If your eyes water and you start sneezing up a storm when you get near your friend's cat or if every
spring and fall, you get a runny nose when you go for a walk, you may have allergies. An allergy is
your immune system's reaction to certain plants, animals, foods, insect bites, or other things. Your
immune system protects you from diseases by fighting germs like bacteria and viruses, but when you
have allergies, it overreacts and tries to "fight" ordinary things like grass, pollen, or certain foods. This causes the sneezing,
itching, and other reactions that you get with allergies. The substances that cause allergies (grass, pollen, foods, pet
byproducts, insects, etc.) are called allergens. When your immune system reacts to one of these allergens and you have
symptoms like sneezing or wheezing, you are allergic to it.
Some of these allergens like pollen from trees cause sneezing, a runny nose, itchy eyes and ears, and a sore throat. Others
such as foods, may cause hives (a red, bumpy, itchy skin rash), a stuffy nose, stomach cramps, vomiting, or diarrhea.
People may be born with a genetic or hereditary tendency to have allergies.
Sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference between a cold and an allergy because the symptoms can be similar. If your
cold symptoms last more than 2 weeks or your nose and eyes itch, you probably have an allergy instead of a cold.
Your doctor will probably suggest ways to stay away from the allergen or prescribe a medicine for you to try. Allergy
medicine can be pills, liquids, or even sprays for your nose. If your allergies aren't too bad or if you can avoid the allergen
completely, you might not need to take medicine — staying away from the allergen might be enough to control your
allergy. People with food allergies have to learn to avoid any foods that have the ingredients they're allergic to. Your
parents and your doctor can help you read the ingredients on food labels. Luckily, many kids outgrow allergies to milk,
eggs, wheat, and soy, but allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, and seafood usually last.

The Special Education Department is beginning to prepare for annual reviews of our
students’ IEPs (Individualized Education Plan) in order to prepare for next school
year. Each student will be assessed to determine their progress for this school year
and determine what goals and objectives would be the most appropriate for the
coming school year. Parents, please look for an invitation to your child’s IEP meeting
coming home to you in the near future. Please plan to attend these meetings if at all
possible, as your input is vital to ensuring that your child makes consistent progress in
gaining the academic skills they need in the classroom. It takes the whole team to
make our student’s successful! Thank you.

The Columbia Marionette Theatre reached all K4-5th grade students at Brookdale with an instructional, environmental message on May 26 in their school
cafeteria through a puppet show. Singing trash cans and trash monsters were just a few of the characters
that taught the children that litter trashes everyone in this fun program. The anti-litter show, Litter Trashes Everyone, sponsored by Palmetto Pride, helped make
the students more aware of the importance of maintaining a clean environment.

Summer is around the corner. The kids will be out and family vacations will be underway soon. However, it's also im-portant to view this as a time to get your child ready for the new school year ahead. Parents often find it hard to fig-ure out what to do to ensure that their children are productive throughout the summer. There is more than one way to keep your child learning and growing while they still have fun. The truth is you don't want to stop the learning process even though it is summer. To succeed in school and life, children need ongoing opportunities to learn and practice es-sential skills. This is especially true during the summer months.
The amount of reading done out of school is consistently related to gains in reading achievement. Students who read more read better; they also write better, spell better, have larger vocabularies and possess better grammatical skills. The key predictors of positive reading development are success when learning to read and numerous opportuni-ties and experiences with reading. Children who enjoy reading will read more and become proficient at the same time.
Here are the ABC’s to improve reading over the summer.
Access to books.
Books that are “just right” they match the child’s reading level and interests.
Comprehension-monitored and guided by a teacher, parent, or effective
reading program.
*Summer Reading Tips*
Be a reader yourself. When you read newspapers and books and write letters and lists, you show
your young child how reading and writing are useful.
Set aside a consistent time each day for reading or a read aloud. Choose a reading or a read-aloud time that fits
your family’s summer schedule and stick to it every day.
Connect reading and read-aloud choices to summer activities. Read your child a book about the beach, such as “Sea,
Sand, Me!” When you read and discuss books about things your child has experienced, you help him learn important
vocabulary and extend his understanding of experiences.
Check out summer programs at your local public library. Many feature special story times, sing-alongs and puppet
shows during the summer.
Look at letters and words as you enjoy summer activities. As you walk to the park, point out stop signs and letters in
street signs. You teach your child about specific letters and words while pointing out the many uses of print.
Take books along on outings. Pack some board books in your beach bag or picnic basket, and bring a stack of books on
long car rides.
