    Deepwater, Arctic and harsh environment

    development projects require cutting-edge

    technology. They also require competent

    personnel with a cross-disciplinary perspec-

tive, who ocus on systematically understand-

ing how technology can be applied in vari-

    ous environments. DNV has developed

    industry standards and recommended prac-

tices or the oil and gas industry. Today, we

    possess unique worldwide multi-disciplinary

competencies, enabling us to support our

customers rom the very early phasesthrough to operations and lie extension.

    selecting the best concept

In a less than perect world, the only cer-

tainty is the unexpected. When evaluating

    alternative development concepts or o-

shore oil and gas projects, the novel tech-

nology involved contains high risks. As a

result, a protable project can quickly turn

into a nancially distressed one unless the

    unexpected has been considered and

quantied during the early stages o con-

cept and planning. We support a process o

evaluating these risks, by addressing a set o

    key issues:

How reliable is the technology, systemsu

    and equipment?

What are the consequ ences o ailure?u

    What can go wro ng?u

How are unplanned events actored intou

    business decision analysis?

As a project approaches detailed design,

and then execution, questions may arise

    regarding mission-critical equipment. DNV

oers services to eciently assess these

questions or projects in all phases.

    apply neW solutions conFidently

In the pursuit o improved perormance,

the industry must come up with new ideas.

DNV has worked closely with the internatio-

nal oil and gas industry to develop more

accurate ways o demonstrating that new

systems, components and solutions will work

    reliably. Our Qualication o Technology

    services combines a systematic risk-based

    approach with in-depth technical knowl-

edge, assuring our customers that their solu-

tions will work saely and in accordance with

    expectations and specied requirements.

Our Recommended Practice (RP) or quali-

cation o technology (DNV RP-A203) out-

lines the philosophies, principles and meth-

ods to be used in the qualication process.

We also check the de sign and veriy t hat

structures, system and equipment are built

    according to project or/and international

    specications. We believe that sophisticated

    technical solutions require an advanced

    verication ap proach.

    saFe operations

Failure o structures, systems or equipment

    may have catastrophic consequences. The

risk can be minimised through good integ-

rity management. DNV has, together with

the industry, established best practices and

developed tools that enable customers to

    saely reduce operating costs.

By applying transparent integrity logic or

structure, systems and components, the risk

or errors and misunderstanding are signi-

cantly reduced or eliminated. This ensures

    cost-eective and sae operations.

    looKing ahead

The world needs more energy resources. To

respond to this monumental challenge, th

international energy industry is moving into

    relatively uncharted territories, such a

ultra-deep waters, the Arctic region and

projects located in areas with challenging

fuid composition and long tie-back solu

tions. DNV stands ready to help the indus

    try succeed in these eorts.

Our vision is to make a global impact or a

sae and sustainable uture. By constantl

    developing new methodologies, understand

ing the new risk agenda, working hard to

manage risk, and improve saety and envi

ronmental perormance, we help the indus

try to take a step in the right direction.

Saely pushing the barrierat new rontiersFuture oil and gas reservoirs will increasingl be ound in deeperwaters and more remote locations. To operate in these areas, the oil

and gas industr must break new technical barriers. DNV can help outo do so sael.

A broad range o stakeholders, such as nan-

    cial institutions, shareholders, insurers and

the public, are ocused on saety and reliability

in the oil and gas industry. Consequently,

there is a declining tolerance o incidents

leading to death, injury or environmental

    impact. Through oshore classication, DNV

helps clients to ensure and demonstrate ade-

quate saety, reliability and regulatory compli-

ance, throughout the liecycle o an asset.

the dnV approachDNV Oshore Classication establishes

    basic requirements or Mobile Oshore

Units (MOUs), and veries the required

    saety standards during design, construction

and operation. It is based on both theoreti-

    cal analysis and practical experience.

The ollowing components are integral to

    the integrated, liecycle, risk management

    approach o oshore classication.

    Design approval

    Operating MOUs and Floating Production,

    Storage and Ofoading units (FPSOs)

requires subscribing to a policy o zero toler-

ance o ailure. However, there is a danger

    o wasting resources by over-speciying

requirements. While we normally issue clas-

    sication-based assurance independent o

location, our classication can also be

linked to particular locations and environ-

mental conditions, to meet the clients

    specic operational needs.

By applying this fexible approach, supported

by sound risk principles, we ensure that the

optimal path is taken in verication o

designs, that requirements and criteria are

appropriate and that the objectives o the

relevant standards are met. We achieve this

within an agreed and realistic timetable.

    Fabrication survey and coissioning

Prior to start o abrication, DNV assesses the

set-up and control at the yard and major sub-

contractors acilities. We also carry out sur-

veys and audits. This ensures that approved

drawings and plans are being ollowed and

that the yard is ollowing its own systems and

    producing the required quality. Ultimately,

    the abrication survey and commissioning

activities should conrm that the unit is built

    to pre-agreed standards.

    Certifcation o aterials and

    coponents (CmC)

Construction o MOUs involves a growing

number o potential providers o materials,

    components and systems. This creates

uncertainty about the capabilities o suppli-

ers, delays, and quality problems. Ultimately,

it increases the risk o incidents.

    Classication requires that materials, compo-

nents or systems be certied as meeting class

and regulatory requirements beore delivery to

the yard. This a vital tool or eliminating unnec-

essary supply chain delays. When coupled with

    supplier assessment pre-contract services, this

creates a powerul tool or the industry to uti-

lise in managing supply chain risks.

    In-service surveys

    Conrming continued adherence to stand-

ards is crucial to ensuring the saety o lives at

sea. DNV leads the industry in providing own-

ers and operators with customised MOU in-

    service solutions and capabilities, including:

    and to rigorously control risks.

DNV has actively supported Hess Corporationwith several aspects o the risk managemento a Floating Production Storage andOfoading (FPSO) vessel. DNV provided riskmanagement support through several dier-ent methods. This began with the acilitationo a hazard identication session and devel-opment o risk acceptance criteria or Hess. The outputs were used, along with theapplication o consequence assessment andrequency estimation, to determine the over-all FPSO risk picture.

The industry is ocusing on protection o its

    personnel, reputation, and the environment,

while maximising production at todays high

market values. Business unit and asset manag-

    ers must constantly improve operational

results and control the risks associated with

their operation. One approach is to minimise

downtime or maintenance and inspection by

scheduling them to take place at the same

time. The time used to develop the plans c an

the same risk basis is used in all analyses, giv

ing a unied risk picture or all parts o th

installation. It is easier to manage all integrit

    management activitities. Follow-up and repor

BPs biggest FPSO, Greater Plutonio, cameon-stream in Angola, during 2007. To exe-cute the proect, BP needed to establish anoperations unit. This required the establish-ment o a unied integrity managementplan, risk prioritisation o activities, and orall integrity activities to be closely controlledthrough a Maximo database.

DNV created a unied plan, by merginginspection and maintenance plans, based onconditions-or-work. We used Risk-BasedInspection (RBI) to develop a written inspec-tion scheme, with risk reported, per tag, into

Maximo. This plan covers the hull, topsides, cranes, process systems, moorings, ofoad-ing lines, and buoys. We also developed arisk-based inspection plan or the entireinstallation, loaded into the inspection man-agement database with relevant documen-tation and drawings read or execution.

Our assistance has speeded BPs decisionmaking process by providing the companywith a transparent plan. The single integritmanagement plan also makes it easier toreport integrity status and to schedule activi-ties in a manner that minimises downtime.

    manuFacturer product Quality

    assessment (mpQa)

    The DNV MPQA service provides:

A structur ed and methodica l approachu

    or objectively measuring a subcontrac-

tor or suppliers ability to produce prod-

    ucts to specied requirements

A quantitative ra ting system to measur eu

    status and progress

An objective ratin g servic e (second andu

    third party audits)

The MPQA is a generic rating tool, a pack-

age o services that assists companies in sys-

    tematically assuring quality within their

    subcontractors organisations.

How is mPQA dierent ro other

    QA audits?

When assessing a manuacturer, it is not su-

cient to concentrate on the product relatedissues only. It is also necessary to check that

these elements are part o an implemented

quality system which assures that the manu-

acturer is able to consistently make and

deliver products to the quality level required,

irrespective o whether the system is certi-

    ed to ISO 9001.

While the scop e or ISO is to veri y compli-

ance with the elements o ISO 9001, the

scope o MPQA is fexible depending on

needs. For example an MPQA scope could

be compliance with Class Rules and MSA

agreement. Although some o the generic

questions are similar to ISO 9001, the inter-

pretation and emphasis will be changed due

to the scope. Guideline synopsis or the audi-

tor instructions and special editions will

assist the auditor to ocus in the right area.

The fexibility oered with MPQA by selecting

5 dierent levels is not possible in ISO. The

lower levels or MPQA are product controlrelated while the higher level questions are

    linked more towards management control.

    MPQA auditors are knowledgeable DNV

    surveyors with the technical background

within the specic technical eld. MPQA

and the DNV surveyors would provide a

    natural link between classication/certica-

    tion and ISO 9001.
