Week 4 already! The students and staff have their routines in place and lots of exciting learning is happening in each of the classrooms. This week has been an especially busy week with lots of Professional Learning opportunities for our staff. We have also had the pleasure of working side by side with Newcastle University in their Quality Teaching Rounds (QTR) Research Project, which will continue over the next 18 months. QTR is an approach to teacher professional development that involves teachers working in groups to observe and analyse each other’s teaching using a framework called The Quality Teaching model. We look forward to this partnership and the opportunity to be reflective in our practice. Miss Hedley and I attended a 2 day Positive Partnerships training at Maitland District Office this week. Positive Partnerships is a National project funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training through the Helping Children with Autism package. The program was delivered by Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect). “Positive Partnerships provides a range of programs and resources to assist teachers, school leaders and other education professionals to support students on the autism spectrum in the classroom and other school contexts, and create an ‘autism friendly’ school culture. It provides practical ways to strengthen partnerships between parents and school staff and promote improved learning outcomes for students on the autism spectrum.” www.positivepartnerships.com.au There will be an opportunity for parents to attend a Positive Partnerships workshop later this term, and we would encourage parents and guardians of students with students on the spectrum to attend. An invitation will be sent home with all relevant details in the coming week. Design Thinking – 3D Printing Mr Ingram, Miss Hedley and Mrs Burley were in Sydney this week attending a Makers Empire workshop. We are excited to introduce Design Thinking, as part of our Project Based Learning work and are attending professional learning sessions with Australian experts in this field. We are currently waiting for our delivery of three 3D printers in the next 2/3 weeks and will run a design project with our Primary students, as part of our partnership with Makers Empire. Student designs and 3D printing will be selected and showcased in Sydney early next term. We will also be offering a parent workshop, where you will be able to see and play with our range of technology devices and 3D designs tasks. We are so excited about the opportunities we are able to offer our students here at Broke PS. Milbrodale, Jerry’s Plains, Kirkton and Mt Pleasant students will join together to help support the relationships of our great network of small schools. Bilbies News The Bilbies have had a fun start to 2019 and are continually surprising themselves and I with their learning abilities and new skills. The beginning of the school year has focused on reading, letter and number recognition and a whole lot of hands on and fine motor activities. The Bilbies are excited about library, outside adventures, learning new skills and dancing. The class is ready to embark on their first mini outcome for the project ‘Kind Words, Strong Mind, Positive Attitude’ which is creating music. The class have been having discussions on what makes them happy (avocado and dirt bikes) and what tools they can use to ensure they are able to recognise and manage their emotions. Music is the first tool the class will discover and will see the students be hands on with instruments, dance and then create music on the iPads.
