Sometime Lent is not my favorite season of the year. It is a lot of work (for myself, the secretary, and the organist). So often during Lent I am praying for the end of the 40 days. So today as I look back, I realize it is over! This year is flying by. As I realize this I need to stop and look back. What have I/we done? We laid to rest some wonderful older people (members of our congregation and community) and baptized a few younger ones. We had a great youth lock-in and started a new Sunday morning class. We ate a yummy Scout spaghetti dinner. We celebrated a rising attendance pattern in worship as we welcomed snow birds, some former members, and visitors. Brodhead United Methodist Church

April 2016

Do you feel like this year is flying by? I can tell you that I feel that way. My babies turned 4 months old in the middle

of March. 4 months! How did that happen? Lent has come and gone. Can I tell you a secret? Sometime Lent is not

my favorite season of the year. It is a lot of work (for myself, the secretary, and the organist). So often during Lent I

am praying for the end of the 40 days. So today as I look back, I realize it is over!

This year is flying by. As I realize this I need to stop and look back. What have I/we done?

You celebrated Pastor Irv Case’s ministry as I was gone on maternity leave. When I returned we talked about

change and tradition. I wasn’t back long before Lent was upon us. Then for 40 days we did our 40 Day Challenge:

40 Days to a Healthier Heart. We worked on gaining the traits of generosity, happiness, cooperation, empowerment,

peace, love, forgiveness, faithfulness, and hope. This happened in service on Sunday, Supper and Service on

Wednesdays, and daily using our purple 40 Day Challenge sheets.

What else has happened in these last three months? We laid to rest some wonderful older people (members of our

congregation and community) and baptized a few younger ones. We had a great youth lock-in and started a new

Sunday morning class. We ate a yummy Scout spaghetti dinner. We celebrated a rising attendance pattern in

worship as we welcomed snow birds, some former members, and visitors. March also brought a new member class

so now our church family is a little bigger!

Yes, this year has flown by! Let’s not spend too much time looking back. We don’t want to stall out by keeping our

eyes focused on the past. Many exciting events and topics are planned for the future! This month alone has Camp

Sunday, Pig Wars: Wet Pig Edition, VBS kickoff, Confirmation trivia day: Parents versus students, and Confirmation.

We are also updating our family album by taking a new pictorial directory.

May is our Attitude of Gratitude month! So we will thank teachers, mothers, the Holy Spirit, service men and women,

freedom, our graduates, and fathers.

That’s a lot going on here at Brodhead UMC! You don’t want to miss a moment! So stay tuned for all the details and

we hope to see you involved in these and many more events in the future!

God Bless,

Pastor Krystal Goodger

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is:

To know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ.

To develop a creative supportive fellowship. To expand concepts of mission through participation in

the global ministries of the church.

UMW

Mustard Seed- Save the Date!

Lydia Circle

The Lydia Circle will meet April 5th and go over Lesson 14 with Mary. Our hostess is Janice, we will meet at church and please bring food to share.

Read It and Reap ... Our May UMW Read “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption” by Bryan Stevenson is a powerful, true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us and a call to fix our broken system of justice. Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need...the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system.

Check out a copy from our wonderful library and find your favorite cozy reading spot, as we together read about his experiences. On Wednesday, May 11th, we will meet at 7 pm at Linda Gissing’s home in Monroe for a lively discussion of this social action book. All women of the church are invited to join us...but please give Linda a call to reserve your spot.

Sewing Circle

The Sewing Circle meets on the second Tuesday of each month, at 9:00 a.m. Put April 12th on your calendar and come join us, in the basement of the church. All skill levels are welcome!

We’d love to have you come and join us at Mustard Seed on Saturday, April 9th! We will gather at church at 9am to study Liz Curtis Higs “Flight Plan”. This is chapter two in her book Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible. Our focus will be on Hagar, who we will discover is so much more than Sarai’s handmaid.

Please contact Sue Wolter at 897-2221 with any questions.

The Purpose of United Methodist Women

April brings sunshine and showers and an awakening of flowers and our spirits. The UMW will be meeting

on April 28th for a program given by Caroline Kamps, titled "Mother's Day Giving". We will meet at

1:00 p.m. for the meeting, and follow it with dessert provided by Carol Kaderly and Bernice Swartz. We

encourage new members to come and experience what the UMW do.

The District Spiritual Growth Retreat is April 16th, at the Midland UMC, in Black Earth. This is a day well

worth attending, meeting old and new friends throughout the Southwest District, learning more about how

our churches are connected, and learning more about spiritual growth. If you can attend, contact

Janice Davenport and she will register you and give you a ride.

CONSTIPATION

Last month I addressed diarrhea, now let’s focus on the other end of the spectrum and look at constipation. As a rule of thumb, constipation is generally described as having fewer than three bowel movements a week. Occasional constipation is common and may be the result of a change in diet, routine or medication. Chronic constipation is infrequent bowel movements or difficult passage of stools that persists for several weeks or longer.

Chronic constipation may need medical diagnostic workup and intervention, especially if you experience unexplained and persistent change in bowel habits. This can be a sign of a serious medical condition such as cancer and may lead to bowel obstruction or bowel stricture. Other medical conditions such as pregnancy, diabetes or hypothyroidism may also contribute to the problem.

Diet and lifestyle changes often help alleviate constipation. The first change should include increasing fluids and fiber in the diet with such foods as whole-grain breads and cereals, legumes, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Make these additions slowly to avoid bloating and gas. Another change should be exercise to help improve muscle activity in the intestines. Walking helps the bowel get moving! Last, even though it sounds simplistic, don’t ignore the urge to have a bowel movement. Allow time in the bathroom without distractions and feeling rushed.

Occasional laxatives may be in order. The types of laxatives include: fiber supplements, stimulants, osmotics, lubri-cants and stool softeners. They can be purchased over the counter. Prescription medications are also available. You may need a combination of these and it is recommended that you consult with your medical provider to determine the most appropriate medication regime for you.

The following are a couple of “recipes” that you might find helpful for natural relief of constipation:

FRUIT BALLS POWER PUDDING

8 oz raisins 2 cups pitted prunes

6 oz pitted prunes 1 cup applesauce

1/4 oz senna leaves or 4 Senocot S tablets ½ cup prune juice

Grind in blender 1 cup unprocessed bran

Roll 2 TBSP into a ball Grind in blender, add prune juice if too thick

Roll in graham cracker crumbs Let set up in refrigerator

Freeze, eat one ball at a time

Keep things moving and be proactive, if changes occur, by informing your medical provider!

Vicki Evenson, Parish Nurse

The next Noisy Can Offering will be April 17th for Camp Grants!

Do you have a picture of a church activity or group? Please email them to [email protected] to have them posted

on Facebook, website or the newsletter! Thank you!

Confirmation Sunday

Please join us for worship on Sunday, April 24th as we welcome our newest member! We are excited to have Grant

complete the Confirmation class, and look forward to his continued growth and maturity in his faith. We celebrate his

accomplishment and look forward to him officially becoming a part of our church family as he commits his time, talents, and

treasures. Congratulations Grant! Confirmation is not an end, but a beginning.

Picture Day!

It’s time! We are updating the Church Directory! We are pleased to announce Lifetouch will be

here the weekend of April 1-2 to take family pictures. We will begin scheduling sessions for

Friday, April 1st from 12-7pm and Saturday, April 2nd from 9-4pm and

Friday, May 6th from 12-7pm and Saturday, May 7 from 9-4pm.

Everyone is encouraged to schedule their appointment to have their picture taken and get their

free 8X10 and church directory!

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts & prayers during this

difficult time. Thank you for the cards, visits, food, prayer shawls,

and the funeral luncheon. Thank you Pastor Krystal for the service

and Kay Case for the music. We are a church family!

PARKING LOT UPDATE

By now most of you should have received a letter from the church detailing our newest project. We are looking toward

paving our handicap accessible parking lot. The project will make the parking lot safer and easier to negotiate. This will be

beneficial for anyone in our congregation- walkers, stroller, or even crutches. We are so excited about the project and we

hope that you are too!

On the bulletin boards outside the office you will soon find more information about the project. Check back frequently to see

how we are doing in our fundraising goals. The hope is to start and finish this project this summer. Wouldn’t it be great to

have a beautiful new parking lot to celebrate on Rally Day in September?!

In the letter that was sent out a few weeks ago was a pledge card. We would ask

that you fill it out and return it by April 10th. Thank you for your gift above and

beyond your regular giving. If you did not receive a letter and would like the letter

and the pledge card, please contact the office. Please prayerfully consider how

you may help with this much needed improvement.

Thank you for your amazing generosity and God Bless!

The UMW are collecting garden seeds to send to Jackson Area Ministries in Jackson, OH. If you have some seed packets laying around that you would like to donate, please bring them to church. Please have them at the church by April 8th, to give them time to be mailed. The seeds can be given to Janice Davenport, put in the box by the sink in the back Sunday school room. There is a flier on the UMW bulletin board and the entrance hallway, for more information.

Mission Opportunity! Donate a few extra seed packets!

You are invited to attend a concert!

Many of you have gone to the Fireside for their wonderful dinner and play. Did you know that they also have a Christian

Concert with a chicken and fish buffet? The price is much less than the other plays, and the food and music are excel-

lent. The UMW are planning a trip there, and would like you to join us. On Tuesday, August 9th, we will leave the church

parking lot at 10:00 a.m., to arrive in time for seating and lunch. The cost is $35.95, and if we get 18 people to go, we will

not have to pay tax. They suggest a $3.00 tip to the waitress, which is not included. I

would like to know if you are interested, by the end of June, and have final payment by

July 14th. Please contact Janice Davenport at church, or by phone 897-8386, if you

think you may attend, as I need to know how many to plan for. Put it on your calendar

as a possibility, and save the date. There are brochures on the book shelf at the back

of the church.

VBS Kickoff Sunday Are you ready to hear one of the new songs

April 17th for VBS this year? Want to know what the 9am! Snacks are going to be? Join us for the VBS Kickoff on April 17th at 9am for a sneak peek!

Holy Humor Sunday

Join us for worship on Sunday, April 10th at 9am as Carter Jorgensen, a camp counselor, gives the sermon! We will sing some camp songs, learn a game, and hear how influential summer camp can be for kids! After service, we will meet in Fellowship Hall for some camp treats, games, or silly songs!

SUMMER CAMP

It is not too early to start thinking about attending one of the many summer camps offered through the Wisconsin United Methodist Conference camps. Please check out the summer camp program

books in the Welcome Center or Sunday School classrooms, Danielle Jorgensen, or visit www.wiumcamps.org for more details. Brodhead UMC office has grants available for any child or

family that would like to attend one of the many camps this summer! See you at CAMP!

Lake Lucerne and Pine Lake Camps provide inspiring settings for spiritual growth in the heart of Wisconsin.

Open year round, the camps offer a variety of accommodations and activities in wooded and lakeside settings, where you can feel close to God’s wonderful creation.

Summer camps for all ages are provided at each site, children learn of God’s love, youth develop their leadership skills and spiritually. Adults enjoy learning and community, and families share time to bond and grow together.

New Bible Study ~The Family Project

Why do families work? Because God Himself designed them! Thriving families will lead to thriving communities, and thriving communities will transform the world. People will find purpose, joy and redemption; and generation after generation will create a positive legacy. This is a great study for all families, new and old alike! Join us in the Senior Youth room on Sundays at 10:15am through May 15th

Pig War: Wet Pig Edition Kickoff! Sunday, April 10th!

It’s that time again! The time we raise money to purchase pigs for families in Cambodia. We are going to have a little fun this year and do it a little differently. Which ever Sunday School class raises the most money will have the pleasure of dunking their teacher in a dunk tank on the last day of Sunday School (May 15). If the congregation raises enough to purchase 30 pigs at $55 a pig , we can dunk Pastor Krystal! On May 15th, we will have other pre-approved people in

the dunk tank as well. You can take a shot at dunking them for $.50 a ball!!

Calling all kids! April 27th at 5pm! Watch for pledge sheets soon!

Healthy things grow, growing things change, changing things challenge us,

challenge forces us to trust God, trust leads to obedience, obedience makes us

healthy, healthy things grow.

All articles and pictures for the April newsletter are due to

the office no later than Saturday, April 16. Thank you.

Family Promise The next opportunity to serve in Family Promise is coming up May 15-22. Please be

praying for our upcoming guests, as well as how you can serve in this mission.

Yours In Christ,

Julie Hodgson

Custodian’s Corner

Spring work day has been calendared for April 23 with a rain date for May 14.

Some of the projects we will be working on include:

Window well clean out, trimming of shrubs, removal of trees for parking lot and some touch

up of yellow paint. Lots of fun!! I will have coffee and donuts ready at 8am. So, bring your

saws, trucks and trailers to help haul brush to the city compost.

Respectfully submitted,

Denise

Relay For Life Team

Our church's Relay For Life team is in need of a captain/co-

captain. We would like to carry on the tradition of having a Relay For

Life team to honor and support our church family and

members that are dealing with cancer or who have lost their battle with

cancer.

The person(s) taking on the responsibilities of a team captain/co-

captain would register the team and would work with the team to plan

their activities. The Green County Relay For Life event will be held in

Brodhead on Saturday, June 18th. For more information about being a

team captain or team member, please contact Jo Ann Steuri, 728-2980.

It is softball time again!

Our church has 2 softball teams in the Sunday evening Church softball league. We are

in need of new players! It is a coed league which is played for fun and friendship.

Players must be age 16 or older by September 1st. Experience is not required, but

would be appreciated! Please contact Jay Jackson at 897-2616 if you are interested in

joining Team 2!

If we have failed to list your name,

or have listed it incorrectly, please

accept out apologies and let us

know so that we may correct our

records.
