BROADWAY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH November 27, 2016 11:00 a.m. Living Abundantly First Sunday of Advent Welcome! We are glad that you have joined us for worship today. Visitors: Please record your complete address, as well as your name, on the registers. We’d like to send you a greeting! If you would like to take a short tour of the church building and grounds, meet one of our greeters at the Welcome Center after the service. Inclusive Language: Here at Broadway we have an inclusive language policy that recognizes and affirms the full range of diversity among persons engaged in the communication process. We are intentional that our imagery of God as well as our liturgy reflect that inclusiveness. We use a variety of pronouns for God, just as our commu- nity uses a variety of pronouns as we grow and learn beyond the binary. In the spirit of hospitality, please ask oth- ers for their preferred pronoun. The pastors are available to answer any questions you might have regarding the policy. The entire inclusive language policy can be found on the website. A further resource is Paul Smith’s book, Is it Okay to call God Mother?. Large print bulletins are available from the ushers. Prayer/Stewardship Cards: As you worship with the Broadway community today, you are invited to share in a personal way. The orange card that is in the pew pockets is for you to express how you are or might be in ser- vice to God and community this week. It is also a place for you to share prayer concerns. Use as much or as little of the card as you like. The cards will be viewed ONLY by the pastors. By placing this card in the offering plate you are symbolically acknowledging your gifts of time and talents to the glory of God. Song numbers with the designation “FS” refer to selections from The Faith We Sing books. All other selections are from the United Methodist Hymnal. Giving: Your contributions are needed for everything from special programs to basic operating expenses — both are deserving of your support. Please be as generous as you can in the year ahead. To give online, visit us at broadwaychurchchicago.com/give or scan the QR code at right. Thank you for your commitment to God’s purposes through our faith community!

“…I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round—apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that—as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year,

when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my

pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!”

S c r i p t u r e R e a d i n g Isaiah 9:6-7

For a child is born to us, an heir is given us, upon whose shoulders dominion will rest. This One shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the Strength of God, Eternal Protector, Champion of Peace. This dominion, and this peace, will grow without end, with David’s throne and realm sustained with justice and fairness, now and forever. The zeal of YHWH Omnipotent will accomplish it!

May God bless the speaking and hearing of the Word.

Amen.

[During the Time for Young Christians, you are invited to use the Prayer Cards in the pew pockets to indicate prayer concerns you would like lifted up in prayer during this week. They can be placed in the offering plate or posted on the prayer wall. Children are invited to Children’s Church in the Wesley Room following the Time for Young Christians.]

* S c r i p t u r e R e a d i n g Luke 1:46-47; 52-55

Mary said: “My soul proclaims your greatness, O God, and my spirit rejoices in you, my Savior…you have deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places. You have filled the hungry with good things, while you have sent the rich away empty. You have come to the aid of Israel your servant, mindful of your mercy — the promise you made to our ancestors — to Sarah and Abraham and their descendants forever.”

Here ends the reading of the Gospel. This is the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Thanks be to God. Amen.

November Mission Minutes

Each month, your donation to the mission minutes will be split between the two monthly projects; at least one is a UMC Rainbow Covenant Advance. If you want your entire donation to go to a particular mission, just mark your check or envelope with the specific name of the mission or advance. In addition: each month we offer an action alert; another way to put your faith in action.

Greater Chicago Broadcast Ministries (www.gcbm.org)

What do they do: Provide responsible broadcasting through the medium of television and online video. The only major market in the nation with a consistent presence in commercial television shaped by an inclu-sive ecumenical spirit of collaboration with the Protestant, Orthodox and Episcopal churches of greater Chicago. Over the years thousands of Chicago area clergy and laity have conveyed a prophetic voice of faith on the documentary broadcasts.

How: Television programming -- Sanctuary on ABC, Different Drummers on CBS. Check out their website for programming and past documentaries. The host television stations provide free studio and airtime, donate volunteer camera crew and editing services since 1956 through a rare enterprise that serves the needs of the wider community.

Windy City Habitat for Humanity (www.windycityhabitat.org)

Mission Statement: Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

About: Windy City Habitat for Humanity serves families and communities in the city of Chicago and Cook County. Their mission is to build homes, strengthen families and enhance communities in Chicago. They are part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God’s love into action by building homes, communities and hope. Windy City Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserv-ing homes; advocating for fair and just housing policies; and providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.

Action: Love

Love is an action. As our pastors have often said “Love always has the last word.” As we face the realiza-tion of what this new administration may bring to our family and friends, let’s work together to find ways to stand up for each other and to offer love, compassion, and wisdom in all that we do.

One way we can express our love is in gatherings breaking bread together. Whether you join BUMC for our Annual Tony Vega Memorial Thanksgiving Dinner on November 24th, 1:30-5:30pm; or spend the day with family and friends, start a conversation about where we can find justice and harmony or where we can work for peace, during these turbulent times.

You can donate throughout the month – make checks out to Broadway and designate “November Mission Mi-nute” (split between both) or “GCBM” or “Habitat.” You can also donate online.

TODAY — NOVEMBER 27, 2016

Adult Education Hour: Scarred by Struggle, Transformed by Hope by Joan Chittister “Everyone goes through times of pain and sorrow, depression and darkness, stress and suffering. It is in the necessary struggles of life, however, that we stretch our souls and gain new insights enabling us to go on. Building on the biblical story of Jacob wrestling with God and on the story of her own battle with life-changing disappointment, Sister Joan Chittister deftly explores the landscape of suffering and hope, considering along the way such wide-ranging topics as consumerism, technology, grief, the role of women in the Catholic Church, and the events of September 11, 2001. We strug-gle, she says, against change, isolation, darkness, fear, powerlessness, vulnerability, exhaus-tion, and scarring; and while these struggles sometimes seem insurmountable, we can emerge from them with the gifts of conversion, detachment, faith, courage, surrender, limitations, endur-ance, transformation, and (perhaps most important) hope. Each of these struggles and gifts is discussed in a chapter of its own.” Join us for discussion, Sundays at 10am.

Children’s Choir Unique Spirit rehearses on Sundays at 10:15am. For more information, please contact Ruthanne ([email protected]), Jenn ([email protected]) or Emily ([email protected]).

Blue Christmas Service at Wellington Avenue UCC (615 West Wellington Ave) Honoring the Journey. It was not the way she expected it would happen. The fear and uncertainty, the anxiety and stress. Having your first baby should be a quiet homey time, with lots of support and all the usual comforts in place. But no. This was an ardu-ous journey. A painful one. A long and worrying one. A lonely and uncertain one. That is the story of the first Christmas. And if we look honestly at our lives, not much has changed since those days. The human journey is still not easy...and yet...most of us, in one way or another, have been conditioned since childhood to expect Advent and Christmas to be a joyful time. Sometimes we can't help feeling guilty for not joining in the fa, la, la, la and for not feeling quite up to decking the halls. The “real” story of Christmas is not just Mary’s and Joseph’s difficult journey to Bethlehem. It is also about our journeys, with all their uncertainties and potholes, disappointments and deprivations, sorrows and losses. We are not alone. And during this season of hype and expectation, we need one another. Join us at 7 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 14 in the sanctuary at Wellington Avenue United Church of Christ for a warm and supportive time of candlelight, music, meditation, prayer and sharing followed by light refreshments and fellowship in the Narthex.

“God calls Broadway United Methodist Church to be a faith community embracing the diversity of our Chicago neighborhood and larger community. We welcome all persons – celebrating the human family’s God-given diversity of race, age, gender, sexual orientation, and physical or mental capacity. We also welcome persons of all social and economic classes and faith backgrounds. At Broadway, we are accepted into God’s nurturing family, which invites us into spiritual growth through worship, study, mission, and social action. We are grateful for the opportunities God gives us to experience and share the love of Christ.”
