th Avenue by saying that this Christmas season, we will be thinking of and

thanking Investors Bank for keeping our avenue lit up and in spirit. May everyone at Investors Bank and in our community have a Blessed and Happy Season. And welcome Investors Bank to our avenue and to Dyker Heights, ‘The Christ-mas Light Capital of the World,’” said Dominick Sarta, President and supporting merchant of the 13th Avenue Merchants Association.

“On behalf of La Bella Market Place we would like to thank Investors Bank for their generous support in lighting the streets of Dyker Heights this holiday season,” said Nick Pesce, owner of La Bella Marketplace.

“I would like to welcome Investors Bank and thank them for bringing light to 13th Avenue. It’s always great to see change and expansion,” said Robert Pollina, owner of Pollina Pharmacy.

“Thank you to the Brooklyn Chamber for their efforts! This will create a festive atmosphere across Dyker Heights. I would like to take this great opportunity to send my best greetings to Assemblyman Peter Abbate, Chamber President Carlo Scissura, Regina from Investors Bank and the merchants on 13th Avenue – wishing all of them a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!” said Kenny Guan, Presi-dent of Guan Realty Corp.
