Remarkable…
His resume includes Baptist minister, author, lobbyist, and chairman of the Religious Freedom Coalition. Notable accomplishments, certainly. Perhaps most notable, however, is that Rev. William Murray is the son of America’s most prominent and controversial atheist, Madeline Murray O’Hair. In 1970, Murray used her then 13 year-old son to file a lawsuit against Baltimore City Public Schools. In the suit, she asserted that her son suffered “bullying” for having to participate in class Bible readings and that such readings in public schools were unconstitutional. She eventually won
the case and the baby was thrown out with the bathwater as it is now commonplace on many campuses to ban or restrict all Bible readings, for teachers to fear mentioning their own faith in the classroom, and for many Bible clubs to be refused admission or space to meet. Click here, here, here, and here for some recent conflicts. Ms. Murray later sued NASA seeking to prevent astronauts from praying or reading the Bible during space missions, and she sued the city of Baltimore again this time seeking to remove tax exempt status from a local Catholic church. Remarkably, perhaps miraculously, her son William, used by his mother to ban the Bible from schools, became a Christian and later a pastor. On this day in 1980, William converted to faith in Jesus Christ. “I had heard many times in various churches [we were challenging] that all
one needed to do was admit guilt and ask Jesus in. I had not made that one step, to ask Him into my heart. I knew I must take that step, and I did so on that night. God was no longer a distant, impersonal ‘force’. I now knew Him in a personal way.” What can God do? Maybe the better question is, what CAN’T God do? Throughout February we will explore God’s limits via the amazing book of ACTS. Join us! See you Sunday as we explore the SECOND greatest moment in human history. No kidding.
