The next generation HXR is a new type of high voltage rib cooled motors, developed and designed by ABB. It has all our rib cooled motor knowledge from the past 100 years in it, but in a surprisingly small package. The motors provide a unique combination of small size, high power density, high reliability, low losses and easy maintenance. These features result in significantly lower total costs of ownership, not only making the owners life profitable, but also easy, thanks to very low and well-predictable downtime.

Introducing more know-how per kilogram

Optimized material for rigid frameAlthough the motors have less mass and a smaller frame, the structure is very rigid with minimal vibration.

Active cooling systemThe airflow technology inside and outside the motor is revolutionary. The motor has a better overall heat distribution which means better reliability.

Optimized for variable speed drive use By controlling the motor with a variable speed drive, you can optimize the motors performance, reduce the energy consumption to its minimum and control your process more accurately.

New installation features The motor’s construction is flexible and interchangeable. All of the components outside the frame, including the main terminal and auxiliary boxes, can be mounted into the most optimal position depending on installation needs. This means that one motor type can be used in various locations and applications.

Better serviceability The new motors are designed for easy serviceability and monitoring. You will have very easy access to all maintainable parts, fast grease changes as well as pre-designed fixing points for all accessories, devices and sensors.

High power densityThe new motor is a new bench mark in the rib cooled motor category. It not only gives you more power out of the same frame size, but also more power per kilogram.

Interchangeable structure. The main terminal and auxiliary box can be flexibly mounted on either side or either end of the motor, and can be done by changing the box location. One motor can be used in various locations and applications, if several identical motors installed at the plant, which leads to smaller investment required.

Powerful but cool all over. The motor’s running temperature is well balanced. Inner cooling is improved remarkably resulting that the temperature difference between the D- and N-end is perfectly balanced. This means longer lifetime for bearings and longer lubrication intervals.

It is all in the detail: the high power density, rigid but flexible construction, well balanced temperature as well as easy installation and maintainability.

The whole motor construction is optimized using the Cooling Fluid Dynamics method. This means the internal cooling is more effective and the external cooling airflow is always free, no matter which devices are added to the frame.

Wider feet with oval fixing holes. Wider feet provide more rigid construction and oval fixing holes gives more flexibility to installation.

Pre-designed fixing points. Readymade fastening places for accessories to remove all obstacles affecting to the air flow and the cooling.

Cable tray for auxiliary wirings. Clear cable routing keeps the airflow free and ribs easy to clean.

Improved coil design. In order to increase the power, ABB has developed more accurate coil forming tools in order to ensure that the active material is used more efficiently.

Low losses. The motor’s energy efficiency level is very high, minimizing the cost of running.

Flexible but rigid. The frame material usage has been optimized with Finite Element Method -modeling. As a result, the frame is very rigid with minimal vibrations complying with all main international standards. Combined with a stable running temperature, this results in very reliable motor operation.

High power density. Thanks to the optimized frame construction, effective use of materials in active parts and active cooling, the motor gives much more kWs per kilogram than more traditional designs.

Optimized rib construction. The shape, size and placing of the cooling ribs has been thoroughly thought through. The cooling surface area has been maximized and all obstacles removed to secure the free flow of air.

Flexible with a lot of standardized accessories. Mounting accessories is very straightforward, thanks to ready-made fixing points along the sides of the motor. Wide range of standardized accessories are available for the motor series.

Easy and fast to inspect. You can check the coil end and the bearings with an endoscope without removing the end shields.

Condition based monitoring. You can easily mount ABB MACHsense-P and ABB MACHsense-R monitoring devices to the motor’s pre-designed fixing points.

Perfect match with variable speed control. The motor is designed and optimized for variable speed drive use.
