The general feeling is that Soho rents are out of control and the old shops, pubs and clubs are being forced out in a process of gentrification. What will be left is just shops from the big chains and extremely expensive housing. So off we went on a whistle-stop tour of Soho Cellar Clubs and I was in heaven. Most of the places we visited are meant to be Member’s Clubs, but they don’t seem too fussy, especially early in the evening or if the correct amount of wonga gets waved about. Some were quite smart, some were very seedy, some were big and some were small, but they all seemed to be full of people having a really good time. We started off at Arts Theatre Club in Frith Street. Lots of Hooray Henrys and cocktails served in flowery tea pots and tea sets and ended up in the Phoenix Artists’ Club in Phoenix Street with a wrap party for a Hammer style horror movie they had just finished shooting in Somerset complete with a pointy-toothed 12 year old vampire. I don’t really remember where we went along the way, but I do know we had a brilliant meal and drank some extremely nice wine in a cellar restaurant called ‘The Cork & Bottle’, just on the corner of Leicester Square, hiding out among the gift shops and pizza joints. (Highly recommended *****) Meanwhile, back in sleepy little Presteigne, Dyfed Powys police had decided

in their infinite wisdom that they needed to come to town specially to quiz Winnies the Newsagents on who had been buying copies of Charlie Hebdo. Whether this was an attempt to find some terrorists or protect us from terrorists, I have no idea, but it did cause much hilarity and was then quickly followed by some wag constructing a Charlie Hebdo amnesty box and hanging it on the lampost outside The Assembly Rooms. The town paparazzi took a picture of it and tweeted it and the next thing you know UKIP had picked up on it - taken it seriously and were re-tweeting it like mad. Meanwhile, a little bird tells me that a good many of the copies Winnies had originally sold were not to very politicised readers - no, they were destined for Ebay and a healthy profit!

AST month I was talking about my abiding love for venues in cellars. In the article I forgot to mention that whenever

I go to Central London or the South Bank I always try and fit in a quick glass of wine at Gordon’s Wine Bar at the bottom of Villiers Street, by the Embankment Station. This is a delightfully seedy wine bar in a cellar that is so convincing, I’m sure they bring in highly skilled theatre designers every fortnight to make sure it continues to look like something out of a Dickens’ novel. I mention it because last weekend I went up to London for a very brief visit and charged my friends to take us country bumpkins out on the town for the night. They had no knowledge of last month’s editorial but decided with admirable synchronicity to take us on a tour of the cellar clubs at Soho. At the moment there is a high profile Save Soho campaign going on since the closure of Madame Jo Jos’, the all purpose burlesque, music, strip, comedy club in Brewers Street.

NCE again Broad Sheep’s postbag has been bulging with mail, mainly from my obesssive correspondent, Ms. Blodwyn Boggins of Borth. This time she has

included a photograph, which goes some way to explain why she is known by her friends, rather unkindly, as ‘The Great Bog of Borth’. She is apparently looking for a new career, something completely different from her previous job as a welder and before that a professional wrestler. She is keen to become a philosopher and moreover a teacher of philosophy. She seeks my advice. Dear Ms. Boggins,1. Never, but never, admit to being a philosopher. If someone asks what you do and you foolishly tell them you’re a philosopher they will either think you’re unnaturally brainy - which you are probably not - or that there’s something seriously wrong with you and that you should be placed in secure accommodation. Instead, be inventive: be a plumber, or a deep-sea diver, or a ballet dancer. But never a philosopher. 2. Cultivate the use of long words. Two maxims should guide you: never use a short word when a long word is available and second, never use an English word when a foreign version is just around the corner. So ‘different’ is out and ‘contradistinctive’ is in. Don’t talk about a ‘view of the world’, refer to someone’s ‘Weltanschauung’.This will impress no end and will help conceal the truth that you’re using weird vocabulary to hide the fact you are clueless about the topic in hand.3. With practice you’ll soon be able to string foreign words together into complete, though totally unintelligible, sentences. In the supermarket, for instance, observing the rising cost of basic foodstuffs, you might remark to the check-out girl, ‘Tempora mutantur nos et in illis mutamur, don’t you think, Tracy?‘ Or frustrated by the demonic complications of the new-fangled pin machine in the bank, why not make your opinion crystal clear with ‘Entia non sunt multiplicanda praetor necessitatem’ before storming out in a huff?4. By your tone of voice it’s essential to give the impression, although probably false, that you know what you’re talking about. So speak really slowly, emphasizing important words, and words that are not important at all - long foreign words especially. 5. At all cost avoid making statements, instead ask lots of questions. Why? Because awkward students - and philosophy, of course, attracts them by the lorry-load - can always challenge a statement, whereas a question is fireproof. So for instance instead of baldly stating that ‘Descartes’s cogito [note the foreign word] is seriously flawed’ it’s much safer to ask ‘Don’t you find that Descartes’s cogito is open to criticism?’ The experienced philosophy teacher can more or less dispense with making statements altogether. The rule is simple: since you probably have nothing useful to say, say nothing.6. Never make something simple if you can make it complicated. Therefore if you are asked a question to which you have no idea how to reply, use the technique of making the question seem far too simple. ‘Don’t you feel that your question is really three questions rolled into one?’

Bog-Standard Adviceusually does the trick. With any luck this will sufficiently deflate the student, enough to prevent further annoyance.7. If you are serious about becoming a philosophy teacher you must acquire a pipe. It’s an essential piece of equipment. Here’s how it works: someone asks you a question, you don’t understand the answer, or for that matter the question, so get out your pipe and begin the long and complex process of preparing it for ignition, during which avoid all eye-contact with the questioner. Be aware that there are eighteen discrete procedures you can carry out with the pipe, such as: searching for it, looking at it, emptying it, taking it apart, cleaning the bowl, blowing through it, filling it, emptying it again, refilling, tamping down, lighting, and so on. The seasoned philosophy teacher can easily make these operations last a good fifteen to twenty minutes, by which time the student will have lost interest and possibly the will to live. But the joy of the pipe does not end there. Far from it. Exceptionally experienced philosophers finding themselves in a tight corner have been known to create a smoke-screen dense enough to enable them to leave the room unobserved. [It’s not widely recognized that one of the most serious threats to philosophy are the anti-smoking laws.] So you see, Ms. Boggins, if you intend to join the élite company of philosophy teachers you have much to do and many decisions to make, none more important than deciding for yourself whether philosophy is merely an enjoyable but ultimately futile pursuit - like golf - or something that truly illuminates the human condition.

WHIPLASH (15)Based on his own 2013 s h o r t , w r i t e r / d i r e c t o r Damien Chazelle’s second theatrical feature centres on the relat ionship be-tween Andrew (Miles Teller, DIVERGENT), an aspiring jazz drummer and Fletcher, his ultra-demanding teacher played by seasoned t.v. char-acter actor, J.K. Simmons. Driven to nervous and bloody physical breakdown by Fletcher’s bullying, Andrew sacrifices everything, including his budding relationship with fellow student Nicole (Melissa Benoist), for his chance of greatness, the climatic sequence pushing every emotional button. Teller, who actually did his own drumming and Simmons at last relishing a lead role, are both magnificent, Chazelle’s noirish edge and assured directorial hand belies his inexperience and amply justifying its BAFTA and Golden Globe awards for its exhilarating musical sequences, WHIPLASH is an affecting, highly individual drama. TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT (Cert TBA)Understated social drama as expertly parlayed in films like KID WITH A BIKE again infuses the Belgian Dardenne brothers’ story of Sandra (Marion Cotillard, RUST AND BONE), returning to work after a bout of depression to find that her co-workers have voted out of her job in favour of a €1000 bonus. She’s given a weekend to convince those same colleagues to change their minds, prompting a series of confrontations and a gamut of emotions – and excuses – which test both Sandra’s ingenuity and their scruples. In this she’s aided by Dardenne regular Fabrizio Rongione as her supportive husband, and BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR’s Catherine Salée as her confidante. But ultimately it’s Cotillard who tugs hardest at our consciences in this affecting parable for harsh economic times.

The Kilpeck InnTHE Children’s Menu Consultant had just delivered a

fine recitation of Albert and the Lion at his school’s Declamation Day. His performance raised several

laughs and contained only one footling lapse of memory. As a reward, Mr P offered to take him and his mother, Mr P’s Lovely Companion, on an outing to the distinctive South Herefordshire village of Kilpeck. Mr P can sense, even at this distance, sharp in-takes of breath as the readers of the Woolly Organ express their outrage and disbelief that their most trusted reviewer should be prepared to expose his young colleague to the ugly realities of life as expressed by the vividly carved me-dieval stone corbels at the tops of the walls of Kilpeck’s famous church. But be assured, Mr P is no Socrates and had no intention of showing the CMC, a youth of a less than a dozen years, the unsubtle depiction of the famous Sheela na Gig – a kind of medieval, mythical Katie Price – grinning down seductively from beneath the eaves of the church. His plan was to give the lad a free run of the menu at the nearby Kilpeck Inn. This establishment, far too spick’n’span to be called a pub, reopened in its present form about five years ago, having formerly been a simple boozer called the Red Lion. This had a narrow escape from death after it had been bought by unscrupulous individuals wanting to obtain a cheap dwelling by getting an official change of use for the building, much as the last owners of the Ancient Camp Inn at Ruckhall had just done, achieving a massive profit as a result. However, the Red Lion was defended by vil-lagers and those who understood the immense value of the rural British pub and, like the Tally Ho at Bouldon in Corvedale, it was mercifully saved for its important traditional use. It is a shame, though, that it has been refurbished with such relentless vigour. If the place had eyeballs, you could say it had been done up to them, and thus deprived of authenticity and personality. It has been turned, like the Lion at Leintwardine into a faithful imita-tion of a Surrey gastro-Pub which wants to see Jaguars and Porsches in its car park - not tractors and crinkle-cut Daihatsus. The only authentic old fitting Mr P spotted in the squeaky clean bar was a lost-looking octogenarian villager nursing a pint – good pint, it should be noted, of fine Butty Bach. Mr P, the celebrating CMC and the LC were shown into a dining-room that looked like a showroom full of that clean cut, faux-rustic oak furniture that comes from the Shandong Province of the People’s Republic.

The walls were of a neutral hue that might have been designed by psychologists to put nervous punters at their ease. Here was a case where well-chosen music might have done much to give a little mood to the place. The menu showed signs of crafty design, too. There is a sec-tion called ‘Bistro Mains’ which appears to offer some in-expensive options, from which Mr P and his party, always anxious to judge value, chose their main courses. Dishes on the ‘Signature Mains’ were around £4 - £6 more. First, though, they chose from a list of ‘Signature Starters’. Mr P’s Pigeon Breasts (£7) were curate’s-egg-ish – some soft, rosy and succulent, others a little dry and overcooked, though the mustard cream sauce added a useful tang, and the potato cakes on which they perched fulfilled their role. The LC and the CMC shared and glee-fully devoured a platter of Charcutere produced at the ex-cellent Trealy Farm in nearby Monmouthshire. So far, so good. Main courses were less satisfying. The CMC had no complaints about his Sirloin Steak Sandwich (£10 – or £9.95 as it was disingenuously labelled) and first-rate, well-dressed mixed leaf salad, but when he asked for mayonnaise to perk it up a little, he was disappointed to find it unrich and free of taste despite it’s being, appar-ently, home-made. The LC had ordered a bowl of River Exe Mussels in cider and sage cream sauce, with hand cut chips. The chips, she said, were top-notch, but the sauce in which the mussels wallowed was far too sweet, and didn’t work at all. They’d have done much better, she felt, in a traditional mariniere sauce, made with dry white wine. Mr P ordered what was billed as Local Braised Venison with red wine and chestnuts – which turned out to be a very small serving of tasty, wine-infused casserole with a couple of chestnuts (a good combination), accom-panied by a space-filling flump of bland mashed potato and a handful of soggy, overcooked sprouting. (£8.75). After that a selection of ordinary-sounding pud-dings at £6 a go didn’t look inviting, especially as there was a good portion of Tiramisu from Ludlow’s Cichetti Bar waiting in the fridge at home. Mr P naturally applauds the heroism involved in rescuing an old pub from certain death and were he a resident of Kilpeck or adjacent settlement, he would hap-pily use the Kilpeck Inn and enjoy it (while still deploring its over-refurbishment and loss of character.) with The Fetch Theatre The Fetch Theatre is offering a training day in the art of puppetry on Saturday 7th March 2015. The workshop will be led by internationally renowned puppet master Andrew Purvin. Participants will learn how to operate and bring a puppets bursting into life. This day long workshop will include: • How to manipulate Bunraku style puppets. • How to instill life into ordinary imamate objects in order to tell intriguing stories. • How to create a striking visual narrative using shadow puppets. • Instruct on how to build and make puppets and discuss with individual

participants how to develop and use the art form within their own work. This workshop will be highly beneficial to creative professionals from all artistic and educational sectors. It will also be accessible and enlightening to anyone who wishes to get creative and learn new skills. The Training day will take place in Leominster Herefordshire and will cost £50 per person. There is something fundamental about walking in bare feet on bare earth. It ‘s quite a wild thing, a proper primeval thing – but in modern life you don’t walk around in bare feet, not if you want to be taken seriously you don’t. Unless you are a dog. It’s a bit like politicians holding hands - unusual in ‘average’ society. So I was quite pleased when, reading the news, I saw a photo of the Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, holding hands with President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels. I’d like to see more of that kind of thing. I’m genuinely interested in politics and the economy. But that doesn’t mean I get what the papers are on about. Today (9th Feb) for example, The Daily Telegraph is reporting on “Global economy at risk” whilst The Daily Mail thinks that “British economy on course to be world’s best performing economy” and on the very same day in The Independent, an economist deduces “we expect growth to slow as deeper Government spending cuts are implemented.” For someone who grew up in a rural backwater and lived on a farm for years, away from Westminster, Fleet Street and Canary Wharf, this can be confusing. It’s not just that different papers put an entirely different spin on the state of the economy. It’s also that the economy may turn out not to be the fundamental issue. In fact one day we may judge politicians on their policies for looking after soil. The point is, one day it may be all about soil. Which brings me neatly to the subject of allotments. In 1086 William the Conqueror completed his famous record of land and who owned it, and called it the Domesday Book. Meanwhile common land was set by for all the non-landowners to feed themselves. This went on in a back and forth manner and then, after the First World War, a duty was placed upon local authorities to provide land according to demand, enabling the allotment movement to spread across Britain. The effect of this news got to some places quickly and other places slowly. It got to Presteigne in November 2009. A small piece of land that had been meadow and bramble patch managed by the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust was passed to the Town Council for allotments. A small number of Presteigne folk who had been keen to get allotments for the town were delighted. Lin Scrannage told me “We thought about having pigs to root up the ground prior to us starting cultivation”. A bit too bold perhaps. In the end farmers on the council ploughed and harrowed the soil and then the zero-waste recycling team from Cwm Harry, delivered some fine trailer loads of rich compost to get things started. Lin continues, “It is a revelation to go down and have a look at the site - every allotment is different and reflects peoples’ different approach to cultivating and growing!! There are the traditionalists who dig and turn over the soil before winter and leave it bare, there are those who favour raised beds, those who like straight lines, those who mulch, those who compost, those who like to grow the same varieties every year and those who like to experiment.” Its good to know that allotments are still thriving in 2015 – and, to return to the original subject, that dogs paws still smell of the wild. They do. I checked.
