Truly you are the Son of God. Matt. 14:33

    Dear Children of God,

This morning as I prepared to write this article I was re-

viewing the schedule for confirmation classes. Yes, its hard to

believe but it is THAT TIME again! I was reminded of two re-

    peating phrases in the catechism, namely;

What Does This Mean? and This is Most CertainlyTrue.

Most of us learned to give a definition of the Christian Faith in

response to that first question. For example, in the second article

of the Apostles Creed we confess, I believe that Jesus Christ,

true God, begotten of the Father from eternity and also true man,

born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord. This confession is based

on Scriptures like Matt. 14:33 quoted above, which clearly con-

vey the eternal truth that Jesus is both God and man. We then

conclude by unequivocally confessing this truth in the statement

This Is Most Certainly True. But that which holds such greatmeaning and assures us of truth is of little or no importance to

    many people today.

Im referring not simply to those who werent raised Lu-

theran, or who didnt study the catechism. Rather, Im talking

about Christian, non-Christian and even those raised Lutheran.

It seems as if many have bought into the post-modern view of life,

where truth is irrelevant and ever changing and meaning is de-

termined solely by what one desires. Many people dont believe

in truth, or see any significance in it. What matters to many is

what people think, or feel or believe to be truewhether it really

is or not. For example, if a person believes in Jesus, thats fine. But if someone else believes that Buddha is just as legitimate as

    3

    Continued on page 4

  • 8/14/2019 Broadcast - August

    4/23

    Continued from page 3

a means of making it through life, thats OK too. While beingkind, considerate, and compassionate of others, as Christians

we should never compromise on the truth. This is not our

opinion, it is the word of God. Jesus plainly said, I am the

way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except

through me. And Scripture reveals Jesus not to be a good

man, or a holy guy who can help us along lifes path, but

    rather THE SON OF GOD.

Similar to this is the idea that something has meaning only

if it has meaning TO ME. In todays world the catechism

question What does this mean? has been amended to read

What does this mean TO ME? Again, this is not only unbe-lievers, but believers alike who fall into this way of thinking.

Christians demand churches and pastors that are relevant and

meaningful, regardless of whether the message coming from

them is true and in accord with Gods Word. Using the exam-

ple of the miracle of Jesus Stilling the Storm from which this

articles theme verse is taken, we are quick to make applica-

tion to the storms of life that have tossed us about, but perhaps

much slower to see that the purpose of this miracle was not

merely to comfort us in our daily afflictions and lifes many

difficulties, but to convey the clear message that JESUS IS

THE SON OF GOD, and as such He has authority over na-ture itself.

No matter what we, or anyone else thinks, this is the truth.

And it has value and meaning, both temporally and eternally.

We come to a knowledge of this truth not on our own, or by

means of lifes experiences, but through Gods Word and His

means of Grace, which are the sacraments. May the Holy

Spirit lead us into the truth of Jesus Christ, and by knowing

the truth may we be set free.

    Peace,

    Pastor

    Catechism Connection

Who is Jesus Christ? He is true God and True Man.

How do you know that Jesus is true God?

He has divine names. John 20:28

    He possesses divine attributes. John 1:1-2; Heb. 13:8;

    John 21:17; Matt. 28:20.

He does divine works. Matt. 9:6; John 5:27.

He receives divine honor and glory. Heb. 1:6

How do you know that Jesus is true Man?

The Scriptures call him man. 1 Tim. 2:5

He has a human body and soul. Luke 24:39

He performs human functions and has human emo-

    tions. Matt. 4:2; John 11:35

Why was it necessary for the savior to be both God and man? To

fulfill the law on behalf of man and take mans place in suffering

Gods wrath for sin, while at the same time being able to fully atone

for that sin. Romans 5:19; Col. 1:22.

Every year, many people choose to provide a life insur-ance beneficiary gift to their church or to a qualified chari-table organization. In this gift, donors simply name the or-ganization as the beneficiary of their life insurance contact. The gift is simple to understand and implement. Contractowners maintain control of the contracts until their deaths,

so they can choose to change beneficiaries if they want.Insurance proceeds are estate tax deductible. For thosewho want to leave a gift at death and for those who desireto create a larger gift through smaller annual premiums, the gift of life insurance is ideal.

    VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

A big THANK YOU to everyone

who helped make this years Vaca-

tion Bible School a huge success.

We had a week full of learning

about Jesus love, singing fun new

    songs, eating delicious snacks, play-

ing games, and making new friends. With the help of 51

total workers we reached out to an average of 50 chil-

dren per day. The week ended with a presentation by

Harry Krueckeberg on the LCMS Mission: Southern

Africa and a fun picnic. The children ended the week

knowing that Jesus loves them, cares for them and will

    always be with them.

There were 54 children in attendance during the

week - we had 54 people helping with decorating,

registration, teaching, crafts, snacks, games, music,

missions, paperwork, grilling, cleaning and tear

down. Everyone was awesome! Thank you all. $600.00 was collected for the Mission: Southern

Africa. Thanks to Harry Krueckeberg for his pres-

    entations.

VBS Follow-up: We will have a meeting Tuesday, Au-

gust 12th at 7:00pm to discuss this years VBS and hear

suggestions for next year. Staff members watch for an

evaluation in your boxes. Bring those to the meeting or

Todays Uncertain Economy and the Role of Stewardship

Commentary by Allen HelmsReporter- Newspaper of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod

I just filled my cars gas tank at the price of $3.82 per gallon.By the time you read this, that price may seem like one from thegood old days for where you may be.

Who knows how much higher the price of gas per gallon orbarrel might go? What about the high number of home mortgagedefaults and related foreclosure proceedings? And now we hearthat food prices are likely to increase because of flood-ruinedcrops.

Where will it end? When will we get back to normal? Andwhats normal for a dynamic economy anyway?

Higher prices will more than likely have an impact on whatchurchgoers place in offering plates.

So what should we be doing and saying to assist others withfinancial stewardship during these uncertain times?

Difficulties often present prime opportunities for teaching lifelessons. It is no different with todays economy and stewardship.

Yes, stewardship still matters in todays uncertain economy. This is an opportune time to search the Scriptures with your

members, and to discuss, teach, and preach about what it means

to be a steward while living with the resources we have beengiven.

Rev. Wayne Knolhoff, director of stewardship with LCMSDistrict and Congregational Services - Stewardship Ministry, saysrepeatedly that any teaching on the subject of stewardship muststart with the steward and the fact that we are justified by God onaccount of Christs work, by grace, through faith.

As family and church budgets take up more of our discussionsin the months ahead, I encourage you to begin those times ofwrestling by reminding yourself that you are Gods steward byHis grace.

Everything belongs to God and we are to responsibly managethose blessings of His that He has entrusted to us.

    RMD Faithful: Social or Divine?

    Why Not Just Join?

If we like the menu and food at a restaurant, we eat there. If we likethe prices and selection at particular grocery store, we buy our foodthere. If we find a favorite mall, we do much of our shopping there. We are used to choosing where we spend our money and time. Whynot do the same with churches?

It is not uncommon to find some people who flitter about from onechurch to another in their lifetimes. For a while they may prefer thepastor at one congregation, but then they get tired of him and go

someplace else. Likewise, they might like the activities and the peo-ple at a church, but then a disagreement of falling out occurs, andthey leave that church for someplace else. Church membership isonly as consistent as a persons feelings and relationships at the mo-ment.

    A Different Kind of Membership

There is, however, another way of looking at church membership, away which has staying power. It is not ultimately concerned whetherthe pastor is friendly or inspirational, but whether he is telling the

truth about God. It is not concerned whether the members are outgo-ing or whether the church has enough social activities, but whetherthe church stands fast upon the Word of God.

If you select a church based on human qualities of the pastor or peo-ple you are making a selection which is bound to change as easily asthe pastor or people themselves change - like shifting sands in theprevailing winds. That is why we want to direct your attention to theWord of God as it is preached and taught and not on personalities andcreature comforts. As 1Peter1l:24-25 states: For all men are likegrass and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass with-

ers and the flowers fall, but the Word of the Lord stands forever. Andthis is the Word that was preached to you.

In John 8:31-32, we read that Jesus said to those who believed

Him, If you abide in My Word, you are My disciples indeed. Andyou shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. We areconcerned about abiding in Christs Word of truth as His disciples. There is nothing wishy-washy or willy-nilly about abiding asChrists disciple. Becoming a member of this congregation issomething more than joining and quitting in a easy-come-easy-goway.

Many churches today want to emphasize that they are friendly. Many want to emphasize how many programs for fun, fellowship, and convenience they may offer. But how many claim to have the

truth? Friendliness, convenience, and social interaction are all nicethings, but they are not what will help you stand before the Al-mighty Lord God.

Our concern is not in arguing over that claim, but in proclaimingLaw and Gospel faithfully, The Law exposes our need for the Gos-pel of Jesus Christ. It shows that we need forgiveness. The Gospelis not for people who think that they are basically good The Gos-pel is for the broken-hearted sinners who need life which Jesusgives through His gifts.

Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up?

Some years age, there was a t.v. program where a group of threechallengers tried to fool a panel of four jurors. Each of the contest-ants to decide who was really who he said he was. At the end of thesession the moderator would say, Will the real Aletheia Jeffersonplease stand up?

Today, all Chrisitan churches teach people to believe in Jesus. But not all preach the same Jesus. Some preach a Jesus who saysthat the Lords Supper is just a symbolic ritual for remembering

Him, while other churches proclaim a Jesus who says that theLords Supper is His true body and blood given for the remission

of sins. Some preach a Jesus who says that babies should be baptized

while others teach that babies should not be baptized because theycant believe. Some preach a Jesus who says its o.k. for women tobe pastors while others preach a Jesus who says that the Bible isagainst the ordination of women. With the real Jesus please standup? There are many churches preaching many different Jesuses. But what is the truth? Matthew 28 records Jesus as saying, Teachthem to observe all things that I have commanded you. Likewise, theBible warns against those who preach false Christs and those whoproclaim a different Gospel.

Would you vote for a politician who supports ecological concerns to

one group but then turns around and is sympathetic to heavy indus-trialization of forest lands? Would you trust an elected official whosays to wealthy businessmen that he favors tax loopholes for thembut to the poor he says we need to tax the rich people more heavily? We dont appreciate two-faced politicians. But then why do we tol-erate it with regard to spiritual matters? Many churches and campusministries give the appearance of being loving and open to every-thing and everybody. But when churches try to stand for everything, they end up standing for nothing at all.

There is no such thing as generic Christianity. If you are going to

believe in Jesus, you must believe in Him as He proclaims Himself. In other words, you must understand and take a stand on the specif-ics of Holy Baptism, The Lords Supper, and the Word of God in theway He gives it. To do anything less is a foolhardy denial of theGospel. Join a congregation which is gathered around the true Gos-pel of Jesus Christ and all that He has taught, a congregation whichyou will not just flitter away from if the pastor is boring or the peo-ple are cold. When you find such a church centered on forgivenessrather than commandments, even wild horses wont be able to keepyou away from the joy and peace which are proclaimed in Christ!

    Which Church is Right?

People will argue fiercely about which is the best car, beer, or politicalparty. But when it comes to churches, one is supposed to be as good (orbad!) as another. It may be that cars, beers, and political parties reallydo matter more than churches - or else they have done a better job ofconvincing their listeners. But lets face a few simple facts aboutchurches and their differences.

    1. Differences among the churches are real and important. They con-sist of something more than the trifles about what the pastor wears, customs, or whether the Lords Prayer is said this way or that. They

deal with the actual basics of the Bible.2. The main differences are not too complicated for the average per-

son to understand. True, there are sections of Scripture that are dif-ficult to understand (see John 6:60-69 & 2 Peter 3:15-18). But thebasic teachings abut life in Christ are clearly laid out in Scripture.

    3. Christ wants us to recognize the differences in doctrine and to re-main faithful to the truth. The following Bible passages illustratethis: (Romans 16:17-18) I urge you, brothers, to watch out forthose who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that arenot serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talkand flattery they deceive the minds of nave people. (1 Timothy

6:3) If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to thesound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, heis conceited and understands nothing. (also see 2 John 1:9)

To become a member at this congregation mean to agree that these be-liefs and practices are faithful to Gods Word - a person must receivewhat is being preached and taught before believing and agreeingwholeheartedly. If youd like to learn about these things before makinga commitment, then by all means, wed love to have you!
