Bicester Concert Band was formed in 1996 by a group of woodwind players from the local area. Gradually other instruments have joined the band making it today’s full concert band. The band contributes to many local events and plays every year in Garth Park. A highlight of the band’s playing year is when the band hosts the annual Christmas Concert in St. Edburg’s Church. The band comprises of people from various professions brought together through their love of music.
Bicester Concert Band welcomes players above about grade three, the ability to read music is essential but ‘rusty’ players are always welcomed. Abingdon and Bicester Concert Bands join forces once again to bring you memories of the Golden Age of the movie musicals. Wesley Smith is your guide on a fascinating trip through the history, people and songs from films and musicals of the early to mid-twentieth century. Broadway Rhythm features tunes from favourites such as Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma and, of course, The Sound of Music. Also included in the programme are solo and duet vocal performances from leading local singers.

Wesley and the bands are delighted to be supporting two local chari-ties through tonight’s concert.
Helen & Douglas House is a registered charity providing respite and end of life care for children and young adults with life-shortening conditions, as well as support and friendship for the whole family. The two hospice houses are bright, vi-brant and positive places, where the emphasis is on living life to the full, even when that life may be short.

Philip started to play bassoon at school, and has since then taken on saxophones, baroque recorder and electric bass. After reading music at Manchester University, he entered the the family business making paper and packaging. For ten years they sponsored a championship brass band and Philip was able to see and work with some great conductors at work, especially John Berryman and Bramwell Tovey, two excellent conductors with complementary yet wildly different styles.
Philip now conducts both the Abingdon and Bicester concert bands in Oxfordshire and the Abington Wind Band in Northampton. He is also a regular course tutor for music courses and runs playing days and clinics for groups across the country.

Sheridan trained at The Guildford School of Acting, specialising in Musical Theatre. He is perhaps best known as the winning vocal coach on BBC1’s
prime time Saturday night show Can’t Sing Singers, when he led the Birmingham group to victory in a spectacular Christmas live final. Sheridan also prepares students for TV shows such as the ITV’s X Factor and Stars in Their Eyes.
Seeing a need for an alternative and more dynamic approach to vocal/singing coaching, Sheridan launched his own company in 1998. Total Vocal is now a thriving and highly successful business, boasting more than 75 one-to-one students and many others queuing for a place. Periodically Sheridan showcases Total Vocal to demonstrate his students’ impressive talent. In addition to these sell-out shows Sheridan also offers his one-day workshops: Feel Good through Singing and Energise Your Voice. Sheridan is constantly bursting with new ideas and keen to remain at the cutting edge of vocal organisations.

She recently played the part of Dulcie in The Boyfriend, and has been offered a place to read Music at Nottingham University. Her passion for musical theatre has culminated in her decision to audition for two of the top drama schools in London for a place on their BA in Musical Theatre course.

Lucy is a vet who works in Bicester. She has always loved the musical side of life and since moving to the area 3 years ago, she has been very lucky to be able to sing and play flute not only with BCB but also with a 12 piece soul band, Bangtailfeathers. She likes to keep busy and when she is not playing music or trying to persuade the patients that she isn’t that scary really, she does silly things like sign up for half marathons (and regrets it later!).
