What’s On Winter/Spring 2019

Happy New Year! And, welcome to ‘What’s On’. I hope that you enjoy this edition which is full of advertisements for lots of yoga events and seminars coming up this year, including our AGM on September 22nd. I look forward to meeting some of you there – and persuading you to send me your contributions for the summer edition. I am happy to include your thoughts, ideas, stories and jokes! Thank you to Rona Main, Clare Sergison and Simon Wallwork for their piece ‘Journeys from the Isles’. I was very lucky to receive a copy of ‘Yoga for Mental Health’ to review and highly recommend it for Yoga Therapists, Yoga Teachers and Yoga Practitioners. It puts Yoga practice squarely into a 21st century perspective. Well worth the read.

Yoga Humour

Hello Readers!

I had been looking for some Yoga humour to lighten up the content of this edition of What’s On. Then Rona kindly sent me the lovely picture below of some of the new committee meeting for the first time in Perth last Autumn. Carol our new Regional Officer, Rona, Gordon our Treasurer and myself, Aileen – What’s On editor. Then I read the caption behind Rona’s head.

“I’m wishing for more reasons to be merry”. Ha ha ha very

apt.

If you have any Yoga jokes or witticisms, I can include next time please email them to me at [email protected].

Regional Officer’s Report

Carol Price

Listen with Ease

“Have you ever sat very silently, not with your attention fixed on anything, not making an effort to concentrate, but with the mind very quiet, really still? Then

you hear everything… If you can listen in this way, listen with ease, without strain, you will find an

extraordinary change taking place within you, a change that comes without your volition, without your asking; and in that change

there is great beauty and depth of insight.”

January (Daily Meditations): J. Krishnamurti, The Book of Life.

We all go through periods of change and this New Year of 2019 is no

exception. Our committee has changed personnel, we are learning

on the job and we are listening to you, our members.

Our Annual General Meeting is moving to late September, Sunday

22nd to be exact, in the beautiful city of Perth. Venue tba. We are

trying to make attendance at these occasions more road/rail friendly.

We will provide refreshments and FREE yoga (with yours truly

leading the session), as well as a chance to meet your Regional

Committee members. Please pencil in the date in your diary.

Yoga Journey’s from the Isles

Clare Sergison in Shetland

Rona Main with contributions Simon Wallwork and Clare Sergison

Scotland is the perfect place for Yoga, blessed with open space & breathtaking scenery. The Northern & Western Isles have a unique beauty of their own, with the added wonder of wilderness, wild weather and a yogic sense of detachment from the western world. Island life has challenges, but two BWY Student Teachers, Simon Wallwork & Clare Serginson can dispel any myth that it’s difficult to train as a Yoga Teacher here as they reflect on their extraordinary positive journeys to join their BWY Teaching Diploma Courses on the mainland each month. Simon’s Journey Isle of Skye: Travelling Yogi I’m Simon and I live with my wife Kirsty and 2 sons Freddie & Toby on the Isle of Skye. Having integrated Yoga in to my life along with the running of my café the Skye Pie at the Glenview, I was really pleased when Sandra Cook accepted me on her BWY Teaching Diploma in Aberdeen. As an Aussie by birth, distance is entirely

Page 10: British Wheel of Yoga Scotland Regional Newsletter · January (Daily Meditations): J. Krishnamurti, The Book of Life. We all go through periods of change and this New Year of 2019

relative, and I was keen to integrate the journey from Skye to Aberdeen as a yogic experience in itself. My travels are however a little different to the average commute. My alarm sounds around 3 am. As I fill my food flask with porridge, I sip strong black coffee and select my morning’s music or audio book. I hit the road at 3.30 am and as a 6-hour journey unfolds, my wonderful weekend of learning begins. It’s time to notice myself, where I am on my journey in line with Patanjali’s great wisdom in the Niyamas svadyaya: self-study. As I travel the wilderness of Scotland, I also start an inward journey by stripping through layers to meet myself. My journey to become a Yoga Teacher accelerates with every Sanskrit CD or the Bhagavad Gita audio I’ve absorbed, or simply by contemplating discussions with my fellow Students. Transiting Scotland from coast to coast before dawn is a brilliant time for reflection. It’s also a wonderful time to notice my place in the world. Whilst driving in the remoteness, I immerse myself in the landscape, often quite literally! In the natural river pools near Achnasheen, I take a dawn dip – a wild swimming experience that’s both exhilarating and grounding. The chill in the clear water is awakening and the sight of the summer mist lifting over the water reveal companions - red deer grazing by the riverbank. Submerged, if only for a few moments - I feel my place. On my Sunday evening return, I find rest meditating by the sea at Dornie with the winter moonlight reflecting on the water. These meditations are a perfect time to absorb learning from my Diploma weekend. I’m filled with gratitude and contentment: santosha for this digestion time reflecting on the fascinating philosophical and anatomical subjects discussed. My journey changes with the seasons. I’ve driven through foot high snow drifts, full moons, new moons and 4 am mid-summer sun rises. I’ve seen beautiful wildlife: owls, hares and red deer by the dozen. I notice subtle changes in the landscape - budding trees or the sun

rising over a different part of the loch, or the retracting snow shifting from the deepest gullies of the mountains. My journey is an essential part of my path towards becoming a Yoga Teacher. Thank you Sandra Cook and the BWY. Also, to the beauty of Scotland - a pleasure to immerse within, deepening Yoga in my life and returning to my family and busy café in Skye again. http://glenviewskye.co.uk/earth-skye-yoga/ Clare’s Journey Shetland: A 1,200 mile round trip Having practiced yoga for 25 years and a move to Shetland 10 years ago, I was encouraged by friends at Shetland Yoga to train as a Yoga Teacher. I started my BWY Teaching Diploma with Carol Price and Paul Fox in October 2017 around 600 miles away in Manchester. With the added attraction of new semi-direct flights to Manchester, I was delighted to be accepted on the course. However, with Island travel, things don’t always go to plan. Before the course began all my shiny new flights were cancelled! Fast forwarding in my mind to 2 rounds of security plus the dizzying circling of perfume counters and not so fast food airports cafes – this was disappointing. However, remaining committed to the Diploma and my long-term Yoga journey, my regular commute now goes a bit like this:

• 5 am alarm on Friday morning

• 40-minute drive to Sumburgh Airport, Shetland

• 7.30 am flight to Edinburgh

• 2 pm flight to Manchester

• Train to Central Manchester

• Tram to Hotel…. phew!

• Return journey - repeat with car lifts from fellow Students and an overnight stay in Edinburgh on Sunday

• 2 pm return flight to Shetland on Monday - back in time for tea

What’s On – Spring/Summer 2018 12

• A grand round trip of 1,200 miles, 4 days & 4 modes of transport

Have I lost my mind?! Not really, because long journeys from Shetland are normal and everything becomes relative; and, as a North of England girl I’m used to travel. I also cultivate an attitude of acceptance and zen calm in the face of all possible outcomes - Yoga practice comes in handy here! I wouldn’t have it any other way. Training with the BWY on Carol & Paul’s course has been fantastic and supportive. It’s like ‘plugging into’ the current wave of Yoga in the wider world before retreating to the calmer shores of Shetland. I’m very thankful to the BWY & to Shetland Yoga who initially gave me confidence to study as a Yoga Teacher. My monthly commute is an extraordinary long round trip, but it’s worthwhile, rewarding and an integral part of my overall Yoga journey.

Yoga for Mental Health

Yoga for Mental Health Editors Heather Mason and Kelly Birch Forward B N Gangadhar and Timothy McCall Published by Handspring Publishing Paperback, £35 ISBN: 978-1-909141-35-3; also available as a Kindle ebook The editors Heather Mason and Kelly Birch have collated therapeutic and clinical viewpoints from 20 experts in the fields of research, mental health, yoga therapy and education to give us this comprehensive resource targeted at yoga therapists and mental health professionals. The therapeutic use of yoga is steadily increasing, particularly within the management of mental health. Yoga's potential as a key component of integrative and complementary mental health care is now being recognised internationally. This book serves as a guide for how and why our mind-body practice can be used as an aide in treatment. It acts as a bridge between yoga therapy and healthcare. For me as a yoga teacher and practitioner I found the content inspiring. The brilliantly concise introductory chapter takes the reader through the history of yoga reminding us of each the traditions and

Page 15: British Wheel of Yoga Scotland Regional Newsletter · January (Daily Meditations): J. Krishnamurti, The Book of Life. We all go through periods of change and this New Year of 2019

acknowledging that the central premise to them all is the control of the mind. The detailed analysis of the potential impact of yoga practices including asana, pranayama, mindfulness and more on our mental health was riveting. I already knew about the positive effects of yoga practices on the Autonomic Nervous System and have felt the benefit of them on my own mental health over the years. I think that the in-depth analysis of the physiological and psychophysiological impact on our body and minds should be required reading of every yoga teacher.

The subsequent chapters are organised as clinical overviews of mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, insomnia, trauma and more; followed by sections on current research and the rationale for incorporating yoga into the treatment of the condition.

The recommended yoga practices for each condition will be useful to not only Mental Health professionals and Yoga Therapists but Yoga Teachers and practitioners who want a deeper understanding of how to adapt their classes or practice to holistically benefit their students or themselves.

The editors are Heather Mason and Kelly Birch.

Heather Mason MA Msc RYT-500 is the founder of The Minded Institute and the Yoga in Health Care Alliance. She holds masters degrees in Buddhist studies, Psychotherapy and Medical Physiology. She has been teaching yoga since 2001 and has specialised in its therapeutic use for mental health since 2007. Yoga Teachers’ Mentoring Group: Glasgow Have you been teaching for some time and feel you would benefit from meeting others to share learning and practice? Or perhaps you have recently qualified and feel you would benefit from a supportive environment in which teaching issues can be discussed and questions can be asked with constructive feedback? Or, you may have qualified some time ago, but have not been teaching recently and would like to join a group of your peers to help you regain confidence to manage a class again? We are a friendly group of teachers who have been meeting three times a year since early 2017 to practise together and discuss various aspects of yoga, with a view to improving our own teaching, for the benefit of our class students and colleagues. Recent practices and discussions have been diverse: from ‘Laughter Yoga’, to Yin Yoga to exploring articles from reliable sources on ‘What are the qualities of a good yoga teacher.’ The group provides a useful opportunity for sharing and swapping resources such as books, DVDs and ‘props’ as well as providing contacts for teachers looking for class cover in their area. We’d love to hear from anyone, from any tradition or Yoga organisation, who would like to come along and find out more. Our next get-together is planned for Saturday, 9th February 2018, from 10.00 to 13.00 at the Couper Institute, Clarkston Road, Cathcart, Glasgow. There are regular bus and train services to Cathcart. If you would like to find out more, please contact Patricia or Joy on [email protected] or by phone on 07970 758902.

Introductory Course in the tradition of Krishnamacharya

and his son TKV Desikachar A 72 contact hour course held over 6 weekends for students or teachers

who wish to learn more about the tradition of the great yogi,

Professor T Krishnamacharya and his son, TKV Desikachar.

Saturday and Sunday 10.00 – 17.00

starting on 9 and 10 March 2019 and

finishing on 2 and 3 November 2019

In the Moment, 72 Berkley Street, Glasgow, G3 7DS

with Ann Hunter This unique approach integrates practical teachings about asana, pranayama, use of sound

and meditative techniques, with the teachings of Patanjali's Yoga sutras and other texts.

Above all, it emphasises the importance of adapting yoga to the individual. A large part of

the course will be about the art of developing a home practice tailored to your specific

needs and how to adapt this as circumstances change. Also, an ideal way to deepen your

knowledge of yoga prior to undertaking teacher training.

Comments from previous students on the course

“A starting point for a wonderfully fulfilling journey of self discovery and realisation. A

great starting point to develop knowledge of yoga philosophy and learn how to use Yoga

off the mat to bring more peace, love and joy into your life” Claire

“Taking part in Ann Hunter's Introductory course has been a great experience. Ann’s

knowledge, dedication to preparation and delivery of the course together with her

encouragement, support and guidance have led me to develop a regular yoga practise that

expands into every aspect of my life. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be

part of this and to have learned more than I could have ever imagined.” Moira

Closing date for applications 15 February 2019. Ann Hunter, 54 Underwood Road, Burnside, Glasgow, G73 3TF
