Introduction…..Broadband wireless communication: high speed internet access.Originally broadband - technical term but
became a marketing term . Increase in demand for BWC .Led to development with high growth rate. Bottleneck for telecom.- “last mile
connectivity to end users”.Gave birth to- “BPL”.
BPL
Broadband Power line Communication or broadband over power line.
High speed digital transmission over public electric power distribution wiring.
High frequencies used, wider frequency range.2- 34 MHz . High rate communication over long distances.Prone to interference as frequencies – a part of
radio spectrum allocated to over air communication services.
More about BPL Uses OFDM. Also uses adaptive modulation . Duplexing schemes used: FDD( Frequency division Duplexing). TDD(Time division duplexing). BPL stds. IEEE 1901 std: usable by all classes of BPL devices G.hn: defines networking over power lines, phone lines,
coaxial cables for home networking applications. BPL - type of PLC. PLC –carry data on conductor -simultaneously used for
AC electric power transmission/distribution to consumers.
Working of BPLMain components: “ Head End”, “ Repeaters”,
CPE’s”.Head end: injects BW from telecom provider’s
pt of presence to utility lines as RF data.Repeater: placed at intermediate points for
amplification of RF signals as it dies down.CPE’s: placed at user location for converting
RF data to BW for ultimate connection to user PC.
For connection of Head End and Repeaters to power lines suitable external couplers required (capacitive or inductive).
Continued…….
For CPE’s couplers are internal to the equipment .
CPE’s: “Customer Premises Equipment”A portable device – plugged into any of the
AC electrical outlets. Thus provides- “Plug and Play” broadband
at home.
Why BPLBPL - carries data on the existing power lines -
providers of electricity to households . Providing data access to remote regions .Remote areas not suitable for fiber optic networks.BPL offers- a) benefit over regular cable modem or
DSL.b) Hardly any investment on infrastructure and
equipment .c ) uses carrier frequencies in parallel – to spread data
over wide range of frequencies.d) communication less vulnerable to nulls or
interference from noise or any other devices.
Applications• In house applications: occur within a single
building - both ends of communication link within the building. Building – can be a house / apartment block /office building.
• Path over which transfer of data occurs- is less than 100 m between devices.
• Last –mile applications :connection to home or office of internet via broadband service suppliers.
• In addition to broadband internet connections -also provide voice-IP telephony, video-VHS video quality, surveillance systems, entertainment- gaming , electric metering.
Software usedThe software used to compare the
various network parameters of the different sites using BPL system is wire shark.
Wire shark – a GUI network packet analyzer.
Displays the packet and its details .
Wireshark• Wire shark -------- network packet analyzer.• A network packet analyzer will capture network
packets and display that packet data as detailed as possible.
• You could think of a network packet analyzer as a measuring device used to examine what's going on inside a network cable, just like a voltmeter is used by an electrician to examine what's going on inside an electric cable (but at a higher level, of course).
• Wire shark is perhaps one of the best open source packet analyzers available today.
Use of Wire shark• Network administrators use it to troubleshoot
network problems .• Network security engineers use it to examine
security problems .• Developers use it to debug protocol
implementations .• People use it to learn network protocol
internals.
Features • Available for UNIX and Windows.• Capture live packet data from a network interface. • Open files containing packet data captured with tcp dump /Win
Dump, Wire shark, and a number of other packet capture programs. • Import packets from text files containing hex dumps of packet data. • Display packets with very detailed protocol information. • Save packet data captured. • Export some or all packets in a number of capture file formats. • Filter packets on many criteria.• Search for packets on many criteria.• Colorize packet display based on filters.• Create various statistics.• ... and a lot more
Limitation of the network/software• Although using Wireshark helps in managing
the network parameters but it can’t prevent the damages caused by the equipments used in networks . It can only monitor the losses in packets and enlist the movement of protocol specific data .
Drawbacks Power lines- inherently posses noisy environment. Switching power supplies- noisy harmonics in power line. Power system design philosophy – plays major role in
deployment of BPL. e.g. -USA and Europe. Power distribution – step down transformers- reduce voltage
– for used by customers. BPL signals can’t readily pass thru transformers – as high inductance makes them behave – low pass filters Blocking high frequency signals- so Repeaters to be attached
to transformers. No of repeaters to be deployed may vary – based on design
philosophy. Electro magnetic compatibility – a major issue.
Conclusion….• Possible way to provide- last mile
broadband connectivity – to internet users – requiring high BW.
• Prospects of satisfactory deployment- semi urban and rural sectors.
• BPL tech. – to progress – can assist utility org.- with intelligent capabilities in electric network.
• Resulting – improved efficiency in – energy management.
