Early Life

• Born in Oporto, Portugal, 1480

• Parents died at age 10• Was a page at the

Portuguese Court serving for the King and Queen at age 12

• 2 siblings, Isabel and Diago de Souse

• Father was mayor

Previous Experience

• As page, he studied cartography, geometry, and astronomy

• Became a soldier when he was 25 for India

Exploration

• Sailed around Cape of Good Hope for the King and Queen of Spain

• Got 5 ships September 20, 1519 and sailed the westward passage (sailed around the tip of Africa)

• Wanted to prove the earth was round, not flat

Results

• Found new ocean and named it Pacific because it travels east to west

• Found island in Philippines called Mactan

Conclusion• Died April 27, 1521• Shot by a poison arrow in

a fight by a native in Mactan just after landing there

• Remembered because he found the Straight of Magellan, (westward passage) he proved the earth was round, and he’s considered the leader for the first circumnavigation around the world
