The Brighton Speed Trials 2007 . The MotorcyclesHere we go again, another years marker in the calendar and it does not in any shape or form get anyeasier to create yet another field of super machines to entertain not only those who actually take part butto create that sense of excitement that you the all important spectators up on Brighton's famous "Shelf"enjoy. Brighton is now almost certainly unique in that in times past seafront speed events were many in ayears calendar, Bexhill is claimed to be the birthplace of sea front sprints, true it is that Bexhill did run thefirst sprint but it never quite caught on. Brighton due to the foresight of Sir Harry Preston had a coursebuilt specifically for speed events which indeed caused quite a furore, but good sense prevailed and thatlegacy still continues.

So many other courses have now disappeared Blackpool, Great Yarmouth, Ramsgate etc, etc, so thatnow Brighton remains seemingly alone. This now virtually unique event still holds sway mainly by thewonderful efforts of the Brighton and Hove Motor Club backed up by the City Council, who despite all thepressures from those who do not realise the historic value of this parade of automotive living history, stillsupport the event.

There is naturally a limit to the numbers who can take part and this imposes the very unpleasant factor forthose who have to select the drivers and riders who fight to get a place in the programme of selectedparticipants. Many have to be unfortunately rejected, you can believe me when I say that hours havebeen spent in trimming the entry to the permitted level. We always try to include some fresh faces whichinevitably means that some firm favourites who have partiCipated year upon year have to be turned away.

History has to be part of the consideration an example perhaps being the inclusion some historicmachines from the past perhaps a good example is that of the big two of everything Norton JAP specialsbuilt many years ago by the man who was called "The Learned Professor Of Sprint Francis Williams, whohand built these specials in Swandean to attempt to take the course record for bikes. They certainly weretop performers in their day and on good days would take FTD in the bike sessions but the record alwaysjust eluded him. They were latterly campaigned by the late Ernie Woods and have been beautifullyrestored by their now owner Derek Fox and today "Thor" will be ridden Chris IIlman in the old stylish manner. The usual coterie of VMCC riders such as Frank Clarke on his Brooklands Special, Richard Morgan onhis late Fathers SODRudge, Roy Robertson flying the Big Twin Vinny clad in classic streamlining.

Over the past few meetings the sidecar merchants have been thin on the ground and for this year theentry list has grown, largely we believe in order to do battle with that ever developing engineering wonderof John Renwicks' the superb Vincent special, passengered as usual by that large lump in the chair ConKreet, all 134 Ibs of it, this class should provide some really good old fashioned sport. Of course the realcrowd pleaser is the fastest six battle, when the fight to get into this group causes the real "Fireworks" andthe work up to get into that top six run off is always a huge success for the winner of that battle.

We trust that the choices we have made will provide all with a super days sport and that whom we had torefuse will accept their undoubted disappointments.

Finally all our thanks to all those who work so hard to set the whole thing up, for the continued support ofour sponsors Messrs Frosts, to Brighton City's continued permissions and especially to you theSpectators, whose continued support all helps to ensure that Sir Harry's dream continues and his Drive ofEdwardian iron work will continue to provide a still living link back to the automotive history of this greatcountry of ours, thank you all.

VINTAGE AND HISTORIC

The Vintage and Historic Class has again produced an interesting and varied

entry to reflect the enthusiasm for the pre-war and classic racing period up to

December 1959. In recent years the class has been dominated by large

capacity cars that have often provided the overall winner.

rThis year the entry is dominated by supercharged cars. However, they will behard pressed to catch the very fast Lotus 15 of Stewart Couch who must be

the favourite to take the outright class win. Roger Saul with the Alfa Romeo

P3, Rob Cobden in his Riley, and Tony Armstrong with the supercharged 2

litre Aston Martin will all be in contention for the trophy.

As is a tradition in Brighton, as well as the outright class winner, we have a

race within a race. The VSCC Handicap. The eligible cars have handicaptimes set by the Vintage Sports Car Club who have detailed records of past

performance of all the entrants and who know the score very well,

Lucy Delaney carries on the family tradition with the Lea Francis and PeterColbourne-Baber brings the Stafford Special. Penny Hardy, Hardy Special

and Ian Cheyne, Lightweight Special, add lightness for speed. Bob Burrellwith V12 Bentley-Royce and Brian Maile, Alvis Speed 25, prefer large

capacity supercharged engines. Long time Brighton entrant David Furnell

brings his Brooklands Riley and Robert Day the elegant Bugatti T37 Grand

Prix. David Venables and Brian Smart both drive evocative Aston Martin's.

The fun of a handicap is that every driver is in with a sporting chance and asurprise win is always on the cards.
