Join us as we try to untangle one from the other as we learn from both. We will spend our time in the classical and medieval world as we move from ancient battlefields to medieval convents.

Stories include Bride Comes to Yellow Sky by Stephen Crane, Paul’s Case by Willa Cather, Jilting of Granny Weatherall by Katherine Anne Porter, Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce, and Lamb to the Slaughter by Raoul Dahl.

AFTERNOON CLASSES (1-3 pm)

Sec 3: The Russian Bear’s Resurgence George Reklaitis, PhD, chair, history department, Brookdale

Russian President Vladimir Putin refers to the collapse of the Soviet Union as “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the [20th] century.” Since coming to office in 2000, he has worked to restore Russia’s place as a giant on the global stage. Russia’s military maneuvering against its Eastern European neighbors, its backing of autocratic regimes around the world, and its economic bullying tactics towards trading partners stir the echoes of Soviet maneuvering during the Cold War. As Russia’s global influence has grown, Putin has now set his sights on reminding former rival, the US, of its resurgent stature through cyber-warfare and nuclear posturing. We’ll focus on the history of the “Russian Bear,” as it emerged from the shadow of the Mongol Empire to become an imperial giant under the Romanov dynasty, and its assent to superpower status by the middle of the 20th century. Has the Bear truly come out of hibernation?

Sec 4: Astronomy For LifeSarbmeet Kanwal, PhD, physicist

Do you know the reason for the four seasons? Have you wondered why the moon cycles through its phases? or what causes a supermoon, a blue moon or a blood moon and why total eclipses are so rare? How do stars move in the sky and what is the relationship between astronomy and astrology? These questions and many more will be answered as well as an introductory exploration of some of the deeper mysteries of our wondrous universe.

HUMANITIES

Why Buddhism NowCheryl Bartholomew, Ph.D., adjunct professor, Monmouth University, Professor Emerita, George Mason University

The coming of Buddhism to the West may be the most important event of this century. Americans are wealthier and more comfortable than ever before yet we are ranked 17th in terms of the happiest countries in the world. Our culture today is concerned with social evolution; Eastern practices focus on individual insights and transcending suffering. Through the intersection of Eastern and Western teachings, philosophies, and practices we can become awakened and find happiness and joy. 3 SESSIONS Wed, Jun 6-20, 10 am-noonFee and Code: $65, XPHIL 070

Ireland At War; 1913-1923Henry McNally, M.A., M.S., Irish historian

During the ten year period of 1913-1923, Ireland was in a continual state of war. From the Great Dublin Lockout to World War I, to the Easter Rebellion, Irish War of Independence and Civil War, peace seemed to have completely vanished. We’ll look at these episodes, stressing the interconnections among them and examining how they affected the development, in 1923, of an “Irish Free State.” Included will be case studies of the men and women who played essential roles, most as heroes, a few as villains. 5 SESSIONSTues, Jul 10-Aug 7, 10 am-noonFee & Code: $79, XIRIG 130

Music Session With Max & Alice Music is an integral part of Irish Heritage. Explore the connections between Celtic and American songs, tunes, and dances.

A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint

their pictures on silence. ~Leopold Stokowski

Max Carmichael has been playing music for over 18 years. Initially, Max spent much of his early years absorbed in blues and American folk music. Curiosity and a love of folk music from around the world took him to India where he studied Hindustani Classical music for three years. Most recently, Max has immersed himself in the New York Irish scene, playing guitar, banjo, bouzouki, and tin whistle. He is a major figure at the Iona session in Brooklyn and played on their recent album. Max performs with several groups, including Daoine, Andy Lamy’s Hudson-Shannon Line, and he recently appeared at the Boston Celtic Music Festival with Calum Pasqua’s Parcel of Rogues.

Alice Breda Ryan spent her early childhood in Germany, with summers at her grandparents’ in Ireland. A graduate of the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, Alice has studied ballet, tap, jazz, flamenco, Bollywood, modern, flatfooting, and the old-style of Irish percussive dance known as sean nós. Since moving to New York City, Alice has performed with the McLean Avenue Band, Daoine, and at the New York Trad Fest. In 2015, she competed at the Fleadh Cheoil na hEirreann in Sligo in the categories of traditional singing and sean nós dancing. As winner of the GAA’s sean nós dance competition, Alice recently performed at Symphony Space in Scór on Broadway.

ASPIRING WRITERS CONFERENCEIndulge yourself in a motivating day of creative thought. A chance to learn from

accomplished writing and teaching professionals. Novice or pro, all are welcome. The only prerequisite is passion. Light lunch is included.

Participants choose morning and afternoon workshops with two featured writers.

Tim O’Mara is best known for his Raymond Donne mysteries about an ex-cop who now teaches in the same Williamsburg, Brooklyn neighborhood he once policed: Sacrifice Fly (2012), Crooked Numbers

(2013), Dead Red (2015), Nasty Cutter (2017), published by Minotaur Books and Severn House. O’Mara’s short story The Tip is featured in the 2016 anthology Unloaded: Crime Writers Writing Without Guns, and his novellas Smoked and Jammed appear in 2016 and 2018 crime trilogies from Down & Out Books. O’Mara taught special education for 30 years in the public middle schools of New York City, where he now teaches adult writers and still lives.

Choice of Morning Presentations: 10 am-noon

Before Page One: Getting StartedWhat preparation must you go through before you type that first word? Examine the importance of character, plot vs. story, time, setting and finding the “hook” – what you reveal within 20 pages that compels the reader to keep reading. Plus, a give-and-take discussion of the age-old question: Why should I care that you’re writing a book? Tim will describe the process he went through before “starting” his first novel, Sacrifice Fly. He’ll also share a list of dos and don’ts when it comes to grabbing the reader by the eyeglasses and not letting them go.

The Truth In MemoirWhat makes a voice authentic? How do we “tap” our memories for full blown sensory experiences? How many voices do we have and which one will come to the blank page? These questions and more will be discussed and examined through lecture, writing prompts, poetry and memoir. Explore and dig for fresh material and new ways of seeing your personal experiences.

Nancy Bryan is the author of The Blue Lantern, a collection of poems in the making for twelve years. She is adjunct English faculty at Brookdale, has taught creative writing classes and “Artist Way”

workshops in the community and for Lifelong Learning at Brookdale. She lead the first ever Narrative Medicine conference at Brookdale and believes in the therapeutic power of writing your story. Writing, to Nancy, is connection to others and to her self-a lifeline. She holds an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Choice of Afternoon Sessions: 1-3 pm

The Long Stretch: Maintaining MomentumOkay, you know who and what you’re going to write about, you know how to get and keep the reader’s attention at the beginning, now how do you keep the reader turning the pages until the last page? Tim will explore how and when to use dialogue, description of setting, point of view, sentence structure, sensory details, and all those other literary devices you slept through in middle school English. Wrap up with publishing business Q&A.

Introduction To Narrative MedicineLucille Clifton said, “In every room you enter, someone is going through something unbearable.” Rather than bear it alone, connect with others and yourself through writing exercises, close reading and listening. Discover the common threads of our human experiences. This kind of “narrative medicine” practice can be therapeutic in a safe and supportive environment.
