    WILDLIFE

    THE KING PENGUIN

You will have the immense privilege ofobserving majestic King Penguins in

South Georgia. These placid animalshave a hard life, just like that of theirclose cousins, made famous in the filmMarch of the Penguins. They areonly to be found on this sub-Antarcticisland and are exceptional swimmers, thanks to the streamlined shape of theirbodies, some 90 cm in length. Theyare easily recognisable for their bright

yellow head and neck and their greydorsal feathers. They live in coloniesthat can number many thousands of

birds, walking upright or sliding alongthe ice on their bellies.

    THE GENTOO PENGUIN

This species of penguin is smaller thanits cousins, standing just 80 centimetres

tall. Its coat is black and white, andit stands out for its red-orange beakand feet. White triangles highlight itsmischievous eyes. A speedy mover, itcan travel at 35 km/h when it diveson the edge of the ice floe. GentooPenguins prefer to travel in smallercolonies of a few hundred animals. Itis by far the shyest of all the penguincousins. It is not aggressive so is oftenthe prey of its natural predator, theSkua.

    THE HUMPBACK WHALE

The most impressive mammal of the marine world, the humpback whale can reach19 metres in length and weigh 65 tons. Easily recognisable for the many bumps or

tubercles on its head, the humpback whale is a playful acrobat, who enjoys showingoff his diving skills and landing with a huge splash. A friendly and very inquisitiveanimal, it will willingly come to meet you, swimming close to your vessel. It is a veryexpressive animal who is renowned for its long plaintive and melodious songs, whichit uses to communicate.

    THE CHINSTRAP PENGUIN

Renowned for its boldness and agility,of average size, this species is easily

recognisable for the fine band ofblack feathers around its throat. It isvery elegant with its black beak andpink feet. A sociable animal, it oftenshares its land with other coloniesof Gentoo or Adlie Penguins. Theirnests are made of small stones, forming protective basins. The parentsplace their babies in the crche untilthey have acquired their adult coatthat protects them from the water. Thelargest Chinstrap Penguin colonies

are to be found on Low Island andDeception Island in the South ShetlandIslands.

THIS PEARLY WHITE LAND IS HOME TO A NUMBER OF ANIMAL SPECIES INCLUDING SEABIRDS, FUR SEALS, KING PENGUINS AND THEIR COUSINS, THE ADELIE AND GENTOOPENGUINS. EXPERIENCE THIS UNSPOILED, FASCINATING NATURE.

    THE WEDDELL SEAL

This furry seal is a record breaker, able to remain submerged for more than an hourand dive to a depth of some 600m. An endangered species in the 19thcentury, it is aprotected species today. Its pelage is dark grey and it has a spotted belly. To maintain

its access to the sea and be able to fish, the Weddell Seal has special teeth allowingit to make a hole in the thick ice. A peaceful animal that sleeps very deeply, it spendspart of the day in the water looking for food and takes lengthy rests on the coastal ice.

    THE BLACKBROWED ALBATROSS

This elegant bird of the polar seas, whose wingspan can reach some 3 metres, has

white feathers and a scattering of black on its wings. It beak and feet are pink andits eyes seem to have been drawn in charcoal. Albatross can live for up to sixty yearsand reproduce very rarely. They enjoy soaring on air currents, making deep dives tothe surface of the ocean, and performing impressive u-turns as they skim the waves. We often see them in the wake of ships: they will become your favourite travellingcompanion.

    THE ELEPHANT SEAL

This is certainly the most impressive member of the seal family. You cannot miss itscolossal silhouette and its nose in the form of a small trunk, which acts like a soundbox, allowing it to communicate on land. With its large round, black eyes it can

adapt to all degrees of luminosity, including the depths of the ocean. The largestspecimens can measure up to 6 metres and weigh 4 tons. In the summer its pelage isa dark brown but after it has moulted in autumn, it becomes a silvery grey.

    THE SNOW PETREL

The small Snow Petrel is easy to identify with its immaculate plumage, black beak andfine, dark grey feet. It is a very sociable bird and certain species form huge colonies

during the reproductive season. It is discreet and nests under fallen rocks. When ithunts for food, the Snow Petrel flutters over the surface of the water, looking for smallsquid and shellfish.

    THE FIN WHALE

The Fin Whale is a frequent visitor to the waters of the Antarctic Peninsula and is easilyidentifiable by its dorsal fin which is visible at the surface of the water. You will easilyrecognise it for its asymmetric markings, which are rare in animals: its body is a greyblue colour with a white underbelly, whilst its head is paler on the right side and verydark on the left. Fin Whales are smaller than Blue whales but can reach 20 metres in

length and weigh nearly 50 tons. They rarely jump out of the water and the spout theyblow can rise some 6 metres in the air.

The story of Antarctica is one of a unique land. By belonging to no-one, it belongs tothe entire world.

The existence of an Antarctic continent, the symmetrical opposite of the Arctic, wasmentioned by ARISTOLTE in ancient times. The idea was then dismissed until Ferdinandde MAGELLAN sailed around the south of the Americas in 1520 and saw the icysouthern lands. This led geographers to imagine a continent known as Terra Australiswhich would extend from the Tierra del Fuego to Australia.

Although James COOK was the first sailor to crossthe Antarctic Circle in 1773, the geographicalisolation and extreme climate meant that for many

years there were no other attempts to explore thisimmaculate land.

It was only in 1911 that the Norwegian explorer,Roald AMUNDSEN, managed to reach theSouth Pole, requiring superhuman effort to doso. Subsequently, expeditions like those of Jean-Baptiste CHARCOT, Adrien de GERLACHE andPaul-Emile VICTOR allowed us to learn moreabout this icy desert.

This vast expanse of ice sparks heroic vocations and many territorial aspirations, andMans relationship with it is a strange blend of fascination, tragedy and the competitivespirit. An object of desire, the Antarctic became a political object; possessing it wouldallow States to reconfirm their sovereignty. A number of countries strived to exercise theirrights over the land.

At the end of the 1950s, 12 countries chose the path of scientific cooperation; theAntarctic Treaty was signed during the Washington Conference and Antarctica acquireda unique status: military activities were banned there as was the extraction of mineralresources other than for scientific purposes. Today, just 4 000 researchers, from allaround the world, reside on this huge continent in their research stations. Consideredto be a nature reserve, the White Continent is also protected by a Convention on the

Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, and by a variety of internationalagreements on the protection of biodiversity.

Just a few thousand visitors each year have the privilege of visitingthe most mysterious of continents. Thanks to its state-of-the-art cruiseships, leaving from Ushuaia to sail towards the Antarctic Peninsula,South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, La Compagnie du Ponant

offers you the unique opportunity of experiencing a cruise with adistinct flavour of expedition and adventure.

THE ANTARCTICPENINSULA& SOUTH GEORGIAAntarctica: promise of an exceptional journey, the discovery of a truly unspoiled universe. The mythical white continent, which lay for a long time like a ghost of the map of the world, casts real fascination over us.

To reach the sixth continent aboard LE BORAL or LAUSTRAL, you will sail through thefamous Drae Passage and reach the Polar Front, maring the meeting of the Atlantic, Pacicand Indian Oceans. The magic continues as you arrive in Neko Bay, discovered by the Belgianexplorer, Adrien deGERLACHE. Even further south, nestled at the heart of a polar landscape, high cliffs appear, signalling the entrance to the spectacular Lemaire Channel. Further on, theancient whaling station of Deception Island will reveal its colony of Chinstrap Penguins.

Sailing on the LAUSTRAL, gives you the possibility of seeing not only the Antarctic Peninsulabut also South Georgia, a sub-Antarctic region formed by an underwater mountain chainthat extends the Andes to the Antarctic Peninsula. All the wildlife of the Far South can befound there. You will go ashore at the splendid sites of Gold Harbour or Fortuna Bay, walingamongst the penguins, and will be able to approach the elephant seals basking in the weaksouthern sun. But the highlight will come at Salisbury Plain which is home to more than250 000 king Penguins with their orange-yellow crowns.

The Austral sails through waters that are sometimes frozen, and is often escorted by killer whales, humpback whales and other cetaceans - a unique sight creating quite unique sensations!

    USHUAIA

Considered to be the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia is thecapital of Tierra del Fuego, lying at the very tip of Argentina looking outover the Beagle Channel. This surprising little town of 45 000 peopleis surrounded by mountains and fertile plains. The first populations of

this land were nomadic hunter-gatherers, who arrived on foot on IslaGrande more than 10 000 years ago.Nature lovers will be enchanted by the Tierra del Fuego National Parkwith its remarkable plant and wildlife, including beavers, albatross, guanacos and penguins. Here, forests cover the lower slopes of theAndean mountains which are crowned with snow-capped peaks - aunique and unforgettable sight.

DECEPTION ISLANDNestled at the heart of the South Shetland Islands, in the north ofthe Antarctic Peninsula, Deception Island is easy to recognise forits horseshoe shape. This island was once an active volcano whosecrater collapsed some 10 000 years ago. This produced a caldera

which was then flooded by the sea creating a natural port. Entranceto the port is via a narrow channel called Neptunes Bellows. For along time this was an important whaling port and the intensity of thisactivity has left traces that have withstood time.On the black sand of the volcanic beaches, there are remains ofabandoned huts that have been overrun by the extraordinary

wildlife, part of the treasure that Nature offers us there. It is on these

beaches of ash that the largest colony of Chinstrap Penguins in theAntarctic Peninsula has taken up residence. Excursions aboard ourZodiacdinghies will allow you to set foot on this expanse of land

where more than 100 000 pairs of penguins.

    NEkO BAY

Deep in Andvord Bay, we find this little corner of paradise at the footof an immense glacier. Neko Bay is without doubt one of the most

beautiful sights of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was discovered by theBelgian explorer Adrien de GERLACHE during his 1897-99 Antarcticexpedition. Mountains, snow, ice and unspoiled nature combine tooffer a unique landscape. Wildlife is as abundant as it is exceptional:sea birds such as gulls, Cape Petrels and Cormorants, as well asmarine mammals like seals, orcas and whales. Excursions aboard ourZodiacdinghies allow you to sail close to blue-tinged icebergs ordisembark near colonies of penguins, observe leopard seals baskingon the shore or watch the Antarctic Terns flying overhead.

    ANTARCTIC SOUND

A famous stretch of sea connecting the east and west of the AntarcticPeninsula, this strait is the junction between the Bransfield Strait andthe Weddell Sea. It is certainly one of the most spectacular sightsof the mythical White Continent and where most of the majestictabletop icebergs that calve from the ice floe tend to float. Atthe heart of this icy landscape, the polar light creates multiple

reflections, humpback whales live under the waters surface andthe broken up ice shelf floats freely, taking with it the Fur Sealsbasking in the sun.

QUOTE FROM JEAN-LOUIS ETIENNEThe Antarctic has the attraction of those inaccessible things thatinspire Man to passion. No-one comes back from a long trip tothe white continent unchanged. In this world without landmarks, where the only colours are white and blue, with no other soundthan the wind, the only solution for the visitor is to learn self-control. When you have managed to forget that it is cold, that thesilence is infinite, when you have freed yourself from the agitationof the world, you feel the happiness of harmony swelling inside, this pleasant sensation of calmly realising that you feel good andyou are where you dreamt of being.

    SALISBURY PLAIN - SOUTH GEORGIA

South Georgia is an unmissable destination within Antarctica. Thissub-Antarctic region is a peak emerging from the Scotia Arc, anunderwater mountain chain that extends the Andes to the AntarcticPeninsula. Salisbury Plain will be the arena for the most memorable

and the most authentic display of Nature. Formed by the withdrawalof the Grace Glacier, high mountains dominate time and space; theblue-tinged landscape demonstrates all the strength and beauty of theunspoiled nature all around. At the heart of this haven of peace, on thebeaches of the bay, a colony of 250 000 King Penguins has takenresidence. In the midst of all these orange-headed couples, Fur Sealstry to beat a path to feed with their young. Under the weak southern sunthat lights this glacial plain, clouds of birds fly on the wind, enchantingthe traveller.

LOG BOOK EXTRACT - BORAL December 2011We leave Cuverville Island which gently disappears from the horizon, leaving behind us the brown feathered Skuas keeping a beady eye on thepenguin colonies: Adlie and Gentoo Penguins welcome you and watch yourmovements closely. Then we headed north via the Gerlache Strait to reachDeception Island where you can disembar in the middle of the largest colony ofChinstrap Penguins in the Antarctic Peninsula. Sailing on the Weddell Sea: you

will experience the white silence, an extraordinary, enchanting atmosphere ofpeerless serenity. Here the sheets of ice that regularly collapse into the sea formthe immense icebergs, whose many different shapes are caused by the erosion

of the wind and the water. The last port of call on the continent is at Brown Bluffin the north of the Peninsula, in the Antarctic Sound. At the foot of an imposingcliff, some 745m high, you will discover some Gentoo Penguins and a colonyof 20 000 Adlie Penguins.

    LEMAIRE CHANNEL

The Lemaire Channel is a narrow passageway between the high cliffsof Booth Island and Cape Cloos, plunging straight into the sea. Itwas discovered by the German explore Eduard DALLMAN in 1873and then mapped and crossed by the Belgian explorer Adrien deGERLACHE in 1898 who gave it the name of his partner, CharlesLEMAIRE. It is 11km long and 1,6km wide and is a spectacular site, considered to be one of the most beautiful channels in this part of theworld, the Polar Regions with their mist-shrouded light. It is sublime andimposing, delicate and formidable, welcoming and inhospitable. Atthe Northern tip of the channel are two rounded peaks, often toppedwith snow, that are a delight for amateur photographers.

Around 8am, in the brilliant morning sunshine, weheaded in the Zodiacdinghies to a silent place: Gold HarbourIsland. Everything you would expect to see is present at this site:The magical landscape of a majestic blue-tinged glacier, sat ona rocky base of an intense grey, waterfalls sparkling in the sun, pouring down but not always reaching the ground depending onthe wind. The beach here is made of volcanic black sand, headingout towards a milky blue sea. What is there to say about thewildlife that swarms over this beach to the rhythm of the sun? Thedark forms of Fur Seals and Elephant Seals are like tiny nuggetsand the colonies of King Penguins like an unreal coating all aroundthem.

GRYTVIkEN - ExTRACT FROM A CONFERENCEgiven by Sophie FAVROLT - Naturalist Historian

The conference is entitled SHACKLETON, the last Hero? After Roald Amundsen conquered the South Pole in 1912, SirErnest SHACKLETON turned his attention to what he consideredto be the last great challenge in Antarctica: The crossing of thecontinent from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea via the Pole.To achieve this he organised the Endurance expedition. Thisexpedition was dogged with bad luck and his ship, Endurance, was a prisoner of the ice for many months and was slowlycrushed, obliging the crew to disembark. A series of adventuresfollowed that would cement SHACKLETONs myth.

During her conference, Sophie will tell you all about this amazingexploit that succeeded in saving a large part of the crew of

Endurance. During a shore visit to Grytviken, a former Norwegianwhaling station, passengers will have the opportunity to follow inthe footsteps of this great explorer and visit the tiny cemeterywhere he was buried.

    THE FALKLAND

ISLANDSA board LAUSTRAL, you will discover a world that is enchanting and fascinating forits strength and beauty. The ship will find its route through this sanctuary of ice, as the seaspreads out its sparkling white armour and reveals the secrets of the Antarctic, where Natureis fully in control. As the famous Drae Passage disappears from the horizon, you will be ableto see Neko or Paradise Bay and its former weather station, shrouded in the mist, encircled by

walls of ice and the nearby mountains. Further to the North, you will see the craggy coastlineof Wilhelmina Bay, named by the Belgian explorer Adrian deGERLACHEin honour of his

Queen. Floating ice caps, mountains topped with majestic glaciers, Crabeater Seals lazilystretched out on a block of sparkling ice - Nature offers you the most arresting sights here.

LAUSTRAL then charts a course north, heading for the Falkland Islands. Conquered, abandoned, recaptured and coveted, the Falland Islands (Las Malvinas) had a romantichistory until the war of 1982. This remote archipelago, near the tip of the South Americancontinent is home to beauty that is unique in the world. The relief of these islands was carvedover the centuries by the harsh and very windy climate. Yet, the Falland Islands are home to afantastic range of wildlife, the last sanctuary of the elegant albatross soaring graciously againstthe blue sky, with colonies of elephant sanctuaries basking at the foot of vertiginous cliffs.

What poet would be able to declaim thesplendour of this polar world?

What language could evoke its magic? We are captivated by the charm of this sight

that defieshe imagination and thatmy pen is incapable of describing.

LAUSTRAL will leave the world of ice and chart a course north toUruguay. You will finish your journey atMontevideo, the capital, a pleasant seaside resort of colonial charm

on the banks of the River Plate. Founded by the Spanish in 1726, it isthe youngest of the South American capitals and boasts a charminghistoric district with Spanish, Italian and Art Deco influences. In thepicturesque streets of Ciudadela, you can discover the ruins of thecity walls.

    PORT LOCkROY

On the small island of Goudier, you will have the opportunity tovisit Port Lockroy, discovered by the French explorer Jean-BaptisteCHARCOT in 1903. Initially it served as a relief and repair basefor whalers, but in 1944 Port Lockroy became a British base. Itowes its name to Edouard LOCKROY, a French politician and thepartner of Jean-Baptiste CHARCOT during his expedition. You willbe able to visit the small museum that retraces the life of the basein the 1950s. Since 1996, it has been open to the public duringthe short Southern Summer and is used for carrying out research onGentoo Penguins. Nowadays, this base is the most visited site ofthe White Continent and, thanks to its little store and post office, itis the only place to offer you the opportunity to write to your friendsand family and share this unique moment.

As I look out to sea, the sun is slowly setting, thegentle blues of the icebergs are becoming harsher, soon the dark blue of the crevasses and cracksis all that remains, then gradually, with exquisitegentleness, a pink hue washes over everything andit is so beautiful that I wonder if Im dreaming and Iwant to dream forever. It looks like the ruins of a

huge and magnificent city made of the purest marble, dominated by an infinite number of amphitheatresand temples built by powerful and divine architects.

    SOUTH GEORGIA & ANTARCTICA CRUISES

A cruise to Antarctica and/or South Georgia is primarily an expedition. Given the inaccessibility of the White Continent, we recommend you choose your insurance company carefully. Evacuation costs from the

Antarctic Peninsula are up to 100 000 US$ plus medical costs. Therefore, please be particularly prudent when choosing an insurance company, especially if you are insured by your credit card. In addition, it is mandatory to return the medical questionnaire, provided at time of booking,at the latest 90 days prior to departure. This questionnaire is very important in order to respect mandatory safety rules in polar zones. Any falseinformation on this questionnaire may lead to a refusal of your embarkation at the port of departure, without any possible recourse.

These voyages include activities such as Zodiaclandings (sometimes wet landings), Zodiacoutings, moderate walks to more active hikes. Allthis accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides. Considering the nature of the programs, a reasonable level of mobility is requiredto enjoy these expeditions.

Due to the exceptional nature of this itinerary, the calls/sites listed are only a guide. The nal route will be conrmed by the ships Captainwith priority being given to passenger safety. Pack ice may also force the Captain to change course at the last minute. His decision will be

based on advice from expert pilots who are present on board during our cruise in South Georgia and Antarctica. Zodiac landings or outingsaccompanied by your expedition team offer plenty of opportunities to discover and experience what Antarctica and/or South Georgia have tooffer at close range. These will of course depend on the weather conditions, the ice, the wind and the sea state.

We also recommend you follow the clothing instructions and advice you will nd in your travel documents.Argentina: ENTRY/ExIT REQUIREMENTS: Australian, Canadian, and U.S. citizensentering/exiting Argentina must have a valid passport and

pay a RECIPROCITY TAX. Fee may be paid online in US dollars by credit card. Consult www.migraciones.gov.ar.At time of print, the fees were as follow (subject to change without notice)- Australia: U$D 100 - (multiple entry valid for one year)- Canada: U$D 75 - (one entry) or U$D 150 - (multiple entry valid for 5 years from first entry)- USA: U$D 140 - (one entry)
