Western Illinois director of athletics Matt Tanney welcomed head coach Charlie Fisher in an introductory press conference on January 4, 2016. Fisher became the 28th head football coach in WIU history. He spent the last two years at Richmond. “I am honored and humbled to be named the head football coach at Western Illinois University,” said Fisher. “This team has a great foundation and a really good nucleus of talent returning. I’m excited to keep building this program as a contender in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, continue on the great tradition of winning football and being part of a great community.” Western Illinois becomes the second head coaching stop for Fisher. From 1993-97 he was the head coach at West Georgia and posted a 36-17 record with a share of the 1997 Gulf South Conference championship and two postseason appearances. He coached 45 All-Gulf South Conference performers and seven All-Americans. With more than 30 years of college coaching experience, Fisher spent time as an as-sistant coach at: Richmond, Penn State, Miami (Ohio), Vanderbilt, Temple, North Carolina State, West Georgia, Lenoir-Rhyne, Ole Miss and Eastern Kentucky. He was a graduate assistant on the 1982 Eastern Kentucky team that won the FCS national championship. Fisher spent nine years at Vanderbilt in various roles. During the 2005 season he was part of the offensive staff that coached SEC ‘Player of the Year’ Jay Cutler. Fisher also coached wide receiver Earl Bennett, who was a semifinalist for the Fred Biletnikoff Award (nation’s best wide receiver). During his time, he coached two SEC ‘Freshman of the Year’ award winners. In his two years as the wide receivers coach at North Carolina State, Fisher coached the ACC ‘Rookie of the Year’ (and eventual ninth overall pick in the NFL Draft) Koren Robinson, and 1998 consensus First Team All-American and ACC ‘Player of the Year’ Torry Holt. Fisher earned his bachelor’s degree from Springfield College and a master’s degree at Eastern Kentucky. He and his wife Julie have two sons: Brian and Brett.

DID YOU KNOW?Current head coach Charlie Fisher earned his bachelor’s degree from Springfield Col-lege. Another famous alum from Springfield (Mass.) College is WIU former head coach and Athletic Director Ray ‘Rock’ Hanson.

Western’s field is named after Rock Hanson.

Western Illinois Football #4 NORTH DAKOTA STATE

WHAT IS A FIGHTING LEATHERNECK?: Western Illinois holds the distinction of being the only non-military institution to officially have its nickname derived from a branch of the military service. The school began use of the Marine Corps’ official nickname, “The Fighting Leathernecks,” in 1927 when then-athletic director and head baseball, basketball and football coach Ray “Rock” Hanson was granted permission by the U.S. Navy, based on his status as a Marine hero, to use the Marine’s official seal, bulldog mascot and nickname. He still remains third all-time at Western in victories with 56 in 16 years as head coach (56-60-12) from 1926-41. He posted a winning record six years and a .500 mark during another season. The 1939 team went 5-1-1 and won the Little 19 Conference championship.

NFL CONNECTIONS: Western Illinois continues its tradition as one of the top NCAA FCS programs with a pipeline to the NFL... Players and coaches from Leatherneck history have won 17 Super Bowl Championships. • Mike Wagner won four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Steel Curtain era.• Rodney Harrison won a pair of Super Bowls with the New England Patriots in three appear-ances all-time. He now works in-studio at NBC Sports during Sunday Night Football Night. • Don Beebe is just one of three players to have played in SIX Super Bowls in his career. He was part of the four consecutive appearances by Buffalo and went 1-1 with the Green Bay Packers. Beebe has one of the most famous Super Bowl plays when he raced down the field and chased down Dallas Cowboys lineman Leon Lett at the 1-yard line and knocked the ball away to keep Dallas from scoring a touchdown. From 1957-59, former WIU head coach Lou Saban had on his staff Joe Collier and standout WIU player Robert ‘Red’ Miller.• Saban was the inaugural coach for the Boston Patriots, then later the Buf-falo Bills. He was the 1964 AFL ‘Coach of the Year’. Saban spent four years as coach of the Denver Broncos and would later come back and coach the Bills. • Miller, a three-time MVP for the Leathernecks, would later coach the Denver Broncos in the 1977 Super Bowl and three consecutive playoff appearances. • Collier joined Saban in Boston and was promoted to the Buffalo Bills head coach in 1966. He took the Bills to the AFL Championship game that season. He later worked as an assistant with the Denver Broncos, hired first by Saban then later Miller as defensive coordinator. He coached in three Super Bowls with the Broncos. Collier was the mastermind behind the Broncos defense known at the time as the ‘Orange Crush Defense’.• Former All-American John Teerlinck won two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos as an assistant coach and another Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts as an assistant coach.• WIU All-American Bryan Cox enters his 11th year in the NFL as an assistant coach. He enters his second year as the defensive line coach for the Atlanta Falcons.• Mike Scifres spent 13 years with San Diego. He was recently cut in fall camp by the Carolina Panthers. • Offensive Lineman Frank Winters won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers and was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame. In September 2016 he will receive the George Connor Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame.

WESTERN ILLINOIS FOOTBALL8

Western Illinois Football #4 NORTH DAKOTA STATE

FISHER’S START: Over the past 60 years, Charlie Fisher became the eighth head coach in Western history to win his debut. The Leathernecks’ captured a 38-21 season-opening win at in-state rival Eastern Illinois... Fisher joined Don Patterson (1999 at Northern Illinois, 27-21) and Bill Shanahan (1976 at South Dakota State, 28-21) as the only coach to win his debut when playing on the road in that same span... Having started his first year as a Leatherneck 3-0, Fisher joined three others to start their WIU career at least 3-0: Patterson (1999, 3-0, 7-4), Shanahan (1976, 4-0, 7-3) and Wes Stevens (1954, 4-0-2, 6-1-3).

ANOTHER UPPER DIVISION WIN: WIU head coach Charlie Fisher notched his third vic-tory versus an upper-division program following Western’s win at Northern Illinois. While at Division II West Georgia he secured a 15-14 win over then-FCS Georgia Southern in 1994 and Jacksonville State in 1996.

CHALK UP THE FBS VICTORY: Western Illinois ended a 15-game losing streak against FBS programs following its 28-23 victory at Northern Illinois... The Fighting Leathernecks improved to 7-29 overall versus the FBS with all victories against Mid-American Conference programs... Western’s previous FBS win came at Eastern Michigan in September 2003.

UNDEFEATED NON-CONFERENCE SLATE: The Leathernecks accomplished a feat last done in 2002 (4-0), going undefeated against non-conference teams during the regular sea-son... Western during that 2002 stretch also defeated Northern Illinois... Two of Western’s wins this year came on the road (Eastern Illinois, Northern Illinois).

WHAT ANOTHER ROAD WIN MEANS: Currently at 3-1 on the road, Western Illinois matched the highest road victory total since the 2003 season (5).

GOING FOR THE COMPASS SWEEP: Western Illinois started off the 2016 season with victories over Eastern Illinois in week one and Northern Illinois in week three... The final point to the Compass Sweep will be the regular season finale at Southern Illinois... If Western is able to accomplish that feat, it would be the first time since 1996 - a year in which WIU also swept the Compass on the road.

WELCOME BACK TO THE ‘TOP 10’: Following the victory at Northern Illinois, the Leath-ernecks jumped up to seventh in the HERO Sports poll and eighth in the STATS FCS and Coaches ‘Top 25’ poll... The last time Western earned a ranking among the ‘Top 10’ was during the 2003 season, spending 12 of the 15 weeks in the ‘Top 10’ going as high as #2 and ending with a #5 ranking.

BIGGEST POLL JUMP IN 14 YEARS: Western opened the year ranked 20th in the pre-season poll, and the #7 ranking last week saw WIU jump 13 spots so far this year. That’s the biggest in-season jump by the Leathernecks since the 2002 campaign when they were ranked 19th on September 16 and rose as high as #2 in the final regular season poll (17 spots).

LOOKING FOR BACK-TO-BACK: One of the Leathernecks’ goals during the off-season is to accomplish something only done two other times in program history... Coming off a 2015 FCS Playoff appearance, if Western returns to the postseason, this year’s team will match the consecutive years streak from 1996-98 and again from 2002-03.

PRESEASON TOP 25: Western Illinois received two more preseason ‘Top 25’ rankings when the STATS FCS and Coaches ‘Top 25’ poll each was released… The Leathernecks were ranked 20th in the STATS poll and 24th in the Coaches… Western was ranked 22nd in both poll at the conclusion of the 2015 season… The No. 16 preseason ranking by the Sporting News poll remained the highest ranking for Western... It marks the first preseason ‘Top 25’ ranking for Western since the 2008 season, and highest since starting 12th in the 2004 season.

PRESEASON ALL-MVFC POLL: In the preseason MVFC poll, Western (with 17 return-ing starters) was picked to finish sixth among the 10 teams in a vote by the league’s head coaches, select media members and sports information directors... After finishing in a tie for third last year, Western received 176 points to finish sixth in the preseason poll. North Dakota State received 37 of the 39 first-place votes for 388 points. Northern Iowa received the other two votes for first place, tallying 343 points. South Dakota State (284), Illinois State (274) and Youngstown State (254) rounded out the top five... South Dakota (146), Southern Illinois (124), Indiana State (115) and Missouri State (41) rounded out the poll.

CAREER STARTS TEAM CAPTAINS: Western Illinois announced the team captains for the 2016 season... During the spring game, head coach Charlie Fisher announced sophomore quarterback Sean McGuire and junior linebacker Brett Taylor received the honor. In fall camp, sophomore linebacker Riggs Baxter was named captain for special teams. The trio will be joined by a fourth Leatherneck every week.

THREE NAMED PRESEASON ALL-MVFC: Western Illinois landed three players on the Preseason All-Missouri Valley Football Confer-ence team, as announced by the conference office... Junior line-backer Brett Taylor (Macomb/Macomb), senior wide receiver Lance Lenoir, Jr. (Crete/Crete Monee) and junior offensive lineman Jacob Judd (Clinton, IA/Clinton) were chosen to the preseason team.

CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES: The Leathernecks have six members of the program who already received their bachelor’s de-gree. Trenton Norvell (QB - Marketing), Jacob Judd (Jr/OL - Law Enforcement Justice Administration), and Matt Zobrist (OL - Ac-countancy) graduated last May. They were joined by Jean-Marc Charles (Exercise Science), who ended his career this summer but will remain with the program as a student equipment manager... Steve Mercado (Lafayette) and Jamie Gilmore (Temple) both joined the team as graduate transfers. Mercado received his degree in Anthropology & Sociology while Gilmore earned his degree in Business Administration.

NO EASY TASK: The 2015 season saw Western finish with the na-tion’s toughest schedule. At 6-5 in the regular season, but 5-3 and 3rd place in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, Western earned an at-large bid to the postseason and advanced to the second round... This year’s schedule has currently three ranked opponents, a win over FBS Northern Illinois, and five against teams receiving votes (UNI, Illinois State, Missouri State, Indiana State, South Dakota).

SEASON-OPENING SUCCESS AGAINST FCS: The Leather-necks have had great success in season-opening games against Football Championship Subdivision opponents... Western’s 38-21 road win at Eastern Illinois marked the 12th win in the last 13 op-portunities (only loss 20-6 at Sam Houston State in 2011).2016: 38-21 at Eastern Illinois2015: 33-5 vs. #25 Eastern Illinois2014: 45-6 vs. Valparaiso2013: 42-9 vs. Hampton 2012: 23-15 vs. Butler2010: 45-0 vs. Valparaiso2009: 35-28 at Sam Houston State2007: 29-26 (4OT) win vs. #20 South Dakota State2006: 31-6 vs. Morehead State2002: 64-7 vs. Drake2001: 17-13 vs. #3 Western Kentucky1997: 41-0 vs. #6 Eastern Illinois.Since 2000 the Leathernecks have defeated Division II Wayne State (35-3 in 2003) and lost to FBS teams Missouri (50-20 in 2000), Nebraska (56-17 in 2004), Toledo (62-14 in 2005) and Ar-kansas (28-24 in 2008).

ALL-TIME AT HANSON FIELD: On September 23, 1950, Hanson Field was dedicated and became the home of Leatherneck Foot-ball... In the last 66 years, Western has compiled a 235-117-7 re-cord at home. ACTIVE CAREER STATISTICAL LEADERS

HANSON FIELD TOUGH ON NON-CONFERENCE TEAMS: Playing at Hanson Field has been a tough task for non-conference teams in recent years... The Leathernecks are 33-4 against non-MVFC teams since 1999, including a current 11-game win streak following a 1-0 record during the 2015 season and so far in 2016.

SEVEN STRAIGHT HOME OPENERS: Tied in with the current win streak versus non-MVFC teams at home, Western Illinois won its seventh-straight home opening game... The Fighting Leathernecks extended the streak following the 34-20 win over Northern Arizona... The last time Western lost its home opener was 2009 versus Stephen F. Austin.

NATIONAL STATISTICAL RANKINGS: Western ranks among the ‘Top 15’ in the latest NCAA FCS rankings:Time of Possession (4th/34:36)4th Down Conversion Defense (5th/.200)Fumbles Lost (10th/2)Redzone Defense (13th/.688)Winning Percentage (6th/.833)Western also stands among the ‘Top 25’ in five other categories: 21st in total offense (436.8), 23rd in Turnovers Lost (3), 24th in sacks allowed (1.17), 24th in net punting (38.2), 24th in passing offense (267.5). • Brett Taylor is fifth in solo tackles (MVFC-leading 6.5 p/g) and 18th nationally in total tackles (10.2 p/g).• Lance Lenoir, Jr. enters this week third nationally in receiving yards per game (MVFC-leading 126.5) and sixth in receptions per game (MVFC-leading 7.5). His 143.3 all-purpose yards per game leads the MVFC and stands 20th in the country.• Steve McShane stands 11th in rushing yards per game (MVFC-leading 108.3), 17th in rushing TDs (7) and 25th in all-purpose yards (131.3).• Sean McGuire is 33rd in passing TDs (10) and moved up to 17th in passing yards per game (259.8). TWO MAJOR TURNAROUND STATISTICS FROM 2015: Western ended last year minus four minutes in the time of possession battle, losing the head-to-head statistic nine of the 13 games... This year the Leathernecks rank fourth nationally and second in the Missouri Valley Football Conference averaging 34:36 minutes per game. In all six games, Western has won the TOP competition, including three games holding the ball for at least 10 min-utes longer... Last year, Western averaged 30.6 yards of net punting. So far in 2016, the Leathernecks have allowed 5.1 yards on punt returns to score 38.2 yards of net punting, good for 24th in the country.

LEATHERNECK NOTES:• Steve McShane’s 70-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter at Eastern Illinois was the longest by a Leatherneck dating back to 2000. In that game, Frisman Jackson set a WIU quarterback record for longest rush with his 77-yard run at Southern Illinois... Three games later Stacey Smith broke off a 71-yard run to set the current season-high.

• Steve McShane’s second half against Eastern Illinois put him in the record book. His 168 rushing yards in a half was the fourth-most in program history while his 110 yards in a quarter (fourth) ranked him sixth.

• Currently the MVFC rushing leader and 11th nationally, Steve McShane is trying to be-come the first Leatherneck to lead the Missouri Valley Football Conference in rushing since Herb Donaldson in 2008.

• Brett Taylor currently ranks third in the MVFC in tackles per game at 10.2 (18th nation-ally). The last Leatherneck to lead the conference was All-American Kyle Glazier in 2010 (12.85), who finished second in the Buck Buchanan Award voting that year.

• Two of Brett Taylor’s three career interceptions have come against Eastern Illinois. He owns 54 interception return yards versus the Panthers, including a touchdown.

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Sophomore Steve McShane rushed for a career-high 207 yards and 20th-ranked Western Illinois pulled away late in the game to secure a season-opening 38-21 win at Eastern Illinois. It marked the first WIU victory for head coach Charlie Fisher. McShane, who saw limited practice time during Fisher’s initial spring drills due to baseball, earned his first collegiate start and nearly ran for as many yards as he did during his true-freshman campaign. His 168 yards in the second half finished as the fourth-highest rushing total in a half in program history, and his 110 yards in the fourth quarter was the sixth-most in a quarter in program history. It was the first 200-yard effort by a Leatherneck since Herb Donald-son ran for 273 yards at Missouri State in 2008, and the Leathernecks last won a season-opener on the road in 2009 (at Sam Houston State). In the fourth quarter, McShane broke down the sidelines and scored from 70 yards out to put the game away. It was the longest run by a Leatherneck in 16 years. Brett Taylor led the defensive attack making 14 tackles with a sack, interception and forced fumble. Xavier Rowe recorded a career-high 11 tackles.

DeKALB, Ill. – Trying to stop Northern Illinois’ late rally, the West-ern Illinois defense held on 4th-and-3 at its own nine yard line in the final minute for a 28-23 victory. The Fighting Leathernecks improved to 3-0 overall, and picked up their first FBS victory since 2003. Western’s last FBS win came at Eastern Michigan (34-12) on September 4, 2003 and it snapped a 15-game losing streak to FBS programs. Northern cut into Western’s 21-point fourth quarter lead and forced a Leatherneck punt in the final minutes. On its final drive, NIU used big plays to get inside the redzone. Setting up 1st-and-10 at the 16, NIU (0-4) rushed twice for a 3rd-and-3 situation. A pass went incomplete from Anthony Maddie. On fourth down, a pass attempt across the middle was deflected and Western took over on downs. The offense went on the field for the victory formation, took a knee, and sealed the program’s seventh FBS win all-time. Sean McGuire finished 21-of-37 passing for 315 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 11 yards and a score. Joey Borsellino got his fifth career 100-yard receiving game, making nine catches for a game-high 148 yards. He went past 2,000 receiving yards all-time, and overtook second place all-time in recep-tions with (158).
